Here’s a brain break for your eyes! Brain Breaks are not just fun, brain breaks are a must for health and behavior management—a quick and easy way to reset mind and body…and refocus attention on the task at hand. You can do this brain break at any time: before, during or after a lesson to refocus attention. Try this brain break every day for a week, and you might be surprised at how quickly your eyesight improves, you can read small print, see things far away, and you remember to blink and relax your eyes! Have you noticed that more kids wear eyeglasses now, and at a younger age? Computer and TV screens “glue” the eyes, so they don’t move in a healthy way. Eye exercises are a must for eye health, and not just for kids! TECH TIP: You may print this JPEG in color or grayscale and post it in your class as a reminder to practice frequently. Or, you may open it on your SMARTboard, for a large focal point as you do the exercise. I hope you enjoy this…and if you would kindly leave your rating and feedback it would be greatly appreciated! © 2014 Renee Dawn - Please respect the copyright, for use by one teacher in a classroom setting. Chronic back pain is common, and teachers can be extra vulnerable. Sitting for long periods of time is terrible for your back. So is bending over at the waist. I used to do this all the time, to check kids’ work, or to correct their penmanship. Now I bend at the knees. No matter how silly it looks, I know it’s the right thing for my back health. Here are some devices that have helped my back stay healthy and pain-free. 1) This is the TENS system I bought about 5 years ago. It's right up there as one of the best purchases I ever made. It is exactly like the professional machine a physical therapist or chiropractor would use (except the pro model costs $3000). One or two sessions completely dissolve any lower back pain. You have to know how to use it. If you don't, I recommend seeing a professional therapist first. The rules include: don't let the pads touch, don't place the pads directly on your spine or near your heart. Place them in the 2 or 4 spots of most pain, and use for approximately 1 hour a day as needed. Always, always...turn off the electrical device before placing or removing the pads. One important feature is a timer, so it turns off automatically if you fall asleep with it on. Another must-have feature is a variety of electric pulses. 2) My second best tip is to use a lumbar pillow. I rarely sit without one, as nothing beats preventing pain. My favorite back pillow is a half-cylinder memory foam shape. The Tempur-Pedic brand is hands-down the best, and for back health, I splurged. I layer 2 pillows on my deep-set chair. I put the lumbar pillow arched against my lower back. I carry my pillow in a thin burlap bag on those days when we sit all day at professional development. I simply place the bag against a chair for comfort. 3) I also use these 2 foam rollers. They're used to massage legs, hips, back, etc. And they work wonders! As you roll slowly back and forth, you get a deep tissue massage. For the lower back, I place one under the lumbar area and one under the shoulders. Then I roll over both at the same time. A word of warning: your first sessions may be painful, veeeery painful. That’s good. It means all your tight muscles are loosening up. After a week, it’s a pure pleasure. 4) An herbal heat pack creates a total home spa experience. I got this on impulse, and it was one of the great gifts I recommend to anyone for that "ahhhh" feeling at the end of a long day—spent in a classroom or elsewhere. For back health, I make sure to stretch daily and I have my kids do it, too—even if it’s only for a few seconds between lessons. I hope I’m instilling a lifetime habit of health. Of course, if you have chronic back pain, please see a professional first. Find out the root cause, which may involve posture, muscles, arthritis, or spinal discs. And treat your back like royalty. It is.

An Abe Lincoln puppet for all seasons. Beyond adorable. It's a bobble-head Lincoln. It's a break-dancing Lincoln, or a time-traveling Lincoln--surprised at what he sees. A talking Lincoln, telling what he thinks. Any way you look at it, he's a must-have for kids learning about Lincoln. Trouble is, I'm not sure if I can settle for just Lincoln. I might have to have the next guy, too... If you have to have a Lincoln and Washington Puppet fix, no worries--I've got you covered!
