From the day she first watched the movie Tangled (after confusingly meeting Rapunzel at Disney World before she knew who she was), my daughter’s one wish for her birthday was to ‘see the floating lights, just for 24 hours.’ No pressure, right? My daughter’s birth was the single best and worst day of my life. ...

Throw a carnival party for kids, complete with circus-themed decorations, invitations, and carnival games.
OMG. I'm sooo tired. Exhausted. But at least, it's over! All the big rush is OVER! It was my man's birthday the last week of august, the back-to-school for my big girl (she just started kindergarten), her birthday (a family supper last weekend, her real birthday on friday and the kids birthday party yesterday) and on top of that, she had a big allergic reaction on thursday at school, she got bite by a mosquito on her cheek and it got so puffy and swollen, the school got scared and called me. I had to go to the doctor rush rush that evening to get a prescription for EPIPEN and for Benadryl so they can have the authority to do the administration of the medecine in case it happens again. But now she's ok :) It was a crazy 2 weeks to be honest. It was really hard to deal with all the new routine, on top of all the birthdays. Now it's OVER and I can BREATHE! I was really proud of all the stuff I did for my daughter's 5th birthday party! It took a lot of time, but I was really happy with the result! Same with my daughters! A lot of DIY (thanks Pinterest) but wow it was worth it! And a big big thank you to my friend Genevieve who helped me a lot to do the decorations :) Here's a few pictures ! CREEPER TOSS This one is my favorite DIY project! I saw it on Pinterest, I found it was really cool! I also created those little pockets with red and white felt, rice, glue gun and a black Sharpie. The green panel I bought it at Michael's for like 8$ CDN, it was already folded like that. BALLOONS : I did also a lot of balloons ... I used colored balloons, differents ducktape colors (bought at Michael's, pretty expensive to be honest, it was like 7 or 8$ per roll... I had to buy 3! I also bought some crepe streamers for the arms for about 1-2$ per roll (used that also for other stuffs!) Here's Reuben the pig and an Enderman : Here's a CREEPER GASP My favorite one, a Mooshroom ! The Spider (and a little black cardboard with ducktape for the eyes, just for a little Enderman face) GIFT BAGS For the gift bags, I bought/made : - See through gift bags at Walmart (2$ for the pack), - 7 boxes Minecraft Blind Box Serie 3 at Toys r Us for about 4$ each, - 7 Hershey's chocolate bar at the dollar store and I printed some Chocolate Bar Wrapper here. Just had to glue them on the chocolate bar! The kids were so excited to eat Minecraft Chocolate Bar ;) - Minecraft Bookmarks that I printed here. I bought some crafting stuff to do the strings for 2$ at Walmart. - "Thank You For Coming" paper that I got here So it came up max 5-6$ per bag, thats pretty good I find. Previous birthdays I was going to the dollar store, but it always end up costing at least 10$ per bag in order to have something decent. The kids seems really happy ! The food table I had so much fun doing this! I had a hard time finding some nice FREE printable food labels.. They were either expensive, of just not really nice... I could have done them myself, but I didn't had the time to do it this time. I found some really nice one on another Blog (Fiveinsix). She made them herself and shared them on her blog, so thank you very much! I made 2-3 myself for the one that was missing.. The only thing I didn't do, it's the cupcakes and the cake. I have zero talent so thank you very much to Christine-et-gourmantines.com for those nice goodies :) I bought all the things at Bulk Barn and the grocery store. The diamond sword were really popular! For the grass, my mom made some brownies with chocolate frosting with food coloring. NETHER PORTAL I think this one was the more popular with the kids. It was super easy and cheap to do! I got the idea from Pinterest, I just bought 2 different purple crepe streamers and a black one, and I used construction paper for the NETHER banner. Happy Birthday Banner I also found a nice free printable banner here. I printed the letters, cut them and glue them on a thin cardboard (the paper where rolling up, so I had to find something more strong) and I used some green rope and a glue gun to fix the banner. Pretty simple! OTHER DECORATIONS I also put other regular decorations, I used a lot of crepe streamers in the Minecraft color theme. * Sorry for the bad lighting for the one on the window! ;) * And now, for the games! I had a lot of fun to do that too! Minecraft Mask I bought a big black cardboard (same one as the Creeper Toss!) and cut both side in 3 (it was making perfect squares) for a total of 6. I also bought a pack of wood sticks at Walmart (I used the glue gun to fix the stick on the back of the cardboard) *I used the middle of the cardboard to avoid any waste, to do the Enderman, the face next to the spider before* I just used a knife to do 2 holes for the eyes. I also cut a lot of little squares construction papers of differents colors and put them in differents bowls. I cut them the size for a perfect fit 8x8 like the template. I bought 6 small glue stick and a pack of wood sticks at Walmart. I made a table just for that, and it was a big hit! I printed the templates for the faces (I can't find the website, I'm sorry! But it can easily be found on google images for all the faces you want!) And for the last game... The Little Piggy! It was also a big hit !! Easy to make (just research pictures on Google Image, or just look at mine hehe!) and really fun! I used felt and glue! Super fun for the kids!

