Professor Sprout This weekend is Comic-Con here in Tulsa. I will be going as Severus Snape. Two of my friends are going as well, dressing up as other characters from Harry Potter. One friend will be wearing the Molly Weasley costume and my other friend will be wearing Professor Sprout. The Sprout costume is making its debut. I just got finished with it last night. I will be posting more pics of the three of us in our HP attire. It's looking good. When I took this I needed to hem it and add the pockets. All the accessories that will go with Sprouts costume. The Mandrake was crocheted by me from a pattern purchased on Ravelry.com. The collar is a paisley material with tassel and fringe detail. The wand is a Hermione wand. I didn't know what Sprout's wand was. It has a pretty vine detail and thought it appropriate for Sprout. And then the awesome hat. The hat is fashioned over top of an existing straw hat. It has attached earmuffs. Sleeve detail is appliqued pieces cut from an antique table cloth. Two part pocket added. Fully lined. Detail on the sleeves. They are open under the arm. Attached from front yoke to back yoke. Decorative tie is approximately at the elbow. I have had this brown fabric for years. I can't remember exactly what it is. I think it is a wool blend. The lining is cotton.

Deciding that Ocean should be a mandrake made my costume a no-brainer. A mandrake needs Professor Sprout to take care of it. And she's a rather neglected character when it comes to dressing up. Professor Sprout worked with plants so I tried to keep the fabrics rustic and the colors earth tones. And I tried to do this without actually buying many supplies. I bought the hat, pink fluffy material, fake leaves, and brown fabric in the form of a queen size flat sheet for the robe. The costume pieces: Shawl: The pictures I consulted showed that Prof. Sprout wore a shawl of some sort around her shoulders. I was trying to use what I had, so I made one out of an old wool sweater I found at a thrift store ages ago. When I bought it I ran it through the wash a few times to felt it, but then stuck it in my stash to await the perfect project. I thought it worked well, though it was itchy, so I added some detail around the neckline with a scrap of drop cloth fabric I had sitting around. I also used a few pieces of yarn to bulk up the tie portion, and I hot glued some fake leaves from the dollar store for decoration. Dragon Hide Gloves: I hot glued small pieces of pleather (left over from last year's Star Wars costumes) to a worn out pair of gloves. It did make them hard to pull on, but I thought the effect was cool. I'll share more details in another post where I talk more about how I made all the accessories. Wand: I made my wand just like I did Sunshine and River's- more details to come in the accessories post. Boots: I just wore brown boots I had. Gardening shoes would have worked as well, but my gardening shoes are my hiking boots or my pink polka dot rain boots, so they were a no-go. Skirt: I wore an earthy green corduroy skirt from my closet. Mandrake: Ocean was my mandrake this year, but I can see myself using this costume again and making a mandrake out of a doll and carrying that around. Shirt: I wore a long sleeve white button up from my closet. Robe: I made my robe like the kids', except mine has gathers in the front to make it fuller. I also added pockets to the front (per the reference pictures) and they were handy for storing all my stuff while at the party. I used a queen size flat sheet for the outer layer of the robe and used a dark brown flat sheet from my stash to line the robe. The dark brown sheet had been used for something else and had some holes in it, but I figured if anyone saw them they'd just make it look more rustic :) Pink Fluffy Ear Muffs: In the book, Prof. Sprout ends up with the pink fluffy earmuffs because no one else wanted them. They don't show this in the movie, I don't think, which is a shame. I found some bright pink fluffy fabric and made my own ear muffs- details to come in the accessories post. They're actually attached to the elastic that is holding the hat to my head, and are only kind of covering my ears. Witches Hat: I used a dollar store witch hat as the base and covered it with fabric leftover from making Sunshine's Padowan costume two years ago. I added a few fake leaves for decoration and some elastic to keep it on my head. More details to come in the accessories post. My last batch of D*C costume photos. Enjoy! He made the gun himself! Me: [checking picture on camera] "Awesome." Him: "I know I am, thanks." Now THAT is a *fantastic* costume from a *terrible* movie. (Hellboy 2) I like the Gypsy-vibe on this bounty hunter gal. Pretty details. Recognize Leia? She was at the Star Wars Celebration, and was also Buttercup in the parade. The light saber was part of his armor. Nifty. Codex! Apparently there was a family reunion at D*C this year: And as you can see, they were really flipping their lids. [bah-dum-BUMP] Something tells me this next trio is big trouble: Even Pedobear made an appearance: The other side of his sign read, "Free Hugs." Adorable Fiona: I promise her face wasn't actually glowing; someone else's flash went off just as I took this. :) Check out her feet! And now for some baddies: I think these are the same two booth babes from last year: John and I joked about how miserable they seemed then, too. :) They're supposed to be horses: See? They really didn't seem happy, though, standing around and posing. I guess that's the difference between fans and those there just to promote something. (Though to be honest, I still don't know what they were promoting.) Here they are last year: Here's someone who WAS happy to be there, though: This guy was a blast to watch: he never stopped grinning, and he sauntered around with a real spring/happy dance in his step. People like this are why I love conventions. These Splicers had their posing skills down pat. Really great. There was a *huge* crowd jostling around here. I consider any picture that came out in focus and without an elbow in it a victory. That goes double for this next group: There is so much epic awesomeness here, I can barely contain myself. That's King Arthur banging a coconut in the background. And the lady with the carrot for a nose? A WITCH!! Another shot of the group: I spy the holy hand grenade! And the white rabbit has really. pointy. teeth. Run away! How about some Shatner Action Figures? Epic. Totally Epic. And next to them: Life in plastic: it's fantastic. And that's it for my D*C costume collection! Stay tuned now for the steampunk exhibition, fashion show, and then a last bit on some of our experiences and encounters at the con. And then I shall collapse. And get back to my office remodel. And geek crafts and stuff.

Last weekend Universal held their annual Harry Potter Celebration, a special event included with regular admission. Though it's not exactly packed with new activities, the Celebration does include a great cast Q&A, a "Sorting Hat Experience," and a special Expo area filled with promotional items and movie props. The best part for me, though, are the guest costumes. Unlike party-pooper Disney, which recently banned costumes on anyone over age 14, Universal actively encouraged Potter fans to dress for the occasion - with a few "guidelines," of course: The rules were mostly common sense stuff: no face coverings, nothing offensive, and if you carry a homemade wand, it can't be too pointy. (These are all my paraphrases, of course.) I'll be covering the events portion of the weekend - including the fan-organized tributes to Alan Rickman - in a future post. But for now, costumes! The Weasley's have never been more adorable. In fact, these two are in my top favs from the whole weekend. (I decided to give my pics a vintage vibe with the editing, btw. It just felt right.) A dapper witch and a Blue Cornish Pixie! Hee! (Those ears are faaabulous.) A quidditch player and a reporter for the Daily Prophet: The reporter had a press badge on her hat, and a custom skirt covered with Daily Prophet articles! This group had their own Dobby and magical supplies cart: I was delighted to see two or three Lion-Head-Lunas over the weekend: And here's the Snape-in-Neville's-grandmother's-clothes who REALLY stole the show: He put on the same stunned expression for every photo, which was hilarious. I hate to admit it, but I'm stumped on this mashup: He looks like he's dressed from Assasin's Creed, but her hair thingies are totally Avatar, right? Help! These two gents grabbed John to be in the picture, too: Don't they look the picture of two wizards out for a pint? Ahh, I love it. (Btw, if you "get" John's t-shirt, please tell him in the comments. We made it ourselves, and then he was convinced it just confused people. I say more people understand "the rest" reference than he thinks. PROVE ME RIGHT, GUYS.) Gender-swapped Dumbledore: And can we stop for a sec to appreciate the age range of fans in costume? I'm pretty sure there were