Rudolf Schlichter 1890-1955 München Helene Weigel 1928 München Lenbachhaus Peintre réaliste, "la nouvelle objectivité" Realistic painter, "the new objectivity" UNE PETITE HISTOIRE DE LA PEINTURE EUROPÉENNE (2) L'Art de tous les temps et dans toutes les civilisations s'est décidé en haut des hiérarchies sociales et a été le reflet des volontés des élites politiques et idéologiques du temps. L'art de tous les temps et dans toutes les sociétés est un moyen pour les élites d'imposer une religion (sacrée) ou une idéologie (profane, laïque). L'art est donc un intéressant révélateur de la pensée philosophique et morale qui inspire les élites d'une société donnée en un temps donné. Ces religions ou idéologies peuvent différer beaucoup quant au bénéfice que les peuples vont, ou non, en retirer. Certaines sont propices à l'établissement de civilisations au long cours (Égypte ancienne, Antiquité gréco-romaine, Christianisme, Hindouisme, Bouddhisme, Islam....) d'autres sont plus ou moins rapidement mortelles ( Religions Aztèque et Inca, Communisme, National-Socialisme). En effet certaines idéologies, sacrées ou profanes, conçues par les élites, ont été, à plus ou moins court terme, acceptées et totalement partagées par les peuples qui y ont adhéré sans réticence. Elles peuvent alors s'imposer totalement sans heurter les sentiments et les libertés des populations, ou tout au moins d'une majorité largement significative, voire faire l'unanimité à l'intérieur de leur société durant une longue période de temps. D'autres idéologies par contre ont été imposées par les élites, mais n'ont pas suscité l'adhésion unanime ou majoritaire des peuples qui sont entrés en résistance, passive ou active avec plus ou moins de succès au bout d'une période plus ou moins longue. 1° La peinture européenne, du 5è siècle au 15è siècle, est totalement inspirée par les thèmes religieux dictés par le catholicisme et l'orthodoxie. Les racines de l'Europe sont donc bien, non pas seulement chrétiennes, mais pendant un millénaire, catholiques et orthodoxes. C'est un fait qui déplait à beaucoup d' Idéologues et de politiques contemporains, surtout en France. Certes ces racines disparaissent, c'est un fait aussi, et les Grands Influents du mondialisme font tout pour que les peuples européens perdent jusqu'au souvenir de leurs racines. Cette volonté de destruction du passé culturel, est un peu moins caractéristique de la société américaine où les idéologies religieuses, celles chrétiennes notamment, restent très influentes, en tout cas au niveau populaire et des classes moyennes. 2° A la fin du 15è siècle en Europe, plus particulièrement en provenance de l'Italie, des nouveaux thèmes apparaissent, dans l'art (architecture, peinture et sculpture) : ils sont inspirés par l'Antiquité Grecque et Romaine. Ces autres racines de la civilisation européenne, plus anciennes, ont été quelque peu occultées pendant la période médiévale par une interprétation très orientée par la théologie et la philosophie catholique. Ce passé culturel est aussi en voie de totale disparition à notre époque en Europe, il ne concerne plus que quelques spécialistes. Au 16è siècle, en Europe de l'Ouest, les influents mécènes de l'art ne sont plus seulement des hommes d'Eglise, ils viennent de plus en plus de l'aristocratie guerrière, foncière, et de la ploutocratie marchande qui a acquis beaucoup d'influence notamment en Italie et en Allemagne du Danube et du Rhin. C'est la naissance de l'Art Humaniste. Cet art humaniste n'entre pas en conflit avec l'art d'inspiration catholique. Il ne le supplante pas, il s'ajoute à l'art religieux. La religion, catholique et orthodoxe, et l'Antiquité (Mythologie et Histoire) vont coexister en bonne intelligence pendant quatre siècles. L'art du portrait est un bon indicateur de l' évolution humaniste : il devient un genre en lui même, indépendant. Les donateurs ne sont plus seulement de petits personnages tout en bas d'un tableau à thème religieux. Les mécènes s'étaient déjà installés sur les volets des retables au cours de la période gothique tardive, ils sont maintenant le sujet unique du tableau. L'art du portrait est donc un bon révélateur de l'importance que l'homme s'attribue de plus en plus dans sa représentation du monde, au détriment du divin. 