De lucht die weerkaatst op het water of de weerspiegeling van een object in glas. Met reflecties maak je de foto vaak interessanter, geef je het beeld een extra dimensie of versterk je de compositie. Maar hoe fotografeer je een reflectie? En waar moet je allemaal aan denken om de weerspiegeling goed vast te leggen? Dat lees je in dit artikel! Laten we eerst even stil staan bij waar je reflecties overal tegenkomt. Door de mogelijkheden te kennen, zie je de reflecties waarschijnlijk sneller. En als je ze beter opmerkt, betrek je ze gemakkelijk in de compositie van je foto. Reflecties in water De meeste reflectiefoto’s worden (gok ik) gemaakt met water. De weerspiegeling kan in een groot meer zijn op een windstille dag, maar net zo goed in een kleine regenplas op straat. Water geeft ontzettend veel mogelijkheden om reflecties vast te leggen, zoals je verderop in het artikel ook zult zien. Als je geen zin hebt in een zelfportret, dan kun je met het juiste standpunt jezelf (en je camera) prima buiten beeld houden. Zolang het geen spiegelpaleis is tenminste... ;) [caption id="attachment_14094" align="aligncenter" width="700"] Het leuke van twee (of meer) spiegels tegenover of onder een hoek ten op zicht van elkaar; je kunt jezelf vermenigvuldigen.[/caption] [caption id="attachment_17627" align="aligncenter" width="700"] Is de linker- of de rechterkant van de foto een reflectie in de spiegel?[/caption] [caption id="attachment_12959" align="aligncenter" width="700"] Een cliché vakantiefoto: een reflectie in spiegelende glazen van een zonnebril.[/caption] Reflecties in glas Afhankelijk van de lichtval en hoek waarin je fotografeert, vind je ook in glas subtiele reflecties. De reflectie maakt het beeld interessanter als je zowel ziet wat er achter het raam gebeurt, maar ook ervoor (of eigenlijk: achter jou) Dit geeft de foto een extra laag. Tegelijkertijd maakt het de foto ook complexer; de kijker heeft langer de tijd nodig om te zien hoe het precies zit. Ook bij wolkenkrabbers en gebouwen met (getinte) ramen zie je vaak reflecties van de lucht of andere gebouwen. Dit werkt erg goed voor architectuurfotografie. Je ziet de buitenkant van het gebouw, de reflectie van de taxi’s (en mijzelf 2x!) in het glas én je kijkt deels door het glas en ziet dus ook mensen binnen staan (rechtsonder).[/caption] [caption id="attachment_17628" align="aligncenter" width="700"] Hoeveel lagen heeft deze foto?[/caption] [caption id="attachment_17641" align="aligncenter" width="465"] Reflectie in de wolkenkrabbers, New York.[/caption] Reflecties in metaal Het meer metaal glimt, hoe duidelijker de reflectie van de omgeving. Je ziet bijvoorbeeld de weg in de chromen velgen van een auto of jezelf in een kerstbal als je de kerstboom fotografeert. Is het (nep)metaal gebogen, dan vervormt de reflectie. [caption id="attachment_15753" align="aligncenter" width="700"] Een zelfportretje![/caption] Reflecties bij gladde oppervlakken Andere glanzende oppervlakken, zoals gladde tegels of gelakte vloeren, weerkaatsen ook. Voor deze reflecties moet je misschien iets meer je best doen dan bij water of glas, maar vaak zijn ze wel de moeite waard. Kijk hierbij niet alleen maar naar de vloer, misschien zie je een weerspiegeling in een deur of op de bovenkant van de piano. [caption id="attachment_17630" align="aligncenter" width="700"] De gladde tegels weerkaatsen het licht.