Sangría Whilst the romería once again cannot take place this year, we can get the flavour of the event. There are many ways to prepare Sangria, but today we give you the near mythical recipe for the sangria distributed at the Romería de San Roque in Garachico, which usually takes place each year on 16 August. Sangria takes its name from the reddish color obtained from its main ingredient, red wine. (Sangre = blood. Sangria means bloodletting in Spanish). Tips for making the perfect sangria First of all, use a decent wine, neither a gran reserva nor a tetra-brick. Always use hard fruit, such as peach, apple, pear, etc. Never use canned peach or pineapple. The maceration time of the sangria must be at least 2 hours. That will give the fruit time to transmit flavours to the wine. Sweeten to taste, but remember that the fruit itself or if orange or lemon soda is added, it will already add sweetness. You can add cognac or any other alcohol. Your call. Put the ice in the glass, at the moment of serving. If you make a bowl of sangria as is normally done, do not add ice to the bowl, because if the ice melts, the sangria will be watery and diluted. Ingredients: 1 litre of red wine 1 peach 1 apple 1 pear Half a melon 1 cinnamon stick Orange peel Lemon peel Sugar to taste Half a litre of lemon, orange or plain soda Note: Increase by half a litre of and half a fruit for every two people. Method: Place all the peeled and cut up fruits in a large bowl, add the wine, soda, sugar (to taste), citrus peels and the cinnamon. Marinate for two hours and serve cold. Tarta de Santiago 25 July is Día del Apóstol Santiago (St. James' Day) - the Patron Saint of Spain and of the City of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Tarta de Santiago (St. James Cake), is a delicious gluten and dairy free Spanish Almond Cake. Ingredients: 250 grams of ground almonds 250 grams of white sugar 5 medium eggs 1 tablespoon of cinnamon The zest of half a lemon Icing sugar Method: Weigh the ingredients and put the almond, sugar, lemon zest, and cinnamon in a bowl. Mix well. Add the 5 eggs. Mix very well until everything is integrated. Pour the dough into greased a mold or flan tin (approx 26 cm in diameter) and put it in the oven at 180 degrees for about 50 minutes, until evenly browned. Once cooked, decorate with the Cross of St. James. Download a template (PDF) of the Cross of St. James to decorate the tart. Print it off and cut it out. Iglesia de Santa Ana (Church of Santa Ana) Wolfgang Holzem, CC BY-SA 4.0 In 1520, Cristóbal de Ponte, the founder of Garachico, ceded a plot to construct the church. The dedication of the church to Saint Anne was inspired by his wife, Ana de Vergara. Cristóbal de Ponte (~1447-1532) was born in Genoa (Italy) and died in Tenerife. He participated with other compatriots, in financing the conquest of Tenerife; and his financial contribution must have been important, judging by the generous distributions of lands that resulted. Historian Cioranescu, relates that Cristóbal de Ponte was the first inhabitant of Garachico “at least, the first whose memory has been preserved. He had a house on his land since before 1499; he made a sugar mill around 1501 and water saw around 1504”. "... a native of Genoa, patrician of said city and whose name was inscribed in the Libro d'oro della nobiltà di Genova (Golden Book of that city). He passed to Spain and entered the service of the Catholic Monarchs, who authorised him to attend the conquest of the Canary Islands and there he rendered important services to the Spanish sovereigns. These, to reward him, granted him extensive divisions in the district of Daute, Tenerife Island, where he settled in 1497. In the year 1500 he founded the city and port of Garachico." Son of the also Genoese, Juan Esteban de Ponte, he lived in La Caleta de San Pedro, and his estate in El Tanque was located in the Realexo de Daute, above Garachico. He built on his property the chapel of Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles, later San Sebastián, where he maintained a clergyman chaplain. Cristóbal de Ponte married, in 1503, Ana de Vergara, who died in 1514, daughter of García de Vergara and María Hernández and sister of fellow conquistador and Sevillian Jewish converso, Pedro de Vergara. Cristóbal de Ponte, overlooking the Parque Puerta de la Tierra On the wall overlooking the Puerta de la Tierra in the park of the same name in Garachico, is this bust of Cristóbal de Ponte. To commemorate him, the sculptor Eladio de la Cruz, made a high relief, bronze bust of the founder who appears flanked by the coats of arms of Genoa and Garachico. The work is displayed on three