I’ve been so excited to share this tutorial since I started sketching it out. Tessellating Wall Quilt by UniquelyNancy DEFINITION Tessellations are designs which fill a space, without over-lapping, to form a pattern. They are the simplest kind of jigsaw puzzle in that all the pieces look alike. The shapes in a tessellation can be geometric like squares and triangles, or shaped like animals and people. QUILTS and TESSELLATIONS Many quilts are tessellations. I think a lot of quilters are drawn to tessellations. In fact Jenny Beyer wrote a book I would like to get my hands on called, "Designing Tessellations." Perhaps some of you have read it. There are only 3 regular geometric shapes that will tessellate. 'Regular', meaning that all sides and internal angles are equal. These are the equilateral triangle, square and hexagon. Of course these are very common shapes used in quilts. A simple square tessellation quilt I made as a custom order I have gathered most of this information from a wonderful site devoted to tessellation called Tessellations.org. You could spend a lot of time on their site reading about the history of tessellation, browsing through their galleries, and even designing a tessellation of your own through their simple tutorials. There is also software available that will help in your design. Nouveau Leaf by bbusbyarts Thanks to the featured Etsy shops for their wonderful examples of this fascinating artform. I've always had a fascination with Log Cabin Quilts The simple "picture frame" style of block is usually easy to spot, and I've seen hundreds of variations. That's why I was taken by delightful surprise when I had an up close view of Midnight In The City by Linda Matteotti at the AQG Show As I approached this quilt, I was first drawn to Linda's impressive machine quilting and bright color combinations set against the black background. And then, as I looked even closer I noticed the entire quilt was composed of Log Cabin blocks! Can you see this repeated image in the quilt? Well done! Even the stars in the sky are set at the edge of the Log Cabin square. Linda wrote: "Inspired by *Flavin Glover, this quit is made up of 224 blocks. I designed it using EQ Software. Each log cabin block is foundation pieced." *Flavin Glover is known for her pictorial Log Cabin quilt designs that often feature homes. And Linda's original design won an Honorable Mention ribbon.

I have had a fascination with fabric runs ever since making my first Bargello quilt. In fact, you could say that I am quite passionate when it comes to creating fabric runs. Finding just the right fabric to go between two fabrics can become somewhat of an obsession. Even though I tell my students that there is no such thing as the perfect fabric run there I was running around to quilt shops looking for that perfect pink and my friend thinking I was absolutely nuts. She kept saying, “what you have looks great” and I kept saying, “no, it’s not quite right.”That was a few years ago and now I am not nearly as obsessed with getting the perfect fabric because I’ve realized that it doesn’t have to be perfect. As long as the transition between fabrics allows the eye to flow freely then I consider it to be a successful fabric run.Image Caption: Colourful & Creative Fabric RunsOne of the key elements to creating a successful fabric run is to make sure that the fabrics sitting on either side of a fabric has some of the same colours allowing for a seamless transition between fabrics as they do in the background on this quilt below.Image Caption: Dandelion PuffsFabric runs can be made as precise runs gradating from light to dark as seen in my flower quilts or they can be a bit looser and not quite so precise with larger jumps between the fabrics as in the background of Dandelion Puffs. It all depends on the look you want and what you are making. They can be:Monochromatic (or almost) - using one colour gradating from light to darkComplimentary - using two colours gradating from light to dark while alternating the two coloursMulti-coloured - several colours and often a rainbow of coloursFabric lines - some fabric lines work well for creating fabric runs and have really interesting prints that create wonderful textureImage Caption: Rainbow BricksImage Caption: Urban SunflowerImage Caption: Star BurstAt first, the fabric runs I made were used for making Bargello quilts - mostly wall hangings. But then my brain started swirling and wondering what else could I create using a Bargello and I came up with the idea of creating flowers. Hence my series of Bargello Flower quilts was born. Yes, this meant cutting up the Bargello, after all the effort of creating the fabric run, cutting the strips, making the tube, cutting again and sewing the strips together once again to make a gorgeous Bargello I cut it all up again. I know, isn’t that crazy to cut up that beautiful piece with such movement and texture that I had just spent so much time sewing together? But I did it, it turned out amazing and I never looked back.Image Caption: Bargello SunflowerImage Caption: Bargello PoppyAfter all these years I am still fascinated with cutting up Bargellos - it’s a bit like a box of chocolates you have no idea what you are going to get until that last petal is put in place. It’s always a wonderful surprise.Image Caption: Bargello DahliaImage Caption: Bargello CrocusFabric runs just have a way of sneaking into most everything I create when I’m not looking.Explore fabric choices, angles, and quilting techniques to capture the depth and dimension of your project with me at Layered & Stitched: An Art Quilt Experience, a two-day LIVE virtual event hosted by Creative Spark on May 17-18th. Laura, at Slice of Pi Quilts, stunned the quilt blogosphere when she announced she plans on making 52 charity quilts in 2018! I have been planning on making more charity quilts in 2018, maybe 12, one per month. Then I read Laura's blog and upped it to 24, two per month. Well, with more thought, I'm going to try and join Laura in making 52 charity quilts in 2018! Here's my first: The pattern is "Simple Gifts" from this little booklet by the Modern Quilt Studio: I tried out this new quilting design called "Sashiko" and love the look! All it takes to make this quilt is 4 fat quarters and as my co-worker at Quilt Cove said, who doesn't have 4 fat quarters?! Here's a peek at the backing and binding: The finished size of this quilt pattern is 30" X 36". I'll be donating these baby quilts to Jack's Basket, a non-profit that celebrates babies with Down Syndrome by giving a basket of goodies and info to new parents of babies with Down Syndrome. My sister and my small group will be making some baby quilts, too. We are making them in honor of her daughter, my niece, Gretchen, who is a successful, intelligent, cheerful young adult with Down Syndrome. DD2 has jumped in to help by curating quilt combos. So far she has 30 quilt pulls ready for me to grab and sew. Here are some upcoming baby quilts: What charity do you donate quilts to? Grace & peace!!! ~Nancy Linking up to Friday Foto Fun, Confessions of a Fabric Addict, Thank Goodness It's Finished Friday, Crazy Mom Quilts, Busy Hands Quilts, Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework, Cooking Up Quilts, Slice of Pi Quilts

This weekend's project was a fun mini quilt featuring Kaffe Fassett prints. The idea was to make each print appear to have a shadow or to be floating on the background. Here is the top before quilting. To help the shadow recede more, the darker fabric around each block is heavily quilted while the rest of the quilt is more lightly quilted. The quilting gives the back a lot of texture. Each block finishes at 3" square. The focus prints finish at 2 1/2" square. Overall, this mini quilt finishes at 17 1/2" x 21 1/2". The binding is a neutral print and includes both the background and shadow color. The binding is machine stitched. I love how it looks hanging on the wall. It would also make a great table topper. This was a fun project to make. I will be posting a tutorial for how to make this quilt later this week. This quilt is available for purchase.