[/caption] Kijk eens om je heen. Ja, nu.. terwijl je dit leest. Zie je in je directe omgeving iets wat reflecteert? Ik durf te wedden van wel! Waar moet je staan om een reflectie te fotograferen? Oké, je weet nu waar je reflecties kunt tegenkomen. Nu is het belangrijk om te weten waar je moet staan om de reflectie goed te fotograferen. Misschien herinner je de natuurkundelessen nog. "De hoek van inval is gelijk aan de hoek van weerkaatsing.". Als je een plas water recht van boven bekijkt, dan zie je jezelf. De regenplas is dan net een spiegel. Doe je vervolgens een paar passen naar achter en kijk je schuin op het water, dan zie je niet wat recht boven de plas is, omdat de invalshoek is veranderd. Je ziet nu wat er schuin achter/boven de plas staat. [caption id="attachment_17734" align="aligncenter" width="700"] De hoek van inval is de hoek van weerkaatsing. Door het lage standpunt zie je de reflectie van het gebouw in de verte.[/caption] Heb je een reflecterend oppervlak gevonden? Loop er dan rustig omheen. Sta eens dichtbij en dan weer verder weg, kies afwisselend een hoog en laag standpunt, net zo lang tot je de mooiste reflectie spot. Wat zie je in de reflectie? Een reflectie is dus de weerkaatsing van licht. Een lichtbron, zoals een lamp of de zon, zie je zelfs op de minst spiegelende oppervlakken nog terug. In water zijn de reflecties vaak het duidelijkst als de zon ook op het onderwerp schijnt. Donkere objecten zie je minder snel, tenzij de lucht licht genoeg is, want dan krijg je een silhouet in de weerkaatsing. Zoek voor de reflectie naar interessante elementen die iets toevoegen aan de foto. Het straatbeeld, (delen van) het landschap, iemand die voorbij loopt, een bijzonder gebouw? [caption id="attachment_17634" align="aligncenter" width="700"] Het rode huis geeft een mooi contrast met het blauw van de lucht. Het water is niet helemaal stil, maar reflecteert alles wel heel duidelijk.[/caption] [caption id="attachment_17735" align="aligncenter" width="700"] Deze foto werd net als die erboven gemaakt bij het Inlemeer in Myanmar. Het water is hier meer troebel en een beetje lichtbruin. De reflectie komt hierdoor minder goed over.[/caption] Alleen een reflectie van de blauwe lucht in bijvoorbeeld water is meestal niet zo sprekend. De reflectie van de lucht wordt al een stuk boeiender als er bijvoorbeeld mooie schapenwolken in de lucht hangen of de hemel verkleurt tijdens een zonsopkomst of zonsondergang. [caption id="attachment_13413" align="aligncenter" width="700"] De mooie kleuren van de lucht tijdens zonsopkomst reflecteren in het water.[/caption] [caption id="attachment_17654" align="aligncenter" width="700"] In deze foto zie je duidelijk dat lichte objecten (in dit geval: de wolken waar de zon op schijnt) het eerst zichtbaar worden in de weerkaatsing.[/caption] Reflecties voor interessante composities met symmetrie en herhaling Fotografeer je een object en de reflectie ervan samen in één foto, dan creëert dit een bepaalde herhaling of symmetrie. Dit versterkt de compositie. [caption id="attachment_17635" align="aligncenter" width="700"] De reflectie maakt deze foto bijzonder.[/caption] [caption id="attachment_17639" align="aligncenter" width="700"] Een subtiele reflectie van onze hond JJ.[/caption] Let ook op de hoogte van je standpunt. Door je camera dichter op het reflecterende oppervlak te zetten, krijg je meer symmetrie in beeld. De volgende situatie laat dat goed zien. Bij de linkerfoto zie je de weerkaatsing van de tempel in de tegels, maar deze is onderbroken omdat een deel van de tegels niet glanzend zijn. De tweede foto maakte ik terwijl ik plat op de grond lag. Door het lage standpunt en de groothoeklens loopt de reflectie nu helemaal door en heeft de foto meer symmetrie. [caption id="attachment_17631" align="aligncenter" width="700"] Links: de reflectie wordt onderbroken door de witte tegels, die het licht niet weerkaatsen.Rechts: door de camera dicht bij de grond te houden, geeft de reflectie meer symmetrie aan de foto.[/caption] [caption id="attachment_13796" align="aligncenter" width="700"] Op dezelfde manier is deze reflectie van het Louvre in Parijs gefotografeerd. De camera hield ik een paar centimeter boven de natgeregende rand van de fontein.