Plus: Coming back from maternity leave to a disaster, and a coworker who won't stop talking about religion 😵💫
Teach your students how to write an ode. This free poetry lesson for upper elementary and middle school students is really fun! Free printables are included!
This week I returned from maternity leave for the second time. As expected, the experience is bittersweet. Part of me can't wait to get into the classroom, but the other part is filled with anxiety about the return to school and leaving my girls. My daughter, Emmeline, was born in May and had turned six months just before my return to school, a similar timeline from my experience with my oldest daughter. The two go to a daycare a few days a week and are watched by their grandparents for the other days, which makes the transition easier, but still!!!There was no way I could bring these emotions into the classroom with me! Kids smell fear. My students need an emotionally prepared teacher; someone ready to dive into the trenches with them and get the work done. After careful consideration, thoughtful discussions, and experience, these are some of the things that have helped me ROCK my return to the classroom! 1. Adjust to your Child's Daily Caregiver There was no way I'd be able to drop the girls off at daycare for their first day and go to school focused. No way. I'd be too occupied worrying and wondering about them! Therefore, before I returned to work, I sent the girls to daycare for 2-3 weeks a few short days. This gave me an opportunity to get to know their teachers, school policies, and also provided my kids time to get used to the new routine. After a few weeks, drop off was easier, and I wasn't worried during the day; I knew my babies were okay and in good hands! Plus, that alone time during the day gave me time to prep materials I knew I'd be using when I returned!2. Get Used to the Morning Routine I tried to wake up at our quasi-normal time a few weeks before going back so I could test a two things. First, I wanted to see how traffic was on the way to daycare at that time. More importantly, I needed to know how long it took me to get ready in the morning with the kids. One day, it took me TWO HOURS to get out of the house with the girls. That was good to know! I made adjustments to our routine, did some more prep work at night, and was able to sleep in a bit longer in the morning.3. Start Later in the Week The first week back to school is EXHAUSTING, add a baby at home in the mix? Forget it! You need time to recuperate. Also, starting later in the week has worked wonders for me in the classroom. I like to start on a Thursday. On Thursday, the students get to know me and my expectations. On Friday, I assess the students through an activity or practice. Then, I analyze their progress over the weekend, plan for the next week, and come Monday it's like I never left! 4. Get to Know Student Names ASAP This is important. The kids are already in the school mentality. The sooner you learn their names, the sooner they take your class seriously. When you don't remember your student's names, it feels like September when it's just review, and in their brain, no real learning is going on. But! When you learn their names, there is a noticeable change in the students. For me, having a conversation with each child works best. The kids come in and complete a Getting to Know You quiz. While working, I sit with each student and have a 30 second - one minute conversation with them. I ask about their shoes, jewelry, pencil cases, weekend plans, anything that gets them talking! I use their names as much as possible in this conversation. My kids sit in pods, so after I talk to all students in a pod, I stand and recall the names of all the kids I just spoke with. By the time I finish talking to all students, I know all of their names, and they are thoroughly impressed! 5. Plan Out Dinner for Your First Week - and Order Take Out on Friday! The last thing I wanted to do when I got home was cook dinner. Even though I don't normally meal prep, I did that first week! What a life saver! Find quick, easy foods that you can make without hassle for that first week. And definitely order delivery on Friday! You deserve it!!!6. Get a Support System Find friends, family, colleagues who can help you in any way. Maybe a friend can make copies for you one morning. Maybe your spouse can help pick up the baby. Find someone you can talk to, someone you trust. I'm very lucky to have so many close friends in my building. My first day back I had multiple calls and texts from colleagues saying they were excited I was returning. Yes, I was leaving my girls, but after those messages, I couldn't wait to get to school! Breathe - enjoy - and try to relax! Going back to work is a huge adjustment. Find happiness every day in your classroom and with your students. It makes the drive to school that much easier! By The Daring English Teacher Task cards might just be one of the most