This is a listing for Modified Drunkard Path Acrylic Templates. Both the Pie and Crust template are included. The templates are 1/8" clear acrylic and have a hold for hanging. I'm not going to be piecing this triple sunburst any time soon but it's interesting how many stitchers took on the challenge in the past. Northeast Auctions offered this wonder in pink, points and applique a few years ago. 1856 Source? Elaborate appliqued borders would indicate mid-19th-century style. Nancy Cummins Kaylor from Jefferson County, Indiana. Indiana Project & the Quilt Index. Collection of the Iowa State Historical Society Another said to have been made in Indiana by Mrs. R.L. Whittington, Iowa Project. http://www.quiltindex.org/fulldisplay.php?kid=18-36-199 These last two, a little more austere in the applique, are both thought to date from the last quarter of the 19th century. The pattern has a BlockBase number #3469 although it was not published until the 1970s. You can see the center as a sunburst with two rings around it. Wyoming Project Several examples from 1890-1930 survive. These are certainly graphic. Joanna Rose's collection Turn- of-the-last-century examples usually have nine blocks. Source? The caption for has read that it was stitched by Eliza McCardle Johnson (1810-1876), wife of President Andrew Johnson, but since she died years before the blues were fashionable that whole story is highly suspect. And fewer than 3 rings, but the version with three rings seems to have been some kind of pattern fad. Julie Silber's Inventory Red and '30s green with an ice-cream cone border, clues to a post 1930 date. Here's a BlockBase pattern based on a central sunburst with 14 spokes. Print it out as is for a 15" finished block. A relative---star in the center instead of sunburst---documented in the Arizona project, made in Kentucky in 1937. Arrie Ethel Boggs Wheeler (1889-1942) "offered to piece the circles with tiny triangles if [Emma Wheeler] would provide material. Emma then put it together." Emma's daughter recalled it as made in 1937. So Arrie specialized in the spiky points. Here are all 6 of the blocks I made for my hive in the 5 x 4 Modern Bee. Each person picks colours and then you make 6 of whatever block you like in each person's colours. This block is an adaptation of Megan from Canoe Ridge Creations' tutorial which is here. This one is for Megan, who asked for purple, orange and grey. I am becoming very partial to dark grey backgrounds. The purple and orange look very sharp on the grey. I am totally enchanted with these butterflies. This next one is for Elizabeth who asked for blue, grey and lagoon/peacock on a white background. The lagoon/peacock wing is a bit more peacocky in real life. These are 12" blocks. I am imagining them much larger and meeting corner to corner in a quilt. This next one is the one I showed you before. It is for Christina who asked for kelly green, navy/dark blue and yellow on a white background. Here is Erin's block. She asked for blue, green and grey on white. But not lime green, which is what I have the most of by far. Seems I need to show you each one, thank you for your patience. It was really challenging to pick the fabrics for each person. Now, I have a lot of fabric, but I worry that I have not picked the right shade or that the recipient will be annoyed that there are bits of other colours in there too. This next one is for Kathleen who asked for blue and orange on white. As a member of the Aqua and Orange Bee, I am partial to these colours. Finally the one for me. I picked blue and grey on white. I am happy with any shade of blue, here I tried to avoid too much aqua as the other blocks seemed to have a lot. Today I came home to find a package with the Freebird for Moda fabrics that I won in Judith at Rags to Bags's give away. She sent this from Ireland on September 10 and today, September 27, it is in my hands here in Canada. That's only 17 days to go 3900 miles, 6720 kilometres. There are 7 times zones between my house and hers, so when it is morning here, it is late afternoon there. (By the way, I sent Judith a package on September 13 and she got it on September 21 - even faster service from here to there). I only wish my swap packages could travel as fast as these fabrics did. How to assemble the block...the first timer way! I've been quilting for years, but I've never sewn the double wedding block. It was a learning experience, but with some researching online and some trial and error, I came up with this. Double Wedding Ring Block... You can cut your pieces from a template, but I used the AccuQuilt Go Big cutter from this post. The cutting was so fast and easy with their new die! Lay out all the pieces in a specific color order or in a scrappy look. I picked scrappy. The post is filled with lots of pictures, so