By repeatedly stitching threads into dense structures I create intricate and complex openwork compositions that mimic natural forms and structures.

Well ladies, I am about to show you a fix for one of the most annoying fitting problems ever. You ready? Pants that feel like they're crotching you to death. You know what I'm talking about. You make a new pair of pants, excitedly try them on, and find that they pull in the front, or you can't sit in them. Grrr!! It's the one thing that can really keep you from getting any fashion mileage out of your newly-sewn creation. I can tell you that there are two possible reasons for this. One: The front crotch area is improperly shaped for the body of the wearer. The rise needs to be reshaped. Two: The pants are shorter waisted than the person wearing them. The rise needs to be lowered. Let's start with the reshaping. I have a favorite pattern I use when I want to make some comfy pants or PJ's. Everything about it is perfect. Except for the part where they pull in the crotch. Not comfy at all. Here's how to fix that. Lay the pants out so that you can get at the center front seam. You will be changing the curve, or Reshaping The Rise. Measure 1 1/4" up from the leg inseam. Mark 1/4" out from the crotch seam at this point. Now draw a new curve down to the inseam, and up along the center front seam. You are making the curve deeper. Sew along the line you made, and trim off the excess fabric. Finish the new edge with your serger or a zigzag stitch. Try your pants on. Do they feel better? If so, your work is done. If they need to be adjusted a bit more, here is the next part. Lowering The Rise Measure 1/4" - 3/8" down from the crotch seam and mark. Draw a new curve, but this time carry it up along the back seam as well as the front. You can make your curve bigger than mine is if you want. I usually take it a bit at a time so that I don't do anything drastic. Not that I've done (much of) that sort of thing when I'm sewing. Stitch along your line, trim, and finish your edge. You should now be able to sit down comfortably in your pants. I marked the original curve on the pants so that you can see the difference. You have cut the rise lower, making room in your garment for movement and comfort. This alteration comes in really handy for pants, shorts, coveralls, jumpsuits, and rompers. I've used it many times. Thank you to Bryden S. for sharing this method with me. I hope everyone finds it as useful and timesaving as I do! I use a stand-alone Babylock Coverstitch machine. You should be able to follow along with different brands, but some of the steps may be different (releasing tension, for example). Belinda has put together an excellent tutorial for ending the coverstitch on the Brother 2340CV, here. Let's begin: 1. Stop stitching with the needles in the highest position, or turn the handwheel to raise them if needed. Next, raise the presser foot and release needle tension. (On the Babylock, raising the presser foot releases tension at the same time.) 2. With a long, skinny tool (I use the needle allen wrench which came with my machine), sweep under the presser foot and behind the needles, "hooking" the needle threads. 3. Continue sweeping forward until the needle threads are pulled out in front of the presser foot. 4. Continue pulling the needle threads until you have a thread loop about 4" long. 5. Snip the thread loop in the center so both needle threads are cut at the same time. (I usually snip while the skinny tool is still pulling the threads out, but I couldn't balance the tool, the scissors and the camera all at the same time.) 6. After the needle threads are cut, pull the fabric straight back. 7. Continue pulling straight back until the needle threads are pulled to the underside (this will happen as you pull the fabric back), and stop when you have about 5-6 inches of needle thread. (In this photo, you see the needle threads that were cut from the needles laying on top of the fabric. The needle threads in the stitches have just disappeared to the underside by my pulling the fabric.) 8. Turn the fabric over and there are your needle threads on the underside! 9. Cut the looper thread, leaving a 4-5 inch tail at the machine for your next project. 10. Needle and looper thread tails ready for next project. 11. Underside. These stitches will not pull out. Try it! You can finish the tails by threading them under the looper stitches with a wide-eyed blunt needle, tying a knot, or applying Fray Block. (If you are hemming or stitching in the round, you will need to manually pull the needles threads at the beginning of your stitching to the back before you get to the end so you don't stitch over exposed thread tails. I usually stop hemming right before I get to the end to do that, and then I continue the last few inches, stitch over the existing stitches for 2-3 stitches and then use the method above to pull the ending needle threads to the back.)

