Each year during the months of November and December grey seals come to the beach of Donna Nook (Lincolnshire - UK) to give birth to their pups. After a week or three, when the pups are weaned, the females are ready to mate, causing bloody fights among the competing bulls. The area is near an RAF bombing range, but the seals don’t seem to be disturbed by the noise of the planes. They are even doing better than elsewhere in the UK. Donna Nook turns out to be a safe place, and has the best statistics for pup survivals. But Unfortunately there is also a downside: some of the visitors and photographers get too close to the seals, so that the mothers panic and abandon their pups. For that reason we decided to stay in the fenced area and not to go out on the beach. Most of the main pottery companies have had flirtations with using various marine themed designs. The sleek, sinuous and diverse shapes of most aquatic animals make them an obvious choice for decorating curvy pottery forms and the multitude of intense colours in the sea world are well suited to the rich glazing palettes. I have included some examples from Moorcroft, Martin Brothers, Haeger, Royal Doulton, Hornsea, Bornholm, Zsolnay and other fine works from individual ceramicists.
