One of my best friends, Natalie, came across this neat science experiment on a third grade blog. (Click here to see the blog post.) This was the perfect experiment to complete with our unit of matter. Natalie is always thinking of fun "hands on" experiments, where I tend to stick to discussions and worksheets. She bought her students fun Halloween themed gummy candy, where as I just grabbed some plain jane gummy bears from my stash at home. Yes, I admit that I want to be a student in Natalie's class. Click here to download the worksheet that Natalie created to go with this experiment. (Thanks again sweet friend!) Miscellaneous: - Each student was given a ruler and magnifying glass. (Yet again- Natalie came to the rescue with a class set of magnifying glasses!) - Students wrote their initials on the cup with a Sharpee. - Students were called up one by one to our sink. They dropped their gummy bear in the cup, added just enough water to cover it, and placed it in the blue basket. Afterwards, I moved the blue basket up to the top of a book shelf. I wanted them to be surprised the next day! - My students waited 24 hours before examining the bears on the second day. - I gave each student a napkin on the second day. I dumped the water out of each cup before giving them the gummy bear. They dumped the gummy bear out on their napkin and made observations. Day 1- Gummy Bears Day 2- Gummy Bears

We are currently learning about different animal traits. When I ran across the book, “What if You Had Animal Hair?” my teacher heart did a little thump. I knew that my kiddos would fall in love with this book AND they did! J After we read the book, I pulled all of my animal books and let them do a little research and decide what animal hair they would like to have. Once they chose an animal, they wrote one reason why they would like to have that animal's hair and one fact about the animal. I put out a tub of scrap paper then let them create their animal hair. Are you teaching the new "Next Generation Science Standards?" This Fast and Slow Changes Unit is jam packed with hands on learning opportunities that are quick and easy to set up. This includes 9 experiments and one opportunity for your students to engineer their own experiment for weathering and erosion! The following Next Generation Science Standards* will be covered in this unit: 2-ESS1-1 Some events happen very quickly; others occur very slowly, over a time period much longer than one can observe. (WEATHERING, EROSION, DEPOSITION} {4-ESS1-1 Patterns of rock formations reveal changes over time due to earth forces, such as earthquakes. The presence and location of certain fossil types indicate the order in which rock layers were formed. (ROCKS, TYPES-IGNEOUS, SEDIMENTARY, METAMORPHIC, ROCK CYCLE)} 2-ESS1-1 Students who demonstrate understanding can use information from several sources to provide evidence that Earth events can occur quickly or slowly. (Clarification statement: Examples of events and timescales could include volcanic explosions and earthquakes, which happen quickly and erosion of rocks, which occurs slowly.) 2-ESS2-1 Wind and water can change the shape of the land. 4-ESS2-1 Rainfall helps shape the land. Water, ice, wind, living organisms, and gravity break rocks, soils, and sediments into smaller particles and move them around. 2-ESS2-1 Students who demonstrate understanding can compare multiple solutions designed to slow or prevent wind or water from changing the shape of the land. (Clarification statement: examples of solutions could include different designs of dikes and windbreaks to hold back wind and water, and different designs for using shrubs, grass, and trees to hold back the land.) I hope you and your students find this resource useful in your NGSS classroom. Please note the following: *Next Generation Science Standards is a registered trademark of Achieve. I love teaching social studies! I think it is an interesting and fun subject! I do hear from many of my pre-service teachers that they previously believed that social studies was usually boring and dry. It is my great pleasure to show them that there are many ways to engage students in the learning process. The key to engaging students in a content heavy subject like social studies is to have different ways to provide input and different ways to provide output. Today I am going to talk about one strategy for output. I call this a triarama. The triarama is named not for having three sections, but for the basic building block being a triangle. The triarama can be used to convey any topic in social studies. I start with a square. Then I cut the square from one corner to the center. Fold as in the photo. This is one of four sections of the triarama. Have students decorate and add words or phrases to convey their understanding. The four sections are then put together. Students can give an oral presentation about their understanding. These examples are on the topic of events leading up to The American Revolution. Enjoy the triarama. Students love them!