natural stone monoliths designed by Lorenzo Dorta García. Several anchors, some from the old port and others donated by the port authority of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, complete a paved and landscaped complex. In 1527 Ponte was summoned by the Inquisition and excused himself by saying he could not come because of his many years and ailments. In later writing he alleges that he is a sick man, very weak and skinny and has lost much of his sight in such a way that it is necessary for him to have a guide. Cristóbal de Ponte's will was opened upon his death in 1532, on May 11, before Antón Martín, public notary of Daute. His sons Bartolomé de Ponte retained the inheritance of Daute and Pedro de Ponte, that of Adeje. Chayotas (Chayotes) You may be wondering what chayotas (Chayotes) are, well it's a fruit (Sechium edule) of the (Cucurbitaceae) gourd family (courgette, pumpkin, cucumber, squash, marrow, watermelon) although it is usually treated like a vegetable. Native to South America, it reached the Old World during the so-called Columbian exchange. It has an oval shape, similar to a pear, the skin can be light green or dark green depending on the variety, with deep indentations and small soft spines. It is not usual to see it in supermarkets, because it's not very commercial, but it is found in municipal and farmers' markets. Chayota or chayote is very suitable for people who want to lose weight, since it contains very few calories and due to its high potassium content, helps eliminate fluid retention. Ingredients: 3 large chayotas 200g ground meat (half beef and half pork) 1 onion 2 or 3 garlic cloves 1/2 green pepper 2 tomatoes Oregano Black pepper Salt Oil White wine Parmesan For the Béchamel: 25 grams of butter 50 grams of flour 450 ml milk Nutmeg Black pepper Salt Method: Cut the chayotas in half and soak them with plenty of water (to cover them) for about 15 or 20 minutes, so that they lose the gelatinous substance inside. Drain the chayotas, with a knife scrape the remains of the sticky substance. With a sharp knife, extract the seed from the centre, leaving a hole, and remove the skin. Put plenty of water in a large pan, add salt, and cook the chayotas until tender (about 20 minutes approximately), you can also steam them. They must be done but al dente, so they do not fall apart. Meanwhile, peel the garlic and onion, chop them small and in a pan with a little oil, sauté them. Add the finely diced pepper and sauté. When the onion mixture is becoming translucent, add the meat, season to taste, add a little oregano and sauté over high heat until the meat is golden brown. Add a splash of white wine and reduce. Then add the finely chopped tomato and continue sautéing until everything is well combined. Fill the chayota halves and arrange them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or greased with a little oil, cover them with the béchamel sauce and sprinkle with the grated cheese. Gratin in the oven at 200ºC, until golden brown on top. Preparation of the béchamel: Melt the butter in a saucepan. Add the flour and brown it a little until it forms a paste and takes color. Add the milk slowly and beat continuously with a whisk, over medium heat. Season with salt, black pepper and a little nutmeg and continue stirring until it begins to thicken, then remove from heat and immediately pour it over the chayotas. Palacio de la Capitanía General de Canarias Koppchen, CC BY 3.0 An assassination attempt led Franco to shout "Socorro, auxilio, pistoleros" (Help, help, gunmen), when they tried to enter his room at the Military Command of the Canary Islands, today Palacio de la Capitanía General de Canarias, located in the Plaza Weyler, by force. He had been in the capital of Tenerife for a few months - having arrived in Tenerife on Friday, March 13, 1936 - Franco knew that he was going to be the target of an attack, so he took great precautions. Among them, sleeping with the doors and windows completely closed. The book Crónica de Vencidos (Chronicle of the Vanquished), by the researcher Ricardo García Luis, collects several testimonies about that attempted attack on Franco on the night of July 14, 1936 in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. One of those testimonies is from Antonio Tejera Alonso, known as Antoñé. According to the author, this man from Tenerife was one of the three anarchists who wanted to kill Franco that hot night, 85 years ago. They were not alone. They had help inside and outside the organization. One of the essential collaborators for his plan to go well was María Culi Palou, a 42-year-old Catalan living in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. She