I'm so glad everyone enjoyed Wednesday's post about the Social Justice Quilts of Quiltcon 2019. Of course there were a ton of other, non-SJ related quilts that were so stunning and inspiring. The creativity and skill that went into all of the quilts is obvious. This is only a small sampling of the amazingness I saw - if you're able, I'd highly recommend attending a Quiltcon yourself one day so you can see all of the quilts in up close and in person. It is a truly magical experience. There was a strong contingency of quilts from the Denver area. It was such a privilege to make this Dacha quilt for RJR's "What Shade Are You?" blog. Working with all of these bright fabrics was so much fun! Don't you just love the way that they stand out against the freshly fallen snow? You can find the original blog post HERE on the Quilt With Love blog. I've had several people ask me if I was going to make a pattern for this quilt. That wasn't my original plan, but I decided to throw together a quick tutorial, for those who might be interested in making something similar. Although I love this quilt in solids, I can also imagine this as a scrappy quilt, so I'll give directions for an individual house block, and will also include basic guidelines for making the quilt as it is shown. For each house block you will need the following pieces: House One (1) - 3.5" x 6.5" One (1) - 2" x 2.5" Two (2) - 5.5" x 2.5" Door One (1) - 4" x 2.5" Background Two (2) - 3.5" x 3.5" To make the roof, draw a diagonal line on the back of each background square. Sew on the line, as shown below. Press back to make sure your blocks is square, then trim. Repeat on the other side to make one flying geese...or is the one flying goose? Haha. Sew the small house piece to the top of the door piece. Assemble the block as shown below. Block size is 6" x 8" (finished). You will need 49 blocks to make the quilt as shown. It measures approximately 57" x 72". For this design, I selected the 12 house colors from primary, secondary, and tertiary colors of the color wheel, in deep saturated shades. I used RJR Cotton Supreme Solids, which are listed on the Quilt With Love blog. IMPORTANT: You will need 1/4 yard of each fabric. Please note that 1/4 yard will allow enough to make 4 houses. If you do the math, you'll realize that only gives you 48 houses, so make sure that you have a little extra of one of the colors to make the 49th house. The cutting requirements for the house fabrics are pretty tight, so be mindful that you have a full nine (9) inches from which to cut. FABRIC REQUIREMENTS: HOUSE FABRICS - 1/4 yard - 12 different colors From each solid, cut the following. One (1) 3.5" strip, subcut into: Four (4) 6.5" x 3.5" (roof) Two (2) 2.5" strips, subcut into: Eight (8) 5.5" x 2.5" (house) Four (4) 2" x 2.5" (house) Four (4) 4" x 2.5" (door) BACKGROUND FABRIC - 2.5 yards Nine (9) 3.5" strips, subcut into: Ninety-eight (98) 3.5" squares Nine (9) 1.5" strips, subcut into: Forty-nine (49) 6.5" x 1.5" (horizontal sashing) Eight (8) 1.5" strips (vertical sashing) Note: you may be able to get by with only seven (7) cuts, if you use leftovers from the horizontal sashing. Cut and piece together to fit Seven (7) 4" strips (borders) BINDING - 1/2 yard I hope that you find this tutorial helpful. Below is a tutorial on how to shirr with elastic thread. Before we begin, I must mention that this is a compilation of shirring techniques which I have learned from 3 specific resources: Portabellopixie, Craftstylish, and Heather Ross's book Weekend Sewing. And away we go....... Supplies ~ 1 spool of elastic thread ~ matching thread (must match your fabric) ~ fabric (i used Robert Kaufman's Kona Cotton Celery) ~ 1/4" elastic (optional) Instructions 1. Finish the upper raw edge of the bodice. I like to finish it by making a casing for a 1/4" elastic band. If you have 2 separate pieces (bodice and skirt) sewn together, you can turn the seam allowance into a casing for an additional band of elastic at the waist line. Simply finish the raw edge of the seam allowance and sew the edge of the SA to the bodice. After I have shirred the fabric, I then thread the elastic through the casing. This helps maintain and reinforce the shape of the garment. For now, just make the casing or finish the raw edges. You may want to mark your shirring lines on the fabric before you begin. Its recommended to mark every 1/4" to 1/2". I use my sewing foot to mark it (eyeball it), which works just fine for me and eliminates a step. If you are going to mark your fabric, mark the right side of the garment (visible side of the garment). Also, use tailors chalk, disappearing fabric ink, or some sort of erasable mark. 2. Wind the bobbin by hand with the elastic thread. It is very important not to stretch the elastic thread as you wind it. This is why you must do it by hand. There can not be any tension in the elastic thread. 3. Insert your bobbin into your sewing machine as you normally would. 4. Pull up the elastic thread as you normally would for regular bobbin thread. 5. I like to shirr with my walking foot. If you do not have a walking foot, then a regular foot will be just fine. With the right side of your garment facing up (elastic thread should be on the side that will not be visible on the completed garment), begin to take a few stitches, then back stitch to secure your thread. Stitch from one end to the other. 7. When you get to the end of your first row of stitches, back stitch and clip the threads. Turn the garment and begin sewing your next row the same way you did the first row. Another option (which is quicker) is when you get to the end of your first row of stitches, lift the presser foot, move the fabric over so that the needle is positioned over the next row. Lower the presser foot and needle. Pivot the fabric. Begin sewing the next row of stitches. Always back stitch when you come to the end of the elastic thread and make sure you have enough thread to complete a row. You may notice your first couple of rows don't gather as much as you'd like. Don't worry. As you continue to stitch more rows, your garment will gather more. 8. When you have completed shirring/smocking your garment, spray it with water. You will see your garment gather up nice and tight. Press your garment gently. Do not smooth the iron over the garment. Lightly press the gathers. 9. Thread your elastic through the casing/casings. 10. Stitch the elastic band ends to the garment. That's it! You're a shirr genius! It's here! My Homecoming quilt pattern is now available! . . I designed this quilt as a gift to myself during one of the craziest times of my life. The symmetry and bold shapes reminded me of the comforts of home. After four unexpected and extremely long months of temporary housing, this quilt was all that I could think about. This design symbolizes warmth, comfort and a sense of belonging. . . My initial draft of the design only used two colors (because ya'll know how much I love two-color quilts!) There's just something about the simplicity and character of a quilt that has minimal colors. Its calming in the sense that, your mind doesn't have to figure out how to categorize it. Your eyes don't bounce around as much and you're simply invited to sit and rest on the overall design on the quilt- not so much on the fabrics. They're almost soothing, in a sense. I then decided to spice things up and see what would happen if I added extra colors. For my cover quilt, I knew that wanted to use Art Gallery Fabrics, since their fabrics are just so soft and drape-y. I have recently fallen in love with quilts that have darker backgrounds (have you read my Sage Vintage Lace blog post??). As I was looking through all of their colors, Magnetism really caught my eye. But what to pair with it? Ohhhhh, how I love me some peaches. I was immediately drawn to these four colors. I love that they are slightly similar to each other, but yet they each bring something different to the table. . .
