I had some fun crashing some hives this week! For Diana in Hive 1, Cyndi in Hive 2 and Stephanie in Hive 4. I enjoyed Stephanie's block so much that I think I will be using the same pattern to make a scrap quilt for myself. :) Have a great day! Tracy

I started 2017 with A LOT of quilty goals! I have a long list of WIPs, UFO, quilt alongs, patterns and fabric bundles that I want to play with, as well as some shop samples and designs and customer requests. So, I decided the best thing to do was WRITE IT DOWN! I figured if I write it down and can cross it off I will be more likely to do it. So far, so good. Each month I've got a balance of old projects to complete, quilt alongs to keep up with, customer orders, shop stuff, new patterns and pretty bundles. My January list was long, and except for one project, I got it all marked off. 1. Sweet Love quilt - started and finished in one month. Whoop! 2. Vintage Valentine quilt - top pieced 3. Quilt Alongs - I made progress on my Splendid Sampler, Farmer's Wife, Harry Potter, Orange and Blue quilt and Quarter Square Log Cabins 4. Comfort Quilt - finished and turned in 1 comfort quilt. 5. Bind and Label 3 quilts - Done! Including getting labels on some older quilts. 6. Finish quilting Cade's quilt. Done 7. Stash Bee blocks - Crashed and Mailed 8. Sleeping Porch bundle - quilt top made 9. Pillowcases for Matthew - done and being mailed this week. 10. Rainbow Scrap Challenge blocks - Purple blocks made - plus, butterflies, snails and Fireflies 11. Michael Miller scraps - quilt top made and backing made 12. Eeyore dress - Done and delivered 13. Pixelated Hearts pattern testing - Tablerunner top made 14. Cole's quilt - 112/132 blocks made 15. Sloth Pillow - still waiting on fabric Yay! Thanks for stopping by! Tracy
Get your funk on with Against the Rail. This quilt requires 48 nine-inch squares – 24 of two different contrasting fabrics. The strip of accent fabric adds that awe factor. And, since every other block is turned, none of the angled seams have to match so it is extremely forgiving and a great beginning quilt. 65in x 82i

Recently I've had several people ask me how I bind my quilts. So I thought that this would be a perfect time to show you how I do it:) Yesterday I made a quilt for Dolly and I took pics of my machine quilting and binding process. It's the same way that I bind every quilt or project...no matter the size. I'm no stranger to hand quilting... I grew up around the quilting frames. But because of my design schedule... I usually send my quilts out to be machine quilted. That seems to be the norm now a days and I do love me a beautiful machine quilted quilt! When I have smaller projects such as my new Dolly quilt... I simply quilt them on my Bernina. I cut my backing fabric a few inches larger than my quilt top... around all 4 sides. I cut my batting the same size as my backing fabric. I ALWAYS use a walking foot when I am machine quilting. A walking foot allows the top, middle and bottom layer of the quilt to feed through the machine at the same speed... so that means no shifting... gathering or puckers when quilting. Nice!!! After I have finished my quilting... I quilt 1/8" from the edge to hold it down nice and flat for binding... then I trim the excess batting and backing fabric away. Sometimes I like to add trim in my bindings. For the Dolly quilt...I sewed 1/2" pink ric-rac on the edge. I fold the rid-rac like this on each corner and if there is any ric-rac sticking out past the edges of the quilt... I simply trim it off. Don't worry about those trimmed off edges fraying... they will be within the binding:) When I take my 1/4" seam allowance with the binding..it will look like this. I cut two 2 1/2" x Width of Fabric strips for the binding. For this quilt I will need about 80" of binding. My formula for determining how many inches I need for a quilt goes like this. 1. Measure the length of all 4 sides of your quilt top. 2. Add them together. 3. Add 10"... 4. That is how many inches you will need! *NOTE - if you are binding anything that has a curve at all to it... you will need to cut your strips on the bias!!! I cut the selvedge off of each strip.... And join them together on the diagonal... like this. I trim off the excess... And press the seams open for less bulk around the edge of the quilt. Then I press the whole strip in half with WRONG SIDES together. I unfold one end and fold it down like this... And then fold it back to wrong sides together. I place the raw unfolded edges even with the edges of the quilt.... the fold goes towards the inside of the quilt top. I start by sewing the end I have folded like this.... and I leave a tail by stitching about 2" down from my fold. I use a 1/4" seam allowance and I always use my walking foot when sewing on binding to keep the layers even. I keep sewing until I am 1/4" from the first corner. I lift the foot up ...leaving the needle down and pivot the quilt on an angle like this. Then I sew at an angle off the edge of the corner and clip my threads. I DO NOT CUT MY BINDING STRIP AT ANYTIME. Then I lift the binding straight up... And fold it back down like this. The raw edges are even with the side of the quilt again and I'm ready to sew the binding on the next side of the quilt. When starting on a new side... I simply start at the top... sewing through the folded corner and backstitch at the beginning to secure. I continue sewing all 4 sides of the quilt and do each corner exactly the same as the first one. When I get back to the side where I started... I trim the end on the diagonal ... Making sure that I leave it long enough so that I can unfold the folded tail at the beginning and tuck it inside... like this. Then I simply continue sewing until I reach my first stitches... Then I sew on top of them about 1/2" and backstitch. By tucking the raw edge inside the folded end that I started with... I have a completely finished seam! Then I fold the binding to the back of the quilt and whip stitch it into place. I always start my hand stitching where I started my machine stitching. I do a blind whip stitch... and I fold the binding just past the 1/4" seam line on the back. When I get to the corners I fold them over to the back and sew just to the machine stitching. Then I fold the other side in just past the stitching and stitch them together with 2-3 stitches...like this. I continue in the same way all the way around... Until I get to my first fold in the binding. I also do a blind whip stitch to hold it down and the I knot off. I hide my tail between the layers and trim...just like when hand quilting. And my Dolly quilt is completely bound. And ready to give to Dolly:) Have a quilty kind of day my friends!!! xx Lori

