Schoon hé? Ik ben hier best wel een beetje trots op! Ik heb dit project dan ook direct verwerkt in een nieuwe banner voor mijn blog :) 😊. Lovely, isn't it? I am proud of this new project. That's why I used it for my new banner 😊. Onlangs zat ik een paar dagen in de zetel met een microobje en ik heb van deze gelegenheid gebruik gemaakt om een eerste sashikoproject te maken. Van de nood een deugd maken noemt men dat... A while ago I had to spend some time at my couch being sick. I found it the perfect occasion to start my first sashikoproject. In november volgde ik een workshop sashiko in de Rotterdamse textielfabrique. Voor de workshop werd gevraagd om een kapotte jeansbroek mee te brengen. Nu heb ik ondertussen - mede doordat ik er voor opriep in mijn omgeving - best wel wat kapotte jeansbroeken in huis. Maar geen 1 waar ik nog in kon. Last november I participated at a workshop sashiko at the 'textielfabrique' in Rotterdam. The organisator asked to bring a denim trousers with some holes in it. I have a lot of damaged denims because I asked people to give them to me. But none of them fits me so I hadn't one suitable for this occasion. Maar ik had nog wel iets anders in huis : het eerste denim mozaïek kussen dat ik ooit maakte. Ik knipte toen namelijk de hoekjes van de naden af waardoor er in de hoeken tussen de vierkanten gaatjes kwamen te zitten. Dat leek me een geschikt alternatief... But I did have something else: my first homemade denim mozaïc pillow case . Because of a construction fault it had a lot of holes in it. So I decided to use that pillow case for the workshop. Tijdens de workshop zette ik er een eerste lapje op, maar ik was niet zo onder de indruk van het resultaat. Ik vond de techniek tof, maar ik wist niet zo goed hoe ik verder moest met dat kussen. At the work shop I added a first scrap of fabric but I wasn't that happy with the result: I loved the technique but I had no idea how to make it work on the pillow. Dus besloot ik het om te dopen tot sashiko-oefenproject en het helemaal vol te zetten met lapjes en steekjes. Ik was eigenlijk helemaal niet zeker of dat wel mooi zou worden, maar indien niet, dan was dat maar zo. I decided to use the pillow case as a sashiko pilot project and try different ways of using this technique. I was not sure the result would be ok, but if not, it didn't matter. Uren heb ik met naald en draad en met schaar en oude broeken in de zetel zitten naaien. Gewoon a la improviste: stukje uit een broek knippen, ergens op de kussensloop vastspelden en maar wat uitproberen met indigoblauw of naturelkleurig sashikogaren en naald. For hours I sat on the couch with needle, scissors, yarn and scraps of jeans. Sewing in an improvising way: cutting a piece of fabric, attaching it onto the pillowcase, and trying different things with indigo blue or natural colored sashiko yarn. Ik probeerde wat evenwicht in het ontwerp te houden door af te wisselen tussen de kleuren van lapjes en garen en allerlei verschillende motieven te gebruiken. I tried to find some balance in the design and experimented with motives and colors. En op het einde had ik dus dit :) . And at the end this was the result. Een kussensloop heeft natuurlijk 2 kanten en dat maakte het naaien op sommige plaatsen wat onhandiger zonder hulpmiddel. Ik naaide beide kanten dan ook een keertje per ongeluk aan mekaar. Problem: a pillow case has 2 sides and at one time I sewed them both together. Dus zocht ik een manier om dat te vermijden: ik stak een stevig stuk karton in de sloop en vouwde de sloop er omheen met het te borduren stuk bovenaan en zo kon ik veel makkelijker verder naaien. To prevent this from happening and to make this sewing more comfortable, I found a solution: I added a piece of strong cardboard between the 2 sides of the pillow case and folded the case around it with the piece I was working on on top. This made sewing a lot easier. Door dit project heb ik een hoop ideeën opgedaan en ga ik nog wat dingen proberen met deze techniek. 