From the Art Room....by Carey: I decided to begin our school year with studying self portraits in different styles gaining inspiration from different contemporary artists. The Grade 3's are basing their class work on the theme of Pirates. In the art room they produced exciting mixed media Pirate Portraits. Here we discussed the correct positioning and proportion of the features - there was much excitement as the children added gold teeth, earrings, scars, nose rings, braids and even bandanas to their pirates with a designer flair! The most exciting thing was naming these salty rogues! The work of well known American 'Pop Artist' James Rizzi, whose paintings are cartoon-like, with bold vibrant, exciting images and colours was studied by the Grade 4 classes. Self portraits in Rizzi style were produced, showing the big, bright eyes which is a Rizzi trademark. How the children loved doing this! Rizzi designed and constructed many buildings, and much of his work shows city scenes with colourful buildings. We decided to use paint chips and stickers to create a city scene of buildings on the background of our portraits. Excellent results were obtained to the delight of all! Grade 5's took Rizzi's work a little further by painting colourful buildings forming the background of their self portraits. What fun this work was! Romero Britto is a neo-pop painter and sculptor. He combines stereotypical elements of cubism, pop art and graffiti in his work. The Gr 6 children found his work wonderfully absorbing, and carefully executed beautifully completed self portraits in pastels. Our Gr 7 classes continued the portrait theme by producing ethnic African Masks. Having seen metalwork projects done by schools in America and Europe, I wanted to try this too. I encountered many problems in trying to source aluminium for this project. No one could supply me with the Aluminium sheets which seemed so freely available elsewhere. It was time to think ' out of the box', and lo and behold, inspiration struck like a lightning bolt (not too much of that happens usually!!!). I contacted a catering company and asked for lasagne dish lids. The journey in experimentation began - blunt pencils, knitting needles, nintendo styluses, hair clips .....all were used for the embossing. Permanent markers were added for colour. The hair extensions were purchased from one of my favourite stores - PEP! The children loved this project and produced AMAZING results! Well done, Grade 7's! What a CREATALICIOUS start to the year!!

Groepswerk door leerlingen van groep 8 Kinderboekenweek 2023: Bij mij thuis! Benodigdheden: stevig tekenpapier A4 formaat in lengte doorgesneden viltstiften plaksel en schaar groot vel blauw fotokarton als achtergrond James Rizzi is geboren in 1950 te Brooklyn. Hij studeerde op de kunstacademie van Florida (Gainesville), waar hij experimenteerde met schilder- en druktechnieken en beeldhouwen. In Rizzi’s werk kom je vaak zijn geboorteplaats New York tegen. De schilderijen zien er soms kinderlijk naïef uit, metde felle kleuren en stralende vrolijkheid. In de kunstpers wordt hij vaak bestempeld als ‘Urban Primitive Artist’. Rizzi zegt zelf beïnvloed te zijn door Picasso, Klee en Dubuffet. Laat enkele schilderijen van Rizzi zien en bespreek wat opvalt: vrolijke kleuren geen nuances binnen de kleuren alles is zwart omlijnd huizen hebben menselijke gezichten/kenmerken het werk is vol en druk ook de achtergrond is gevuld Wat moet je doen? Teken een hoog huis of flat in Rizzi-stijl, dus een huis met een gezicht en andere menselijke dingen, zoals kledingstukken en ledematen. Let op: het moet een huis blijven, dus geen vierkant mens! Kleur het huis in met viltstift. Omlijn de details met zwarte fineliner. Knip je huis uit en trek de buitenkant om met een dikkere zwarte stift. Teken dingen voor in de lucht: sterren, een maan, wereldbol, luchtballon, ufo’s etc. Zie hiervoor de schilderijen van Rizzi. Om er een groepswerk van te maken, maakt elke leerling minstens één huis en één ding voor in de lucht. Schik alles op een blauwe ondergrond. Begin achteraan met plakken, zodat de onderste rij huizen er deels overheen geplakt kan worden. Let bij het plakken op de kleuren: geen twee dezelfde huizen naast elkaar. Plak vervolgens de sterren e.d. op de achtergrond. Beeldaspecten: ruimte (overlapping), kleur, lijn Technieken: tekenen, kleuren, omlijnen, knippen&plakken. Groep 7 met hun Rizzi-groepswerk

James Rizzi ist in der Nacht zum 26.12.2011 in seinem New Yorker Studio gestorben. Wie sein deutscher Verlag und sein Agent mitteilten, sei Rizzi eines nat?rlichen Todes gestorben. Bisher gibt es zur genauen Todesursache noch keine weiteren Informationen.
After looking at the work of IM Pei and James Rizzi students created their own cities making sure to have smaller building in the front, mid-sized building behind that and taller buildings in back. After you create the city, color it. We used crayons but you can use watercolor or markers if you like that look better. Changing some of my lessons to STEAM lessons I had kids work in groups to create and entire city. They have really learned a lot about how to work in groups through this new approach. This year I had the kids add in some type of vehicle to their city. I give them extra paper to create what ever type of vehicle they wanted and then asked them to cut it out. We used 3Do's to attach the cars to the city.

When they were done, they used the extra pieces to either make a car, or an extra building, or some other odds and ends, such as the airplane, the sun, and the moon.