Are you a kindergarten teacher? Here are 7 tips to prepare for your first day of kindergarten. If your have time and insight, you’ll see there are hundreds of things to prepare. In my experience, this is the bare minimum that must get done before the first day of school: 1) Clean the desks and chairs and arrange them in clusters within view of the meeting area. You want to make a good first impression that kindergarten will be pleasant and organized. 2) Place a high-interest book on every desk for the kids to sit and read first thing. This will buy time to ensure everyone is settled, and to take attendance. Place an extra book basket on each cluster of desks. 3) Have a list of the class names to check off as kids arrive, and write name tags beforehand, if possible. Write kids' first and last names as well as your class on the tags. 4) Place name tags out on the desks before the children arrive. Place them boy and then girl; and if you know certain kids will need extra attention, place them up front, closer to the meeting area. Have extra name tags for new admits. 5) Prepare paper for children to write on, 30 pencils and 12 boxes of crayons in case they don’t bring their own. These will be used a bit later on the first day. 6) Prepare to talk about rules: classroom, bathroom, lunchroom and line-up. It helps to have visual posters about each of these. Maybe the most important rule is to always show kindness and respect. That's the glue that holds the world together, and you can tell the kids that kindergarten will be a "kinder-garten!" If you'd like this Let's Build a "Kinder" Garten poster, it's here and it's free. 7) Have a fun book to read to the class, and questions for discussion. Also, a few short songs to teach, and extra activities ready to go, in case you have extra time to fill. And, of course, a super-kid award to send your kids home with a smile. Here are some tips for those first few minutes when you meet your kindergarten kids: 1) Smile! Yes, smile. Not a fake beauty pageant kind, but a warm, genuine smile that comes from your deepest core. The place that remembers what it’s like to be 5, and scared, shy and nervous. 2) Greet each parent at the door, if that’s possible. Say your name, and give a warm handshake. Make them feel like they're joining your family. They are! 3) Ask the child, “Who are you?” Then find the name on your clipboard sheet. Ask the parents to check the spelling and correct it. Ask if they prefer a nickname, and possibly if the child speaks English. 4) Ask the parent to come in and check the posters on the wall, and then help their child find their seat (I have placed the name tags out on each desk: boy, then girl), and to read a book. I have one book on each desk, and a basket of extra high-interest books in the center of each table. 5) Needless to say: NO cutting, gluing, toys, or even coloring—nuthin’ honey, till you’ve talked about rules! 6) I hang 3 posters for the parents. The first tells when and where the dismissal is—for today and tomorrow. 7) The second poster asks parents to help seat their child, put on their name tag, and have them read a book till we’re ready. And meanwhile, they can place on their child’s desk ONLY these supplies, in order from largest on the bottom—if they have them—4 folders, 3 marble notebooks, a pencil case with 5 sharp pencils, a crayon box and 1 large eraser. This way I can see who still needs to bring supplies. The second poster also directs parents to place any extra personal supplies (extra pencils, crayons, and sharpener) in the child’s book bag. 8) The third poster requests—if they can—to please help put the shared class supplies into the right bin in the rear of the room. 9) I have baskets, tubs and even large clean garbage bags (for all the paper towel rolls), one for each type of supply that parents send, such as markers, post-its, glue, and tissues. 10) When all the kids have trickled in, give parents a friendly, “2 minutes, and we’ll ask you to go” heads up. 11) Meanwhile, take care of those last few things that MUST be done. Make sure every child has a name tag, and take last minute attendance. The school office may ask for a list of how many kids have showed up, as well as the names of your “no-shows.” 12) If a parent has a letter for you or money (for Scholastic News or the like), place it in a basket under your desk for safe-keeping. 13) You can thank the parents for helping, then say, “It’s time to say good-bye, so we can begin!” Remind parents to pick up their child, where and when. 14) Usually, a principal will allow parents to stay for the first few minutes of kindergarten. If not, please ask your principal if you could have a teacher aide help for those first few minutes. If no one is helping, you can lead the kids straight into the room; have them wait at the meeting area. Call each child in turn, and show them where you’ve placed their name tag. Have each child in turn sit, put on their name tag and read a book till everyone is accounted for. The first day of kindergarten will be memorable. Most important is safety. You want to set a tone of calm and orderliness. Equally important is setting a tone of expectation, that kindergarten will be fun and wonderful. Are you a new kindergarten teacher? Martin Luther King Jr. reminds us to ask the tough questions. And I like to ask them as early as Kindergarten. The more you ask, the more interesting answers you get... Why should we love each other? Why do you love someone? What does brotherhood mean? What makes a good friend? Can you be friends with someone who is very different from you? How can I be kinder? Why should I be kind? How do I feel when someone is kind to me? How do I feel when someone is not kind to me? Why should we be non-violent? What is my dream for the world? If you want to pose the questions, and see some interesting lists of answers, as well as create gorgeous Martin Luther King Jr. Montage with Writing and Art Projects for the kids, give this a try!
