Mixing colors with light refraction, or when science meets fun! We are not scientists at all, but it doesn't mean that we are not curious. Actually, we are very curious, and that is why we did a little experiment and lots of observation. We tried to make hypothesis as why it happens. First, we filled with water the plastic cups and added a few drops of yellow, red and blue drops of food coloring. Then, we brought the cups on the window sill putting the red and blue cup on the back and the yellow in the front. What happens? Wait.. Oh! I see orange on one side and I see green on the other side! But why? Why does it show up on the opposite sides of the glass?! Que ce passe t-il? Oh! The color blue and the color yellow give the color green, but because of the light refraction phenomenon, the green color is seen on the opposite side of the cup. The red and yellow give the color orange, but instead of seeing the color orange in front of the cup, we see it on the opposite side. The refraction of the light is an optical illusion where the light bends. It is the change in direction of the rays of light as it moves past a boundary, for example here, when light crosses through the water, it is refracted and sends the rays in the opposite direction. It was such a fun and educational experiment! We left the cup on the window sill because the colors are gorgeous in the natural light!