more people over thirty dressed up than under! Gah, that makes me happy. This lovely witch made her own custom robes: Keeping in character, this Slytherin prefect was a bit annoyed when I asked his group for a photo: He had a gorgeous velvet vest on, though. Stylin'. Another Dumbledore with Luna: I wish I'd taken all my costume shots in Diagon Alley - it's the only place where I don't want to crop the background! Rowena Ravenclaw with a stylish Narcissa and Bellatrix: I spotted some familiar faces from Leaky Con, including this girl who dresses as the Snitch: Her face is metallic gold and she's wearing a bald cap. Now that's commitment! Another awesome Lion-Head-Luna - this time in Quidditch gear: And a fun couple beside us at the cast Q&A: This fellow had his own plush Mandrake baby: And so did this Professor Sprout, who had a crocheted Mandrake purse! Oooh, she's friends with Delores Umbridge?? SAY IT AIN'T SO, PROFESSOR. Two Epbot readers recognized me on Saturday, which was fun and unexpected. The first, Jen, spent most of the day with us, and here's the other, Shawna: ...as Narcissa Malfoy, with her kids as Luna & Draco. She found us during the Alan Rickman tribute. More on that in my next post. Presenting the world's cutest Dobby: THAT HAT!! And she's carrying a book with a sock in it! More awesomeness: a gender-swapped Scamander from the upcoming movie, Fantastic Beasts: Her coat is embroidered with four different animal outlines - I think that's the peacock? Or maybe the dragon. Anyway, so pretty. Here's a reference shot of Scamander: Cool, right? Arg, I'm so bummed my focus went screwy on this next one: ... because that's the best Harry & Ron I've seen! (And a young Lupin beside them!) In fact, those two were SO good that Universal's security told them to stop posing for pictures. o.0 They weren't the only ones being harassed, either; these three had to hide behind the building before I could take their photo: The two on the left are Cosplay Craziness, if you want to follow them on FB! Great couple. (And yes, of COURSE Barty Crouch also cosplays as The Doctor. ;)) Afterward John talked with security about the situation, and it seems they were only concerned with traffic flow and having other guests mistake the cosplayers for Universal employees. Understandable concerns, but it's still not cool to make people afraid to stop for any photos. K, moving on... These ladies had the BEST feathery capes: Hedwig and Fawkes! Hedwig had aviator goggles on her head, and Fawkes' feathers were metallic red and gold. Shiny. Another wizarding family and a Beauxbaton's student: Oh! And two more of my top favorites: They made everything they're wearing, and even the cape linings were gorgeous. Look at his hat!! Plus his watch chain is made of gears, for a slightly steampunky touch. I approve. I found the four (femme) House founders inside the Expo: I had to use the flash - but that just makes it more dramatic, right? They're all stunning, and I love how they each posed in character. I also found a second Snape-in-Neville's-grandmother's-clothes: ... and his expression is even more hilarious. Ha! And finally, two ladies who made the most incredible Snape and Sirius: Sirius is even holding a small Peter Pettigrew, in Scabbers form. It was dusk when I took this, and I love the moody feel of the Alley around them. Hope you guys enjoyed your virtual visit! I'll be posting more pics from the weekend's events soon, so stay tuned for those.

During his time at school, he was a prefect and captained the Hufflepuff Quidditch team, playing as Seeker. In his sixth year Cedric put his name forward to compete in the Triwizard Tournament. Kids are only infants for a short time. So, I couldn't pass up the opportunity for this Harry Potter themed photoshoot, am I right? I studied this photo of Professor Sprout for my reference: Behold, a young Pomona Sprout in her early days studying the habits of baby Mandrakes. Grab your earmuffs, ladies! I have the MOST CONTENT baby, very unlike a Screaming Mandrake, if you ask me. Therefore, in order to elicit a scream, I would first give her something she wanted (like the butterfly below)... ....and then YANK it away from her to get THIS reaction! But, generally, she is SO HAPPY! She doesn't even care when I do this: Precious! "What in the world is this thing?" - P. Sprout Uprooting Mandrakes = Risky Business For Halloween, I carried her all around the neighborhood like this and she couldn't have been happier! Goodbye for now! Until next time!
