This secret service activity is perfect for Activity Days and Girl Scouts. The kids get to be trained as Secret Service agents and go on a spy mission!
Thought I would share another activity I had with my Activity Days girls last week. We were on a mission, we went undercover and performed 7 days worth of SecRet SerViCe. Before we got started we talked a bit about service and the blessings that come when we help others. I found some manila envelopes at the dollar store and personalized them with their names on them. Inside I included a pen and these "forms" that they were to fill out during the activity. I also included a list of ideas for serving to help get them going. I was also lucky to find these fun "undercover" glasses to stick inside. Just to help them really get into the part...AND they would know if anyone sneaking up on them ;) (they really did kind of work!) The girls thought it was great. Honestly, I was pretty surprised with how excited they were to get going on their challenge. A lot of them told me they were going to go home and get started right away. Just goes to show that it doesn't take much (couple of bucks at the dollar store) to get kids excited about doing things for others. It turned out to be a fun, easy way to teach the important principal of SeRviNg oTheRS...
Sonya d’Artois parachuted into occupied France under the cover of darkness in late May 1944, and along with other female agents working in secret, helped the Allied forces make their D-Day landings and ultimately win the Second World War.

**Consider yourself pretty special that you're allowed to view this SECRET AGENT BIRTHDAY OPERATION. You see, only SECRET AGENTS were invited to my 11 year old's SPY THEMED PARTY. (Cue the James Bond theme song...) Invitations were sent to the special SECRET AGENTS. They read as follows: YOUR SECRET MISSION, IF YOU CHOOSE TO ACCEPT IT, IS TO HELP CELEBRATE THE 11TH BIRTHDAY OF AGENT JACOB ALL SECRET AGENTS MUST REPORT TO THE SPY TRAINING CENTER (aka-jacob's home) SPY TRAINING WILL INCLUDE: MESSAGE DECODING BOMB DISABLING TARGET PRACTICE SEARCH OPTICS SPECIAL OPERATIONS PLEASE NOTIFY THE SPY AGENCY (aka-jacob's parents) WITH YOUR INTENTIONS. THE TRAINING CENTER WAS SET UP... APPROPRIATE SPY COLORS WERE DECIDED ON... RED AND BLACK. WAITING AT EACH PLACE SETTING WAS: *BLACK T-SHIRT (every spy must wear black.) *MAGNIFYING GLASSES like these: *NOTEBOOKS(mini spiral) *DARK SHADES THE PLAY ROOM WAS SET UP WITH LOTS OF PRACTICE TARGETS. WE HUNG BALLOONS FROM THE CEILING. A LAMINATE BOARD WAS PROPPED UP. VINYL CIRCLES WERE STUCK ON THE BOARD FOR TARGETS. BOMB CAKE WAS ASSEMBLED. (It almost killed me, but that's what bombs do, right?) I used a sports ball cake pan and covered the entire thing with marshmallow fondant. The knob on top is fondant and the fuse is black licorice. THE SNACKS WERE ARRANGED. (The Birthday party was in the afternoon, so no meal was needed. Gotta love that!) SNACKS INCLUDED: CHEETOS aka- LASER HOT BULLETS GRAPES aka- EXPLOSIVES SLIM JIM SAUSAGE STICKS aka- DYNAMITE STICKS FORTUNE COOKIES aka- UNDERCOVER SECRET MESSAGES (I hid clues in the fortune cookies and sealed the packages back up with my iron...crazy, I know...but it worked!) DRINKS- CAPRI SUN aka- PACKETS OF ADRENALINE AND OF COURSE THE BOMB CAKE! JUNIOR MINT CANDIES WERE USED ON THE PLATTER. THE AGENDA WAS MADE AND THE AGENTS ARRIVED! FIRST: DRESS CODE AND PHOTO OPS. (I set up a black photo booth to capture their spy poses.) NEXT: DECIPHERING CODES MY SON IS REALLY INTO CODE MAKING. HE MADE ALL KINDS OF CODES FOR HIS FRIENDS TO FIGURE OUT. SOME OF THE CODES WERE A BIT TRICKY, SO MY SON HAD TO EXPLAIN HIMSELF...BUT EVENTUALLY ALL WERE CRACKED. NEXT: LASER BEAM TRAINING RED CREPE PAPER TAPED BETWEEN CABINETS= LASER BEAMS! EACH TIME THEY WENT THROUGH THE BEAMS, WE ADDED MORE LASERS. WE WERE SHOCKED THAT THESE 'AGENTS' LOVED THIS SIMPLE ACTIVITY! THEY WANTED TO DO THIS OVER AND OVER. NEXT: BOMB DISABLING WE HID A SECRET CLUE IN ONE OF THE BALLOONS. THE AGENT'S JOB WAS TO 'DISABLE' (POP) ALL THE 'BOMBS' (BALLOONS)AND