VERSES: Joshua 4:1-24 MEMORY VERSE: Joshua 4:23 "For the LORD your God dried up the waters of Jordan..." (The activity below may help your students with their memory verse this time. BOOK TO REMEMBER: Review from Matthew to Colossians, making certain most, if not all, have this good foundation upon which to build. PRAYER: Pray that we all might appreciate the greatness and forethought of God to provide for and preserve His people. SPECIAL SONG: Read, Read Every Day (see February - Sons We Sing In Bible Class #1 on this blog) VISUAL AID: TV Box (see February - Visual Aid #1 on this blog) LESSON POINTS: When every one of the Israelites had hurried across the Jordan River and the priests carrying the ark of the covenant on poles were still standing in the middle of the river, God spoke to Joshua who told twelve men, one out of every tribe or family, to cross back over to the middle of the Jordan River and choose a stone. The stones were to be carried on each of the twelve men's shoulders and taken to the place where God's people were camped and the stones laid down there. Everything was done exactly as the LORD had told Joshua to tell the people. The place was called Gilgal. Joshua told the people that God said the stones were to be a sign or symbol for remembering what had happened that day. Joshua said, "When your children ask you what do these stones mean?" then the fathers were to tell their children about how the water in the Jordan River was stopped up, so the ark of the covenant could pass over the Jordan. Using the stones as a visual aid, it would help the people remember. When all the people were across the Jordan River, then the ark of the covenant went in front of the people and led the way. After the ark of the covenant and the priests, 40,000 soldiers prepared to fight followed the ark to the plains of Jericho. On that day, the Bible says that Joshua was great in the sight of all the people of Israel and the people feared or respected him just like they had respected Moses all the days of his life. Joshua commanded the priests to come out of the Jordan River and, just as soon as the priests' feet touched the riverside, the waters of the Jordan returned just like they had been before. God had dried up the Jordan River just like He had the Red Sea, so that all the people of the earth would know the greatness of the LORD God and that the children of Israel would always respect and show their devotion to the all powerful God. We have these lessons all written down in a book called the Bible, so anytime we want to remember a lesson, what do we need do? That's right! We open up the Bible and read! In the Old Testament, they didn't have a Bible like we do, so their fathers would tell their children the stories of how God had protected them, cared for them, and provided for them. We have it easier today, we can read these lessons anytime we choose by opening up God's Word and reading. We need to read each and every day. "Older Student" Tips: Up to this point, how many times can we give an example of how God had provided for His people? (He provided water from the rock, manna and quail, cloud to lead the way, pillar of fire to provide light at night, etc.) ACTIVITY: "Rocks In The River" Memory Verse Mix-Up Materials needed: 48" x 4" piece of paper with a 'rock-type' of design on it, such as wallpaper, contact paper, scrapbook paper, or make your own paper by using white butcher paper and charcoal or black chalk. If you choose to make your own Rock Paper, scrunch the white paper up into a ball, them unfold it. Using the largest side of the chalk, lightly brush the chalk onto the paper; wipe off with a tissue or Kleenex. Then, either laminate, or spray lightly with hairspray to set the chalk. You will also need black markers or crayons, scissors, stapler, staples, and a piece of 8.5" x 11" paper. Pass out 'rock-type' paper. Cut out twelve good-sized (about 4") rocks. On the front with the rock design, write one word on eleven rocks. "For" "the" " LORD" "your' "God" "dried" "up" "the" "waters" "of" "Jordan..." On the twelfth rock, write "Joshua 4:23." Mix up the rocks and unscramble them, so that it will make up the memory verse. Hand out an 8.5" x 11" white paper to each student. Fold white paper in half. Staple white paper on two sides, forming a pocket. Write "Rocks In The River Memory Verse Mix-Up" on the outside of the white paper. Insert rocks into pocket to take home and show their families. The students can take out their "rocks" and form the memory verse. If they get stuck, they simply look up the verse in the Bible. Let's see how many students remember their memory verse next week!