Remember that Lego birthday party we did earlier this fall? It's taken me forever to get this post together, but I couldn't not make ...
As the kids get older, cool parties are harder to come by! The best place to be inspired is in the birthday boy or girls' hobbies and interests. My creative sister recently planned a fun party for her son that I just had to share... "Carter's 12th birthday was an easy decision. He's totally into Minecraft this year and it was such an easy theme to work with. Everything in the game is pixelated, very retro video game style. So I decided to go with anything square and work from there. I was able to find some great downloads for all the blocks and character/creatures so I spent quite a bit of time cutting and folding! I think overall, they really pulled the theme together." I'd have to agree! Minecraft is all the rage these days with tweens and teens and there are lots of free resources out there to help with the details. Minecraft is a game which allows players to build anything and everything out of 3D textured cubes. Crystal did a fabulous job pulling the party together with lots of thoughtful creativity and small touches here and there. Click here for the Minecraft birthday banner. The weather was beautiful, so they took the party outside! This is a great way to expand your space when your at-home living space isn't ideal for a big gathering. There are likely all sorts of parks and greenspaces you can take advantage of in your neighborhood. One of my favorite ideas with any party is including the food as part of the theme and decor. It's an easy way to add to the theme. Crystal used the food tags to tie in the theme - notice the pictures are each made of small 3D cubes! The food itself was based on the food that the main character, Steve, eats/cooks in the game. Even the cake was the same as the one in the game! Want to create your own food labels? Look at this great font option! Here are some of those fabulous printouts that Crystal found! Every party needs a favor! Favors are not only a fun way to keep with a theme but it also extends the party for the guests! Whether is keeping the guests busy in the car or for days to come, favors are a special way to say thank you for coming. Crystal used bright green ("Creeper" colored) bags filled with a rubics cube, square wooden puzzles and green taffy. Crystal and her hubby found the taffy a few weeks before the party on a weekend away - when you're planning a party, it's never too early to start picking up small things and planning ahead. Activities are also harder to come by for older kids, but I loved the creativity of the games Crystal chose. The first game, Creeper Tag, is a Minecraft version of capture the flag. Simple instructions and will probably cause everyone to break a sweat on a warm day! The other game was Minecraft Bingo. This spin off the classic was a hit and turned out to be a highlight for Crystal. "My favorite part of the party was the Minecraft bingo. It was great to see young and old enjoying a game together. Carter's great grandmother had a blast with it, and so did Carter!" Have you thought about creating a bingo party game for your own theme? What a simple, fun idea! Thank you, Crystal, for sharing your party creativity!
Here are some highlights from my daughter's birthday party! Invitations: I made them out of old jean pockets. My mom is making a bluejean quilt, so they were readily available. I used cardstock and added a "hankie", just a cut piece of fabric, for color. I hand delivered as many as possible to cut back on postage. Main Street: I used cardboard boxes from Lowes (they'll give them to you for free, just ask) and made a Main Street. My husband thought I was crazy, but the kids loved it. All it took was paint, an exacto knife & a little imagination. The kids ran in & out of the General Store & pretended like they were in jail. Stick Horses: I was set on having stick horses (which doubled as party favors), but I could not find any ANYWHERE that we're under $20 a pop. So I made my own. To see how I made them, click HERE. I set up an obstacle course (really just 2 hay-bails) and the kids had horse races. Firepit: With a few more hay-bails, I set up a firepit, which we used to grill Smores after the sun went down. Pinata: As a finishing touch, I hung a cowboy hat pinata in the barn doorway. I know I'm biased, but it was a fun party. And with so much of the work done beforehand, getting everything ready the day of the party was a cinch. We relaxed, ate hotdogs & let the kids run wild.