3° Au 17è siècle, une petite révolution idéologique s'est produite en Europe, essentiellement dans les régions situées au delà des frontières de l'Empire Romain : La Réforme. Pour des raisons diverses cette révolution a pris dans les Pays Bas du Nord un développement plus particulier qui a eu des conséquences sociales, morales et esthétiques importantes. La Réforme modifie de manière importante et déterminante pour l'avenir, à plus ou moins longue échéance, l'art de la peinture en Europe : a) La Réforme c'est un recul considérable des deux sources principales et même presque exclusives d'inspiration de la peinture européenne jusqu'alors : La religion et l'histoire et la mythologie de l'Antiquité greco-romaine. La Réforme fait se développer considérablement, aux Pays Bas du Nord, un art profane, laïque, séculier, entièrement occupé par la société contemporaine. Les spécialistes ont parlé d'art naturaliste. Il peut aussi être qualifié d'art réaliste ou matérialiste. Les grands thèmes religieux du catholicisme sont remplacés le plus souvent, sauf exceptions comme Rembrandt, par des natures mortes très indirectement critiques des vanités de la vie terrestre. Les grands thèmes mythologiques et cosmogoniques de la civilisation gréco-romaine sont en recul évident. b) Une autre évolution très significative de la peinture européenne se fait jour aux Pays Bas protestants au 17è siècle. Cette évolution, qui va se répandre au cours des siècles suivants dans toute l'Europe, se manifeste par le passage d'une peinture spiritualiste, dont le discours est de tendance métaphysique, surnaturelle, spéculative, essentielle et symbolique, à une peinture matérialiste dont le discours est de tendance concrète, réaliste, existentielle, positiviste et utilitariste. Les Pays Bas du 17è siècle, "le siècle d'Or", c'est ainsi : - L’épanouissement de la peinture de paysage, qui est peint seul, pour lui même, sans prétexte religieux ou mythologique. La vache néerlandaise est seulement une vache qui paisse ou pisse dans un pré. Elle n'est pas Io métamorphosée par Zeus, poursuivie par la jalousie d'Héra (Junon). Le Taureau néerlandais est un animal, il n'est pas Zeus métamorphosé pour enlever Europe; Il n'est pas non plus le bœuf symbolique des Nativités. L'âne néerlandais ne fuit pas en Égypte. Il reste attaché à la porte de l'auberge où son maître se désaltère. L'Océan, calme ou agité, n'est pas le lieu de naissance d'Aphrodite-Vénus ou le domaine de Poséidon, d'Amphitrite et de leurs naïades. Sur l'océan néerlandais flottent seulement des bateaux de pêche, de commerce ou de guerre. - L'apparition de la peinture de mœurs, de genre, descriptive de la société quotidienne. Non seulement dans les milieux aristocratiques, mais aussi, nouveauté importante, dans les milieux bourgeois, artisanaux et paysans. La femme n'est plus une déesse, juste une mère qui peigne sa fille. - Le développement du portrait, déjà apparu au sud de l'Europe au 16è siècle, mais qui aux Pays Bas ne concerne plus seulement l'aristocratie, mais aussi les classes moyennes. - La naissance de la "Nature morte" en tant que thème totalement indépendant. Peinture des objets, des animaux, des fleurs. Une peinture qui peut prendre un ton moraliste avec les "Vanités" mais dont les tendances très matérialistes sont flagrantes dans la profusion des scènes de marché et des banquets, la fréquence de la représentation des cuisines, de leur personnel et de leurs ustensiles, les buffets garnis et les "déjeuners". Pendant tout le 17è et encore au 18è cette peinture matérialiste, naturaliste, du présent, reste principalement limitée aux Pays Bas. Les autres pays d'Europe continuent dans la voie ouverte par l'Art Humaniste et les thèmes principaux de la peinture demeurent, tout au long du 17è et encore au 18è siècle, la religion et l'Antiquité. Rares sont en France, en Allemagne, en Italie en Espagne, en Grande Bretagne les peintres influents totalement spécialisés dans le paysage, la nature morte ou la peinture de moeurs. Il en existe, mais ils restent une minorité. La peinture de paysage demeure principalement liée aux grands sujet religieux, mythologiques ou historiques. La nature morte est de même bien moins développée qu'aux Pays Bas. Le portrait reste l'apanage des classes aristocratiques ou des grands bourgeois. 4° Le 19è siècle et le début du 20è siècle voient la peinture européenne se diversifier de manière presque explosive. C'est une époque extraordinairement plurielle pour l'art européen. Une époque de libertés, souvent affrontées, conflictuelles, situation qui est une conséquence de la grande diversité idéologique que connaît cette période. Les thèmes les plus divers sont traités partout en Europe: La peinture de la société et des paysages contemporains dominent. Les motifs religieux et mythologiques sont certes en recul, mais ils restent très présents. Les thèmes historiques et littéraires se maintiennent bien. Les techniques de la peinture européenne se diversifient et se renouvellent. C'est une floraison de techniques nouvelles ou réinventées du passé : l'esquisse, le tachisme, la peinture plate sans perspective ni volumes, le dessin cerné, cloisonné des époques romane et gothique. En fin de période apparaît une nouveauté totale, intéressante : l'Art Abstrait. La Période de l'Art Moderne (1815-1950 environ) a été une grande période de recherche de nouvelles esthétiques. A la poursuite d'un art dont la beauté serait différente de celle