I was rooting through a closet the other day and ran across this quilt, and realized I had never posted pictures of it before. I made it a few years ago, and it is one of my favorites. A menagerie of pups and kitties (two of my favorite things!) -- and sooooo whimsical and cute! (BTW, that bumpy *LUMP* under the upper right hand corner is my own real kitty, Boo, playing hide 'n' seek!) This quilt was SO much fun to make. Using "scrips 'n' scraps" of some of my favorite fabrics, and a piecing method called "paper piecing" or "foundation piecing", it's a little "different" than most of the other quilts I have made. And OH -- no two blocks are the same, and all the critters have little round black beads sewn on for eyes, and the dogs have real button noses! So, wouldya' like to "meet" some of the individual "kids" on the block?! (LOL, no PUN intended!!!) Well, lookie there, even the real fur-kid approves! Actually he and Boo have been trying DESPERATELY to CHEW OFF all the button noses!!! (GAH! BAD Raggies!!!!) ;o) (For additional posts featuring my handmade quilts, please look HERE and HERE. Thank you!) And PS... I have gotten a lot of requests for the book that this pattern is from. Please see "Comments" below for all info. Also, feel free to message me through the "contact" link on the blog's home page with any questions not answered there. ENJOY!

Have you ever heard of Big Stitch Quilting? Someone on instagram saw a quilt that I'm in the midst of working on and suggested I google "Big Stitch Quilting" and so I did! source It's a hand quilting technique that uses big stitches and there are lots of tutorials (and here) all over the internet. There are books, online classes, and entire websites dedicated to the topic. I have to say, I've done lots of Big Stitch Quilting before, but I didn't realize it had a name. I love the way the big stitches look: source source source source source...

Linen Chausses “The Kingmaker” Leg padding with leather arming points If you are sick of the weight of a leg harness and need a break from metal armor, or simply wish to find some variety of protection that still allows you to run unencumbered, padded chausses are the perfect option. They can be worn on their own as light armor, or go excellently under armor to protect you from any points where the metal might rub. The thin padding also allows for a bit of extra impact protection in addition to your armor. Comfort was the most important factor in making these chausses. They are made of two layers of 100% flax linen, with a thin layer of natural batting inside to allow for a bit of padding. The flax linen comes in beautiful bright colors and softens up to be comfortable next to your skin, as well as allowing for a great deal of breathability that will keep you cool in the heat of battle. To further allow for comfort, a round panel of fabric has been taken out behind the knee to prevent the material from bunching and causing pain or difficulty moving. These chausses are anatomically shaped to fit your body like a glove. They have no stirrup under the foot as many other chausses often do, but instead finish at the base of the foot, with the sides dipping down to protect your ankle a little bit as well. This means that they offer maximum coverage as well as being very comfortable. To ensure they are tight to the calf, they have lacing at the back to give you the closest possible fit, as well as durable metal eyelets. You wear these chausses as you would any other pair of split hose – with one on each leg. They are in the style of XIV century style pants, which of course have no codpiece like later style leg coverings, and instead can be pointed at the top to braies or an arming belt to keep them from falling down. Leather arming points have been sewn to each hip to give you the ability to attach your leg armor if you so choose. The edges of these chausses are expertly finished with bias binding, so you can fight knowing that they are solidly constructed and aren’t going to fall apart on you. There are two choices of color patterns, and it’s up to you if you choose to go for something basic or something a little bit brighter. The first option is, of course, a singular color, and the other option is to have a second color on the inside, which will also make an appearance on the bias binding for a pop of contrast. To check how to measure yourself please click here. Please contact us if you have any additional questions.

Quilt for Sale, Handmade Rainbow Colors Extra-Large Throw Size Quilt, featuring Kaffe Fassett fabrics and many others - 12" blocks, each "crazy quilted" with no repeating fabrics, for a total of 180 different fabrics! A true labor of love, created with a fabric collection I have curated over the past 20 years!! Crafted with only high-quality fabrics, and "Warm n Natural" batting (the stuff inside the quilt that makes it have weight & be extra cozy). Completed, ready to ship. I will be happy to discuss with you other colors, sizes, etc - feel free to contact me if you'd like one especially made for you. Measurements: 72x60" (Extra-Large Throw Size) See photo - shown on a Queen bed Front: Features 30 different individual blocks, each one its own little mini quilt, all sewn together to create a work of textile art! Created using 12" blocks: -5 Rows, each 6 blocks wide -Each row is a colorway of the rainbow: 1. Pink 2. Yellow/Orange 3. Green 4. Aqua/Turquoise 5. Purple Lots of colors from light to dark, mix and match easily with your other decor. Back: Brilliant blue & Black "Artsy Swirl" print background fabric, also featured on the edges/binding. Middle: 100% Cotton batting The quilting is done with all different, matching colors of variegated thread. The front stitching does show on the back as well (that's what makes it extra sturdy), so it is not reversible. Every start and stop in the stitching has been secured, and it has been stitched additionally for added security - this quilt was created to last. There may be a slight color variation due to camera and lighting. Recommended care for your quilt: wash with cold water on delicate cycle, hang out to dry or lie the quilt flat. All of my items are made with Love in a smoke free home studio.
*please note – there is now an updated version of this list of links here* Hello all :) Well, both Mel and I have been overwhelmed by, and grateful for, the positive feedback from the Brother…
This time, it has nothing to do with a beetle but with the beatles :p "Octopus's garden" is smaller than the others but it has its 8 tentacles.
