DESCRIPTION Bower is an oversized, open-front, drop-shoulder layering piece featuring foldover lapels adorned with mirrored traveling cables. Hidden inset pockets sit beneath the cable panels, and the lapels are joined to the hem with an I-cord Three-Needle Bind Off to create additional handwarmer pockets. The rest of the sweater is simple stockinette and rib, keeping the piece light in weight and maintaining focus on the bold cabled panels. WILD ALMOND Wild Almond is a top-down yoked cardigan with options for either a hip-length or cropped body and a choice of bracelet length or three-quarter sleeves. Please see end of notes for a full description of the construction and techniques used. This design allows you to take a relatively small amount of precious yarn and turn it into an entire garment. The silhouette evokes the sweaters of past eras with defined waist shaping, slightly blouson sleeves and dainty lace detailing. Created for Edinburgh Yarn Festival 2018 MARUTA was designed for mYak’s first appearance at the Edinburgh Yarn Festival. I wanted to create something to showcase the beautiful new colors of natural dyed-cashmere and at the same time link the design to Scotland, a place for which I have a deep love. My mother’s family is from Great Britain and my great-grandmother’s last name was Graham so I used blue and green as a nod to the colors of the Graham tartan. But it just so happens that my ancestors come from two places with splendid knitting traditions and once I thought of one I quickly thought of the other. My father’s father came from Latvia, so the patterning was derived from Latvian mitten motifs and the name of the pattern is a Latvian woman’s name that I’ve always loved the sound of. This hat celebrates my own heritage as well as the extraordinary position contemporary knitters find themselves in; to be able to pick and choose from the most beautiful of the world’s textile traditions and to work with the most exquisite fibers. If you plan to try your sweater on in progress to check the fit it is advisable to knit several inches of the yoke then put the collar on before continuing, as the structure it provides will show more accurately where the finished sweater will sit on your body. • Please be aware that the pattern fit is tailored specifically for this yarn which is very drapey and elastic. It clings to the body and requires more fabric in the sleeves in order not to fit too tightly there. If you are substituting a yarn with more structure, you made wish to pick up less stitches for the sleeves. • In order to check your fit as you work, the following order is recommended: Work the yoke to the end of the colorwork section then put on hold; next work the collar and then one sleeve. Block the piece. Try the sweater on and adjust the sleeve length as needed. You can now complete the second sleeve and body being confident that the sweater is sitting where it is meant to when the sleeves are attached and the garmet has been washed.
Nuala is a yoke sweater knit seamlessly in the round from the bottom up. The fit is tailored but relaxed with an elegantly sloped neckline. Nuala is a name derived from Irish mythology and is possibly a diminutive of Fionnuala, meaning “fair shoulder” or an alternate name for Úna, which perhaps means “lamb”. Either way it seems an appropriate name for a shoulder-focused piece of knitwear. A note on yarn substitution: The sample is shown in a 50/50 blend of new and recycled cashmere that knits up at 22 sts over 4” on a size 7 needle. Any yarn that yields the same gauge can be used so both DK and worsted weights might be acceptable substitutes, however the original yarn has both excellent bloom and drape so those are qualities to look for when substituting. Lady Yak is intended as a sleek, modern wardrobe essential. It features a long, lean silhouette, a flattering ribbed detail at the side seams and a wide-set, asymmetrical fold-over collar that frames the face and neck. The pattern also features full-fashioned shoulder shaping and the collar is attached separately after the sweater is assembled using a backstitch (see tutorial information below). Although it can be knit in any worsted weigh yarn, the simplicity of the design is the perfect showcase for luxurious fibers with drape or halo.