qui a dominé la peinture européenne depuis la fin du gothique et la renaissance. Cette recherche s'est d'ailleurs souvent inspirée de procédés et de techniques anciennes, empruntées à l'art Byzantin, Paléo chrétien, roman ou du premier gothique. Pendant toute la période de l'Art Moderne un certain équilibre entre le discours spiritualiste, symbolique, métaphysique et le discours matérialiste, réaliste, positiviste demeure sauvegardé dans l'art de la peinture et de la sculpture. Cette diversité des thèmes et des technique va totalement disparaître après les années 1950, tout au moins dans l'art contemporain officiel, celui des musées. Avec l'Art Contemporain Officiel qui succède à l'Art Moderne, vers 1950, l'Occident rejette toute esthétique et toute métaphysique. C'est une rupture totale dans l'histoire de l'art européen. 5° Dans les années 1950 et suivantes s'impose, dans les musées occidentaux, ce qui a été appelé l'Art Contemporain. L'Art Contemporain Officiel, car il est principalement visible dans les musées qui portent son nom. C'est un art imposé par la nouvelle idéologie mondialiste qui tend à dominer totalement l'Occident depuis la fin de la seconde guerre mondiale et qui est un développement des doctrines des "Lumières" apparues au cours du 18è siècle. L'art contemporain officiel est un anti-art, sur commande, mondialiste, étatique et supra-étatique, public et privé, qui combine sept constantes que l'on retrouve dans presque tous les musées européens: Il est laid, absurde, provocateur, bâclé, triste, déraciné, obsessionnel, et comme conséquence de tout cela, totalement artificiel. C'est un art de la Table Rase du Passé, un art totalement matérialiste, sans aucunes racines culturelles. A voir les oeuvres d'art exposées dans les Musées d'Art Contemporain le but des élites mondialistes est très clair : acculturer les hommes, uniformiser les peuples du monde pour mieux les dominer. L'histoire de l'art européen contient un premier enseignement qui tient en un constat de fait, et un jugement : 1° De - 500 à + 1950 l'art européen en peinture et en sculpture s'est voulu beau et dans son ensemble a été beau. 2° A partir de la deuxième moitié du 20è siècle l'art européen, devenu l'art occidental, l'art officiel, celui des élites idéologiques et politiques, a rejeté la finalité du beau. L'Art Contemporain officiel se veut laid. Une anti esthétique, revendiquée comme telle. Cet Anti-Art, imposé par les élites contre les sentiments des populations est une caractéristique de notre temps en Occident. Ce sont des faits. Il est possible de les nier, et de construire un "réel idéologique", une réalité inventée, c'est à dire fabriquée pour être conforme aux croyances actuelles. Mais ce sont des faits quand même. 3° l'Art Contemporain Officiel, laid, est un signe de décadence, de destruction, de mort. Car tout est lié, le Beau, le Bien, le Vrai. C'est un jugement, une opinion, qu'il est possible de ne pas partager. L'histoire de l'art européen contient un second enseignement : il montre une évolution qui part d'un art spiritualiste, pour aboutir à un art matérialiste. Second constat en effet : l'Anti- Art Contemporain Officiel est totalement, tristement matérialiste, il est dépourvu de tout idéal et de toute transcendance. Il n'a pas d'âme. C'est une brocante triviale qui constitue un étalage de présent, omniprésent, totalement coupé de tout environnement culturel, spatial, temporel : Des toiles unies, colorées ou pas, des lignes, des points, des traits et des cercles, des carrés, des rectangles, et bien sûr des taches, surtout des taches. Des gravats, des tuyaux, des balais, des serpillières, des échelles, des lits, des chaises et tables bancales, des entassements de choses diverses : charbon, pierre, cartons, papiers, plastiques. Des poutrelles rouillées, tordues, cassées, des cartons assemblés, des vêtements et chiffons entassés, des boites ouvertes ou fermées, des machineries cassées ou concassées, des tubulures, poutres de ciment, moellons, parpaings, tuiles, briques entières ou pulvérisées, des tubes de néon, des sacs vides ou des sacs pleins, toutes les sortes de tuyaux (fer, ciment, plastiques), du caoutchouc, des seaux, brocs, pots; des palissades, des téléphones, des machines à écrire emballées ou pas, des éviers, des urinoirs, des vélos, des fruits et légumes... tout un super-marché. Mais les prix ne sont pas affichés, ils sont secret d'état. Il est vrai que cet art n'est pas destiné à la consommation populaire. C'est un art réservé à une élite. Le discours de l'Art Contemporain Officiel totalement provocateur et absurde, ne contient plus aucune référence spirituelle, métaphysique ou symbolique. Il n'a plus rien du spiritualisme de la peinture gothique et orthodoxe Il n'a plus rien non plus du spiritualisme associé à l'humanisme de la Renaissance. il n'a plus rien non plus du matérialisme