The Seat of Wisdom Memento Necklace in Rainbow Obsidian was designed in collaboration with a client seeking to heal a broken heart brought on by the sudden loss of a great love. Working together we agreed upon the key elements she wanted. First Theotokos, the Mother of Christ because she knows the pain of great grief and sorrow and helps to carry us through it. Secondly, was the importance of Saint Michael, who is the Patron Saint of her family. And lastly, is Saint Christopher, the name of her beloved. Please know, we can work with you to create a similar piece based on your current life circumstances and to help facilitate your healing or sacred journey. The double sided Wisdom's Seat holy medal, features Theotokos (the Mother of God) with Archangel Gabriel on the opposite side. Theotokos is another name for the Virgin Mary, and she also represents Wisdom in the Orthodox Church. This is a rare and beautiful medal. It's called Wisdom's Seat because the Madonna is shown in her iconic role as the Seat of Wisdom holding the Christ Child. The image is very similar to the Icon of Mary and the Child Jesus in the Hagia Sophia pictured below. The original medal is from the 1940's and has been recast in bronze and dipped in gold leaf to creat this piece. The reverse side of the medal depicts the Archangel Gabriel, who is known as the Messenger of the God. He works closely with mankind and is the patron saint of communication workers. He is also the angel of strength and protection and awaits to help you facilitate communication - especially with children, parents, teachers, family and friends. It was Gabriel who visted Mary and asked Her if She would carry the Christ Child and be His mother. We selected the following stones based on the healing her heart and psyche were calling for to ease the shock of a sudden loss. We picked Rainbow Obsidian because it is a stone that activates our root chakra and pulls us back down to earth. It's a stone that can be used to help heal a broken heart, provide support for someone in grief, or simply offer up an abundance of love and happiness to someone in need. This stone is here to hold you when you need it most, while also giving you back strength to help overcome these heartaches so that you may begin to heal. It is black with layers of iridescent color. It is named after the prominent ancient Roman, Obsius. Rainbow Obsidian helps one take the downward journey to unexpected Light. For most human beings it is impossible to escape the prison of one's own wounded psyche without going down. This journey into the depths is as amazing as it is necessary. As one descends, one finds the forgotten pieces of oneself that have been left behind at each wounding. KN436 10 1/4” Rustic Sonora Desert Ironwood Knife with Rainbow Obsidian Blade Handcrafted by Danny McBride, the writer of the first three Underworld films, this large, rustic Neolithic knife is constructed from exotic and much sought-after Desert Ironwood (Olneya tesota) that is responsibly sourced from the Sonora desert in Mexico. This piece has fantastic figuring and a wild spot of heartwood that is golden yellow. The wide, serrated blade is knapped from a gorgeous piece of Rainbow Obsidian that is translucent, with cloudy areas of purple, green and bluish hues. It is hafted with black artificial sinew. The style of the knife was inspired by Aztec knives. Overall length, including blade and handle, is 10 1/4”. Weight 7.3 ounces. Any light spots in photo are caused by the light source. I try to take photos under both natural sunlight and artificial lights, so you can see how the color changes accordingly. Many types of wood tend to look more orange or red under bright sunlight. Please note that all hardwoods can change color over time, so storing your knife out of direct sunlight is highly recommended. Please note that I strive to have satisfied customers, but if you drop the blade it could shatter. It is natural volcanic glass, but glass nonetheless. It should also be noted that even though I take the time to source the best materials available, these are natural materials and occasionally there are hidden imperfections that are not revealed until the wood is worked or the obsidian or flint is knapped. I do quality control and if it is something serious I put it aside. That said, it was never my intention for these creations to appear as if they rolled off of an assembly line. Each and every knife is handcrafted and one of a kind. Care: wipe down with lint free cloth. If the finish dulls after handling or fingerprints are left behind, just use a small amount of wax (Beeswax, Carnauba; even car wax with Carnauba), let dry, then hand polish with lint free cloth. DISCLAIMER: These are display knives, so I do not sharpen them as much as the obsidian will allow, as I don't want people getting cut by simply looking at them! Well, touching them. Obsidian flakes are sharper than steel, but the overall blades (unless they were created by blade core technology, as used by the Aztecs, had to be re-sharpened often). This caused the blade to “shrink” with each sharpening. Though the blades were excellent stabbing weapons, they were brittle when compared to flint. That said, these knives are not toys. I would never suggest using an obsidian knife to cut food, as tiny flakes (which, as noted, are extremely sharp) could easily be ingested. Paleo people utilized hide glue and pine pitch for hafting, which was easy to undo by applying heat. These natural glues were messy and quite often unsightly and bad smelling. Therefore, I use steel epoxy, which, unfortunately cannot be removed with heat. This is the primary reason that I cannot further sharpen the blades once they are hafted. The angles needed to sharpen are difficult to hit once the handle is attached and snapping the blade becomes a real possibility. If you have any questions, please just reach out to me through Etsy.
