Five engaging games to get your students excited about new music topics! Perfect for a sub tub! These games are must have for all of those moments you need to catch their attention, fill some time, or are perfect to include for a sub. I bet even you can't get them all right! I don't have lots of time when I'm in the need for a sub. Having a sub in my room shouldn't mean that it takes me longer to set up than the time I'll actually be gone! This is why I adore my Music Or Not games. They are easy to run, adaptable, and don't include ridiculous amounts of set up time. Sometimes, our students have preconceived notions of what a topic is going to entail. They don't want to learn about Opera because its the lady in horns and Jazz is slow and boring. All those old guys have music that sounds the same. Put some of the fun back and get rid of their preconceived notions about music! Even your not so tech-friendly subs can handle these games with great options to play without technology. Students are introduced to: Composers Opera Titles Jazz Songs Symphony Titles Instruments of the World They will love learning about music in a new, hilarious way that is sure to get their competitive juices flowing! Perfect games to play as intro or closing activities for specific units, open house games, or as cross-curricular activities. And even better, these are the best emergency sub plans! They can be played by the kids in groups so you can be print free! Get 4 for the price of 5 by buying the bundle! Will save you 20%! Includes: Pasta or Composer Opera or Cheese City or Song Symphony or Art Instrument or River Here are some ideas for using the game: Emergency sub plans for all ages Perfect because your sub does not have to be a music person. Open House Activity End of class reward Game Day Game at the beginning or end of units Cross curricular activities TEACHERS LIKE YOU SAID... ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Julianne L. says, "So far I have only used the "Opera or Cheese" game with 5th grade students as an attention-getter at the start of an opera unit. I'm excited to use the various other games with other grade levels too. These will be great for end-of-year class periods, sub activities, or even just days when the class isn't feeling too great mentally. Thank you for making these available as a bundle!" ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Jackie B. says, "My students loved these! This is my "go to" for a non-music sub now. Some of the classroom teachers were talking to me about these because the students went back to class talking about them. One teacher suggested doing a few slides at a staff meeting! " ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Matthew C. says, "This game set is absolutely hilarious and my kids just have a blast with it. It is something to play when you really just need to give the students a break or a reward. While they might learn something from playing it, it is almost more fun if no one in the group knows anything from the start. I use it during conference weeks when I have a really short class and can't get much else done, store it in my substitute folder, and bring it out for the occasional rainy day or as a bonus for hard work." ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Colette H. says, "My middle school students loved this! I struggle to find material engaging enough, but simple enough for them. This is one of those games that I can use across the board with all my students! Thank you!" ___________________________________________________________________ Copyright © Melissa Stouffer, Mrs. Stouffer's Music Room Permission to copy for single classroom use only. This week I will be exploring the 4 voices (speaking, calling, whispering, and singing), and other vocal timbres, with my kindergarten classes. Today I thought I would share some of my favorite lesson activities to introduce and practice the 4 voices. 1. Apple Tree This game is my favorite way to introduce different voices- I do this with kindergarten and I have 3rd graders who are still asking to play it! First we learn the song: credit: Music a la Abbott Once the students know the song, I have everyone spread out around the room, sitting down on the floor. Everyone sings the song together, and after we sing "knocks me out", the students pretend that an apple knocked them out and lie down on the floor. I tell them the only thing that can wake them up is my singing voice. Then I repeat the song with all kinds of different voices, switching between voices mid-song. When the students hear my singing voice, they sit back up and sing with me until the end of the song. The first student to be sitting upright and singing with me at the correct time wins (and if they sit up too early they are out for that round). They love it because I do all kinds of silly voices, not just speaking and whispering, and I love it because they get lots of practice distinguishing the singing voice from other vocal timbres! 2. Boom Chicka Boom This is a great song for teaching echo songs, and I always bring it back when we are practicing echo format, but it is also another great song to sing in a variety of voices! Here's an example if you've never heard the song: There are tons of variations you can do with this one, obviously, and I usually come up with one or two new ones each year. My favorites, though, are "custodian style", which I do in the low voice of our school custodian (who is great and the students love him) and change the words to "broom chicka mop-a chicka", and "baby style", where I change the words to "poop chicka mama-chicka" (which pretty consistently makes everyone fall on the floor laughing). 3. Variations I love using this opportunity to sing some songs that I either want to throw in but haven't found a good spot in the curriculum to put it, or that the students have requested (or have some connection to). We sing the song in our best singing voices, then we do the other 3 "main" voices (speaking, calling, and whispering), and then I have students suggest other voices. Giants, frogs, babies, and robots are usually popular choices :) 4. Voices Poem Once we have spent plenty of time exploring our voices, it's time to actually label some of them. I found out about this cute little poem from another music teacher in my district and plan to use it this year to assess how well students can switch between voices: This is my speaking voice - I use it every day This is my whisper voice - it's quiet don't you say This is my calling voice - I use it to say "Hey!" This is my singing voice - I like it, it's okay!* *1st part of this line is sung on "sol", the last note is sung on "do" What are your favorite ways to teach and explore vocal timbre with your students? Share your ideas in the comments!

