Usually when you talk about a "DARE" it's a mischievous thing, well today we're going to learn the Primary song Dare to do Right and it's about DARING you to do RIGHT and good things. Let's find out what good things we are DARED to do in this song! Listen to the words of the song (As music leader, sing the song with the piano or play on the Sing-Along App). Ask these questions: What are the dares? (to do right, to be true). How are we supposed to do the right and be true? (bravely, kindly, well) - sing/play the song again if needed. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - In the military, when soldiers do a great thing, they are awarded a medal. Today we are going to sing the song together and earn our Primary "DARE MEDALS" by learning this new song. Because doing the RIGHT is also a very great thing! For each medal, we will have a "good" dare. Who would like to earn a medal???? (medal printouts link included at the end of this post!) Call up 7 children to come pick a medal (displayed on the table) and hold in their hands. Line them up in order and start singing Dare to do Right as follows: (there are STOPS after each line as you sing, so that the certain child can earn their medal - and to sing it over and over without them realizing it ;) Make sure to inform your pianist of all the stops!) Sing all together and have child hold up the RIGHT medal: "Dare to do Right!" (stop). For the RIGHT metal: I dare you to wink with your RIGHT eye. (Pin/tape metal on shirt.) Sing all together from the beginning while child holds up TRUE medal: "Dare to do Right! Dare to be True!" (stop) For the TRUE metal: I dare you to tell us your TRUE (full) name. (Pin/tape metal on shirt.) Sing all together from the beginning while child holds up their WORK medal: "Dare to do Right! Dare to be True! You have the Work that no other can do;" (stop) For the WORK metal: I dare you to pretend to knock on a door like a missionary. (Pin/tape metal on shirt.) You could ask, what work can we do in the gospel??? Sing all together from the beginning while child holds up the BRAVELY medal: "Dare to do Right! Dare to be True! You have the Work that no other can do; Do it so Bravely, (stop) For the BRAVELY metal: I dare you to BRAVELY hold a brave pose (like superhero). (Pin/tape metal on shirt.) Ask, "What does it mean to be brave in doing the right and being true?" Sing all together from the beginning while child holds up the KINDLY medal: "Dare to do Right! Dare to be True! You have the Work that no other can do; Do it so Bravely, so Kindly," (stop) For the KINDLY metal: I dare you to KINDLY give someone a hug. (Pin/tape metal on shirt.) Sing all together from the beginning while child holds up the WELL medal: "Dare to do Right! Dare to be True! You have the Work that no other can do; Do it so Bravely, so Kindly, so Well, (stop) For the WELL metal: I dare you to give us your biggest smile. (Pin/tape metal on shirt.) Sing all together from the beginning while the child holds up the ANGEL medal: "Dare to do Right! Dare to be True! You have the Work that no other can do; Do it so bravely, so kindly, so well, Angels will hasten the story to tell." For the ANGEL metal: I dare you to give us your sweetest angel face while flapping your "wings". (Pin/tape metal on shirt.) Explain that when angels see us daring to do right and being true, they love to share the story. This is meant to go quickly. So have them do there dare quick and keep on singing!!!! Sing the song all together now that they have the DARE MEDALS!!! For the chorus, pass around the RIGHT medal as they sing. Have them pass the medal to the RIGHT every time they hear the word "DARE" sung. Who ever ends with it gets the TRIPLE DOG DARE (to help lead the song all the way through!!!!!) This songs' words were written in 1835 and it's as important today as it was then to DARE TO DO RIGHT!!!! Ask the Primary children to give an example of how they can DARE TO DO RIGHT. (examples: Stick up for a schoolmate at school, ask someone to speak good words when they are around you, play with a classmate at recess, help a sibling or parent/grandparent at home, read your scriptures, bring treats/visit/make a card for someone in need, keep the commandments etc. and there's soooooo much more!) Encourage the children to DARE TO DO RIGHT in their lives. Daring to do Right and to be True is the RIGHT thing to do. And it is doing as Jesus would and as He would have us do to live with Him again. Be brave, be kind. Find all the MEDAL PRINTOUTS HERE. (And we also thought it would be fun to let every child take one home to remember to do RIGHT. Click HERE for printables of the COLOR "RIGHT medals". and HERE for Black and White "RIGHT medals".) ***Did you like this post? We'd love to hear from you - it's what helps keep us going! PRIMARY MUSIC SINGING TIME ACTIVITIES to Motivate Children to Sing “You’re-on-a-Roll” singing cubes for singing choices 5 pages (color/black-and-white visuals and instructions) DESCRIPTION: Help children choose songs they want to sing and choose how to sing them by rolling the dice to make their choice. To Make: Print, color, and cut out the dice that follow. Laminate. Fold into a block, then glue or tape together. FOLLOW THE BLOCKS: Song Block: Decide the action by the top of the block, e.g., "Song about Jesus." The child names a song they want to sing that reminds them of Jesus. Have you had a chance to use Maori sticks in Primary yet? They can be so much fun for adding a steady beat, movement, people interaction, or just plain fun!