was the owner of the Odeón restaurant, but she also ran a soldiers' canteen located on one of the sides of the Captaincy General. This woman, known as Maruca, spent many years in prison accused of helping the resistance fighting the dictatorship. In her file, she appears as a liaison agent for extremist elements and she was tried and sentenced on January 11, 1937 along with 60 other people. Lieutenant General Francisco Franco Salgado-Araujo, in his book Mi vida junto a Franco (My life with Franco), also writes about this: “In July, at the insistence of the anonymous information I received, in which it was said that the plans to assassinate Franco were still being prepared, I decided to reinforce the Captaincy guard and increase the personal escort of officers (…) One evening several soldiers who were on duty noticed that someone was moving and taking shelter in the trees that were next to the wall of the building. They fired quickly making several individuals flee. There were three of them and they entered the recently opened streets that were in that sector”. Days after the frustrated plan to kill him, on July 18, 1936, Franco prompted Golpe de Estado (coup) that started the Spanish Civil War. Researcher Pedro Medina Sanabria tells us that on July 18, 1936: "With the first rays of the sun on July 18, 1936, Commander Alfonso Moreno Ureña occupied the Civil Government of Santa Cruz Tenerife, with the infantry troops under his command. They were joined by the forces in charge of the custody and defence of the Civil Government itself, who did not present any resistance." The Civil Government building was that of the old Palacio de Carta, located in the Plaza de la República, formerly known as Plaza de la Constitución, which is today Plaza de la Candelaria number nine. The version of the events of July 18, 1936, by the journalist Víctor Zurita Soler (1891 - 1974), founder of “La Tarde”, a Tenerife evening newspaper for 55 years, (1927 to 1982), published in 1937 the book «In Tenerife Franco planned the nationalist movement» subtitled «Anecdotes and scenes from the stay of the Generalissimo in the Canary Islands and his departure for Tetouan». Reports with which the newspaper "La Tarde" reached unusual circulation numbers for its time, written in a language considered very journalistic and even colloquial, collecting various testimonies, among which those that Víctor Zurita Soler received directly from the Colonel Chief of the General Staff of Franco in Tenerife, Teódulo González Peral: "I can assure you that a state of war could be declared in Tenerife from one o'clock in the evening, when we became aware of the military movement in Morocco. From here we communicated to General Franco the news of the Uprising in Africa, and if the time was delayed, it was only to hope that it would simultaneously take place in Las Palmas. I can also add that we had specific instructions to make the declaration of a state of war here, given by General Franco in person, as soon as we were cut off from him or something happened in the city or on the island that required it." Mr. González Peral adds: “At one o'clock [on July 18, 1936] and meeting in his office, the military commander Mr. [José] Cáceres [Sánchez]; The auditor, Mr. [José] Samsó [Henríquez] and the main corps chiefs, an urgent radio [message] was received from Melilla, which notified the uprising of the African forces, news that we were already waiting for. Then I called the Las Palmas General Staff Commander by phone, so that he could get in touch with General Franco, indicating what was happening and urging him on the urgency of the case. As time passed and I had no news from the neighbouring island, I decided to call the hotel where the general was staying by phone. It was two fifteen in the morning. Franco rested. "I called him given the urgency of the case. He came to the phone and I read him the text of the dispatch, the general then telling me that he would adopt all the pertinent provisions for the incorporation of Gran Canaria to the National Movement and that he would leave urgently for Gando, in order to take the plane that was prepared to take him to Morocco." "As far as Tenerife was concerned, I told the general that everything was ready and that a state of war could be declared; but that he could delay it until 5 in the morning, not a minute more." That night, meetings and lobbying had been held in the Civil Government and the governor in person had been called to a cable conference that was held from the Telegraph Centre, and in it it seems that the elements of the Government told him that there were rumours of a