come in and see the steps. I sewed one section of the circle at a time...I'm calling these sections the "football shape". I started sewing the top row of the football shape from the purple to the gray piece. I'm writing these instructions with all the details, so if you are an experienced quilter, you can skip over all the parts that are second nature for you. When I first started sewing years ago, I came up with my "thigh sewing" method. It sounds crazy, but it works for me. I'll show you in the following photos. Why on the thigh? Well, it's close by, I can keep track of the fabric and it's like a built in table for me. On a side note, I was going to type "thigh sewer" (as in someone who sews on their thigh), but it's spelled the same ways as "thigh sewer" ( as in the sewer pipe that drains from your house), so I'm going to call it my thigh sewing method. Any who...let's move on! lol The first step in my "thigh sewing", is to stack the pieces one on top of the other from the left to the right. Keep stacking the entire row you are sewing. (This works for sewing rows and rows of squares in a regular quilt too, not just this double wedding ring.) Here's the stack and here's my thigh. I take the first piece off to the left... Then take the second piece and place it right sides together on top of the purple. Match the sides and notches. Sew with a 1/4 inch seam. Chain piece the rest of the pairs. Chain piecing is to keep sewing without removing the fabric or cutting the threads. Just keep adding more fabric pairs as you go...a long chain of sewing. Here the next piece taken to the left... Then fold over the next one, right sides together. Keep chain sewing... then the next piece off to the left ... and the last piece folded over, right sides together. Chain, chain, chain...(can you hear the song in your head)...chain of fools. lol Chain goes to the thigh. Cut the threads between each section. This is were my thigh helps me keep track of things close by and not buried on my messing sewing table. When sewing this block, it's good to have an iron near by. This is just an old board I made years ago...batting and some fabric glued on the back. It can go anywhere, like my dining room on a TV tray. I have to sew in there this winter, because my sewing room is freezing with no heat in there and single digit temps outside. It's even too cold for a space heater to keep up in my sewing room. Iron each pair with seams open instead of to one side as with typical quilting. It reduces the bulk. Now back to thigh sewing...stack second on top of first, right sides together, matching notches. See the seam ironed opened? Iron and sew the last set on top of the first. Right sides together. Iron and this section is complete. I sewed all 8 sections. Now there are only those 8 squares left to sew on. Four of those curved sections have to have the square sewn on each end. I could have done that when I was chain piecing them, but was on a roll when I was sewing the other sections and didn't do it. Just add a square to each end of the curved piece. Now to assemble all the bigger pieces... Take one 6-piece unit and sew it to one of the white center pieces. The center notch will match the center seam of the 6-piece unit. Fold over the white unit, right sides together. Pin the ends and the center. You can pin the whole side if you like. Sew 1/4 seam, easing the fabric in as you go. It's like sewing the curve of a slice of watermelon. but when you iron it out, it lays flat. I ironed the seam toward the white. It naturally folds that way, so I went with it. Next, we will be sewing the white section to the unit with the squares on the end. Match the center of the white to the center of the curved piece. You will also be matching the notched ends of the squares to the notches of the other end pieces. Fold fabric right sides together and pin all the way across, matching edges. Start sewing with 1/4 inch seam on the square piece. At the area where I'm pointing, drop your needle inside that existing seam and pivot a little to continue sewing onto the white fabric. That's hard to explain with the written word, but you'll see when you have it in hand. Here are some arrows for you. Iron seams towards the white middle section. Repeat this with the other 3 sections. Oh...by the way. This WILL happen as a newbie and your seam ripper will be your best friend. Just pick out that sewn in crease.. Open it up to ease the fabric in again and re-sew it. Now to sew the 4 football shapes to the center white piece. The centers will match up ... Place white fabric right side together with one of the football shapes. Pin center seam. This part is crucial... Take the end of each white center piece and mark a little dot at the 1/4 inch mark in the center of the tip. Here it is circled. Now pin