These worksheets are meant to accompany the Kodály-Aspiring Recorder Method. However, these worksheets also work well for people who start with an E-G recorder method. 15 pages of worksheets and activities for Sol/Mi and Ta/TiTi (or E-G if you prefer!) Perfect for assessments! Worksheets for 5 Sol/Mi songs (Lemonade, No Robbers Out Today, Quaker Quaker, See Saw, Starlight Star Bright) 5 pages of Task Cards with Sol/Mi patterns and ideas for use. Name it sheets (with and without letter name directions) Solfege recognition page on staff Compose it! How this recorder method works: It seems like there is always one. There is that one student that can’t play the recorder pieces because they can’t hear how it is ‘supposed to sound’. They are frustrated, and you are frustrated for them. This method uses what they already know: solfege and rhythm syllables. Focusing on introduction of the fingering instead of the note name helps students understand by using a known concept instead of the idea of note names which can be very abstract for some kids. This system lends itself well to a ‘belt’ system too if you wish. Each belt would be at the completion of a concept/set of concepts. Some concepts are grouped together, others appear separate. The rhythmic concepts are not emphasized in this system, however the first few are introduced with the solfege to review. Some rhythmic elements are not introduced in sequence to ensure that folk songs deal with only the solfege elements that have been introduced already. All solfege elements are practiced with 5 songs, rhythmic elements do not always have 5. Before students play each song, make sure they have been introduced to every concept in the song. I’ve included other musical elements such as repeats, anacrusis, ties, rounds, and time signature changes. Many of these do not happen until the later concepts when the children are more comfortable with the mechanics. In addition to being relatable concepts, this system also relies on widely known folk songs. This is also to help those kids that just need to hear it to play it as a beginner. Students can still practice at home once they have sung the songs in class but this must occur before they bring it home to practice. This method doesn’t deal with moveable do, or key signatures so that students can truly relate the solfege they know to the notes they are playing. Due to Do being fixed at C, low la and low sol do not appear but will be introduced in level 2 of the series when key changes and chromatics are introduced. If you’ve prepped them that do moves with other activities, it won’t be an issue later on if you don’t get to level 2. Also, if you work in district that utilizes fixed do in upper choral classes, they’ll have an advantage! If you are over constant assessments but little retention, squeaking on the low end, overblowing, and kids saying they "don't know how it goes", then this is for you! This recorder method will not only eliminate some of the biggest issues in recorder teaching, but it will incorporate the knowledge your kids already have. Don't start at the beginning. Start with what they KNOW. Using solfege and rhythm syllables, your kids will apply their knowledge to reading music faster. Teaching letters first is completely abstract. They aren't 'alphabetical' -- do we really ever go BAG in real life? No! So when you try to learn a fingering and with a letter that isn't in order, that can be very frustrating! Teach by previous knowledge and add the note name after the fingering is comfortable! Download the preview to see the full teacher and student books. "LOVE this resource!! I used it last year with my beginning recorder students and they easily picked up on reading and playing music." "I am so excited to start using this resource with my fourth graders this year! I think this method will fit my teaching style much better than Recorder Karate was, and I love that there are so many songs to practice each concept!"