military uprising, to which the civil governor replied that as far as the Canary Islands were concerned, all the precautions were taken. He spent the night at the Military Command. The surveillance in the barracks was reinforced; Orders were issued for the entire officers to concentrate on them and whatever provisions were appropriate were adopted in such a serious case. Some officers came to the Command to ask me if something abnormal was happening, and I was forced to hide the truth from everyone, which they would soon learn, telling them then, to get out of the way, that we had news that an attempt was being made an assault on the barracks. Naturally, not everyone was very convinced by my words. Later, in agreement with Colonel [José] Cáceres [Sánchez], I gave orders that at five o'clock in the morning, the strategic points of the city be taken, the State of War be declared and the Civil Government be taken. What will it cost? At five o'clock the troops left the barracks and entered the Plaza de la Constitución through the streets of Cruz Verde, Candelaria and Avenida Marítima, surrounding the building by its two facades. This was done without the slightest incident occurring. The director of the National Telephone Company, Mr. Mestres, received at nightfall on the 17th, several urgent radiotelephone calls from Madrid, asking him if something was happening in the Canary Islands. Mr. Mestres - the colonel of the General Staff continues to speak, visited me to convey the question that was being asked from Madrid. I replied that absolutely nothing happened in the Canary Islands, as it was, in fact, since nothing had happened up to that moment, but this put us on our guard and we were constantly listening. Next, Mr. González Peral tells us about a singularly painful matter. He thus manifests it to us when he begins to refer it to us and that anguish is noticed when looking at the face of the prestigious military commander who provides us with these data, or perhaps only when noticing his voice veiled by a hint of regret. The civil governor, condemned by a council of war, and later shot, could have saved his life. When General Franco was threatened with death in Tenerife, I went - says the colonel - to visit the now deceased Mr. Vázquez Moro to demand more than beg him to establish a close watch to avoid the attack prepared against the military commander of the Archipelago. The governor gladly offered to please me and arranged for two agents of the Vigilance Corps to discreetly accompany the general and guard him. The service, however, was incomplete since a car was not made available to these police officers so that they could closely follow the general, since he always travelled by car. In any case, I thanked Mr. [Manuel] Vázquez Moro for his request and told him: As things are going, it is not difficult that in not too distant time you will need, - to save yourself from revolutionary extremism, from the help of the military element, and by when that time comes I promise you my help. When the national movement exploded and once the one who had been governor had been detained in his rooms of the civil government, I sent an official of my trust to that building to meet with him and tell him that he ratified me in the previous offer. There was nothing to fear, since I was ready - and General Franco would have approved my resolution - to make him leave Spain, the former governor fixing in advance the place abroad where he wanted to reside. But the sad thing was that Mr. Vázquez Moro later broke his promise not to leave his private rooms in the Government building and that he was reckless in arriving at the assembly hall and leaning out on the main balcony, giving rise with his attitude to an uprising that it had serious consequences and could have had much worse. That relieved me of the moral commitment. He was later subjected to summary and well known is the result.[1] The colonel concentrated his thoughts for a moment and finally replied: The governor was a good person; but he did not have good advisers. There is no doubt that these provoked and precipitated his ruin. On Saturday, the 18th, at six in the afternoon, a bloody collision took place between the Army forces that were garrisoning the Civil Government building and a fraction made up of twelve guards from the Assault Section of this capital, under the command of a lieutenant, those who were located in some houses and rooftops of the Plaza de la Constitución (now Plaza de la Candelaria) and from there they fired on the infantry soldiers located in front of the aforementioned Civil Government building. In the skirmish, which did not take on