1 van mijn jeansbroeken gaat ook bewerkt worden met naald, draad, en lapjes. Al ga ik dat wat bescheidener houden dan dit kussen door hier en daar een klein stukje te borduren. Heel de broek kan ook mooi zijn, maar vermits mijn broeken heel snel stuk gaan zou dat wat zonde van het werk zijn. While making this project I got a lot of inspiration for next projects: one of my denim jeans will soon be decorated with somembroideryry sashiko wise. Ik vond het een heel plezant project om te maken: Ik doe graag dingen waarvan je snel resultaat ziet en bij dit project moet je niks voorbereiden en komt het allemaal zo nauw niet. Echt iets voor mij dus. I liked making this: I prefer projects with a fast results and for this project you don't have to make preparations and it doesn't matter if the stitches are straight or not. A perfect project for me! Ik stel trouwens vast dat ik tegenwoordig erg veel van deze kleur hou. Raar hoe dat zo kan veranderen hé. Vroeger zag ik niet zo graag blauw, ik was meer voor warme kleuren . Maar tegenwoordig puilt mijn kleerkast uit van het blauw en ook in mijn oorbellen merk ik dat ik hoe langer hoe vaker teruggrijp naar deze kleur. En met denim werk ik heel graag. Ik vind het bij alles passen en gewoon erg mooi. Ik droom er dan ook van ooit genoeg lef en tijd te vinden om eens een sprei of dekbedhoes te maken in denim en een overtrek voor mijn stokoude fauteuil. I notice I love this color a lot these days. Strange how things can change! I didn't like blue that much before, I prefered warm colours. But nowadays my closet is filled with clothes in blue and I also make a lot of jewelry in that colour. I also like to work with denim. It goes with everything and it is beautiful. I hope someday I find the guts, the energy and the time to make - in denim fabric - a plaid or a cover for my old armchair or both. Wil je dit zelf ook eens doen? Da's echt niet moeilijk. Dit heb je nodig: You want to make this for yourself too? It is not difficult. This is what you need: het voorwerp waar je op wil naaien (kledingstuk, gebruiksvoorwerp of gewoon een stuk stof) Garen. Ik gebruikte shashikogaren in natuurkleur en indigo maar je kan dat natuurlijk ook doen met ander materiaal en in andere kleuren. wat oude lappen, ik gebruikte oude jeansbroeken. stevige naald schaar eventueel een stevig stuk karton of een borduurring. kopspelden something to sew on (clothes, a utensil, a piece of fabric) yarn. I used sashiko yarn in natural color and indigo blue but you can use yarn of your own choice in any color you like. some old fabric. I used some old denim trousers. a big needle scissors optional: a piece of cardboard or an embroidery hoop pins ZO DOE JE HET/DIY: Knip willekeurig en zonder al te veel af te meten (bij cirkels deed ik dat wel, bij de rest niet) een stukje stof van je lapjes. Speld het op je ondergrond. En naai het lapje vast in de kettingsteek . Je mag er ruim over en naast naaien als je dat mooi vindt en de steken mogen wat rommelig en ongelijk zijn. Doe gewoon maar wat .... Cut some pieces of fabric without measuring them ( I only measured the cirkels). Pin them on your basic piece. And sew it using the chain stitch. Don't be precise. Traditional Japanese boro cloths have a beauty like no other. Each cloth tells a unique story of its journey through life with patches carefully sewed on and reinforced with stitching, often over generations of a single family.
What do you do with your waiting time? Those riding times - in the car, during a flight, on the train or a ferry ride even - when you're the passenger and can only sit and hope to reach your destination soon. Let's not forget those other waiting times when your children or loved ones are engaged in an activity that you are present at, but cannot participate in. Right now, it's hip hop and piano lesson for me. My urchins aren't aware, but I so want to be in that hip hop class. Shhh.....don't tell. For me, waiting = stitching. Hand stitching on black cotton using DMC threads. The stitching began back in 2006 after taking Dorothy Caldwell's workshop at Peter's Valley Craft Center and continues. The first finished piece became the covers for cards. The next 2 pieces are in the studio...waiting for me to decide what the next step is in their journey. I played with their perspectives, mine really, not long ago by laying a mat atop them to see what effect cropping would have. This latest piece was completed on the flight home from Jamaica. It measures 43" x 13" and was started back in the fall with the beginning of hip hop and piano lessons after school. I stand back and think that the whole is wonderful, but it's when I move in closer, get a bit more intimate with it that sections sing and beg me to single them out. Still...I'm just not sure what to do with pieces. What would you do?