FIND THE CLUE. (I had the grandparents help throw the bombs on the kids.) I should mention that all the clues were typed in 2pt. font which had to be read by their magnifying glasses. (You've got to challenge these kids every now and then, right?) THIS WAS THE CLUE INSIDE THE BOMB: CLUE #1: YOU MUST WORK AS A TEAM TO LOCATE THE MISSING AMMUNITION. AGENT BLAKE MUST RETRIEVE AND READ THE FIRST CLUE LOCATED INSIDE HIS GOODIE BAG. (I wanted them to work as a team, yet make sure everyone got a chance to read the clues.) INSIDE THE GOODIE BAG: CLUE #2: BRRR! CHICKEN. AGENT DILLON MUST READ THE NEXT CLUE. INSIDE THE FREEZER: CLUE #3: ACE, JACK, QUEEN, KING AGENT AKSHAY MUST READ THE NEXT CLUE. INSIDE THE DECK OF CARDS LOCATED IN THE GAME BIN: CLUE #4: 88 KEYS AGENT DYLAN MUST READ THE NEXT CLUE. INSIDE THE PIANO: CLUE #5: GREEN EGGS AND HAM AGENT JACOB MUST READ THE NEXT CLUE. INSIDE THE GREEN EGGS AND HAM BOOK LOCATED ON THE BOOKSHELF: CLUE #6: FINAL LOCATION GREASY FLAMES (It took a bit of time, but they figured out that the ammunition was inside the bar-b-que on the back deck.) NEXT: TARGET PRACTICE (This post contains affiliate links to help you locate products.) We purchased little NERF guns like these Nerf N-Strike Jolt Blaster (blue) for each agent. My son told me that spies must have smaller weapons that can be easily concealed. (This didn't bother me one bit.) ONE BY ONE THE AGENTS TOOK TURNS SHOOTING AT THE TARGETS. SOME MOVES REQUIRED ROLLING ON THE FLOOR AND SHOOTING, OTHER MOVES REQUIRED SHOOTING FROM BEHIND A CORNER. NEXT: SPECIAL OPERATION AFTER A BIT OF PRACTICE, WE TOOK A BREAK FOR GIFTS, SNACKS AND CAKE. AS THE AGENTS WERE EATING THEIR CAKE, THEY NOTICED A CLUE. (While they weren't watching I scooped up their guns and hid them. Then, when I served the cake, I cleverly hid a secret clue under their food. Moms can be pretty sneaky.) NEXT: LOCATE WEAPONS CLUE #1 YOU MUST REMAIN CALM. TRY TO FIND YOUR MISSING WEAPON WITHOUT SAYING A WORD. BREAK OPEN YOUR FORTUNE AND READ YOUR CLUE SILENTLY. DO NOT LET ANYONE KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING. (I slipped a clue inside the fortune cookies. Using tweezers, I was able to remove most of the original fortunes. Remember, every clue was printed in size 2 font.) I wanted to give the agents a chance to solve a case on their own. It was so much fun watching which agents could follow directions! CLUE #2: YOU MUST LOCATE YOUR WEAPON BEFORE SOMEONE ELSE DOES. LOOK UNDER YOUR CHAIR. CLUE #3: DO NOT LET OTHERS SEE YOU AS YOU SNEAK TO THE BATHROOM. LOOK UNDER THE TISSUES FOR YOUR NEXT CLUE. CLUE #4: QUICKLY GO TO THE ROOM WITH THE FIREPLACE. DROP AND GIVE ME: 5 PUSH UPS 5 JUMPING JACKS 5 SIT UPS THEN, READ THE CLUE LOCATED INSIDE THE LOWER CABINET DOOR. CLUE#5: YOU'RE ALMOST THERE! GO TO THE WASHING MACHINE AND FIND YOUR WEAPON. GOOD WORK, AGENT! After all the agents finally had a chance to locate their weapon and finish their snacks, we moved to the garage and the... MINEFIELD TRAINING This is a simple game that requires thinking and memory skills. A grid is made on the floor using sheets of paper and duct tape. We made our grid 5 sheets wide by 5 sheets tall= 25 sheets total. The 'designer' of the game makes a plan of where the secret mines will be. Writing them out on paper is very helpful. The 'designer' decides the route the agent must take to get across the minefield. It's the agent's job to figure out the safe route. One by one an agent steps on a square of paper. The 'designer' lets them know if they're safe or if they've stepped on a mine. If they're safe, they may move to another sheet of paper. If they've stepped on a mine 'BOOM!', they're out and must go to the back of the line. The next agent must try to remember where it is safe to step. Agents may only step forward or sideways. They must try to get all the way across the minefield without stepping on a mine. (The agents were pretty sharp and we played this game at least 5 times!) NEXT: FREE SHOOTING LARGE CARDBOARD APPLIANCE BOXES WERE PLACED ALL OVER OUR GARAGE. THE LIGHTS IN