I was in charge of our Primary Singing time at church a few weeks ago and decided to play a simple game of tic-tac-toe to help us practice a song. It was so easy to put together, the kids had fun, and we got a good practice on one of my favorite songs! Supplies: Construction paper in Red and Blue Scissors Tape Chalk Prep Work: Draw an X on a piece of red construction paper. Cut it out and trace 5 more onto more red paper. Draw an O on a piece of blue construction paper and do the same thing. After they're all cut out, put them in a bag with some tape and chalk and you're all ready to go! Singing Time! I wanted to practice the song, "My Heavenly Father Loves Me" (Children's Songbook, pg. ). I think kids learn songs well when they sing them over and over. This game was a way to sing the song over and over and not get bored because we had a fun game going on at the same time! First, I drew a tic-tac-toe grid on the chalkboard, and taped up the X's on one side of it, and the O's on the other side. I split the kids into 2 groups: Team X and Team O. Here's how it worked with the younger kids (Jr. Primary, ages 3-8). The younger kids don't know this song very well, and the song is kind of long, so I chose to break it up into parts. I sang the first 1-2 lines of the song, and then had Team X repeat those lines. Then I did the same thing with Team O. So the kids got to hear and/or sing the same line 4 times. Repetition is key. :) After both teams heard and sang that line, then I chose 1 person from each team to come up and place an X and O on the board. Then we went onto the next line, and so on. It took about 4-6 turns before one of the teams had won. At the end we sang the song all the way through. We even had enough time to play another round! *Note: A few of the younger kids are a little bit more sensitive to winning and losing, so I made sure to have each team turn to the other and say "good job" to show how to be a good sport. :) Luckily for us, both teams each won a round so everyone was happy. Here's how it worked with the older kids (Sr. Primary, ages 8-11) The older kids know this song pretty well. They even know the second verse! So instead of the repetition, I played a fill in the blank game with each team. I went through the song in order and said a line to the song. Wherever I stopped the line, they had to tell me what the next word was. For example, "Whenever I hear the song of a _______," (the answer is BIRD) After each team got a chance to fill in a blank, I chose 1 person from each team to come put an X and O on the board. Then I did it all again. When the game ended, we sang the whole song all the way through. :) Again, we had enough time to play another round, and AGAIN, both teams each won one round. The first of the year is just around the corner! And that means new teachers for those adorable kiddos, it's always hard... my son HATES it but here's some games to get you teachers ready for that first Sunday and get to know your new kids and learn something new about the ones you keep. M&Ms Game You will need a bag of M&Ms and a bowl. Create questions for each color from the bag (example below) Hold the bowl up so the kids can't see the color they pick If the kids pick: Red= tell us your favorite activity to do Orange= tell us your favorite thing at school Yellow= tell us the chore you hate to do Blue= tell us something you want to learn how to do Green= tell us your favorite treat Brown= tell us your favorite movie or tv show Don't forget to do it yourself so the kids can get to know you too! Toss n' Talk Game On a large ball (those balls you find at Walmart in the "cages") with a permanent marker write questions around the ball. (Question ideas are below) Begin class on the floor with all the kids and you in a circle, roll or gently toss the ball whatever question their right thumb (right hand/left pinky, etc) that's what they answer. Jenga On the blocks, write questions to get to know the kids (Question ideas below), set up the game on the table, have the kids and you take turns picking out the blocks and answer the question on them. Question ideas: 1)Who is your favorite scripture story character? 2) If you could have any animal for a pet what would it be? 3) What is your favorite breakfast? 4) What is your favorite movie or tv show? 5) If you could eat one food for a whole month, what would it be? 6) What is your favorite subject in school? 7) Would you rather cake or brownies? 8) Where were you born? 9) What do you think is in outer space? 10) If you were invisible for a day, what would you do? 11) What is the worst smell? 12) What do you want to do when you grow up? 13) If you had 1 million dollars, what would you buy? 14) What is your favorite Primary song? 15) What do you like to do when you play outside? 16) Do you have a lucky number? What is it and why is it lucky for you? 17) What is the best thing about being a kid? 18) What is your favorite color? 19) Do you have a favorite joke? What is it? 20) If you were president for a day, what would you do?

I highly recommend this Singing Time activity the next time you want to do a song review. The children (and teachers!) seemed to really lov...