From invitations and decor to party snacks and a science experiment, we're sharing step-by-step how we threw the BEST science birthday party!
Today’s a busy cooking day for me. Tomorrow night we’ve got close to 100 people coming over for a wine, cheese and appetizer party. There’s definitely a lot to do to get ready for that. One of the items on my agenda for today is chicken salad appetizer puffs. When I get ready for parties, I try to do what I can ahead of time. And then I allow myself a few items to make relatively last-minute. This is one of them. This isn’t something that can be done days or weeks in advance, but it’s still pretty easy to make and people seem to like it. It’s a two-part recipe. First you make the cream puff-style shells. Then you fill it with chicken salad. 1. “Cream puff” style shells: ½ cup butter 1 cup water 1 cup white flour ¼ tsp. salt 4 large eggs Spray 2 large baking sheets with cooking oil spray and set aside. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. In a medium saucepan, heat butter and water to a rolling boil. Add flour and salt and stir until the mixture becomes smooth and leaves the side of the pan. Remove from heat. Beat in eggs, one at a time. Beat until mixture loses its gloss. Drop dough by rounded teasponfuls onto prepared cookie sheets, allowing 2-3 inches between each spoonful of dough. Bake about 15 minutes in preheated oven until puffed and lightly browned. Remove from oven and cool away from draft. Makes about 48 to 80 appetizer-sized puffs. No more than 2-3 hours before serving, split shells in half and fill with chicken salad. Refrigerate until serving time. 2. Chicken salad filling: 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cooked and cubed 4 celery stalks, washed, dried and sliced thinly 5 eggs,hard-boiled and diced ½ cup mayonnaise 1 T. mustard ½ tsp. salt ¼ cup chopped fresh parsley Mix chicken, celery and eggs together in medium-sized bowl. In small bowl, blend mayonnaise, mustard, salt and parsley together; pour on top of chicken mixture and stir together. That’s it. This is a very simple filling, but it always tastes yummy. We’ll enjoy these chicken salad puffs tomorrow night!
Don't all things begin with a desperate need to buy themed vintage stamps from an etsy shop???? How could I ever resist? :) It's taken a while to blog Charlie's ninth birthday party because I was waiting until it was featured on Hostess with the Mostess which finally posted on the same day I flew to Boston WITHOUT my laptop! They had told me it would feature at the end of the month so I was not ready or prepared at all for a mid-June feature! And of course, I had to wait an additional five days to get home from B-town to even access my images! Crazy times! :) I started planning Charlie's party back in November. The second Henry's Monster Party wrapped, my talented party-styling girlfriend, Rachel, wanted to know what was next. We asked Charlie to give us a theme to start working on -- and he said "LEGOS!!". That didn't really work for us. There are too many lego parties already out there. It might've taken a little persuasion to get him to decide that what he reeeally wanted was a chemistry party. :) Rachel runs RV Parties with her BFF and partner, Victoria. They design the most adorable printables for pretty much any party theme. You can buy the science printables from this party as well the monster printables from Henry's party -- or a variety of many other themes - HERE at their etsy shop! You'll also see lots of my photography there. I'm their favorite professional photographer. I was seriously & intensely proud of the large chalkboard that we used for our backdrop at the dessert table. I knew two things: 1., there was NO WAY that I could handwrite anything on any chalkboard and have it look adorable - not to mention, I'm way to OCD to have the font on a backdrop not completely match with the party design/font, and 2., I did NOT want to buy a new, giant chalkboard and then have no idea what to do with it when the party wrapped. But, thats why engineering prints from Staples are the greatest thing in the whole wide world. Yes. You heard me. The greatest. If you need something printed in a very large size (this one was 36x48) but don't want to pay your child's college tuition for it - and it happens to be a black and white image - then head to Staples. I had Rachel design a large print to look like a fake chalkboard and had it printed for $6. Then I tacked it to a corkboard that I already had hanging over my desk in my office. Perfect. We had so many amazing treats on our dessert table! Miss Lulu's Sweet Treats sent us the cake pops atoms on a stick. They are the best cake pops I've ever had in my entire life. No joke. I *might* have lied to a couple of the children who asked if they could have one and said they were for display only so there'd be a few leftover. And the chocolate-dipped Oreo Molecules were her idea