I'm a knitter, have been since I was quite a little dot. I really enjoy it, and have tried this year to increase my skills by taking on projects that challenge me a bit. I also started crocheting this year, but it still feels like a foreign language to me. The lure of the granny sqaure will keep reeling me in though. In my ideal world I would also be an expert seamstress, I have a pristine still new and in it's box (in the attic) sewing machine. Perhaps I could follow Miss. Haslam's system of dress cutting? How amazing for her to set up her own company and work out a sewing and pattern cutting system, in what I suspect was her home town of Bolton. Honeing her skills and building on her reputation, to create a successful business. None of the books are dated, but the first one looks quite basic and functional and the images inside look like they may be wartime clothing. I'm loving this glamourous overall, chanelling Lana Turner. In the second book the styles reflecting the post war Christian Dior 'New Look'. Book three looking the most sophisticated, with full colour images. I would so love to make some of these patterns up. Perhaps a project for the future ? November 2014 Update. A big "thank you" to those of you who replied to my previous post! And if you didn't but would like to weigh in after all, please do. I read all comments, also those on older posts. I am glad I asked because your answers actually surprised me. Both on the Pinterest board of the Vintage Sewing Pattern Pledge and on We Sew Retro, I see so many dresses compared to anything else, I assumed you would all refer those. Instead, the votes were clearly in favour of separates and hats. I promise I'll look for a hat pattern in the coming two months (probably a 1930's one...) but today, I have a blouse from the 1950's. It is another one of Bella magazine's "draft-as-instructed" projects and this one is actually in my size so I may just try and make myself one next week. Whether or not I do that, I will give you an additional little tutorial about making other collars than this really high and tight one (I'm usually not such a big fan of those myself...) The blouse comes from Bella magazine nr. 16, August II, 1952 and is for ladies with a bust circumference of 88 cm. The editors of the magazine had this to say about it: Blouse and skirt are especially popular this year and now that the summer is getting towards its end and lots of suits will be worn again, it seemed right to Bella to dedicate the instructed pattern to this. The designs depicted here all have cut-on sleeves and a standing collar with rounded fold-back corners. Three of them have yokes which allows for interesting design variations. You can see a nice example with stripes used in different directions and it is easy to imagine other variations on this theme. Something similar can be done in a fabric with a check. To make the yoke, its pattern piece should be separated from the front of the blouse. Depending on the thickness of the fabric you can make the yoke in a double layer or make a 4 cm wide front facing in which you make the buttonholes (either way, I would recommend using a lightweight interfacing at that front edge where you will add buttons and buttonholes). The front of the blouse is stitched onto the yoke. Close side-, sleeve- and shoulder seams and add the cuff of a double layer of fabric to the sleeve edge (this double layer remark makes it sound more complicated than it is. It's a normal cuff which means each one consists of two pieces of fabric). Sew on the interfaced collar, sewing the neckline edge between its layers. For a more dressy look, you can stitch a pleated strip of fabric in the yoke seam. In this case, the pleated fabric was first basted along the folded-over edge of the yoke which was then stitched onto the front of the blouse. This allows the pleats to fall out. You can also let the pleats fall in by following the order of construction mentioned before. It will look no less lovely (I'm not so sure about that...). The blouse is also nice in two different fabrics, don't you think? Here you can also see how it can be worn over the skirt with the addition of a knitted waistband. In practice, this will work especially well if you use a wool fabric. Of course, in this case, it is required that you find a perfectly colour match between fabric and yarn. To make this blouse, you should use the waistline in the drawing as the bottom of the pattern. For the waistband, cast on 170 stitches and knit 2, purl 2 for a chest circumference of 88 cm (they do not mention a needle size or anything. Most 1950's knitting was done on thin needles though. 2.5 is very common). Knit to a height of 10 cm. Stretch the waistband while sewing it on. Then, the blouse can also be made in its simplest form, without a yoke. In that case, you have to make a front overlap of 2 cm along the entire front edge and add a 4 cm cut-on facing that. A big or small bow looks nice under a standing collar like this. And if you do not plan on removing the jacket of your suit, you might as well make a dickey instead of a blouse. It would save you on sewing and on fabric and you could even make the back from a cheaper material. The dotted lines form the sides of the dickey. The front and back are connected at the waistline by two pieces of elastic of 15 cm long. As usual, we didn't mention all the possible variations. So, if you do not quite like any of the options shown here, you can use your imagination to create your own version. Surely, that will give you even more satisfaction! In this case, it is pretty obvious what each pattern piece is (although just to be sure: the collar is on the left, the cuff on the right). When drafting the pattern, make the rectangles first and then put in the measurements mentioned along the sides, draw the lines inwards to make the points for the pattern. All measurements are in centimeters and there is no seam allowance included. Oh, and although the blouse looks quite sleek in the drawings, that is just because it is worn tucked into high waistbands. It has no darts so it is basically a fairly loose-fitting design.