This is part 2 of Joshua and covers the Battle of Jericho. Cathy uses a flip chart for this lesson, so that is the first part of this post. You can click here to download the flip chart pages. Once they are printed and laminated if you like, then you can bind these across the top to create the flip chart. This is the same set of visuals, but they are half the page. Cathy uses a lot of magnetic board visuals and the first lesson in this series is magnetic board visuals, so I added these also. To use them, cut the pieces out after printing, laminate them and add thin magnets on the back. Put your title up first (Joshua for this lesson), then add and take away each visual as you teach the lesson. They can also be used as visuals alone, a smaller flip chart, and/or a bulletin board. Click here to download the visuals. The visuals above are numbered to coordinate with this lesson. Click here to download the lesson. Click here to download the visuals. The file includes visuals for Joshua 1-6: Rahab, The Jordan Crossing and The Battle of Jericho. There are 35 visuals, so all are not shown. (These are not included in the application pack.) Click here to download the pictures to color. (These are the same as the visuals but are black & white.) Click here to see the lesson with more printables. This Joshua The New Leader Bible Craft will help remind children that God calls us to be strong and courageous in following His will.
In this Joshua and the Battle of Jericho printable pack, children will learn about how God gave the city of Jericho into the hands of Joshua.
This is the first in a four part series this month for Joshua. This lesson discusses Moses, then Joshua taking over leadership for the Israelites. Cathy uses these visuals with a magnetic board. She cuts the pieces out, numbers them on the back (this set is already numbered on the front for you), laminates them and adds thin magnets on the back. Put your title up first (Moses then Joshua for this lesson), then add and take away each visual as you teach the lesson. Some of the visuals are the same as what you will see next week, if you'd like to combine them. You won't have to print all of those, unless you like to keep everything in its own pack. They can also be used as visuals alone, a flip chart, and/or a bulletin board. These visuals can also be attached to large craft sticks to be help up while teaching. Click here to download the visuals. This lesson outline is intended to be used with the visuals you see above, although either one can be used alone. The lesson has the same numbers in a box as the visuals to make it easier for you to teach. Click here to download the lesson outline. Our children are growing up in a world that blatantly erects walls in opposition to God and His Word. Pray that the children you teach will come to know their God, as Joshua did, so that they may walk in confident obedience, regardless of the evil that surrounds them. Here are some great activities to help them begin to understand that our obedience, teamed up with God's power, is the key to victory. Bible Truth: Joshua had courage to obey God. Bible Story: Joshua obeyed God, and marched around Jericho. God gave Joshua the victory! Bible Study: Joshua 6 teach dramatic play I like teaching little ones the story of Joshua and the battle of Jericho through dramatic play! I have this set of cardboard blocks that I picked a couple years ago to use as our walls of Jericho. Before that, I use to save ALL my shoe boxes, specifically for this lesson, and they worked great! I like to set the blocks up on a low table, with a table cloth under them. I also gather up the little people from our nativity set. The children can each hold one as they participate in the story, making the people march, sleep and shout. Using little figurines such as Lego people, army men, or anything else you may have, gives the children a perspective of the size of the wall around the city of Jericho. It also gives them a greater appreciation for the incredible miracle God did when He brought the walls down. This sun and moon visual help mark the days and nights, as we dramatize the story. I read the story from a children's storybook Bible, or read selected verses straight from my Bible, pausing to direct the kids, as we act out each part of the story. We march around the city walls once, without a sound, then go lay down to sleep, and repeat the process five more times, just as the Israelite's did. This activity not only burns off some energy, it also helps them to understand that Joshua won the battle because he obeyed, and did exactly what God told him to do, even though other people laughed at him, and made fun of him. Of course, on the seventh time that we wake up, we march around the city seven