corrigé par la foi protestante, du réalisme positiviste et du naturalisme empathique de la peinture des Pays Bas du 17è siècle. Il n'a rien de l'explosion de diversité tout à la fois spiritualiste et matérialiste, ni de l'optimisme de l'art moderne. Le portrait ? Il n'y a plus de portrait dans l'art contemporain officiel, ou alors il est totalement hideux. Une désespérance dans l'homme qui ne s'avoue pas ? A SHORT HISTORY OF EUROPEAN PAINTING (2) The Art of all times and in all civilisations was decided at the top of social hierarchies and reflected the wishes of the political and ideological elites of the time. Art of all times and in all societies is a means for elites to impose a religion (sacred) or a ideology (secular, profane). Art is therefore an interesting revealer of the philosophical and moral thought that inspires the elites of a given society at a given time. These religions or ideologies may differ greatly in terms of the benefit that peoples will or will not derive from them. Some are conducive to the establishment of civilizations in the long term (Ancient Egypt, Greek-Roman Antiquity, Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam...) others are more or less rapidly deadly (Aztec and Inca Religions, Communism, National Socialism). Indeed, certain ideologies, sacred or profane, conceived by the elites, have been, in the more or less short term, accepted and totally shared by the peoples who have embraced them without reticence. They can then impose themselves totally without offending people's feelings and freedoms, or at least for a largely significant majority, or even for unanimity within their society for a long period of time. Other ideologies, on the other hand, were imposed by the elites, but did not enjoy the unanimous or majority support of the peoples who entered into resistance, passive or active with more or less success after a more or less long period. 1° European painting, from the 5th to the 15th century, was totally inspired by religious themes dictated by Catholicism and Orthodoxy. Europe's roots are therefore not only Christian, but during a millennium, Catholic and Orthodox. This is a fact that displeases many ideologists and contemporary politicians, especially in France. Of course, these roots are disappearing, that is also a fact, and the great Influencers of globalisation are doing everything they can to ensure that the peoples of Europe lose the memory of their roots. This willingness to destroy the cultural past is a little less characteristic of American society, where religious ideologies, particularly Christian ones, remain very influential, at least at the popular and middle class level. 2° At the end of the 15th century in Europe, more particularly from Italy, new themes appeared in art (architecture, painting and sculpture): they were inspired by Greek and Roman antiquity. These other roots of European civilization, which are older, were somewhat obscured during the medieval period by an interpretation very oriented by Catholic theology and philosophy. This cultural past is also in the process of disappearing completely in our time in Europe, it only concerns a few specialists. In the 16th century, in Western Europe, the influential patrons of art were no longer just men of the Church, they came more and more from the warrior aristocracy, the landed aristocracy and the merchant plutocracy, which had acquired a great deal of influence, particularly in Italy and Germany in the Danube and the Rhine. It is the birth of Humanist Art. This humanistic art does not conflict with Catholic-inspired art. He does not supplant it, it adds himself to religious art. The Religion, Catholic and Orthodox, and the Antiquity (Mythology and History) coexisted in harmony for four centuries. The art of portraiture is a good indicator of humanist evolution: it becomes a genre in itself, independent. Donors are no longer just small characters at the bottom of a religious themed painting. The patrons had already settled on the altarpieces during the late Gothic period, they are now the only subject of the painting. The art of portraiture is therefore a good revealer of the importance that man attributes to himself more and more in his representation of the world, to the detriment of the divine. 