I had been in a sewing rut, as many of us found ourselves mid-pandemic, and I knew I needed a splash of color and playing with fabric to get back into sewing.
What a year! I don't know that any of us could have predicted how 2020 was going to turn out. If you were like me, back in January you were glad to be rid of

When I made #theglaciertwo I felt a little disconnected from it. Honestly, I did not grow up in Colorado but in a small mid-west farm community. I decided

All the best! ~ Ellen http://americanhomestead.blogspot.com Cutting Requirements: Fabric A: Red 4 - 3 1/2" x 2 1/2" rectangles Fabric B: Blue 2 - 3 7/8" square - cut on diagonal each way Fabric C: Light 4 - 1 1/2" squares Fabric D: Dark 4 - 1 1/2" x 4 1/4" rectangles Fabric E: Medium 1 - 4 1/4" square Sew Fabric B triangles to each side of Fabric A rectangles. Press seams to the outside. Make 4. Sew Fabric C squares to each side of Fabric D rectangles. Press seams to the outside. Make 2. Sew Fabric D rectangles to each side of Fabric E square. Press seams to the inside. Sew above units together taking care to "lock" seams together and pin before sewing. Sew Fabric A/B units to opposite sides of center square. Press seams out. Sew other 2 Fabric A/B units to remaining opposite sides. Square to 8 1/2". Here is my first attempt. I cut the red rectangles too large, I shouldn't quilt before fully awake. Here is a quilt I made a few years ago using the Fort Sumter block. I think I may have to get this one quilted, I quite like it.
When Jodie at Fort Worth Fabric Studio asked if I wanted to sew the sample quilt for the Scrappy Spool Kit....I was like....YES! Patchwork squares plus dots, stripes, and floral fabrics makes me so happy! I love happy sewing! Scrappy Spool Kit Contents (video at end of post) - Kits available at Fort Worth Fabric Studio here Amorette Charm Pack from Wilmington White background & black dot fabric 2 Easy Piecing Grids by TenSisters (2" Finished) Backing fabric (Bonnie & Camille Moda 55161-15) Binding fabric (Bonnie & Camille Moda 55168-14) Scrappy Spool Pattern by Carmen of TenSisters Handicraft - The kit includes ALL the fabric for quilt top, binding, AND backing! Ready for some hints to sew your own Scrappy Spool Quilt - 31.5" X 39.25" Let's get sewing. 1. Per pattern and cutting guide- Cut your fabrics into 2.5" squares. Sew (8) half-square triangles. 2. Place 2.5" squares onto grid interfacing. Note the small gap (that is okay and will be in the sewn seam). I only placed enough squares on the interfacing that would fit on my ironing board. Then iron/fuse into place. Repeat. 3. To attach second section of interfacing- align grid lines and use a washable glue stick (I just used Elmer's school glue stick) to hold them together. Continue adding squares and iron/fuse sections together. 4. Fold and sew with a 1/4" seam. Sew all seams one direction - then snip and sew all seams the other direction. Be sure to watch the videos by TenSisters - here. 5. Look at all the perfect seams that match!!! Yay!!! 6. Quilt and bind. I would recommend simple quilting as there is a bit of bulk with the seams with fabric and grid interfacing. I chose to stipple mine. This Bonnie & Camille bias stripe fabric for the binding is perfect! Time to enjoy your Scrappy Spool Quilt!!!! I wanted to share some extra pictures that shows the super cute binding and backing fabrics that are included in the kit! I loved sewing my Scrappy Spool Quilt! Plus I loved learning a new sewing technique- grid patchwork interfacing- it is magic sewing for perfect seams!!! Be sure to purchase your Scrappy Spook Kit here at Fort Worth Fabric Studio before they sell out! Don't forget the kit includes everything for the Quilt Top, Binding, and Backing! I love a kit that is complete so you can just start sewing! Opening kit video (the kit also includes the backing- which isn't shown in the video) Be sure to follow me on Instagram @mellierc and here on my A Bit of Scrap Stuff Blog for more sewing fun! Have a great day!!! Melanie
Hi there! Today is my stop on the Sharktown blog tour! This Sharktown fabric by Shawn Wallace is so much fun and is the perfect fabric for those shark lovers in your life! :) I loved how this fabric line had a great range of dark, medium and light blues. So I thought it would be fun to do a gradient pattern - so I came up with this fun Stars and Sharks quilt: Stars and Sharks Quilt Kit HERE SOLD OUT 45" x 45" I started with the darkest fabric - which is absolutely adorable! I think this is my favorite print in the collection! I then worked my way out with and used lighter blue each time. This is a super easy quilt - and you can easily whip up the top in an afternoon - which is my favorite part! I love quick quilts! For quilting, I used my walking foot and did 1/2" lines and followed the lines of the star. I love straight line quilting so much - however it is very time consuming! I forgot how much time it takes to straight line quilt. But I love how it turned out and I love the texture straight line quilting adds to the quilt! Lastly, I used a stripe for binding! My binding fairy is the BEST - I wanted to do bias binding - and I LOVE how it turned out! She did a fabulous job! (Thanks mom!) ;) Alright's let's get started! Supplies: Fat Eighth of dark blue shark print 1/4 yard of medium blue shark fin print 1/2 yard of light blue shark print 5/8 yard of water print 2 yards of background fabric 1/2 yard stripe print (for binding) 3 yards for backing Cutting: From Dark Blue Shark: 4 - 3.5” squares (A) 1 - 5.5” x 5.5” Square (D) From Medium Blue 4 - 6” squares (E) From Light Blue (shark) 8 - 6” squares (F) From Water Print 12 - 6” squares (G) From background: 24 - 6” squares (H) 4 - 3” squares (C) 4 - 3.5” squares (B) 12 - 5.5” squares (I) 2.5” strips for border From Stripe: 5 - 2.5” x WOF strips for regular binding -or you can cut bias binding (you will have enough for whatever you decide). I made this pattern into a PDF file if you would like to print it out! Click HERE to download the PDF version I hope you enjoy making this quilt! Be sure to stop by the other blogs in the blog hop for more inspiration! :) Talk to you soon,
Thrifty is nifty! My quilt Purple Patch, Fort Smith was made out of thrifted garments. It's also hand-quilted!