underrated and undervalued assets for middle school ELA and high school English teachers. Task cards are not only versatile and engaging, but they are also a great way to shake things up in the secondary ELA classroom. A task card is essentially its namesake - it is a card, usually about the size of a quarter sheet of paper, with some sort of task or question on it. Task cards come in sets that focus on a particular skill or standard. Using task cards in the middle school ELA or high school English classroom is an excellent way to practice new content and review before an assessment. For example, my parts of speech task cards resource includes two sets of 40 task cards for 80 task cards total. Since these task cards are all about the parts of speech, each task card contains a task that requires students to identify a part of speech. Task cards can be a secondary ELA teacher’s best friend because of their ease of use and versatility. Task Cards Ease of UseMost task cards come as complete sets with multiple cards per pack. Each set includes numerous tasks for students to complete. Once you complete a little bit of prep work before the first use, task cards are very simple to implement in the classroom. One of the best ways to prep task cards for their initial use is to print the card on bright white cardstock and then laminate the cards for longevity. I have several sets of task cards in my classroom that I’ve used for several years in a row now. I keep them all stored together so that there is very little prep required when it is time to use them next year. On task card days, there are two ways I facilitate my class. One way is to place my students into groups of four to five students and provide each group with an entire task card set. Using this method, students work collaboratively in the group as they complete each task, and they do not move around the classroom. Another way I like to organize task card day in my classroom is to have set stations placed throughout my classroom. When I use the station approach, I place several cards at each station. Student groups then rotate from station to station as they complete the tasks. However you plan to include task cards in your instruction, once you prep them, they are good to go for years to come. Task Card VersatilityTask cards also offer a lot of versatility in the classroom because of all of the different kinds of task cards and how many different ways you can incorporate them into the classroom. One way to use task cards in the classroom is to use them as one station in a stations activity. For example, one of my favorite ways to introduce a new novel to my students is by including the pre-reading set of task cards from my Response to Literature Task Cards set as part of a station activity. I use the pre-reading task cards for one of the stations and have several copies of the book displayed. For another station, I provide students with some brief contextual information and instruct my students to do some quick research to become acquainted with the historical and social context. For a final station, I have my students respond to some book-specific reflection questions, kind of like an elaborated anticipatory guide. Another way to use task cards in the classroom is to use them as a class warm-up or bell-ringer exercise. Rather than provide students with the entire set of task cards, simply provide table groups or rows with a few cards from the set. Again, this is a great way to focus on a particular skill throughout the week. For example, if you are working on pronoun-antecedent agreement, spending a week using these pronoun task cards as a bell-ringer activity is a great way to sprinkle in some grammar work into your lesson plans. Benefits of Using Task CardsUsing task cards in the classroom has a few benefits. First, task cards offer a break from the standard practice worksheet. So just because it is something new, students will be more engaged. Also, students benefit from the repetition of completing multiple related tasks in a brief amount of time. The increased engagement and repeated practice of the skills will help students with retention. Free Task Card Download To help you get started using task cards in your classroom, I've created this sentence combining task card starter kit as a free download. To use these sentence combining task cards in your classroom, print them out, cut them into four cards, and have your students begin working on them! These sentence combining task cards also work well with my sentence combining bell ringers. Types of Task CardsThere are so many different types of task cards that teachers can use in their classrooms. From analysis to skill-specific, there are task cards for all sorts of ELA-related activities. I mainly use three types of task cards in my classroom: generic analysis task cards, skill-specific task cards, and literature-based task cards. Generic Analysis Task CardsSome of my favorite task cards