I recently made a 3-d hexagon appliqué quilt, using Geta Grama’s fantastic “My Secret Flower Garden” pattern. My husband, the lifelong Star Wars fan, constantly referred to it as a Death Star. It really annoyed me. Clearly, there are no hexagons on the Death Star, and the Death Star is not blue. I decided to … Continue reading That's No Moon…
Maryte tells about how she adds small fabric slivers to create interest and movement into her curved piecing project she calls Poppies quilt
Description: A free-pieced fan-style quilt, minus the curved piecing. Colors: Sunrise colors….reds, oranges, yellows, pinks and any variation along those lines or Moonlight colors….blues, purples, grays (sample photos to be posted soon) Size: 6 1/2" unfinished Notes: Use this tutorial as a basic guide-line for the color-ways, size and basic pattern design. Within those constraints though, please play. Add your own inspiration, variation or embellishments. Improvise! Charity blocks need to be pretty sturdy and functional, so whatever you create please ensure it is child friendly and washable. I found it much easier to use my basic sewing machine foot rather than my 1/4" foot with the diagonal seams of this block. The 1/4" foot kept distorting the bottom fabric. Tutorial Directions: 1. Cut or gather strips. I used 7 strips 2 1/2" x 9". Feel free to use wider or narrower strips, more or fewer, and as many different fabrics as you'd like. 2. Lay two strips together with right-sides facing. The top strip should lay along a diagonal of the bottom strip. Sew a 1/4" seam following the edge of the top strip. Repeat on the other side of the bottom strip, with the diagonal going the other direction. (The outer strips should form a slight V-shape when the pieces are opened up.) 3. Trim off the extra bottom fabric. 4. Press the growing "fan" open then add additional strips to the outer edge of the block in the same manner. 5. Square up the top edges of your block to a 6 1/2" block. (As you will add a HST to the bottom corner of the fan, you may of course leave that edge short.) 6. Using your favorite HST method, add a HST to the inside corner of the block. I chose to just cut a 45-degree line across the block where I wanted the inside corner to be and then sewed on a wide strip of fabric to be trimmed down and squared up. 7. Press, square up and you're done! These should be fun to play with and try out different layouts. Can't wait to see what you come up with when we're together in June.
This nicely complex block is a WHOLE lot easier to make than it looks. ( Edited to add: See the finished quilt here !) It's July, an...

Since September is "my month," today is the day that 11 of my fellow One Block Over block-makers receive a parcel from me. They're getting fabric and instructions for making a strip-scrappy block adapted from here. Here's the tutorial for making these blocks. I'm happy to share it with you too! Paisley Panache, High Society Collection by Anthology The only thing you won't get in this tutorial is the fat quarter of fabric I mailed with their instructions! They'll use this Paisley Panache print to choose color-coordinating scrappy strips. I recommend choosing: a favorite multi-colored print strips to coordinate with it background fabric When you're finished making the blocks, you can decide how to use the multi-colored print as: additional blocks, sashing or borders. To make three blocks approximately 8" X 12-1/2" (unfinished), cut: 3 - 8" X 14-1/2" rectangles for background 3 - 1-1/2" to 3" wide strips, at least 16" long Align a ruler along the length of one background piece, allowing at least 1" of fabric on each edge. Cut. Sew to insert your selected stash strip between the two background pieces. Press seam allowances toward the print strip. Trim to remove strip ends. In random widths from 1½” to 3”, cut straight across the width of the fabric to make 5 to 6 short strips. Repeat the previous steps with your two remaining background rectangles and two different print strips. For greater interest, change the angle of the first rotary cut of each background piece. In a pleasing side-by-side arrangement, mix the short strips to make three blocks. Note that I've aligned the strips along the bottom edge. When laid side-by-side, and before sewing, my blocks ranged from 14" to 16" across. Variety is good! Two rectangles have six strips; one rectangle has seven. Sew along the short sides to join the strips. Press seams open as shown. back view front view Trim only to straighten the uneven strips. Don't do any squaring-up... yet. To be completely honest, I haven't made any more than these three blocks. But I do know I'll make more sets. It will be fun to see the variety of scrappy prints in the blocks I receive from my One Block Over buddies. At that point, I'll decide how I'm going to put them all together. I've got several ideas in mind and I'll be sure to let you know. Linda
This past week, I’ve been having fun working on a new paper-pieced star pattern. As of right now I’m calling it Kaleidoscope, but I am trying to think of a more unique name (any ideas??…
Half Rectangle Triangle With A Twist Block I've been having lots of fun making this block using my hand dyed scraps. There are HRT's and a couple of partial seams involved, but don't let that scare you away! It's super easy! The block will be 8 1/2" square unfinished and 8" square finished. HRT WITH A TWIST 8" x 8" FINISHED BLOCK You will need 4 HRT's and one 2 1/2" square for each block. Another method of making HRT's is by Latifah Saafir for The Modern Guild. I began by cutting half triangles. I lined up the center line on the edge and the bottom of the template on the bottom of the fabric, and cut. Because I want my rectangle orientation to be the same, this method will ensure that I get exactly what I need. Pair two pieces together being mindful that the orientation of each set is the same. I like to pin mine before I sew just to make sure! Stitch using 1/4" seam. Press seams. I usually press my seams toward the outside (in this case the grey fabric). Trimming the blocks. I line up the 30 degree line from my ruler with the seam and trim the long edges. Trim your HRT's to 5 1/2" x 3 1/2" Perfectly rectangle! On one side of the 2 1/2" square you will want to mark 1/4" from both edges. This will be your partial seam guide. You really only need one dot marked, but I find it easier to have two dots ensuring that I place the square correctly. Line up both edges with your square and HRT, right sides together and pin. Start by placing your needle in the down position right on the little dot where my finger is pointing to. Back stitch and continue sewing to the edge. Press. This is what you get. A 1/4" that is not sewn down. Place another HRT on the left edge, sew from top to bottom, press. Repeat with the third HRT and press. This what we have so far. Now the tricky part, which isn't all that tricky! Maybe the way I explain it will be!! Pin the final HRT. Here is a great tutorial for partial seams by Faith at Fresh Lemons. The pin is placed through the dot on the square. This makes it easy to know where to stop. Start at the edge and sew towards the center. Backstitch when you get to the dot. Press. It will look like this, meeting up at the dot. The final seam!! Flip your final rectangle so the edges meet (right sides together). Sew along the edge, press and viola! you are finished. I've made a few different sizes with my hand dyed scraps. Soon they will become something! See the small block on the bottom? The HRT orientation is going the 'other' way. Looking for different sizes? 16" Square: 4 ~ 10 1/2" HRT's, 1 ~ 4 1/2" Square 12" Square: 4 ~ 8" x 5" HRT's, 1 ~ 3 1/2" Square 7" Square: 4 ~ 5" x 3" HRT's, 1 ~ 2 1/2" Square 5 1/4" Sq: 4 ~ 4" x 2 1/4" HRT's, 1 ~ 2 1/4" Square There are always options... Thank you for stopping by! If by chance you try this block, let me know how it turned out. I finally finished another quilt. I have to say that even though it took forever, I love this quilt! This quilt was made out of a Moda Bliss charm pack. (I love charm packs, less cutting for me.) I tried embroidering for the first time and it came out alright, next time I'll use a hoop. Well I'm in a mood to get rid of some of my stash and I already have 2 more quilts in mind. Stay tuned!