Again, no info on this doll, or where or when she appeared. But she was drawn by Maurieta Wellman, and she's lovely. Also, Blog Reader and Paper Doll Fan Jackie, has provided the following info on last week's puzzlement (the instructions to glue cloth to the back of the paper doll): I can tell you why the magazine paper dolls often told you to glue them to cloth. They were sometimes printed on pretty thin paper. Gluing on a cloth backing before cutting out caused these paper toys to last longer. Later, cardboard was often suggested for the same purpose. Whenever the doll and the clothes are printed on the same paper you have the problem of keeping the doll stiff enough but keeping the tabs bendable. If the doll isn't stiff enough she slumps. If the tabs are too stiff they break off. So a cloth backing was a good solution at the time your doll was printed. Thanks Jackie! That makes perfect sense.

The most popular Out of This World blog post for a long time time was actually about paper dolls in comics. I made a one-off post about this topic as a 'thank you' to a fellow blogger who was very kind enough to allow me to use her scan of a newspaper comic strip for a project I was working on. Since then, paper doll fans have been among my most frequent visitors. So I thought it was about time I followed up on that success with some more paper dolls. In today's post I'm using other people's scans that have been passed on to me, and they are all from various Katy Keene issues from the original series and annuals. In the next post I'll be featuring some Millie the Model and Patsy Walker paper dolls from my own collection. Katy Keene was published by Archie Comics. Katy Keene is something of a phenomenon. Bill Woggon has that 'good girl' look just right, with Katy sort of somewhere between Fritzi Ritz and Torchy. So here's a selection of material from some classic Katy Keene comics - wedding dresses, some covers, a cool beatnik story, and of course, lots of paper dolls! Enjoy! Good Morning! For those of you who are sick and tired of vintage fashions, you are in luck as I have only one more week's worth of Modes Royale patterns to show you! As I said last week, I do hope that it has been interesting and that you have been able to glean a bit of inspiration from the pictures. Today I am sharing the Fall/Winter 1951/52 catalogue. I have found this one especially interesting. Take a look at the lower right hand corner of the cover. There were free patterns in this catalogue for a sweater and hip pads!!!!! I have not published the typed pages as they looked too pixelated, but my curiosity has gotten the best of me so I am going to have to go back and look for the hip pad pattern, not that ANY of us would want to make them, but I think it would be interesting nonetheless. Enjoy the next to last edition of our Modes Royale parade! Lovely sleeve treatment on the above left outfit. You'll probably see this again!! I have a dress that is similar to the dress on the right. This is a beautiful neckline. The above dress would make a lovely wedding gown. I think the coat on the right is spectacular, but I also love the pocket line on the left coat. A professor would fall off their if a student arrived to class wearing anything remotely similar to any of the above outfits!!! My, how we have changed. Wishing you all a lovely and inspiring week! Revue populaire par excellence, "Le Petit Echo de la Mode" réussi le tour de force de continuer à paraitre pendant les années de guerre, quand d'autres revues plus prestigieuses n'y sont pas parvenues. En 1944, tout est rationné, et le papier et l'encre utilisés pour l'impression la revue n'est pas de très bonne qualité. De ce fait, les numéros qui sont parvenus jusqu'à nous sont souvent très abimés, d'autant plus qu'ils ont été pour la plupart conservés dans des greniers. Mes exemplaires, dont ceux présentés ci dessous, couvrant la période début 1944 - fin 1946 n'échappent pas à la règle, d'ou la mauvaise qualité des scans que je vous présente ici. Toutefois, je pense que ces anciens numéros sont dignes d'un très grand intérêt. D'une part, ce sont de superbes témoignages d'une époque douloureuse où les femmes firent preuve d'une grande ingéniosité ,malgré toutes les difficultés, pour garder la tête haute. Elles surent utiliser tout ce qui leur tombait sous la main pour inventer une mode passionnante et unique. Je pense notamment à leur immenses turbans, et leur chaussures à semelle de liège, restés célèbres ,. Le Petit Echo de la Mode sut accompagner , par ses conseils, toute cette créativité féminine. D'autre part, chaque numéro est agrémenté d'une superbes gravures de mode sur sa première page. De beaux dessins colorés et rendant compte subtilement de l'air du temps. Il est intéressant également de constater le changement rapide, entre début 1944 et fin 1946 du le style vestimentaire aussi bien que du style graphique . A l'intérieur de la revue très peu de dessins, et assez petits, d'une facture amusante et jolie, mais trop rares, et parfois mal imprimés. Pour moi, plus encore que les numéros de la revue Modes et Travaux, (qui parut elle aussi pendant la guerre , plus riche en croquis de mode, mais plus élitiste) Le Petit Echo de la Mode, s'adressaient aux classes populaires et de ce fait à vraiment accompagné les femmes pendant la période de guerre, et toutes les années qui suivirent. Il reste un précieux document pour les études portant sur l'histoire de la mode. Le Petit Echo de la Mode du 13 février 1944 illustration de mode colorée "De Jolis Riens avec Rien" "Charmant petits coupons de tissus, de fourrure, de ruban, petits pelotons de laine, deviendront des trésors si vous savez les employer. Le chemisier montrer utilisation de trois petits coupons de soie ou de lainage. Un boléro élégant sera fait avec très peu de tissus si vous y ajoutez des bandes de velours ou de soie taillés en biais. Un sac sera confectionné avec deux tissus, ou bien en tissu et cuir en utilisant un sac démodé. Un turban trs nouveau emploiera de bandes de velours et de soie de deux ou trois ton, drapées autours d'une simple calotte de feutre à fond carré".