El otro día mami de Cose y Calla nos mostraba un monedero hecho con las técnicas japonesas Boro de costura y Sashiko de bordado. Podéis verlo aquí El Boro es unir trocitos de tela a modo de parches, antiguamente los campesinos japoneses lo hacían para remendar sus ropas y con el bordado Sashiko, unían los trocitos de tela a la pieza en cuestión. Más o menos esta es la idea. A mí me encantó nada más verlo, no lo conocía y me puse a montar mis trocitos de tela. Me llevó tres tardes hacer el puzzle... ni idea de como mezclar los colores y ella me dijo que eligiera las telas que me gustasen y listo. Bueno, me lancé y lo llené de puntadas Sashiko, me encantan estas puntadas y los trocitos de tela de distintos tamaños colocados más o menos... Todavía no he podido acabar mi monedero (gripe y más gripe), iba a ser un bolsito, pero las prisas me pueden y decidí hacer un monedero, en cuanto lo tenga os lo subo. Coloqué los trocitos de tela sobre una tela de algodón y debajo le puse guata. Lo hilvané y empecé a darle puntadas, en mi caso con hilo de algodón de bordar nº 12 Lo bueno de esto, es que se aprovechan los trocitos más pequeños que nos sobran. Sólo deciros, que como siempre yo lo adapto todo a mí y desconozco las técnicas formales de ambas cosas. No he seguido ningún tutorial, de como hay que hacerlo. Me emocioné y le hice un montón de puntadas.... lo llené!!! . Como véis al final es cuadrado, al principio la boquilla del bolso era redonda pero al decidir que sería un monedero le añadí unos trocitos para hacerlo cuadrado, ya que la boquilla es así. En cuanto lo tenga listo, lo subo y desde luego, voy a repetir. Gracias por venir y que tengáis buenas vacaciones de Semana Santa.

I'm sure many of you by now are on Pinterest. If not, you need to be. It's become such a great way to organize my favorite images on the internet. What I like even more is that it links the image back to the original site to give credit where credit is due (something that's been in the news lately online). I have just today been plunged into another new love: Boro. Not glass.... but Japanese cloth. "Boro was born of forgotten values of ‘mottainai’ or ‘too good to waste’. Boro is the clothing that was worn by peasants, merchants or artisans in Japan from Edo up to early Showa (17th – early 19th century). In feudal times, the majority were peasant farmers. Not everyone could afford the lavish silk kimono and vivid obi worn by the aristocracy. Clothes were crafted from cheaper materials, but were no less beautiful than those worn by the upper classes. Literally translated as rags or scraps of cloth, the term boro is also used to describe clothes and household items which have been patched-up and repaired many times." Delicious. Now I know what I will do with all the clothes I've saved that were either stained or torn, but I just couldn't bare to part with. ...Well, when I find the time!

Oh my... Hard to believe it's been over two weeks since I last posted on this blog..where did the time go? Here's a random update: We went back to beautiful Truro for last week end: I think it's my favorite time of the year to go there, there's hardly anybody and the light and colors are beautiful. The weather was so gorgeous we were even able to do some kayaking on the Pamet. Lovely.. I finished a group of bags and smaller leather accessories to bring to the beautiful Michelle Willey store in the South End: This group is made using reclaimed upholstery leather - super soft! In my continuing search for German artists, I found this beautiful painting by Ulriche Panhorst (b. 1965 in Germany, lives in Holland) on Art Propelled: Found via ArtPropelled: Ulrike Panhorst; “no 325 watcher and watched It reminds me of Cy Twombly. One of my favorite things about early French life is how the women would repair a textile over and over again, giving it a whole new life... The French would mend or patch a cloth until there was more mending than original piece. A really well-mended quilt might end up looking like a haphazard patchwork quilt. No more of the original fabric to mend the quilt? - no problem, just use Pierre's butcher apron. No thread to match the original weave? - don't worry about it, just use what happens to be threaded in the needle. The more primitive the better, if you ask me. Now when I find myself digging through old textiles, I am looking for a patch or a repair, something that shows me that the piece was used to death - a small clue into the past life of the cloth. If it is a beautiful, fine reweaving of the original cloth, I think maybe the woman went to convent schools and was taught by the nuns. If the repair is rough and simple, I wonder if it was a young girl in charge of the textile repairs for her home. The amount of time and energy they put in to salvaging their household textiles is staggering - but if you figure they may have only had one quilt, two torchons and a single sheet (for life) - I guess they had no other option than to live by the golden rule, make do and mend.

EEN HELEBOEL STIKSTEEKJES... Een lekker ontspannen werkje... honderden stiksteekjes! Ik heb dubbele stof gebruikt met een laagje fiberfill ertussen. De achterzijde van de onderzetters is een ander stofje dan de voorzijde. Het formaat van de onderzetters is 10cmx10cm.
