It was a night of glamour and entertainment for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex at the Royal Variety Performance at the London Palladium. The happy couple are celebrating their six-month anniversary today. A fabulous shot of the Duchess this evening. Wherever Meghan goes she always makes every effort to meet well-wishers. She spent a few minutes shaking hands, thanking people for their kind wishes and receiving gifts for Baby Sussex before entering the Palladium. Jo Wiggins Annand tweeted "My little girl Lucy was honoured to meet Meghan and gave her a gift for the baby." The Royal Variety Performance takes place every year and is held in aid of the Royal Variety Charity. The money raised from the show helps hundreds of entertainers throughout the UK, who are in need of help and assistance as a result of old age, ill-health, or hard times. In particular, the charity assists former members of the entertainment industry living in Brinsworth House, a residential home in Twickenham, which is owned and run by the charity. It is believed to be one of the few charities in the UK that has an unbroken line of patronage from the reigning monarch since George V in the early twentieth century. Queen Elizabeth II is the current sole life-patron of the charity. Meghan received a posy that includes foliage from Brinsworth House garden by Darcie-Rae Moyse. 🎭 This evening The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are attending the 2018 #RoyalVarietyPerformance at the London Palladium. #Variety4Charity pic.twitter.com/Kw7Npz3TbG — Kensington Palace (@KensingtonRoyal) November 19, 2018 A look at Brinsworth House. The stage is set. It has long been tradition for members of the Royal family to make an appearance at the Royal Variety Performance - it dates back all the way to 1912 when the inaugural performance was watched by King George V and Queen Mary. In July 1919, a second royal show was performed. Held at London Coliseum, the show was staged as a 'celebration of peace' and, as the official announcement expressed it, "had been commanded by the King to show his appreciation of the generous manner in which artistes of the variety stage had helped the numerous funds connected with the War". Did you know the event once called for tiaras and jewels? Below, the late Queen Mother in her finery at the performance with the Beatles in 1963. Her Majesty the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh in 1955. The Queen Mother met The Supremes in 1968. In recent times, the Queen has taken it in turns with the Prince of Wales to attend the show. In 2014, the baton was passed down to the younger generation with the Cambridges making their debut at the event followed by Prince Harry in 2015. Tonight marks the first of many occasions Meghan will attend the show. Rebecca English reports: 'Harry greeted Take That like old friends - and it turns out that they are. Lead singer Gary Barlow told Meghan: 'Ask your husband about playing the tambourine of one of our records!' 'Jamaica wasn't it?' the prince interjected. Barlow later explained that the prince had played percussion on Sing, his Commonwealth record commemorating the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.' The evening was hosted by Greg Davies and included performances from Take That, George Ezra, Clean Bandit, the cast of ‘Tina, The Tina Turner Musical’, and Andrea and Matteo Bocelli. There was also a performance by the cast of Hamilton. Indeed, Meghan loves the musical so much, she's seen it three times. The couple helped organise a special show in August in support of Harry's charity Sentebale. There's good footage of the couple meeting performers and taking their seats in the Royal Box in the video below. A fanfare was sounded before the National Anthem, which was played by the the state trumpeters of the Household Cavalry and the Invictus Games Choir. More from the Mail Online: 'In the Royal Box the couple smiled broadly as host Greg Davies welcomed them to their first royal variety performance as a couple - which generated a huge round of applause. They also smiled broadly when he also said the entire audience would like to congratulate them on their 'wonderful news'. 'As I believe they say in Royal circle, one is thrilled that two will become three!' He said. The couple also laughed good-naturedly as they were the subject of Davies' opening skit. He recalled a series of hilarious remarks made by his mother, Pat, 78, a retired school bursar, about the royal family. Their Royal Highnesses will meet a number of performers, as well as Royal Variety Charity and ITV executives, both before and after the show. Meghan laughed and gave a round of applause as he told the audience how his mother had said: 'All of us single ladies were a bit disappointed when he (Harry) got taken. ' 'As if she had a chance!' Davies said.' After the show, Harry and Meghan met performers backstage. Meghan caught up with Take That. The Duchess congratulated Andrea Bocelli on a splendid performance. The Duchess wore an evening look by Safiyaa this evening. It appears to be a bespoke halterneck top and skirt. The look has garnered a mixed reaction on the blog and social media thus far. It's not my favourite look for the Duchess; I think the band on the top detracts from the embellished detail and it doesn't quite work with fit of the skirt. I could imagine the top worn with a pair of fitted black pants or the fishtail skirt with a shorter shimmering top. I am, however, incredibly excited to see the designer in Meghan's wardrobe and to see more designs from her in the future. Meghan was glowing as always; her hair and make up looked fantastic. Although the look isn't completely winning me over, I do love the sense of glamour it evokes and the fact Meghan is experimenting. A look at the back. The look is based on the Malaya Strapless Top. The piece features an asymmetric overlay peplum, all in bicolour leaf sequin. Meghan's skirt appears to be a custom version of the Gayeta Fishtail Skirt. The Telegraph writes: 'For Monday evening's glamorous look, the Duchess turned to a new favourite: London label, SAFiYAA, a brand synonymous with elegant red carpet styles. Meghan's outfit comprises of SAFiYAA's Malaya top, a sequinned bustier with an asymmetric peplum hem retailing for £895, but on second glance you'll note it has undergone a few slight tweaks to make it her own. A fine black strap has been added to the bust, creating a seamless halterneck, and a black ribbon has been wrapped around the waist, creating a flattering empire line, a cut often favoured in maternitywear as it neatly skims over a growing bump. While on the brand's website the bustier is paired with cigarette trousers, Meghan opted for a full-length fishtail skirt which only upped the glamour ante.' Readers will recall the Duchess chose a beautiful blue cape gown by the designer for the State Dinner in Fiji last month. This is Meghan's best evening look thus far in my opinion. London based brand Safiyaa was launched by creative director Daniela Karnuts in 2011. With a demanding career in fashion media, she needed a wardrobe that was sophisticated and polished, without being boring or dated. Searching for pieces that were flattering, combinable and travelled well led her to question why a man could go to London’s Savile Row for bespoke suiting yet a woman had to settle on fixed styles and colours. With a selection of 12 dresses and endless ambition, Daniela began her journey to fulfill her needs and those of women with similar desires as well. Named after her daughter, Safiyaa was started from there. The brand is described as "created for women by women". Meghan wore her Birks Snowstorm earrings. A closer look at Meghan's pumps. The Duchess carried the unidentified black textured clutch she debuted for Hamilton. A very happy six-month anniversary to the Duke and Duchess!