10 Reasons You NEED Humor in Behavior Management? Do you really need 10? Well, then... 1) Classroom safety is your number one priority, and discipline is a constant challenge. 2) The same methods won’t work for all kids, all the time. One thing is certain, though: of all the tricks in your behavior management toolbox, humor is one of the most powerful. It’s the carrot not the stick; the honey not the vinegar. 3) Laugh or else! Without joy and spice sprinkled into your day, creative play will go underground in the form of spitballs, graffiti, and pranks; the class clowns and the rebels will rule. Not nice! Remember: If you don’t laugh with your students, your students will laugh at you (behind your back). 4) Memo: Laughter is fun! A big belly laugh will bind the class together with a deep rapport. 5) Humor is creative! Your classroom suddenly becomes high-interest, and your own mind feels fresh and spontaneous…and young. 6) Humor relieves stress. A burst of laughter releases a thousand wrongs. It helps kids—and teachers—deal with change or adversity. 7) Humor makes us more flexible, not stuck in one emotion. It shows us that the world is balanced; that happiness and sadness, triumph and defeat, can coexist. 8) Laughing shakes up our lymph system; it heals our body, mind and soul. It strengthens the immune system, lowers our blood pressure and makes us more present and alert. 9) Laughter is memorable. Kids may not recall a particular lesson, but they will remember if they were happy or sad; at ease or stressed. It puts the pyramid of needs in perspective: first a sense of safety and well-being, and then higher learning can take place. 10) When kids learn how to use humor respectfully, they’re learning the power of respect, empathy, and healthy boundaries in all areas of life. Had enough? Wait! There's more! And I hope you'll share some of YOUR list!! I love a good laugh, and over the years I've collected hundreds of funny things to say and do that will get kids to behave--and enjoy life and learning. That's heaven to me. And also, Survival 101 in the classroom. Now that it's all down on paper, I'm thrilled that I can share it with you. Behavior Management with Humor is a mega-resource that teaches step-by-step skills for discipline—and then adds tools and strategies to make it FUN. Laughing shakes up our lymph system, and heals our body, mind and soul. It strengthens the immune system, lowers our blood pressure and makes us more present and alert. It’s empowering, rapport-building…AND I can tell you from experience, it’s one of the most powerful tools in your behavior management kit! I REALLY LOVE this, and I think you might, too. If you’d like a Behavior Management MEGA-Bundle—with School Rules, Behavior Management with Humor, Behavior Modification Game Charts, and Behavior Management Callbacks—it’s here. I’m on a mission: to help you feel CALM and CONFIDENT—and ready to laugh—starting on your first day of school. As always, I'm wishing you all the best!

