14:00 - 17:00 BST (British Summer Time, London, UK)Online event, hosted on Zoom by Kate Sekules of @visiblemendKate Sekules is a cultural historian and mending researcher, artist, and educator based in New York. Frequently called “the queen of visible mending” she teaches the skills and joys of personalising, enhancing and stylishly extending the life of your clothes, while also seeking to establish mending as a discrete academic discipline. As scholar, she has presented research at over two dozen symposia (Textile Society of America, British Museum, Comité International d’Histoire de l’Art, Association of Dress Historians, etc), and is completing her doctoral dissertation A History and Theory of Mending (Bard Graduate Center). As a practitioner, her work has been exhibited widely (RISD Museum, Winterthur, Cornell Biennial) and featured in media from the New York Times to Le Monde and NHK News, Japan. She is an assistant professor of fashion history at Pratt Institute, and “Mending Fashion” at Parsons School of Design, hosts #MendMarch on Instagram, and is the author of MEND! A Refashioning Manual and Manifesto (Penguin, 2020). Outline of the workshopThis workshop explores two techniques for creative mending, one classic, one innovative, and both fun ways to customise your clothes in your own unique style. First, after a sprint through the millennia-long hidden history of mending, we will darn: the method of weaving with a needle mostly used to fix holes in knitwear, but adaptable for most materials. We will play with placement, style, and colour, troubleshoot, and review two further darning methods. In part two, Kate will introduce punk smocking, her own versatile method of extemporary stitching that covers stains and damage while reshaping and enhancing a shirt or tee. Individual advice and methodologies will be explored. Together we will discover the joys of menditation, countering industrial apparel with self-made couture, and evolving personal wardrobe practices. This course will equip you with tools and mendspiration for a lifelong design journey. Mend, but make it fashion! Level of experience required: suitable for beginner to advanced A material pack will be sent to participants before the workshop containing: Two vintage (deadstock) darning needles, one ballpoint Two skeins of medium-weight wool yarn, in contrasting (surprise!) colours Two vintage (deadstock) extra-long needles, made in Redditch, England Two skeins of mercerised cotton crochet thread, one black, one white “Little Book of Mends: Audacious Fixes for Holey Clothes” booklet In addition to the materials pack provided, you will need to provide the following materials and equipment: Your own garments to mend and customise Scissors or snips A piece of paper Please note: material packs are shipped on an insured, trackable delivery service. Any customs duties, delays, lost or undeliverable packages are the responsibility of the customer. Once a material pack leaves the workshop tutors' hands with a tracking number, the seller has no further obligation to the buyer. Workshop recording: The workshop will be recorded and the recording will be shared with you after the workshop. Please allow 7 working days for us to send you the recording. The blog began eleven years ago, April 20, 2008. I started it on Blogger before I had any thoughts of ever teaching tapestry much less making weaving my whole career. I moved the blog to my website years later and though it could use a good going over with an eye to fixing links and making a bette