are the text analysis task cards: literary analysis, rhetorical analysis, and poetry analysis. I love these task cards because they can be used with any text, and they are a simple addition to the curriculum that helps students practice and build critical-thinking skills. Skill-Specific Task CardsAnother type of task cards is more skill-specific task cards. These skill-specific cards provide students with the practice they need to master a new skill. Some of my favorite skill-specific task cards are my parts of speech task cards and my coordinating conjunction task cards. Literature-Based Task CardsFinally, there are literature-based task cards. These literature task cards are ideal as an and-of-novel review and analysis type of activity. Each literature-based task card set includes six essay-level questions that will require students to reflect on the novel and use critical-thinking skills. Some of my literature task card sets include Lord of the Flies, Of Mice and Men, and Animal Farm. Like task cards? Check out these links! "Views of Xiao and Xiang Rivers," by Tani Buncho (1788) DIMENSIONS • 9" x 12" (Image: 6.38" x 10.5") • 12" x 16" (Image: 8.5" x 14") • 16" x 20" (Image: 10.38" x 17") • 20" x 30" (Image: 15.88" x 26") • 24" x 36" (Image: 19" x 31") Archival Inkjet on Fine Art Paper Smooth Surface - Matte Finish - Inset Borders ABOUT THE ARTWORK ----------------------------- By the early age of 25, Tani Buncho had already mastered the literati painting style of the Ming dynasty Wu school. His 1788 paintings of the "Eight Views of the Xiao and Xiang Rivers" clearly show a style that differs from not only the Southern Song-inspired mode of Muromachi ink painting but also the Kano school. Inscriptions by the Confucian scholar Ichigawa Kansai (1749–1820) on "Returning Sails Off a Distant Coast," and the inscriptions by other elites on the remaining sections, suggest that these Wu school-style paintings were possibly ordered by newly prominent Edo period Confucian scholars. Buncho’s original set of eight paintings seems to have been initially made as album leaves that were later remounted as hanging scrolls. Credit Line: Text courtesy of The Cleveland Museum of Art. ART-CENTRIC DESIGN ----------------------------- Vintage art is not standardized. The original works are usually too long, or too short, to neatly fill a store-bought frame. Most shops arbitrarily crop the artwork to match, leading to claustrophobic prints with missing or partial elements. These modifications — sometimes trivial, sometimes ludicrous — are not always shown in the product photos. We believe that the purpose of art is not to fill a frame; it is the purpose of a frame to showcase the art. Our prints have inset borders that make up any differences in proportion between the artwork and a standard frame, so that you can experience the art as the artist intended. They look sharp in beveled mats, may be float mounted, or inserted directly into standard frames; the borders providing a mat-like accent around the image. There are many styles from which to choose. Framing is a fun, creative process that enhances the artwork and livens your space for years to come. Should you like any advice, feel free to reach out. CUSTOMIZATION AND IMAGE REQUESTS ----------------------------- We are happy to customize our prints to fit your frame. Borderless prints may require the artwork to be cropped to fit a new aspect ratio. In such cases, we will provide a mockup to ensure that the final product meets with your approval. If you’re looking for an artwork that is not in our catalog, feel free to ask if we can provide it. We will print any public domain or openly licensed image that is available in high resolution. MUSEUM QUALITY ----------------------------- Giclée process prints are the gold standard in fine art reproduction. We use a matte finish, cotton fiber paper to maximize detail while eliminating glare. Our prints display a wide color gamut, deep blacks and beautiful tonal transitions. Produced using only archival materials, they will not fade or yellow, but maintain their original quality for as long as you own them. HANDMADE DECLARATION ----------------------------- To assure artistic quality, all of our production and design is strictly in-house. Every print has been proofed, calibrated and inspected for defects. We do not drop ship, resell or make use of third-party production partners. SHIPPING AND PACKAGING ----------------------------- All orders ship within one business day via USPS First Class, Priority Mail or Priority Mail Express. Sizes 9” x 12” and 12” x 16” ship in a flat configuration, unless combined with larger prints, which require tubes. We will replace any lost or damaged items at no expense to you. HAPPINESS GUARANTEE ----------------------------- We will promptly address any issues that may arise with your order. If you are unhappy with your print for any reason, you are welcome to return it for a full refund.