3° In the 17th century, a small ideological revolution occurred in Europe, mainly in regions beyond the borders of the Roman Empire: the Reformation. For various reasons, this revolution has taken on a more particular development in the Northern Netherlands, which has had significant social, moral and aesthetic consequences. The Reformation significantly and decisively changes the art of painting in Europe in the future, in the more or less long term: a) The Reformation is a considerable setback from the two main and even almost exclusive sources of inspiration for European painting until then: Religion and the history and mythology of Greek-Roman antiquity. The Reformation led to the considerable development in the North Netherlands of a layman, secular and profane art that was entirely occupied by contemporary society. Specialists have spoken of naturalistic art. It can also be described as a realistic or materialistic art. The major religious themes of Catholicism are most often replaced, with exceptions such in Rembrandt, by still lifes that are very indirectly critical of the vanities of earthly life. The great mythological and cosmogonic themes of the Greco-Roman civilization are in obvious decline. b) Another very significant evolution of European painting occurred in the 17th century in the Protestant Netherlands. This evolution, which would spread throughout Europe in the following centuries, was manifested by the passage from a spiritualist painting, whose discourse was metaphysical, supernatural, speculative, essential and symbolic, to a materialist painting whose discourse was concrete, realistic, existential, positivist and utilitarian. The Netherlands of the 17th century, "the Golden Age", it is: - The blossoming of landscape painting, which is painted alone, for itself, without any religious or mythological pretext. The Dutch cow is only a cow that ruminates or pisses in a meadow. It is not Io metamorphosed by Zeus, pursued by the jealousy of Hera (Juno). The Dutch Bull is an animal, it is not Zeus metamorphosed himself to take Europe away; nor is it the symbolic ox of the Nativity. The Dutch donkey does not flee to Egypt. He remains attached to the door of the inn where his master quenches his thirst. The Ocean, calm or agitated, is not the birthplace of Aphrodite Venus or the domain of Poseidon, Amphitrite and their naiads. On the Dutch ocean only fishing, commercial or warships float. - The appearance of the painting of mores, of gender, descriptive of everyday society. Not only in aristocratic circles, but also, and this is an important innovation, in bourgeois, artisanal and peasant circles. The woman is no longer a goddess, just a mother combing her daughter. - The development of the portrait, which already appeared in southern Europe in the 16th century, but which in the Netherlands no longer concerns only the aristocracy, but also the middle classes. - the birth of still-life as a totally independent theme. Painting objects, animals, flowers. A painting that can take a moralist tone with the "Vanities" but whose very materialistic tendencies are obvious in the profusion of market scenes and banquets, the frequency of the representation of kitchens, their staff and utensils, the buffets filled and the "lunches". Throughout the 17th and again in the 18th century this materialistic, naturalistic painting, from the present, remained mainly limited to the Netherlands. The other countries of Europe continued along the path opened by Humanist Art and the main themes of painting remained, throughout the 17th and again in the 18th century, the religion and the antiquity. Few influential painters in France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Great Britain are totally specialized in landscape, still life or mores painting. There are some, but they are still a minority. Landscape painting remains mainly related to major religious, mythological or historical subjects. Still life is also much less developed than in the Netherlands. The portrait remains the prerogative of the aristocratic classes or the great bourgeoisie. 4° The 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century saw European painting diversify in an almost explosive way. This is an extraordinarily plural era for European art. An era of freedoms, often confronted, conflictual, a situation that is a consequence of the great ideological diversity that this period has experienced. The most diverse themes are dealt with all over Europe: Painting of society and contemporary landscapes dominate. Religious and mythological motives are certainly in decline, but they remain very present. The historical and literary themes are well maintained. The techniques of European painting are diversifying and renewing themselves. It is a flowering of new or reinvented techniques from the past: sketching, tachism, flat painting without perspective or volumes, surrounded drawing, partitioned of the Romanesque and Gothic periods. At the end of the period, a total and interesting novelty appears: Abstract Art. The Modern Art Period (about 1815-1950) was a great period of research into new aesthetics. In pursuit of an art whose beauty would be different from the one that has dominated European painting since the end of the Gothic and the Renaissance. This research has often been inspired by ancient processes and techniques, borrowed from Byzantine, Palaeo-Christian, Romanesque