Okay, who's a fabric hoarder? Go ahead--fess up. :) You are in good company, I assure you. Good news!! I have a CURE for your problem. It is this fun and festive fabric flower garland! It is easy to make, and you can use up a bunch of those fabric remnants you've been hanging on to! I found an EXCELLENT tutorial on how to make the flowers from Rox's World of Quilts. She shows how to make two variations of this flower--I stuck with the second one for this garland. They are seriously simple. Once you make one, you will have the process down for the rest. For measurement reference (so you know how many you can make with the fabric you have), each 1/4 yard of fabric makes 20 petals. Each flower has 8 petals. Hopefully that helps! Here are my flowers all made. I used hot glue to attach buttons or pom-poms to the front and a small piece of felt to the back. Next, line them all up in the order you want them to be in for the garland. Using heavy button thread (embroidery thread would work, too), sew through the back of a couple of petal walls to string them up. Push them along on the thread to arrange them as you'd like. I love the change bright colors make on my drab fireplace! As you would have noticed from the past few posts, that I have been enjoying paper cutting lately.I think these paper cutting projects has not only helped me in improving my paper cutting skills, but has also helped work on my patience, which I have very little of....;) I have to admit, a few times while cutting this leaf, I stopped myself and thought why do I have to do this and then a different voice in my head would say, keep going, it will look nice at the end. Oh well, after two hours of cutting, I was quiet pleased with the result. The only thing is only if I would have drawn a much better leaf to start with..hah...may be next time For this, I used an x-acto knife to cut a picture drawn on a white printing paper. Here are some of the pictures of how I started and in the process. Almost there. Just a few more cuts left. And finally done!!!! Yay!!!! Asparagus is in season, which means not only is it in abundance, but it is typically a pretty good deal at the supermarket. And it should continue to be for a few months. Asparagus is one of the few veggies I didn't grow up eating. We ate a variety--okra, rutabaga, beets, and all kinds of squash--but I never once remember eating asparagus. I've asked my parents about this, and one of them (my dad, I think) had only ever had canned asparagus, and so determined he didn't care for it. As a result, my mom never made it. I think they eat it often now, though. Despite my childhood deprivation, I LOVE this vegetable. I actually started a patch of it in the garden of our old house. Hopefully the new owners are reaping the benefits of my labors. My favorite way to prepare asparagus is roasting it. And this recipe is a fail-safe favorite. The stalks are tender, but not slimy, well-seasoned, and pretty to present. Here's the how-to, followed by the recipe: Cut woody ends off asparagus stalks. In a large bowl, toss together asparagus, scallions, oil, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and shredded Parmesan cheese. Spread coated stalks on a roasting pan. Scoop up the scallions and cheese that are left in the bowl and spread across the top of the asparagus. Here they are, ready to go in the oven. Roast at 450° for 15 minutes. Serve warm. Asparagus are one of the few foods that are appropriate to eat with your fingers. Did you know that? I still use a fork sometimes, though. Parmesan and Scallion Roasted Asparagus Serves 6 Ingredients: 1 lb fresh asparagus 1/4 cup avocado oil (olive or canola work, too) 1/4 teaspoon sea salt Pinch of ground black pepper 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder 3 scallions (green onions), chopped 1/2 cup shredded Parmesan cheese Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 450°. Chop tough, woody ends off the asparagus stalks. I usually take about 2 inches off. 2. Toss all ingredients together in a large mixing bowl, completely coating the asparagus in the oil and spices. 3. Spread the asparagus in a row on a large roasting pan. It is okay for them to touch and overlap some. Scrape the bowl for the excess scallions, cheese, and oil. Spread this across the top of the row of asparagus. 4. Bake 15 minutes. Remove immediately, and serve promptly. Linking up at these parties.