any greater character thanks to the promptness and courage used by force, an Assault agent was killed and another wounded. However, there are no events as the Bishopric has suspended acts of worship and processions outside the churches, because of the ongoing pandemic. Tegueste Council, "in its commitment to supporting the handicraft sector", has organized a Local Craft Fair, which will take place on the weekend of April 10 and 11 at the Mercado del Agricultor de Tegueste Farmer's Market, from 9:00 a.m. at 2:00 p.m.. Mayor of Tegueste, Ana Rosa Mena, explained that the Fair, which had been postponed at Christmas due to the COVID-19 pandemic, will comply with the access restrictions and security measures dictated by the health authorities to avoid contagion. "Guaranteeing the safety of the participating artisans, as well as visitors is our priority," said Mena. Likewise, the Councillor for Crafts, Eladia López, announced that in total there will be 20 artisans who will participate in this fair and that they are specialized in ceramics, embroidery, jewellery and textile manufacturing, among other disciplines. “It is a great opportunity to show support for local artisans, especially this sector that has been so hit by the crisis generated by COVID-19, and that is part of the culture, traditions and lifestyle of the municipality”, said the councillor. Rambla de Santa Cruz Koppchen, CC BY 3.0 La Rambla was ordered to be built by Captain General Gerónimo de Benavente y Quiñones, to show off his brand new horse carriage, the first to arrive in Tenerife. The Rambla de Santa Cruz had its origin in the section between the Camino de los Campos (Jose Naveiras street) and Santa Rita street (Viera y Clavijo) when, in 1661, it was ordered to be built by Captain General Gerónimo de Benavente and Quiñones, in order for him to be able to show off his brand new horse carriage, the first to arrive in Tenerife, which is why it was known as Paseo de los Coches (literally Ride of Cars). Captain General Jaime Ortega expanded it in 1854, resulting in a beautiful three-lane avenue, in which 336 trees were planted in its central part. The City Council, in gratitude, then named it Paseo de Ortega. Plaza de la Paz Santa Cruz de Tenerife Mataparda, CC BY 3.0 In 1917 the section called Rambla XI de Febrero was inaugurated, which ran from the Mandillo bridge Plaza de Toros (Santa Cruz Bullring) to the Cuatro Caminos Plaza de la Paz. Starting from the Plaza de la Paz, a name that commemorates the end of the Great War, the Rambla continued south, along the so-called Camino de la Costa, where the current avenues of La Asunción (1924) and Reyes Católicos would be formed (1932). On June 23, 1924, the section that ran from Viera y Clavijo Street to the Plaza de Toros, the City Council agreed to name it Marcos Peraza –Mayor of Santa Cruz in 1912– and Rambla de Isabel II, from Viera y Clavijo to Almeyda. It would be on October 5, 1936 when the route that runs from the Plaza de la Paz to Calle Doctor Naveiras, was called Rambla del General Franco. In April 1940, the section that runs from Calle Doctor Naveiras to Calle San Isidro was added and, the following year, it would continue to link it with the San Andrés highway, now Avenida Francisco La Roche. The Rambla de Santa Cruz, as it has been named since 2008 (in accordance with the Ley de la Memoria Histórica (Historical Memory Law), is the city's diagonal road for two kilometers. It has four lanes for traffic, two in each direction, and a central pedestrian promenade, lined with Indian laurels, Lebanese bananas, flamboyants (Framboyán de Madagascar Delonix regia) and palm trees, as well as flower beds adorned with seasonal flowers. This place is known as La Estatua (The Statue), because it was the first public representation of a person who settled in the streets of this city, and for many years it would be the only one. The Statue pays tribute to the heroic Infantry Captain Diego Fernández Ortega, a native of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, who died on January 5, 1915, in the war in Africa. His heroic behaviour was so admired by his comrades in arms that to immortalize his figure they opened a subscription and erected this monument, giving it to his hometown on July 25, 1915. Made by the sculptor Enrique Cuartero y Huerta, on its pedestal there are inscriptions with the feats that led to successive promotions and decorations because, at the time of his death, at 26 years of age, he was in possession of seven medals, including the First Class Cross of Military Merit with a red badge and the First Class Cross of the Order of María Cristina, awarded posthumously.