Clement Haupers (1900-1982), Shore Leave, aquatint and etching, 1935, signed, titled, dated and inscribed “ed 75”. In excellent condition, printed in black on a heavy ivory wove paper with deckle edges all around, presumably printed in an edition of 75, archival matting. 10 1/2 x 8, the sheet 14 5/8 x 10 3/4 inches. A fine fresh impression, with the various aquatint tonalities contrasting vividly. Behind the sailor and the three attractive women is a piano, and a juke box and wall displaying the names of popular ’30’s songs including “All of Me,” “Think of the Fun We Had,” “Fit as a Fiddle,” “And so to Bed,” and, appropriately for the Great Depression, the upbeat “I’ve Got Five Dollars.” Haupers studied in Paris with the Cubist painter André Llote, who influenced his style and perspective. Upon completing his studies in France, Haupers returned to Minnesota where he became an influential teacher at the St. Paul School of Art. He rose to prominence in 1935 – the year he made Shore Leave – as the state and regional director of the New Deal’s Federal Art Project in Minnesota, which hired unemployed artists to decorate public buildings and parks. In 1981 Clement Bernard Haupers was the first recipient of the “Minnesotan of the Year” award. He was born and died in the same house in St. Paul.

Who wrote it: rockers Green Day or poet Walt Whitman? Your students will have so much fun trying to decide whether the quote is from a Whitman poem or lyrics from a Green Day song! You can use the interactive bulletin board display OR the student handout and presentation as an anticipatory set to ignite excitement and appreciation for poetry. The zipped bundle includes a 46-page PDF for the interactive bulletin board (45 quote cards + one heading page), a paper-saver bulletin board option with all 45 quote cards, a 2-page PDF student handout (45-question "quiz"), a 2-page teacher answer key, and a 134-slide presentation (updated to include an editable PowerPoint presentation as well as the PDF). The presentation and the interactive bulletin board both include the answers with details about the poem or song that is quoted. As a bonus, the handout includes a brief bio about both authors. It's a great way for your students to have a POSITIVE attitude about poetry. It also helps them see that the lines of poems are very much like song lyrics, which helps students to understand the meaning. A vibrant open edition fine art giclée print featuring my original illustration "Wishing Boy." Professionally printed on archival cotton rag paper, carefully packaged, and delivered to your door. Bring a little extra magic to your walls! "Pitter-patter goes the rain An endless maddening sound Dripping on the roof above, Torrents ’cross the ground In this year of endless floods There is no sun in sight Just dense, dark clouds and misty fog No memory of daylight A boy sits back to windowsill No school. No fun with friends. Roads have turned to rivers From deluge without end His fingers worry at a knot. Like the sky, his mind dim and gray Suddenly a flash of light Draws his head away He dashes to the window As more and more streak down A rain of burning meteors… “We’re doomed!” He’s quick to frown. Grabbing bucket, grabbing coat To dash into the yard As the stars rain down in puddles— Sizzle, plip! They splash down hard. Ker-plop! A star falls in his hat. “It worked,” a small voice cries. He blinks as the tiny star rises up To hover ’fore his eyes “What worked?” he asks. “My wish,” she chirps. “I wished upon a boy.” “Boys don’t grant wishes,” he responds But that won’t crush her joy. “Not now,” he adds, now quite aware Of sizzles all around He scoops her in his bucket dry Rescuing more before they drown A soggy job it is indeed As he splashes to and fro But then, at last, he’s safely stowed away Each precious little glow In the house, the merry stove Dries boy and his new star friends The sassy wee one sits on his cup And chatters without end He grills some cheesy sandwiches And feeds her gooey Swiss “This must be what it’s like,” he thinks. “To have a little sis.” After lunch they bob behind And flock up to his room To hover there like fireflies And chase away the gloom He builds them forts of building blocks, They all play hide-and-seek. He draws them cars and people things In delight they giggle, chirp, and squeak And finally, as the stove burns low, They gather at the door He begs of them to stay with him To play a while more The rain has slowed to little drips. Into the sky they whizz The sassy one pauses at his nose “I was right,” is all she says. He makes a wish, and wipes his eyes Before he heads inside Perhaps they’ll come again someday… Hope is in his stride." —Wishing Boy, Morsels of Magic (Art & Poem by Laura Diehl) -A 1" border is added IN ADDITION TO chosen image dimensions, to keep the image at a more standard framing size.