Scroll to the end of this post for the recipe I use :) I've mentioned before that I found a wonderful bread machine at my local thrift store for 5 dollars. It was dusty and "schmutzy" but it cleaned up beautifully and works like a charm. I actually bake bread twice a week and we dont' buy sandwich bread at all any more. When I originally bought the machine, I added the ingredients and let the bread maker do it's magic. What is no so magical is the weird shaped "block" of bread you get with that obnoxious hole in the bottom. For those of you who know my wonderful hubby, you won't be surprised to hear that he was not a fan of the large square loafs of bread. I had to cut down 2 sides of every slice to make them more of a "normal" size piece of bread and the pieces at the end of the loaf with the hole from the paddle were also not that exciting. So I searched for online info on how to make the switch to oven baking. I found a great article and I've never looked back! Now my loafs are the right shape to make my hubby happy and there is no paddle hole :) I even read an article about a woman who made bread to give as gifts one year and accidentally gave away a loaf that still had the paddle inside it! Now I use my bread maker for dough kneading and bake my loafs in my oven. Any loaf style bread can be made this way. Oven baked bread is much different that bread machine breads. The taste will be the same, but the texture and crust will be very different. My beautiful and trusty bread maker! It's not hard to do at all (or you know I wouldn't be doing it) First, make your dough in the machine on the dough cycle. While the dough is "working" in the machine, spray your bread pan with olive oil. ( I use a 10" by 5" bread pan for a 1 1/2 pound loaf) I found this great ceramic bread pan at the thrift store as well. I use well floured parchment paper as my work surface to keep the dough from sticking and it makes clean up so much easier :) After your machine beeps that the dough is ready, drop it out onto your floured parchment paper. Punch the dough down, dusting with flour if needed to keep the dough from sticking to your hands. It's important to get all the air out of the dough or you could end up with large ugly air pockets in your loaf....and nobody wants that :) Once the dough is deflated, shape it into a flat rectangle. Roll the dough up jelly roll style. You'll want it to be as long as your bread pan. Place the dough with the seam down into your prepared pan. Cut a slit down the center of the loaf with a sharp knife about 1/2" deep, leaving about 1" uncut on each end. Lightly spray the top of the loaf as well as the inside of the cling wrap with olive oil to prevent sticking when it rises. Loosely cover the loaf with cling wrap. (If you don't want to use cling wrap here, you can use a damp - but not wet - kitchen towel instead) Place inside warm oven for 1 to 1 1/2 hours, close the door. I set my timer to 1 hour and check on it. Depending on the weather and the humidity sometimes it only takes an hour to rise, sometimes it takes 1 1/2 hours. Once the bread has risen, take it out of the oven and carefully remove the cling wrap. Set oven temp to 350 degrees. When the oven reaches 350 degrees, bake the loaf for 30 minutes. Remove your oh so yummy smelling bread from the oven and allow to sit for 10 minutes. (Try to control yourself and not pull off a huge chunk and slather with butter.......) Remove from the pan and place on a rack to cool completely. You don't want soggy bread. You should wait at least 30 minutes before you cut into your loaf. I cover mine with a clean kitchen towel and allow it to cool completely. I've left it this way overnight and it doesn't dry out. Always allow your bread to cool completely. Putting it away warm will cause it to sweat and get moldy. In the beginning I used one of those slicing guides to make sure my slices were even, but I've been doing this for a while now and I don't use it anymore, but they are helpful. And I have 2 of these and don't know what I'd do without them! They keep your bread fresh and wonderful. I've never had a moldy or dry bread using these guys. You can find them at Walmart.com for about 13.00. This may seem like a lot of work, but it seriously only takes a few minutes and it's sooooo worth it! And if you are giving bread away as a gift, it looks so much prettier this way too!
