A couple of weeks ago in our quilt group we each brought 12.5” quilt blocks to donate to a charity quilt. We were also asked to bring the instructions to make the block as well. I've always loved the very traditional “Weathervane” quilt block, so that's what I chose to make. And since I wrote up the instructions for my quilt group, I thought I would also share them here! Here’s what you’ll need: Print 1: 4 @ 4.5” square Print 2: 1 @ 4.5” sq, 4 @ 2.5” sq, and 4 @ 3.25” sq Background: Cut 12 @ 2.5” square 4 @ 3.25” square Step 1: On the 4 (3.25”) background squares, draw a diagonal line from corner to corner with a pencil. Step 2: Place each 3.25” background square RST (right sides together) with a 3.25” print square. Sew about 1/4” on each side of the drawn line. Step 3: Carefully cut along the drawn line. Press HSTs open with the seam allowance toward the print side. Trim each HST to be 2.5” square. You need 8 total (2.5”) HSTs. Step 4: As shown in the photo, lay out 2 HSTs, 1 (2.5”) background square and 1 (2.5”) print square. Sew the top two squares together using a 1/4” seam. Repeat for the bottom two squares. Press seams away from the HSTs. Sew the top and bottom units together, matching center seam. Press seam open. Repeat to make 4 of these Unit A blocks. Step 5: On 8 of the 2.5” background squares, draw a diagonal line from corner to corner with a pencil. Step 6: Place one 2.5” background square RST on one corner of a Print 1 (4.5”) square. Sew on the drawn line. Trim 1/4” away from stitching. Fold open the corner and press. Step 7: Place a second 2.5” background square RST on an adjacent corner of the 4.5” print square. Sew on the drawn line. Trim 1/4” away from seam. Fold open the corner and press. Repeat to make 4 Unit B blocks. Step 8: Lay out block elements as shown in the photo. Sew into rows using 1/4” seam. Press seams of row 1 and 3 towards the center. Press seams of row 2 away from center. Sew rows together, matching seams. Press. And you’re done! Block should measure 12.5” square.
Lately I’ve been making lots of flying geese units for various blocks. There are so many ways to make flying geese, but my favorite way is to make them oversized and them trim them to the correct size

This is my first time posting to the Blogger's Quilt Festival. I have been having such a great time checking out everyone else's posts. Thanks to Amy for putting it all together. Go to Amy's Creative Side to see all the other entries. (I couldn't figure out how to get the button into my blog.) It was easy to pick which quilt to show for the festival. There haven't been many finishes this year, but I just completed the Storm at Sea quilt that I started in 2001! I had been collecting fabrics in shades of blue, teal, green, aqua, and purple for quite a while, but couldn't settle on what I wanted to make. Then I found the background fabric with sea anemones on it--that had to be a sign that it was time to make a Storm at Sea. I worked on this quilt on and off for a couple of years. I wasn't sure how I wanted to finish it, which was the reason it kept being set aside. Then in late 2003, I took a job that had me travelling full-time, which lasted until 2 years ago. I was able to do some quilting on the road, but never got back to this project. I was going through my extensive collection of UFOs at the beginning of 2012, with the goal of getting some of them finished before the end of the year. For some reason, the Storm at Sea was the quilt that wanted to be worked on first. Instead of the usual large square at the center of the unit, I decided to complicate the pattern even more and make that part as a nine-patch instead. To tell the truth, it was just a way to get more fabrics into the quilt, especially some of the lighter colored ones. It was such a trip down memory lane to play with these fabrics again after letting them "age" for over 10 years. At some point I figured out that there were around 3700 pieces in this quilt. Below you can see the different units that I was making for the quilt. The main decision still remaining on this project was the design of the pieced border. I had originally planned on the following design, which gives a scalloped look around the outside. Instead, I decided to go with a row of spiky stars surrounding the center. I like the additional background spaces, and this design brought the quilt to a better finished size for my bed. Center section with quilt blocks sewn together. Quilt top finished--late May 2012 Quilted and bound, October 2012--it's finished! After seeing it on the bed, I decided I need to make matching pillowcases. https://www.ilovetomakequilts.com/out-west-sew-along.html I made my first quilt as a bedspread back in 1979, you can read about it HERE, it wasn't pretty... Since then I've made over 800 quilts. All sizes Most of them published in Single Patterns(Just a few listed) books (see my Author page) as free patterns on my website. and many magazines over the years I consider myself organized, but 'back in the day' my way to organize the quilts I'd completed was to save the books and magazines. For some reason it never occurred to me to put them online. So now 800+ quilts later, I've decided...

Rob & I bought our girls beautiful Wellingtons for christmas & this inspired the following 2 pictures. The wellington fabric in this picture is a piece of a much loved dress of Georgia's which became too worn to wear anymore - she still misses it! ... but at least it lives on in a picture! ... In Alie's case, the more roses the better - you can't really get too many! A nice cup of tea... ... & chocolate cake This is one I started before christmas - a slighlty chunky, lovely christmas dancer! Looking to warmer weather - a cottage in a meadow.