THE GARAGE WERE TURNED OUT. THE AGENTS MADE TEAMS AND THE SHOOTING BEGAN. (Yes, I'm aware that this only sounds fun to 11 year old boys.) (Actually, 11 year old boys AND 40 year old boys. AH-Awesome Husband joined in.) 30 MINUTES LATER... DEPARTURE! PARENTS ARRIVED TO PICK UP SOME VERY SWEATY AGENTS! HAPPY BIRTHDAY, KID...I MEAN AGENT. This post contains affiliate links to help you locate products. Are you ready to help us find the nation's missing laptops with top secret government information on them? My kids were, and this led to probably the best lesson to date in my teaching career. After my visit to the Ron Clark Academy (post on that below or here), I have been filled with ideas and inspiration on ways to engage my students. In math we have to give our students time to practice the skill we are teaching them, and I could've given them a worksheet to practice, but that wasn't going to fly. I saw Hope King's Set the Stage to Engage series this summer, and she did a spy lab for non-fiction texts, so after looking at her pictures, I made it my own for my kids. We were working on adding and subtracting fractions, and their skills were tested during this unit. I'll start with the set-up, and it was easy. The hardest thing for me was figuring out how I wanted to set up my desks! Oops! I made my desks into three groups (math groups) because my activity was differentiated and I wanted them to be able to talk to their math groups throughout. I made a spy area in the back of my room using string and black lights. This is where the clues were housed. I had all of my lights off and my window blacked out with black butcher paper from our art teacher. They saw by using push lights from Walmart. I got all of the set up idea from Hope King! I had my art teacher bring my students to me from specials, and I was standing outside my door, in my black sunglasses and black blazer with my iPad ready to let my fellow agents in. They were asked to sit on the carpet when they entered the room. I filled my students in on the issue the government had called for our help on. After that we were on the clock to figure out who stole the iPads from our school that the government was housing top-secret information. Every student had a file folder with a letter about the situation, their first clue, and a clue tracking sheet. Once all the expectations were given, the agents were off to work. I put on a little background music to set the stage, and intensify the situation! They had to solve each problem using their yellow notepad and when they finished with a clue, they went on to another with my approval. My favorite part of the room was the clue area. I have a wide range of abilities in my classroom, so I differentiated for my three groups. Most students ended around the same time, and they had to work with their group to make a final decision about who they thought stole the laptops. I had an idea during the lesson to have my dad call at the end and say he was with the White House. I told my kids they had to come up with a final decision because someone would be calling us from the White House. "THE WHITE HOUSE?? Like where Obama lives??" So I texted him and never heard back so I didn't think he could but left my ringer on loud just in case. At the end of my lesson, my ringer went off, and it was madness in my room. "Oh my gosh, oh my gosh, oh my gosh!!" Once they got quiet, I picked up and my dad asked who they thought the culprit was, and my students told him the clues led them to believe it was our principal. He said,"Agents, thank you for your hard work, I'll share this information with the president. Hopefully we can work again soon." Their reactions were great, "Did we seriously just talk to someone from the White House?" "I cannot wait to tell my mom!" As a result of my RCA experience, I am trying my hardest to find ways to engage my students in different and unique ways, and I learned its importance through this activity when every single student is working hard and independently. I hate to admit this, but I was fighting