When I first introduced quarter notes, half notes and whole notes to the kids, I showed the kids the sandpaper notes. They looked at the notes, felt them, and also shut their eyes to guess what they had. Then I showed them the rhythm pizza pieces. We stacked them and talked about how many quarter slices were needed to make a whole pizza, etc. I thought this was a clever, creative way to introduce the topic to the kids. I also (re)introduced the idea of ta, ti-ti and rests. I had them "buy" some candy by choosing a card and telling us the rhythm (we had to repeat after them). Candy bar rhythms I used the fish-rhythm cards below to play a circle game. I set out six cards that we had to sit behind. Then we sang a song: Charlie over the ocean Charlie over the sea Charlie caught a blackbird Could've been me... as one person tapped each seated player on the head. When the song ended, the last person tapped had to chase the tapper around the circle. The tapper had to try to sit down before s/he was caught. Then s/he had to tell us what his/her card was. Here's where you can download the other part of the fish rhythm matching cards (with number values). I'm always looking for drumming activities that are fun and engaging. Reading simple icons for ta and titi, students can play through this entire activity. Designed for students who are just learning to read ta, titi and sh (quarter notes, barred eighth notes and quarter rest), this activity works perfectly as a workstation. Included in this download: 6 pages (4 measures on each page) of rhythms, a chart that shows what the icons mean, a task card to use in the workstation and suggestions for using this product. Although this is set up as a workstation, I often use it with my whole class by projecting it onto my whiteboard. Presents or Coal? Beginner Rhythms is a great Christmas-themed activity to test your students' rhythm counting. This worksheet includes whole, half, dotted half, quarter, and eighth note pairs. Simply print off the worksheet and have the student circle if it's a present (correct) and cross out if it's coal (wrong). I also have a dotted quarter notes and single eighths version in my store! Happy Teaching!!
I saw this activity at a workshop last weekend. The green cups are rests or "shhh" notes. The blue cones are quarter notes. We moved the cones around the cups to create patterns we liked, then "read" the patterns by clapping and resting. First graders really enjoyed this activity and were able to pick up some composition grids and create their own patterns on paper. Rock on First Grade!

Some third graders at GES are building rhythms with Mega-Blocks. Each single block represents one beat. Each note on the single beat block equals one beat. Most blocks have a quarter note, quarter rest, barred eighth notes and 4 sixteenth notes. The other blocks represent other note values including half notes, dotted half notes and whole notes. Students build a row of rhythms and then clap them. Then they add another row and clap both rows. They continue until it is time to move to a new station or they run out of blocks.

This Halves and Quarters Early Finisher Activity set is a great tool to use after teaching this concept. Students are shown a shape broken up into parts. They will have to decide if the shape is broken up into halves or into quarters. Once the concept is taught, students grab their work mat or white board, sit on the rug (or at their desk) and begin working on the related powerpoint/google slide. No fuss, mess, or chaos! ❤️ Just press play and keep them engaged while you help the students who need more individualized attention.

During the recorder unit, I give students a lot of time for individual practice (well, when I say "a lot" I mean 20 minutes max). However, I also like to interject some fun activities to give the students more practice with playing and music reading. Below are some of my favorite activities: You know me, I love Folder Games. This game is called "BAG-IT". In pairs, the students match the pitch letter names to the correct melodic pattern. Then, they play the pattern (they can use the pitch letter names to help). As they play each pattern, they put the pitch letter names back in the bag. When all are put away, the students play each pattern. (Note: For the first time, we complete this activity together in a circle. When students work in pairs, it does get a bit nosy, but I think the extra practice is worth it). Update - I used these folder games with my 3rd graders and we did a rotation like this that worked really well: 1. Lay out the cards (folder is closed) face up 2. Teacher plays one of the cards on the recorder and the students must find it (great ear training opportunity) 3. After a majority of the cards have been played, we matched half of the bags together and then the students matched the other half independently. 4. When all cards are matched, we sing and then play each one before putting it away (back into bag). 5. When all cards are gone, students volunteer to play a specific example while the other students attempt to figure out which one they are playing. You can download this activity (along with CAGE-IT, which uses pitches C, A, G, and E and Earn Your BADGE, which uses pitches B, A, G, E, and D) here: Recorder Folder Games Another activity I use comes from Music K-8 (at my old school, I was lucky enough to have a subscription). The game is called "BAG-OH" and it is a recorder-based bingo game. There are several ways to play it (again, my students are usually in pairs). 1. Teacher plays a pattern and students cover it with a spacer 2. Teacher plays a pattern, students play it back, then cover it with a spacer 3. Teacher sings a pattern, students cover it with a spacer (You can sing on B-A-G or Do-Re-Mi). 4. Teacher sings a pattern, students play it back, then cover it with a spacer. You can get the game here: Bag-Oh I haven't tried this idea yet, but I think it would work (I've done this with rhythm and solfege patterns). Using the B-A-G Recorder Patterns , print out the slides (2 of each pattern) and glue them onto construction paper (fold it in half "hamburger" style so that it will make an upright tent on the floor). You'll need to glue the same pattern on each half of the construction paper. Then, give each student a pattern and have them sit in a circle. They need to set up the pattern so that one side faces the inside of the circle and one side faces them. I have a couple ideas for gameplay: `1. The teacher plays a pattern and the students must identify who has that pattern. Then, everyone plays the pattern. 2. The teacher plays a pattern and the student who has that pattern plays it back. Then, that student plays another student's pattern. The game continues. After a few times of playing, you could make it a bit more competitive: if a student doesn't recognize their pattern being played, or doesn't play their pattern correctly, they are "out".
