This past Sunday we learned about the story of the conquering of Jericho. We made the "Rams" horns as our "Take Home" Activity. The horns were made before class (see previous post). During class the children added the chenille stick around the mouth piece and were allowed to color and decorate their horn any way they wanted. We also used these horns during the review game...but, more on that later. The kids LOVED these horns. They were soooo excited about getting to show their parents their "Rams" horn. Our memory verse this week was from the book of Proverbs. We said and sang the memory verse several times during class...and I am sure they will have it memorized by Wednesday. Our Review Game was a BLAST (the kiddos were allowed to blow their horns during this game.) I had the children draw card from a pile...if they picked a "Trumpet Carrying Priest" then they were a horn blower....if they picked the "Ark of the Covenant" then they had to follow behind the horn blowers as we marched around "Jericho." The children had to answer a question from the story in order to pick a card. This "Review Game" board from the Rahab story served as our Wall of Jericho. We marched around it a total of 13 times...(1 time for each of 6 days and then 7 times for day 7.) Then the kids blew their horns and shouted. Because this is a poster board type game board, I was able to let the wall fall flat. Their expressions were priceless...I love getting them excited about Bible stories. On Wednesday the children will be making this project for the Explorer Journal. The horns are Bugles (from the grocery stores chip aisle.) I coated them with a thick coating of modge podge and let them air dry for several days. They have become extremly hard and I believe will hold up well in their Explorer Journal...I love the arm on the one Priest...it has motion by adding a brad...I love activities that have the kids do several things with their hands... I believe it will help them remember the story very well. Blessings, Ronda

Once god led the Israelites to the Jordan River through Joshua. Joshua was the leader of thousands of Israelites. When they went to the Jordan River, they found that it was a big river and the water was overflowing to its bank. Focus Verses: Joshua 4:20-22,24 20 And Joshua set up at Gilgal the twelve stones they had taken out of the Jordan. 21 He said to the Israelites, "In the future when your descendants ask their fathers, 'What do these stones mean?' 22 tell them, 'Israel crossed the Jordan on dry ground.' - - - 24 He did this so that all the peoples of the earth might know that the hand of the LORD is powerful and so that you might always fear the LORD your God." Joshua was confused for how to cross the river. Thousands of questions rised in his mind. Then he asked to god “How do we cross the river” then god said “Send 12 men with the priests first, carrying my arc. You will find the water will stop flowing as the priest set their feet in the river. Then all of you can cross the river in safety. The next day Joshua gathered all the people together at one place and told them what the lord had said to him. “Now select the 12 men and lets begin” said Joshua soon water stopped flowing as the priests carrying the arc of god aid their feet in the river. It’s stopped way up the river held by the hand of god. Down the river it emptied into sea. Until all the people had passed safely the priest stood in the middle of the river bed holding the arc of god. Then the lord said to Joshua “tell the twelve men that had been selected to take each one a stone from the river bed by where the priests are standing and carry them out and pile them at your camp tonight.” Joshua called the twelve men and told them what the lord had said to him. Then each one picked up a stone and carried it on their shoulders after everyone had passed safely, they watched the river began flowing as usual. As the priest carrying the arc came up from the river. Joshua as said by the god he constructed the monument from the twelve stones at their camp that night. He said “we will make a monument with these stones so that in future when you are asked what this monument is, you can say “ It is a reminder that the river Jordan stopped flowing, when the arc of god passed” You can tell them, How the lord dried up the river, so we could pa safely. That is like when the god dried up the red sea many years ago. Then all the nations of the earth will come to knew how mighty is our god, how great he is and we will worship him forever. I know this lesson is usually divided into several, but I needed to cover the Old Testament in one year. Genesis and Moses were a quarter each, and different people in the Old Testament for the other two quarters. So, this is combined into one lesson. There are so many options for this lesson, too! Review: Today, we are in the Old Testament book called Joshua. We studied about the 12 spies (one man from each tribe) that went and spied the land of Canaan. They came back with grapes so huge, two men carried them on a pole between them! Not all of the 12 spies had faith that God would protect them. The 10 spies lack of faith made God angry, so because they had searched the land for 40 days, God made the people wander in the wilderness for 40 years. One year for every day. (vs. 34) Jacob and Caleb were the only spies that had faith in God. Lesson: Bible Scripture is Joshua 2-6. Moses told Joshua he would be the next leader. After Moses died, Joshua sent 2 men to spy out Jericho. They went to Rahab’s house and stayed there. The king said that there were spies in his city and told Rahab to bring them to him. Instead, she took the two spies and hid them on her roof and covered them with stalks of flax. She told the king that she didn’t know they were spies. Rahab said that they had left the city after dark, just as the city gates were being closed. She told him that if he chased them quickly, maybe his men could catch them. Rahab went back to the roof and told the two spies that she had heard about God’s power. She asked if they would save her and her family when they took over the city. The spies told her “If you keep our visit a secret, we will protect you.” Since Rahab lived on the city wall, she let them down through the window. The spies told Rahab to make sure everyone stayed in her house when they attacked and to leave a scarlet rope hanging from the window, so they knew which house was Rahab's when they attacked. Then, they left Rahab and the city and hid in the mountains for three days until they were safe. Preparing for battle: The priests were carrying the ark of the covenant and the people were following (Joshua 3:14) the priests. They were going to cross the Jordan River that was always flooded over the banks of the river. The priests dipped their feet into the river, and the water stood still and rose so that everyone crossed over on dry land! God told Joshua to have the 12 men, the leaders from each of the 12 tribes, to put a stone from the Jordan River onto their shoulder. The stones were eventually taken and set up in Gilgal as a memorial. (Joshua 4:20) Joshua also set up stones where the priests stood with the ark of the covenant in the Jordan as a memorial. (Joshua 4:9) The people crossed the Jordan River, and then the priests with the ark finished crossing the river. God told Joshua to have all the men of war march around the city 1 time a day for 6 days and do not talk. The seven priests will carry the rams’ horns each day. BUT, on the seventh day, you will march around the city seven times and the priests will blow the horns. When they make a long blast with the horns, all the people will shout, and the wall of the city will fall flat! Joshua told the two spies to get Rahab and her family, and they took them to the Israelites camp for safety. Everyone in Jericho died and they burned the city. When I usually teach this lesson, I have horns and stack up a bunch of boxes. I have the kids walk around 'Jericho' (the boxes) real quiet. We count the days, then on the '7th' day, they blew the horns, and knocked the boxes over! That's just too much fun! So, if you divide the lessons, there is an idea for each lesson. I made blue Jell-O Saturday night and made it about 2 inches high. Once it was set, I cut it into about 1" wide slices and whatever length you need for the containers you use. I found the 5 pack of containers at Dollar Tree. I bought graham crackers for the 'dry ground' they crossed over and Smarties for the people walking over.