that dot over the seam between the last 2 pieces of the football block. Here's that spot marked below Here it is pinned in place. Dot is lined up with the seam. Do the same on the other end. Pin the rest of the curve and sew all the way across. Here's what it looks like all in place. Open up and iron seam towards the center piece. When you add the next football, the notches on the square will match. Add the other 3 football shaped pieces and you are done!! It's my first one, so there is a little ripple in it and it doesn't lay perfectly flat, but that's why free motion quilting was invented...to flatten out all my mistakes!! This was my first time with this block, so if anyone wants to add any more tips and tricks to this tutorial, that would be so helpful for all my readers!! Just leave a comment below!! Wall/Lap is 35 x 45" and Twin is 69 x 90". Quilt uses stitch and flip corners, flying geese and half square triangle blocks. Suitable for more novice quilters. So what do you do when you really don't have time to press, cut and sew a quilt but you want that feeling of completing a project? Dig through the UFO's. This can be just what a gal needs to get a quick finish adrenaline rush. And clear out some much needed space for new projects. The quilt top below had a little over half of the applique stitched in place when I pulled her out. When designing this quilt I loved it but now it just doesn't feel right. If I had to do it over again there would be a few changes. No time for looking back, what's done is done. And this one is DONE, well as done as it can be for now. She still has a story to tell no matter how I feel about the design. Her story is pretty much the same as most of my quilts, a mishmash of fabrics. The background is my go-to background fabric, Kona White purchased at Joann's for 60% off the entire bolt. And the thrifty doesn't stop there. The teal is a Vintage fabric from an estate sale, possibly a linen. The pink gingham is a Goodwill dust ruffle deconstructed, and the flower print is a vintage sheet. The plan is for a scalloped edge and white binding that will follow the curve of the swag applique. Onto the next top. It started out as an Autumn quilt. With plans of scarecrows, pumpkins, vines ....blah blah blah. After two attempts at finishing it I made the decision to just get it done easily with no applique. Again the fabrics are a mishmash. The greens were purchased at WalMart. The navy blue(whole bolt) from a estate sale, probably dating back to the 80's or 90's and I'm guessing. The orange(2 yards left) is also from my vintage stash. Again, I'm guessing, maybe the 1970's and I love it. The navy blue binding is cut, pieced and waiting for the day it's quilted. I bet some of you recognize this little dresden. Before sharing the entire quilt I want to talk about my applique of choice. Turned edge applique, machine stitched in place with Superior Threads Mono Poly thread. After it's quilted and washed the mistake below will not be visible. I LOVE THIS THREAD. It really does what it says it will and more. This is going to be a challenge to quilt. I'm already playing around with an idea or two. Can you find my piecing error below? Some of you may remember my test block blunder. After very little thought the decision was made to leave the mistake in the quilt for character...that's a nice way of saying I'm to lazy to care about fixing it. That's it, they're all folded and tucked away in the needs to be quilted drawer. It feels good to have these tops complete. Home now after a great weekend workshop in Cooma with the Wednesday Piecemakers Two projects in my class - Mariners Madness and Strippy Sampler - one so precise and the other very free-form. Heidi began hers at home so finished a lot more than the others. Isn't it fabulous! All Liberty plus that almost-linen weight grey background. Part of the curved cutting and piecing strip from the Sampler. These could all go in the one quilt tho they are the work of five different students This is the quilt they were working on. In the time frame they got a start on all the strips and they've promised to send me pics to share down the track. Jan's Mariners centre - again it wasn't possible to finish in two days but the 12 students I had all made a good start. Strippy Sampler "bits" Then it was show and tell from my class last year. Lots of beautiful NYB quilts... and a couple of Dahlia finishes too. This is the front but my pic is so off you can't see the quilting... and OMG this was the back - light thread on a dark back. It was absolutely beautiful and I'm hoping it will be entered in this year's Sydney Quilt Show in June. This was my third visit to this lovely group and Janelle , the other tutor, and I have been invited back again next year. You'd think they'd be sick of me by now!