Any wear and tear in a shirt is usually noticed first on the collar and cuffs, even while the rest of the garment is still intact. Thankfully, this does not mean you need to discard the entire shirt because it is quite easy to do something about it. In the past, it was obvious how to fix worn collars. When you had your shirts sewn, or sewn yourself, an extra piece of fabric was usually saved for future repairs. It is a bit trickier, of course, to repair shirts today, because we buy them ready-made in stores without spare material, but by choosing a different fabric you can take the opportunity to give the shirt a new look. If you do not have another already discarded shirt to use material from, it may be an idea to look for a flea market find. If you do not want to change the look of your favourite shirt more than is necessary, you can often cut a piece of fabric from the bottom edge of the back of the shirt and use it to repair the collar. This of course assumes that the shirt is long enough to start with. If the shirt fabric is patterned, checkered or a solid colour it is possible to make a close to invisible repair of collar or cuff. If, on the other hand, the shirt is striped, the stripes may end up in the wrong direction, but it will usually still be just fine. For the most part, even the collar stand (the narrow edge that the collar is usually firmly sewn into and folded over) needs to be covered. If only the top of the collar is worn, you can turn it instead. The worn side then ends up on the underside of the folded collar and can also be both strengthened and concealed under a lining. When choosing this method, it is good to see if the underside of the collar has seams for loose collar stays, the arrowshaped plastic pieces that are sometimes used to hold the points of the collars. Such stitches are difficult to unpick, and in this case they will now adorn the top of the collar. Of course, it is also good to simply cut away the worn collar and give the shirt grandfather collar (see the shirt in the middle of the image on the left.) SIZING/FIT The Mister Freedom® Manureva Deck Shorts comes raw/unwashed, and will shrink to tagged size. Follow the usual recommended initial method before wearing: cold soak for 30mn, spin dry and line dry. Please refer to sizing chart to determine which size works for you. CL's Advice: They are pretty much true-to-size, and I opted for a waist 32 and relaxed fit, judging the waist 30 a bit too ‘Angus Young’ on me. These shorts have a generous waist and slimmer thigh section. CARE Hand wash or machine wash on delicate, cold water, minimal eco-friendly detergent. Turn inside-out to avoid marbling of the fabric. Line dry only. This fabric will develop attractive patina overtime, according to the owner’s activities, frequency of wear and laundering choices. STORY Our Manureva Deck Shorts — Pant pattern inspired by 1970s “Bush Pants”, with canvas fabric colorways referencing visuals of vintage 1970s Hobie Cat® sails — averaged a stock 11’’ inseam. I had gone on a custom cropping binge a few years back, and shortened all my all my Manureva Deck Shorts, anticipating an escape to Bora Bora with Tina in 2016, an epic trip and one of my happy places. If you lean more towards a 1953 Gary Cooper in Acapulco vibe than a 1973 Angus Young schoolboy get up, our COOPER treatment may be the ticket on these summer shorts! Manureva Deck Shorts, now available shortened about one inch below the front patch pockets, a tad longer than my Bora Bora days chop job. Now, get out in the sun and show some skin if that’s your thing, look alive, and get your vitamin D while you’re at it! This MF® garment is designed in California by Mister Freedom® and manufactured in Japan by Sugar Cane Co.

Limited Edition: Our denim comes in distinct categories (Stretch, Selvedge and Small Batch), for the same reason that sometimes you want an artisanal sipping whiskey, and others a draft beer. The Made in USA Selvedge is our most premium jean, what we call Small Batch Denim. Created in partnership with denim guru Eric Goldstein, whose credits include Jean Shop and RRL, it’s woven at Vidalia Mills in Vidalia, Louisiana. Vidalia is quickly becoming famous among aficionados for its “farm-to-yarn” denim as the cotton is locally grown, then woven on Vidalia's Draper looms, many of which were acquired from the late mythic White Oak Plant in Greensboro, North Carolina. It takes about two hours for each of these machines to weave enough fabric for one pair of jeans. The denim is cut and sewn in Los Angeles. Design details include a single chest pocket, two hand pockets whose design is inspired by workwear from the 1940s, side tab adjusters at the back waist. There’s also trapunto stitching on the underside of the neck, which keeps it from wearing out over time and is a technique more commonly found on outerwear or quilts. The Rigid denim is a dark, rugged fabric originally created for hard labor. It will be a little stiff when you first wear it, but it will mold to your body and loosen up overtime. Or as Goldstein says, “You’ve got to earn that fit.” 100% American cotton Woven at the Vidalia Mill in Louisiana 13.25 oz On a vintage shuttle looms reclaimed from the famed White Oak Plant Cut and Sewn in Los Angeles Trapunto stitching at the neck Mercerized yarn to minimize shrinkage, recommend buying true size and breaking in over time Machine Wash Cold (if you must wash it); Hang To Dry Only Style Number OU2289255

Our new Boavista jeans are made from raw indigo 11.5oz selvedge denim (100% organic cotton) from Portugal. The five pocket western style is a classic straight fit. We’ve finished the style with smooth antique brass rivets, a branded pull up leather back patch and included the characteristic selvedge stripe on the coin pocket. Typically a yard wide (approx. 91cm), selvedge denim is made on traditional old shuttle looms, which takes time, but produces a tighter woven, harder wearing fabric with a sealed edge, usually with a distinctive red and white stripe. The fabric will mould to your shape and gradually develop individual, unique character over the years. The selvedge runs straight down the outer seam of the leg creating the characteristic shape and a clean ready sealed seam.