times, blow our "trumpets" and give a shout! I pull the cloth to make the walls fall down! This makes the point to the kids that Joshua's army didn't make walls fall down. God is bigger and stronger than any walls, or any army, and He made walls fall flat down. Thank You God for giving us the victory!! sing Bigger Than Big - This is a great song to sing during worship time to support the lesson. My God is So Big - This is also a great song to sing during worship time to support the lesson. They Marched Around the City - This is a fun, playful song, set to a classic children's nursery rhyme, to reinforce the lesson, or to do at any time, when you need a little filler. Joshua Fought the Battle of Jericho - This song works best as a puppet song or as a song to listen to during craft time. play they marched around the city Setup the blocks, or boxes, as the walls of Jericho on a table cloth or sheet. Sing "They Marched Around the City", as you march around the walls. At the end, pull the cloth or sheet to knock the walls down. The kids are sure to ask you to play it again and again! craft victory trumpets Here is my version of a simple trumpet craft that makes the dramatic play suggestions even more fun! You will need: scripture labels cardboard tubes (toilet paper or paper towel rolls) construction paper wax paper rubber bands hot glue gun scissors tape crayons To prepare, print and cut the scripture labels. Cut construction paper sheets into fourths, and cut wax paper into approximately 3.5" by 3.5" squares. In class, give the children the scripture labels to color. Tape the scripture to the construction paper as shown above. and then tape the construction paper around the cardboard tube. Place the wax paper over the shown end of the tube, and secure with a rubber band. Apply a couple dots of hot glue to keep the rubber band in place. DO NOT ALLOW CHILDREN TO HANDLE THE HOT GLUE GUN, AND KEEP IT OUT OF THEIR REACH. Make a "doo-do-it-dooo" noise into the open end of the trumpet for a great kazoo sound! the walls fall down This craft gives the children the opportunity to retell the story, and bring home the words to "They Marched Around the City" to sing at home with their parents. You will need: this print out construction paper yarn drinking straws brown paint sponges scissors hole punch glue tape crayons To prepare, print and cut the print out. Cut the solid lines around the wall. Fold the wall along the dotted lines. Cut out the character graphics and the rhyme, on the dotted lines. Punch two holes on opposite ends of the construction paper. Cut drinking straws to about 3" in length, and cut yarn to approximately 24" lengths. Thread a strand of yarn through the cut straw, and then through the holes of the paper. Tie it securely in the back. Cut sponges into rectangular, brick shapes. In class, provide small rectangular sponges and brown paint for the children to stamp brown bricks onto the wall. Allow the walls to dry for a few minutes while you continue working on the craft. Provide crayons for them to color Joshua and the Israelite's. Tape the characters to the straw. Glue the lyrics to the rhyme onto the construction paper. When the walls are mostly dry, tape the bottom tabs to construction paper as shown below. Show children how to manipulate the people to march, and make the walls to fall, as you sing the rhyme.
These Guided Bible Reading Learning Packs were originally created to be sold on Teachers Pay Teachers. I have several packs started, completed or somewhere in between and have been working on them for a year or two. I started making these all-inclusive packs to use at home for Bible study or homeschooling, but they are perfect for Bible class also. Since I was using them at home, they cover a wider range of abilities. Some printables are for preschool and some for older elementary ages. And ages in between! Scripture is Joshua 6. I also realize that some people do not like graphics for Bible material, so a lot of the printables do not have any. Most pages are available in color and black & white when possible. Most worksheets with Biblical questions have a teacher's answer sheet included. This has 50 pages and you won't use everything unless you are using it for a variety of ages. Here is what is included and some ideas to use the pages: The lesson and scriptures are in the pack first, then a fill-in-the-blank worksheet. These lessons follow directly through the scripture. After or during the scripture reading, it can be used as a clarification of the text. Or, if you are using this pack for more than one study session, it can be read as a reminder of what was learned previously. This is intended for older students, but for preschool or non-writers, the questions can be read and