[/caption] Fotografeer je onderwater, dan krijg je ook reflecties als je - met het juiste licht - juist vlak onder het wateroppervlak zwemt of snorkelt. [caption id="attachment_17653" align="aligncenter" width="700"] Reflectie op het wateroppervlak.[/caption] Spiegelingen in het water Voor een duidelijke spiegeling is het belangrijk dat het water niet (teveel) stroomt en het windstil is. Dit laatste is meestal aan het begin en het einde van de dag. [caption id="attachment_17652" align="aligncenter" width="700"] Het water in het fjord was 's ochtends spiegelglad. Zo mooi![/caption] Daarbij geldt; hoe hoger de objecten die je fotografeert, hoe meer je in de reflectie in het water terugziet. Bergtoppen en bergmeren zijn daarom een geliefde combinatie! In het artikel over berglandschappen fotograferen vertel ik er meer over. [caption id="attachment_17648" align="aligncenter" width="467"] Hoe hoger de onderwerpen die je fotografeert, hoe meer je er van terugziet in de reflectie.[/caption] Stromend of golvend water is overigens niet ‘fout’, je kunt nog steeds gave weerspiegelingen vastleggen. Het geeft gewoonweg een ander resultaat omdat de reflectie bij een golf vervormt. Maak daarom in zo’n geval minimaal drie of vier foto’s, en kijk bij welke beweging de reflectie het mooiste uitkomt. [caption id="attachment_17636" align="aligncenter" width="700"] Reflectie gefotografeerd met m'n iPhone.[/caption] Wie met een boot over stilstaand water vaart, creëert zelf een golfbeweging. Op de grens tussen vlak en golvend water krijg je bijzondere vervormingen! Kijk per keer of je deze wel of niet in de foto wilt betrekken. [caption id="attachment_17637" align="aligncenter" width="700"] De reflectie wordt 'verstoord' door de beweging van de boot. Zelf vind ik het de foto wel iets grappigs/extra's geven, omdat je hierdoor langer naar de foto blijft kijken.[/caption] [caption id="attachment_17640" align="aligncenter" width="700"] De golven van het voorbijvarende schip zorgt voor een coole vervorming van de reflectie van de boom.[/caption] Bewegend water met een lange sluitertijd voor zachte reflecties Een andere optie om een reflectie te fotograferen in water is door een sluitertijd van enkele seconden in te stellen. De bewegingen van de reflecties in het water lopen daardoor in elkaar over en de weerkaatsing wordt zachter. Dit maakt de foto vaak ook een stuk rustiger. [caption id="attachment_17649" align="aligncenter" width="700"] Links: sluitertijd van 0,4sRechts: sluitertijd van 6s.Door de langere sluitertijd is de reflectie bij de rechterfoto mooi zacht en rustig geworden.[/caption] Bij avond- en nachtfotografie krijg je op dezelfde manier in de reflectie de langgerekte lichtstrepen mooi recht en minder druk. [caption id="attachment_15086" align="aligncenter" width="700"] Hoe langer de sluitertijd bij nachtfotografie, hoe zachter en 'rechter' de strepen van lichtbronnen worden in het water.[/caption] Trucje: foto 180 graden Een trucje dat je geregeld ziet bij reflectiefotografie is het op z’n kop zetten van de foto. Of eigenlijk: de foto weer ‘recht’ zetten. Door de foto 180 graden te draaien zie je juist alleen de reflectie als 'normaal'. Je doet dit in Lightroom door bij de Loepweergave in Bibliotheekmodule (sneltoets E) de pijltjesknop onderin twee keer te gebruiken. Of door in de filmstrip met je rechtermuisknop op de foto te klikken en twee keer linksom roteren (of rechtsom natuurlijk) aan te klikken. In Photoshop draai je de foto door in het menu te gaan naar Afbeelding > Afbeelding Roteren > 180 graden. [caption id="attachment_17236" align="aligncenter" width="700"] Door de wolken in de reflectie, past het goed om de foto op z'n kop te zetten.