back tears because of how hard they were working! I am working on getting this made into a product for my TPT store. So check back soon! If you have any questions on anything I did for this lesson, feel free to email me at [email protected]

Constructing Triangles from Angles. This Secret Agent Mission can be used to practice finding the missing angle in triangles. Students must know that the sum of the angles in a triangle is 180˚. Optional - Students will practice classifying triangles by their sides (scalene triangle, equilateral triangle, isosceles triangle) and angles (acute triangle, right triangle, obtuse triangle). Printable & Digital (EDITABLE). You want to be a Secret Agent, but first, you need to complete a training mission. You have to split 30 angles, so that you get 10 sets from which you can make triangles. Be careful, as there are also bad combinations that seem good at first. If at the end, you have angles that you are not able to create good sets from, it means that you have to change something in the ones you have already completed. If you complete this training mission, you will earn the Secret Agent Badge. BREAKOUT, Escape From Ordinary To Extraordinary Sometimes our ordinary life can make us feel trapped. We can feel trapped by our worries, our doubts, our fears, and our sin. Sometimes we just wish we could break out and be free from these struggles. To get the additional images, bumper video, countdown video, and games videos pictured above make sure you select the "VBS + Media Pack" option above. All of these additional videos and images sell for $35, but you can get them all for only $25 when you order them together with the Breakout VBS. (Click here to see more details on everything included in the media pack). _______ BREAKOUT VBS Overview Memory Verse: “He has saved us from the kingdom of darkness. He has brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves.” Colossians 1:13 (NIrV) Lessons: Day 1. Jonah – Breakout From Disobedience Scripture: Jonah 1 & 2, Jonah Flees Lesson for Day 1: God had a plan – both for Jonah and for the city of Nineveh. But Jonah wanted no part of it, so he ran away. He then found himself trapped in the belly of a fish. His only hope to break out was to finally acknowledge and follow God's plan. Big Idea for Day 1: God Has A Plan For Me Day 2. David – Breakout from Getting Even Scripture: 1 Samuel 24:1-17, David Spares Saul's Life Lesson for Day 2: If King Saul had known that David and his men were hiding in the cave, they could have been trapped. Instead, it was David who had the upper hand. Instead of hurting or killing King Saul, David had mercy on him. If we want to break out of the ordinary, we need to love others like God loves us. Big Idea for Day 2: God Loves and Forgives Me Day 3. Daniel – Breakout from Danger Scripture: Daniel 6:10-27, Daniel and the Den of Lions Lesson for Day 3: Because of his love of God, Daniel was thrown into a pit filled with hungry lions. There is nothing Daniel could have done in his own strength to break out. But Daniel trusted in God, who is in control of every situation we face. Big Idea for Day 3: God Is In Control, Not Me Day 4. Jesus – The Greatest Breakout Scripture: John 19:38-20:18, Jesus' Burial and Resurrection Lesson for Day 4: Each of us have sinned. Sin separates us from God, and earns us death. Jesus went to the cross to die. Although he never sinned, he took the punishment for your sin, my sin, and everyone’s sin on himself because He loves us. Three days after he died, Jesus did the ultimate breakout, rising from the dead! Because Jesus is alive, we can have new life too. Big Idea for Day 4: God Sent Jesus To Set Me Free Day 5. Peter – Prison Breakout Scripture: Acts 12:1-19, Peter's Miraculous Escape From Prison Lesson for Day 5: Peter was in prison for telling people about the new life that Jesus gives us. His friends were praying that Peter would be released. In the middle of the night, an angel came, to break out Peter. Living an ordinary life can make us feel trapped, but God can set us free.
