JC Penney says it will cut 1,000 jobs as it tries to fight its way out from under bankruptcy protection.
The retailer had been struggling before the coronavirus pandemic.

Marvin Ellison, who became the CEO of JCPenney in 2015 after a 12-year stint at Home Depot, was responsible for bringing the department store back from the brink of disaster. Now, he's leaving for an industry that's considered safer from the threat of Amazon.
Another year, another Black Friday and Cyber Monday. And while retailers from Kohl’s to Macy’s, Target to Wal-Mart have been busy trying to thwart “show-rooming”—the consumer practice of examining products in-store and then searching for the best deal online—the venerable JC Penney is literally in a race for its life. In the mid-1900s, Coatesville was a manufacturing gemstone amid the rolling farmland of Chester County. It was home to Lukens Steel, maker of the steel trees that became the first nine stories of New York City's World Trade Center. Retailers such as JC Penney, JJ Newberry, and Woolworth's were large employers serving Coatesville citizens and visitors from neighboring counties. By the mid-1970s, Coatesville's commerce was deeply affected by the influx of shopping malls and big-box stores. Thanks to locally minded developers and community advocates, Coatesville's revival is very real and centers on the arts, boutique retailers, faith-based progress, and handshakes. Coatesville marks its centennial in 2015.
Trade House Tackle, Part 17:J.C. Penney & Co.James Cash Penney (1875-1971) founded the store that bore his name in 1902 in Kemmerer, Wyoming. A lumberjack by trade, he saw the future of retailing long before most others, and by 1912 owned 34 stores across the Rocky Mountains. He began expanding eastward and by 1929 there [...]

Macy’s will close 125 stores and slash about 2,000 positions over the next three years.
We'll beat the feet over the bridge and back to Central, walking northward up the east side of Sierra Street.
JC Penney was once in the washer dryer, refrigerator, stove and dishwasher business. But since that didn’t work out too well 30 years ago, why should it work out now? For a variety of reasons this recently announced strategy, even if only in test, does not appear to be a [...]
Prior to moving to Louis Joliet Mall on the outskirts of town in 1979, JC Penney was located along busy Chicago Street in downtown Joliet. This store was built in the 1950s, before JCP had embarked on a true logo which was used to define their business. I believe this photo dates to 1971, which was the last year of the beloved "Funky-P" era. Note the "Penney Days" sign in the window. It appears to be the exact Helvectia type which JCP has used for (most of) the last 45 years. Therefore, I'm dating this photo to August-September of 1971, the dawn of their Helvectia logo era. Also--note the light posts on the roof. This store featured rooftop parking. Long ramps were constructed on the store's east side (Scott Street), which had no retail frontage. There was also a side entrance along Benton Street, the cross-street in this photo. This building also housed a Woolworth's. It remained operational for a year or so after Penney's moved out. It did feature a lunch counter, but I never ate there. One unique element--both stores were connected by an interior doorway with a large white plastic suspended sign on each side which read "Entrance to Woolworth's" or "Entrance to Penney's"
While shying away from using the word coupon, JC Penney’s recent delivery of a $10 “gift” to its email newsletter recipients demonstrated that the beleaguered department store was finally bending to what its customers have been asking for all along: a deal. Since the commencement of its “Fair & Square” [...]

Blouse Large Axcess / Liz Claiborne Striped Brown / Purple Long Sleeved Cotton Vintage 90s 23" pit to pit 30" nape to hem 21" underarm to cuff (end) From Our Shop in Cincinnati 1 2023 Liz Claiborne (1929 – 2007) began her long career in fashion as a sketcher for Tina Leser in the 1950s. She later became a design assistant to Omar Kiam at Ben Reig, and in the late 1950s, designer for Dan Keller. Claiborne worked as a designer at Youth Guild starting in 1960. She was there for sixteen years before starting her own label in 1976. Her mid-priced casual working clothes were successful from the very beginning. She retired in 1989, but the label continues, very much in the spirit of the founder, with casual, comfortable clothes. Liz Claiborne died in 2007. Later that year, Tim Gunn was hired as the chief creative officer for Liz Claiborne. In 2008 designer Isaac Mizrahi was hired to design the Liz Claiborne New York label. In 2010, Liz Claiborne closed all their stores and stopped distribution to department stores. The clothes are now available only at JC Penney and through television retailer QVC.