discussed instead. There is also a set of Review the Facts/Task Cards to review the scripture. And Word Wall labels are included. These are black & white only, but can be printed on color paper. They can be put into a container for students to pick out or hand out and answer, or divide the class into groups and make it game. They LOVE these buzzers and get excited when they see them! Younger students love these stand-up displays. This includes the color and black & white background and people. Print on cardstock. Cut around the outside solid line of the stand-up and fold on the center dotted line. They can retell what they remember of the Bible account. These can also be used as a teacher's visual. They are nice because pieces can be moved around, added and removed, etc. There is a maze, crossword puzzle, word search and word scramble. There is a color map and pictures to color, also. These application worksheets are help the students think deeper about the scripture and how they would act and feel during a similar situation. These Discussion Starter Key Question worksheets are intended for review. There is color and black & white and with or without the graphics. I picked one two key verses for Joshua. There are posters in color and black & white. There are fill-in-the-blank worksheets (NKJV) and a worksheet for younger students to copy the scripture and are black & white only. All these will help with memorization. Click here to download the Joshua Guided Bible Pack. Click here to download the visuals. The file includes visuals for Joshua 1-6: Rahab, The Jordan Crossing and The Battle of Jericho. There are 35 visuals, so all are not shown. Click here to download the pictures to color. (These are the same as the visuals but are black & white.) Look for more Joshua printables using the search bar or the Labels on the right side. This poster and cut & glue worksheet was designed to use with this pack. I wasn't sure if or when I would share this Joshua pack, so I added the poster early. Click here to see it. This worksheet was also created to be used with this pack. Click here to download it.

VERSES: Joshua 10:1-43 MEMORY VERSE: Joshua 10:13 "And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed..." BOOK TO REMEMBER: Review all books learned, including the Old Testament books. PRAYER: Thank God for being a great God, one who can control the sun and the moon! SPECIAL SONG: Read, Read Every Day (see February - Songs We Sing In Bible Class #1 on this blog.) VISUAL AID: Large Activity (see below) LESSON POINTS: During this time of Joshua's life, it was a time of fighting. The Israelites were doing what the LORD commanded them and that command was to take the land away from the people who lived in Canaan. The people who lived in Canaan did not worship God, but worshiped idols. Remember last time how the Gibeonites had tricked the Israelites into not killing them and how Joshua had made them into their servants? Do you remember what their jobs were when they were punished? That's right! They were to chop wood and draw water all of their lives. The city that these people had lived in was called Gibeon. It was a very large city, and it had many mighty men of valor or brave men. The king of Jerusalem had heard how Joshua had taken Ai and destroyed it as he had done with Jericho. Even though it was based on a lie, the children of Israel had made peace with the Gibeonites and the king of Jerusalem did not like it one bit! He was very afraid of the Israelites and decided to invite other Amorite kings who lived around Canaan to talk about how they should fight the Gibeonites because they had made peace with Israel. All five kings thought fighting with the Gibeonites was a great idea and started fighting with them. The Gibeonites sent word to Joshua way down in Gilgal asking the Israelites to come and save them from the five kings. God told Joshua not to be afraid because He had delivered them all into Joshua's hand, meaning Joshua and the Israelites were going to win the battle. Joshua, all the soldiers, and the mighty men of valor hurried and traveled all night and attacked the enemy. The LORD had confused the soldiers of the Amorite kings and a great number of the enemy died and the others were chased away. But, as the enemy ran away, God made great hailstones come down from heaven and even the ones who ran away died. In fact, more soldiers died from the hailstones than from the Israelites killing them with swords. Then something unusual happened! Joshua spoke to the Lord in the hearing of the all the children of Israel, asking God to make the sun stand still and the moon stop...and they did! The sun did not move and the moon stayed still a whole day until the Israelites finished fighting and won the battle. The