New kindergarten teachers are always asking me for my best tips. Here goes: Be Kind 1) Be nice. Yes, that’s my number one tip. Why? Because I believe that kindness is the most important thing to bring to almost any situation. And in kindergarten? Think about it. Many of your kids are coming to school for the first time. They’re tender, uncertain and scared. Even if they’ve been to pre-K, this is often their first full day, or their first full-on academic year in school. I believe that teaching is instruction AND inspiration. It’s up to the teacher to set the tone, and show kids how nice school can be. So should you smile on the first day of school? Of course! Smile from the depths of your soul, when appropriate. Remember, you’re not just teaching the 3 Rs, you’re teaching social skills, too. If you’re kind by example, you’re teaching the children how to be kind too. After all, you want kindergarten to be pleasant for everyone, including yourself. It’s win-win, all around. If you'd like this free Kinder-Garten poster, it's here. Be Firm 2) Be firm. Sorry to break it to you, but you’re probably in big trouble if you’re ONLY nice! Be nice and also firm. Show the kids exactly what’s expected of them. Show them step by step and have them practice. Give them feedback—thank them when they’re helpful, and gently correct them if needed. Discuss why one way is better than another, so kids internalize the rationale. And accept no less than their best. Please have a little heart-to-heart with yourself. If you're not a born disciplinarian, ask yourself if you'd benefit from the soup-to-nuts course--with word-for-word teacher scripts--what to say, and what to do, starting on the first day of school. It's Behavior Management 101 Plus ++ and it will save you from a world of trial and error. Be Fun 3) Have fun. I’ll repeat: HAVE FUN!!! Hellooo…Kindergarten means child’s garden. Kindergarten is a place to learn through doing, dancing, singing, playing, exploring, creating…and of course thinking. Add plenty of brain breaks and stir. Every time you bring life to your lesson, you’re honoring the spirit of kindergarten. So don’t just teach the writing mechanics (start with a capital, use lowercase, leave a space between words, end with a period...) sing the writing rubric in a song. Don’t just count to 100, have kids dance--or meditate--to a counting song. Let kids make number chart robots, and have kids write or copy a sentence about it. Create bulletin boards that are as creative to look at as they are to make. In short, create a child’s garden. Ready, now? Let's say it three times fast: nice firm fun nice firm fun nice firm fun There! That was easy! If you’re a new kindergarten teacher, you’re entering a wonderful world! If you’d like a mentor's guide, along with step-by-step scripts, rules, posters, printables, songs, and many other resources that you can use all year, take a look at my Kindergarten Creative Mega-Bundle. I think it will help you on your journey. As always, I'll be thinking of you and wishing you all the best!

Have you noticed that more kids wear eyeglasses now, and at a younger age? Computer and TV screens “glue” the eyes, so they don’t move in a healthy way. I teach my kids to exercise their eye muscles. Here’s my eye exercise chant (kids repeat each line): Of course I teach each step first: 1) Hold up a thumb about a foot away from your nose. 2) Look at your thumb, then straight ahead, beyond the thumb as far as you can see. 3) Focus back and forth, about five seconds each. 4) End by gently squeezing your eyes shut. Did you know that you can improve far-sightedness by exercising your eye muscles this way? It's true. So enjoy your computers—and your eye health, too! Here's a free poster of my Eye Health Chant. Enjoy!!

Presidents Day Crafts are the best way for young kids to celebrate. Coloring, cutting and gluing are the way kids absorb facts. After you’ve discussed Presidents Lincoln and Washington, their bios and history… …there’s no better way for kids to reflect, than to play. Play is like dreaming. The subconscious takes over, and facts go deep. Kids can wear a Lincoln or Washington mask, and pretend that they’re chopping wood, leading troops, or giving a big speech. Or they can simply realize that Lincoln and Washington were once kids. And that maybe this new generation of kids will have a president emerge thirty years from now. My favorite book on Lincoln is: Just Like Abraham Lincoln by Bernard Weber. It humanizes Lincoln. Mr. Potts lives next door to our boy narrator. He looks just like Abraham Lincoln. He’s also kind, thoughtful, interesting, and he loves to read—just like Abraham Lincoln. Mrs. Potts makes lemonade to drink, while Mr. Potts tells stories about Abraham Lincoln. Mr. Potts grows a beard. Now he really looks just like Lincoln, and he reads the famous Gettysburg speech at the school auditorium for all the kids. At the end of the book, Mr. Potts is moving away. (This is when all my kids look like they’ll cry.) The narrator wonders what the new neighbor will be like. (He happens to look…Just like George Washington). If you’d like to create Presidents Day Crafts; Lincoln and Washington Masks or Puppets, Lincoln’s log cabin that stands upright, and a Presidents Day Money Bank or Keepsake Box, take a look here.