and I looove how creative and perfectly themed they are! And the amazing Jessica of J&J Bakeshop - local here in VA - provided us with the perfect cookies decorated to look like the element of Charlie!! She is so talented, y'all. I ordered specialty cookies from her for Christmas gifts last year and I encourage you all to find a reason to need cookies just to see what she can do! And I made the cupcakes because I'm a cupcake snob now and can only eat the cake that my BFF, Mandie, makes or the cake my BFF, Mandie, taught me how to make. I was also really proud of my party favor idea! Last summer, I taught Charlie the Mentos + Diet Soda reaction - read about it here - (so many links in this post!!). He loved it so much that I figured it should either be an experiment at the party or the favor! Since it's pretty messy and doesn't take very long to react, I figured, favor it is! I think it's always best to send the messy stuff home to the parents. Just like it's always best to serve the guests all the sugar RIGHT before the end of the party. :) Did you know that lab coats are RIDICULOUSLY expensive?? And that even the costume ones for kids to play doctor and dress up with on Halloween don't even dip below $10 each?? As much as I wanted real lab coats that I'd have embroidered with guest names for the party, that's just plain insane and I could not encourage the market to continue to charge those prices! Harumph!! Instead, I bought the 5-pack of two-sizes-too-large white undershirt tees from Target and cut them up the middle! Voila! Lab coats on the cheap! I did splurge on party color lab goggles for about $3 each. Totally worth it. So cute. And Charlie's adorable science shirt was a custom design by Ella Mella who rocks my world with their awesome kid's fashions. And Henry's shirt was sent to us from Periodically Inspired! I just love how she smooshed periodic table elements together to form geeky-chic words. Henry's my precious little GeNiUS!! And a bit of a camera ham, too! Once the house was decorated and the kids dressed, it was time to paaaaartay! An amazing woman, Calsin, runs a business of bringing science, technology, engineering and mathemathics to parties and playdates and schools, oh my! She. Is. Awesome. She told me that if she didn't have her business, she'd set up a lab in her garage and experiment anyway! I loved it. That's how I feel about my photography. If there wasn't work, there'd STILL be pictures. Her business, STEM-KIDS, is such a great concept. Learning can be a BLAST (literally!) and parties don't have to lack brain power, either! Calsin can tailor the experiments for any party. I didn't want the party to cross sciences (OCD, much?) so everything had to stay in a "chemistry" theme. Duh. And, the experiments also needed to entertain eight very active nine year olds. Calsin knew just what to do -- MESSY, hands-on chemical reactions that would result in slime, exploding "elephant toothpaste" and a giant bowl full of smoky, bubbly dry ice! EXPERIMENT #1: SLIME The kids loved this. Calsin set up a table full of the necessary ingredients and as the kids started to mix everything together, it started forming ooey-gooey slime! After they finished squishing it in their fingers, we packed up their custom-colored slime in take home bags! EXPERIMENT #2: ELEPHANT TOOTHPASTE Whats better than seeing foamy goo grow and grow and grow, so much so that it spills up and out of a bottle and into a tray for you to play with it!? NOTHING! Birthday boy was the first one to pour in the special ingredient to make the chemical reaction activate! He was SO excited!! And, um, he's also incredibly cute. EXPERIMENT #3: SUBLIMATION DEMONSTRATION I'm a creative. I photograph things. I can write fairly well. And I daydream great things. I enjoy and am awed by science but, I am no scientist. So, I have to admit that when Calsin said we'd do a "sublimation demonstration", I just blindly nodded my head like I had a clue what she was talking about. Google and Wikipedia say that sublimation is "the transition of a substance directly from the solid to the gas phase without passing through an intermediate liquid phase." So, why the dry ice turned into a smoky gas without any water sneaking in between those phases, all makes sense now. (Can you tell I was concentrating on proper exposure and focus while she was explaining all of this to the kiddos???) Oy. Adding in some dish washing liquid will create a giant bubble that will enclose the smoke inside of it and when it pops, the smoke explodes out! It's really fun and the kids obviously LOVED getting the chance to be the one to pop the bubble! And then it was time to blow out the candles and for me to cry the weepy mama-cry because my baaaaaaby is NINE!!! See the party with all our vendor info plus more of my wit and charm in describing the details (and more pictures!!) on the fabulous and well-followed Hostess with the Mostess blog HERE.
