Restorative justice, like mediation, is a form of alternative dispute resolution (ADR). Coming into use in the 1970s informally, and then officially in Canadian jurisprudence in 1990, it's now considered to be a 'mainstream' form of conflict resolution for certain legal offenses. Your students will learn the basics about RJ before being given two assignment options, depending on whether or not a formal version of the process is being used in your school. NOTE: Depending on your individual school's and/or your school district's policies on discipline, you may have to substitute your own assignment, but on the other hand, this could be a real-life opportunity for your students to make an impact in your community. This product was created specifically for the BC Law Studies 12 curriculum; if you're a non-BC teacher, there's a second title slide.

It is also really helpful for us as teachers to not respond in the heat of the frustration. Instead of me immediately responding to their behavior, I provide them with the incident form. This gives them time to cool down as they are reflecting as well as giving me time to consider what I am going to say. Additionally, the form gives you insight into the situation without making judgments right away. You have an idea of where the student is coming from when you read it. The form can also be used to guide any follow-up conversation that might be had with the student. Additionally, forms are helpful for keeping track of student behavior or for communicating with parents. Aka, documentation. I can testify that Restorative Practices work.