or early Gothic art. Throughout the Modern Art period, a certain balance between the spiritualist, symbolic, metaphysical and the materialist, realistic and positivist discourse remains preserved in the art of painting and sculpture. This diversity of themes and techniques disappeared completely after the 1950s, at least in official contemporary art, that of museums. With the Official Contemporary Art that succeeded Modern Art, around 1950, the West rejected all aesthetics and all metaphysics. It is a complete break in the history of European art. 5° In the 1950s and following years, what has been called Contemporary Art became established in Western museums. Official Contemporary Art, because it is mainly visible in the museums that bear his name. It is an art imposed by the new globalist ideology that has tended to totally dominate the West since the end of the Second World War and is a development of the doctrines of the "Lights" that appeared during the 18th century. Official contemporary art is an anti-art, commissioned, globalist, state and supra-state, public and private, which combines seven constants found in almost all European museums: He is ugly, absurd, provocative, botched, sad, uprooted, obsessive, and as a consequence of all this, totally artificial. It is an art that makes a clean slate of the past, a totally materialistic art, without any cultural roots. Seeing the works of art exhibited in the Museums of Contemporary Art, the goal of the world's elite is very clear: to acculturate men, to standardise the peoples of the world in order to better dominate them. The history of European art contains a first teaching that is a factual observation and a judgment: 1° From - 500 to + 1950 the European art in painting and sculpture was meant to be beautiful and as a whole was beautiful. 2° From the second half of the 20th century onwards, European art, which had become Western art, official art, that of the ideological and political elites, rejected the purpose of beauty. The official Contemporary Art is intended to be ugly. An anti-aesthetic, claimed as such. This Anti-Art, imposed by the elites against the feelings of the populations, is a characteristic of our time in the West. These are facts. It is possible to deny them, and to build an "ideological reality", an invented reality, i.e. one that is manufactured to conform to current beliefs. But these are facts anyway. 3° Official Contemporary Art, ugly, is a sign of decadence, destruction, death. Because everything is linked, the Beautiful, the Good, the True, it is a judgment, an opinion, that it is possible not to share. The history of European art contains a second teaching: She shows an evolution from a spiritualist art to a materialist art. Second observation indeed: the Official Anti-Contemporary Art is totally, sadly materialistic, it is devoid of any ideal and any transcendence. He has no soul. It is a trivial flea market that constitutes a display of the present, omnipresent, totally cut off from any cultural, spatial or temporal environment: plain canvases, coloured or not, lines, dots, lines and circles, squares, rectangles, and of course stains, especially stains. Rubble, pipes, broomsticks, mops, ladders, beds, chairs and wobbly tables, piles of various things: coal, stone, cardboard, paper, plastics. Rusty, twisted, broken, bent, assembled cardboard joists, stacked clothing and rags, open or closed boxes, broken or crushed machinery, pipes, cement beams, rubble, cinder blocks, tiles, whole or pulverized bricks, neon tubes, empty bags or full bags, all kinds of pipes (iron, cement, plastic), rubber, buckets, brocs, pots; fences, telephones, typewriters, packaged or unpacked, sinks, urinals, bicycles, fruits and vegetables.... a whole supermarket. At the age of 26, while he had been pursuing his studies at the Art Academy of Kunstakademie in Karlsruhe, German artist Rudolf Schlichter was drafted into the army. Following a successful hunger strike, Schlichter was dismissed from his duties and returned to the bustling, forward-thinking town of Karlsruhe. Schlichter didn’t stick around for long and soon set off for Berlin where he fell in with the Dada scene and became a communist. Schlichter made a successful living in Berlin from his illustrations. He transitioned from Dada to the “Neue Saclichkeit” movement (or “New Objectivity”) that used realism to express skepticism related to current events. He quickly became one of the most influential and critically important contributors to this quasi-Expressionism. Within New Objectivity there were two additional artistic courses: The “Verists” were known for using portraiture as a vehicle for their hostility toward authority figures, affluence and the oppression of society. The works of the great Otto Dix played a large role in this sub-component of New Objectivity.