Bible says that the LORD fought for Israel that day. There was never a day like that before or after. God had listened to the voice of a man--Joshua's voice--that day. Joshua and all his soldiers returned to their camp at Gilgal where Joshua found out that the five kings had escaped and were hiding in a cave in a city called Makkedah. Joshua told his men to roll great stones in front of the cave and told soldiers to stand guard. While Joshua and the other soldiers continued to pursue the enemy, the soldiers were not to let the kings escape. The Israelites, again, won the battle, but Joshua had not forgotten the five kings. In the end, the kings were killed because God was against them. Whenever the Israelites obeyed God and did what He said, they always won the battle because they were doing what God had told them to do. But there were always grave consequences for those who were against God. "Older Student" Tips: All the time the Israelites were conquering the land of Canaan, there were battles and more battles. Joshua was a great leader and he had many men of valor fighting beside him. Joshua always obeyed God and God was with him. God is with us, too, when we obey God. Had God ever made the sun stand still or commanded the moon not to move before this? After this? Read Joshua 10:14. God is a great God! ACTIVITY: The Sun And The Moon Stopped Materials needed: 12" x 18" light blue construction paper, 10" x 18" of orange cellophane, 4" x 10" white construction paper, scissors, glue, crayon. Pass out orange cellophane to students. Cut in half with scissors. On one half, cut large sun out with rays of sunshine. On other half, cut a circle out of the cellophane. On left side of blue paper, glue sun with rays. In the middle of the sun with rays, glue the circle. Cut crescent moon out of white paper. Glue white moon on right side of blue paper. Write "Sun stand still..." and it did!" and "The moon didn't move" and "Joshua 10:13" wiggling around the sun and moon.
Thanks to Haley Wilson for sharing her photos and ideas! Haley teaches one of the preschool classes with Glenda Wilson. And Glenda creates most of the ideas that Haley uses. Haley says we need this or that and Glenda creates it! Thanks to both for permitting me to share! Thanks to Jeanne Dickson for sharing her Bible class songs! I have created a flipchart for The Battle of Jericho song that is shown below. That is a lot of boxes! If you know someone that works at FedEx or UPS, ask if they can get them for you! The boxes were placed on a plastic tablecloth and was pulled to knock down Jericho at the right time. The teacher pulled the tablecloth from the opposite side the students were so they didn't see it. Don't tape the boxes so they can be folded and saved to reuse. This is so much hands-on fun for kids! **These boxes can be used for The Tower of Babel and Nehemiah's Wall** They blow the horn and march around Jericho. And the walls came tumbling down! Haley made the horns with brown construction paper wrapped around horns The plastic horns can be purchased here (smaller packs are available in stores). Here's an idea I haven't seen before! (Photo and ideas used with permission) Jeanne Dickson covered Pringles cans and built Jericho with them! These are a great visual and would be so much fun to knock down. They can be used for other Bible cities also. Just use a box or Jeanne suggests that Bluebell single serving ice cream cups would be perfect to use (they have a plastic lid). The download includes 9 choices of brick and stone backgrounds that can be printed and glued to a Pringles can. They can also be printed and cut down to cover your square building for Rahab. Click here for the backgrounds. Here are some songs by Jeanne: This color flipchart has a new song by Jeanne Dickson for The Battle of Jericho. There is a one page black & white printable if you prefer to not use the flipchart. Click here to download. Here is another song by Jeanne Dickson! This includes a one-page black & white printable of the song and a color flipchart of the song. Click here to download. Preschool included: Joshua Leads the Israelites in Numbers 27:18-23 & Joshua 3-4 The Walls of Jericho in Joshua 2 & 6 Other lessons and Newsletter Foldables included: Rahab and the Two Spies in Numbers 27:18-23 & Joshua 2 Crossing the Jordan River in Joshua 3-4 The Walls of Jericho in Joshua 6 The Gibeonites Deceive Joshua in Joshua 9 The Newsletter Foldable can be used as a review handout, sent in the mail or in an email, especially for those unable to be in class. Do not be afraid. Do not lose hope. I am the Lord your God. I will be with you everywhere you go.” Joshua 1:9 (NIrV) Lessons: Castle Moat (King Ardor) Joshua 1:7-11 & Joshua 3, Crossing the Jordan King Ardor loves