I have always loved to travel and some of my favorite childhood memories include family vacations (aka road trips) with my dad at the wheel, mom as co-pilot, and my sisters and I packed in the backseat of the car chanting, are we there yet? We didn't fly anywhere back then, so we took advantage of every opportunity to stop at those silly tourist attractions, roadside parks, Holiday Inns and STUCKEY'S! Of course, dad always missed the exit and my sisters and I would laugh and laugh about how dad always misses the exit (mom didn't think it was funny)! The point is, we loved to buy Stuckey's world famous divinity and shop for rare treasures (aka cheap souvenirs). Some shops featured collectible "State Plates" depicting a map of the state, fun facts and symbols of the state. I never really payed much attention to those plates until now- fast forward to my Social Studies Class/North America Unit/Regions/The United States and I have a flash back. Kids love to make things out of paper plates and I love things that are cheap so, I decided to let my classes use paper plates to create their own souvenir STATE PLATES! Students were assigned a random state (we drew names out of a hat) and then completed a research assignment using the Atlas, the Internet and other resources to find specific facts about their state. They then used the paper plate as a canvas to creatively display their research data and just like that- a GREAT STATE PLATE is born! My daddy passed away five years ago this month and although I miss him like crazy, I can't help but think of him every time my family takes a road trip. The only difference is- we use GPS and Google Maps, my husband still misses the exits, and we stop at BUC-EE'S- Travel Center. And yes, they have divinity and cheap souvenirs! Here are a just a few of my favorite souvenir plates~ See you at Bucee's,

Titled: Geese of North Sauty This is the sixth piece in my waterbird series. North Sauty Wildlife Refuge, a 264 acre refuge located just outside of Scottsboro, Alabama. Illustrated in my print are a pair of Canadian Geese and their migratory flock in the background. Also depicted are Sheepnose freshwater mussels, one of 180 species of freshwater mussels in Alabama, the most diverse fauna species in all of North America. Many of our mussel species occurs nowhere else in the world. I loved creating this piece and enjoyed the research into all the aspects I’ve included in the print. This limited edition piece is hand carved and individually handprinted onto archival BFK French Rives paper using black oil based Cranfield ink. Image size: 12” x 12” Paper size approximately: 14” x 14” Because of the hand printed process, each print may have slight variations making each one a kind and unique. Each print comes titled, numbered and signed in pencil on the front. It comes to you carefully packaged and protected in tissue paper inside a sturdy mailing tube to ensure that it arrives safely.

We are working on the locations that make NM interesting and unique. After reading and researching points of interest, including state and national parks and monuments, the students had to choose a required number of each to write about. A script was provided for developing writers, but strong writers were encouraged to use stronger voice in their writings. No matter which writing style they chose, the same content was required: What is the place called? Where is it located in the state? What is one interesting fact about it? What is something you might learn about it or the state if you visit it? The brochure was created using am 11” x 18” piece of construction paper that was accordion folded. The cover had to feature an image of NM and the state name. The 4 inside panels focused on specific types of parks , monuments, or events/attractions. The back panel showcased our state’s symbols.

So many people asked me to tackle Alabama's gulf coast. This map was completely hand drawn. This is an off set print made from my original. The print is 18 x 24" standard. Perfect for decorating a second home. I spent months researching and talking to locals. I was thrilled to meet Gail, curator of the Indian and Sea Museum in Orange Beach. I asked her how Orange Beach got its name....She took a deep breath and said "Well, that would be my Great Gran Daddy......and so the fascinating story went. I actually include her story on the map. Great restaurants, white, white beaches and festivals galore! The adjacent towns like Foley, Elberta, Magnolia Springs, Caswell, Josephine are just as interesting. There are so many cool things to experience in this area! The back roads of Baldwin County have to be the most beautiful in the south! No kiddin.