[/caption] Ik pas dit trucje vooral graag toe bij reflecties in regenplassen op straat. Ik fotografeer die het liefst als het weer opgeklaard is na een regenbui. De blauwe lucht en het zonlicht op de gebouwen geven dan een mooi resultaat. [caption id="attachment_17646" align="aligncenter" width="700"] Straatbeeld in Sevilla, gefotografeerd in een waterplas en 180 graden gedraaid.[/caption] [caption id="attachment_17645" align="aligncenter" width="467"] Foto is 180 graden gedraaid voor een cooler effect.[/caption] Bij bovenstaande foto zie je, dat het onderwerp dat je in de reflectie terugziet, niet altijd ‘normaal’ op de foto hoeft te staan. Soms is het veel boeiender om juist alleen te focussen op de reflectie. Op die manier breng je in feite in beeld wat zich buiten het kader van de foto afspeelt. Scherpstelling bij reflectiefotografie: waar focus je op? Fotografeer je het onderwerp en de reflectie ervan in één beeld en heeft je foto veel scherptediepte, dan komt het meestal niet zo nauw met het scherpstelpunt. [caption id="attachment_17647" align="aligncenter" width="700"] Bij deze landschapsfoto heb je veel scherptediepte. Door het scherpstelpunt op de bomenrij te plaatsen, heb je zowel de berg als de reflectie scherp in beeld.[/caption] Wil je alléén een reflectie fotograferen, bijvoorbeeld in een waterplas, en fotografeer je van dichtbij? Dan is de scherptediepte vaak kleiner. In dat geval plaats je het scherpstelpunt het beste in de reflectie zelf. Meestal lukt het je camera om direct op de weerspiegeling scherp te stellen. Maar als dit niet lukt, dan is het overschakelen naar manuele focus een oplossing. [caption id="attachment_17643" align="aligncenter" width="700"] Bij deze reflectie had mijn camera moeite om te focussen, omdat de reflectie in de plas al een beetje troebel was. Daarom koos ik voor handmatig scherpstellen. De grond is onscherp omdat dit niet in hetzelfde scherptedieptegebied valt.[/caption] [caption id="attachment_17650" align="aligncenter" width="700"] In de reflecties zie je de masten van zeilboten.[/caption] Polarisatiefilter: tegen en vóór reflecties Wie een polarisatiefilter heeft, weet waarschijnlijk dat dit filter gebruikt wordt voor z’n unieke kwaliteit dat het reflecties vermindert in de foto. Storende reflecties, bijvoorbeeld als je door een raam fotografeert, kun je hiermee wegfilteren. Maar wist je ook dat je met een polarisatiefilter reflecties juist kunt versterken? Als je het filter de ene kant op draait, dan kijk je (bij de juiste omstandigheden) juist beter door het water/glas heen - je vermindert de reflectie van de lucht op het water. Draai je het filter verder, dan zorg je juist dat je alleen het licht van de weerkaatsing vangt. Probeer het eens uit! Welke instellingen voor het fotograferen van reflecties? Het hangt heel erg van de omstandigheden af welke instelling je kiest voor een reflectiefoto. Sommige foto’s in dit artikel zijn bijvoorbeeld gemaakt met ISO 200, anderen met ISO 1600. Ook de sluitertijd en het diafragma lopen uiteen. Wat het belangrijkste is om te realiseren, is dat bij een reflectie in water, de lucht vaak lichter is dan de reflectie in het water. Je wilt waarschijnlijk niet dat de lucht overbelicht raakt, omdat je dan alle (kleur)informatie en structuur verliest. Stem daar dan ook de belichting op af. Wil je meer weten over welke situatie vraagt om welke instellingen van diafragma, sluitertijd, ISO en lichtmeting? Dan is deze online fotografie cursus iets voor jou! [caption id="attachment_17644" align="aligncenter" width="700"] Je ziet dat de lucht in deze foto een stukje lichter is dan de reflectie in het water. Dat is niet erg, behalve als de lucht helemaal wit was geworden. Dan mis je namelijk wat er gereflecteerd wordt.[/caption] Goed... dat waren een heleboel reflecties! Ga je vanaf nu meer opletten op de reflecties tijdens het fotograferen? Pas wel op hoor, want het fotograferen van reflecties is soms haast verslavend ;)