his castle and the people in it. He built a moat around it to protect everyone outside from intruders. God wants to surround us and be our protector. We can have courage knowing that He is with us. When Joshua became leader of the Israelites, he was given assurance that God would be his moat of protection. Objective: Kids will learn, “I can have courage knowing God cares about me.” Knight's Armor (Sir Laughsalot) 1 Samuel 17:20-49, David and Goliath With his suit of armor and his mighty sword, Sir Laughsalot laughs in the face of danger. But Sir Laughsalot remembers the story of the young boy who defeated his enemy without armor or sword. David defeated Goliath with only a sling, a stone, and a complete trust in God. Objective: Kids will learn, “I can have courage knowing God is in control.” Royal Banquet (Lady Whenimhere) 1 Kings 19:1-18, God Comforts Elijah Being a Knight of the Oval Table can be difficult. The knights often return from their quests tired and afraid. Lady Whenimhere is always there to take care of the knights, offering them a royal banquet to restore their health and a listening ear to help them feel better. Elijah was scared and ran into the wilderness when Queen Jezebel had ordered Elijah's death. Even though he was afraid, God gave him the courage to go back and finish the mission God had given him. Objective: Kids will learn, “I can always talk to God when I’m afraid.” Drawbridge (Mervin the Magnificent) Mark 15:22-30, 37-41; Matthew 28:1-10, Jesus' Death and Resurrection Mervin the Magnificent is King Ardor's top adviser. Some say Mervin has special powers. That may be why it only took Mervin one day to repair the drawbridge that lets others into the castle. Nothing Mervin can do, however, even comes close to the magnificent thing Jesus did on the cross: He died for our sins and made a way for us into His kingdom forever. Objective: Kids will learn, “Jesus had the courage to be my Savior.” Catapult (Sir Gladihad) Luke 17:11-19, Jesus Heals 10 Men Sir Gladihad is a happy guy. He's glad for everything he has – especially his trusty catapult, that sends boulders flying through the air. He knows that gratitude is the key to success. When we are thankful for all that God has done for us, our love and trust in God grow. The more we love God and trust Him, the more our courage grows! Just like Sir Gladihads boulders, our faith in God can send us flying to new heights. Objective: Kids will learn, “God has given me so many reasons to thank him.” _______ About This VBS: Medieval Themed Perfect for kids ages 6-12 5-days of lessons and activities Includes large group activities and small group discussion This VBS program is an instant download Download a free sample lesson here.
Enjoy!

This is number 4 of the Joshua series which I found very interesting! Cathy uses these visuals with a magnetic board. She cuts the pieces out, numbers them on the back (these are numbered on the front), laminates them and adds thin magnets on the back. Put your title up first, then add and take away each visual as you teach the lesson. They can also be used as visuals alone, a flip chart, and/or a bulletin board. This set of visuals also includes a black & white map that can be printed for the students and a black & white plain map that they can write the cities in. You can also use the black & white map to enlarge onto poster board for a large teacher's visual aid. Click here to download the visuals. A reader left a comment asking about crowns for this lesson. That is a great idea and kids will wear crowns any chance they get! I created these black and white so they can be printed onto color cardstock or paper. You have a choice to print one crown with all 5 kings on it, or five different crowns which would be great to use and let the students act the lesson out. Thank you Janet for the idea! Click here to download the crowns. This lesson was written to be used with the above visuals, but can be used on it's own. The numbers in the left column are the same as the numbered visuals. Thank you to Haley Wilson for permission to use these photos and ideas! Joshua was the third lesson in our Armor of God VBS and Haley taught preschool ages 3-4 and kept them in her classroom for the whole time! Using different areas in the classroom with various activities and more kept the kids interested and happy! Haley used a cut & glue project for Joshua. The template is included, and you can cut rectangles as shown for the kids to glue onto the walls of Jericho. A picture to color is included. Click here to download. This is so much fun! And this is a lot of boxes! Here is a hands-on Ark of the Covenant to make. Haley used this Ark of the Covenant display with the priests carrying it. Click here to see more Joshua for VBS.