I am the music leader for the primary (children's group) at our church. That means every Sunday you will find me doing all kinds of crazy things to help the children learn the gospel through music. A few months ago, my primary president asked if I could also go into the nursery (children 18 mos to 3 years) and teach them as well. I was more than willing as my daughter is in that class and I know how much she loves music. I will admit that I was apprehensive because is seemed a bit overwhelming to add that to my already busy schedule. So of course I turned to the internet for help. I took most of my ideas from here and here then modified them for my situation. Here's what I do.... I decided that the best way for the children to lean the music and to keep the work load down for myself would be to sing the same songs every week. Children this age really thrive on routine. In addition, it takes several repetitions of the same song before they will even begin to join in. So I made up a schedule and I stick to it every week. The hardest part was gathering all the supplies, but once I had them all together everything became easy peasy. (note: cs = Children's Songbook) First, I keep all my supplies in a tote in the primary room so they are ready to go when it's time When I enter the nursery room the children are always so excited to see me. They are so cute! No one else greets me as enthusiastically as they do. In order to encourage the children to stay in place near me, I spread a blanket on the floor for them to sit on. They love to help me spread it out. 1. Hello Friends, cs 254a (actions) We always start with this song. We sit in a circle (I kneel on the floor as well), hold hands and shake hands as we sing. 2. Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes, cs 275a (actions) 3. I Love To See the Temple, cs 95 (pictures) I cut pictures from the Temples magazine and glued them onto card stock for stability and to hide the other side. Then I slipped them into plastic page protectors. I give each child a picture to hold and look at while we (I) sing the first verse of the song. I had to tape the tops closed or the children would take the pictures out of the protectors. :) 4. Smiles, cs 267a (actions, pictures) I cut out and laminated these faces then taped them on opposite sides of a large craft stick. I show the face that matches the words and encourage the children to smile and frown along. You can find the faces in the Primary 3 visual aids or here. 5. If You're Happy, cs 266 (actions, bells) I made these bell bracelets with craft supplies I had on hand: some stretchy silver cord and small jingle bells. You could also use ribbon, string, or pipe cleaners or glue the bells onto craft sticks. No substitute for the bells (at least not that I can think of!) We sing one verse clapping our hands then another verse waving bye-bye with both hands to really hear the bells. They love it! 6. Once There Was a Snowman, cs 249 (pompom, actions) OR Popcorn Popping, cs 242 (actions) OR Rain is Falling All Around, cs 241b (actions) We only do one of these songs, depending on the season or the weather; Snowman in winter, Popcorn in spring, and Rain all the other times substituting the current weather for rain. For Snowman I have small white pompom "snowballs" for them to hold. I usually ask them questions about the weather to introduce Rain is Falling. Example: Me: "Is it snowing outside?" Them: Nooo. Me: "Is it sunny outside?" Them: Nooo. Me: "Is it raining outside?" Them: Yes! Then we do actions suggested by the lyrics. I think once the leaves start falling, we'll use 'leaves' in place of 'rain'. 7. Primary Song of the Month (flipchart) This is actually something new I'm thinking about adding. The plan is to bring in my flipcharts I use in primary and sing them part of the song the rest of the primary is learning that month. I haven't tried it yet, so I don't know how it will go, but it think it would help them to be at least a little familiar with the songs (as much as they can tolerate). 8. Jesus Wants Me for a Sunbeam, cs 60 (streamers) The children each get two streamers to wave while we sing. Of course, we have to throw our arms in the air on "sun-BEAM". Here's the tutorial on making the streamers that I posted to another blog. 9. The Wise Man and the Foolish Man, cs 281 (actions) 10. Do As I'm Doing, cs 276 (shakers) Each child gets two eggs to shake while we sing. This is their favorite prop; they look forward to it the whole singing time. They're just Easter eggs that I filled with a half tablespoon of rice (the least amount I could and still have them sound good) then glued shut with a hot glue gun. BTW, the open egg is one that one of the children broke open last Sunday. That's why I put in the smallest amount of rice I could. Hopefully the rest of the children won't follow his example this Sunday. I'd hate to not be able to use these anymore! 11. I Am a Child of God, cs 2 (mirror) I like to end on a reverent note and this is my favorite primary song of all time. I used puff paints to decorate the mirror. The children fold their arms while I hold the mirror and move it around so they each get a chance to look in it. Here's a closer look at the mirror: The kids are so funny: they love to make faces at themselves: After we're done singing I give each child a sticker, then they help me shake out and fold up the blanket. Finally, they all yell 'bye-bye' as I leave. They're the best. :) There you have it. I hope you can use some of my ideas in your nursery. And please share your ideas as well! Happy Singing

Step-by-Step tutorial How to Make Egg Shakers Instruments quick, easy and on a budget using Easter eggs! Egg Shakers are my go-to for LDS Primary Singing Time.
Water Balloons! That should grab their attention! This summer has been soooo HOT!!! Let's cool down! Bring 8 water balloons to Primary filled with a song to sing inside. I ended up just putting a number (not the actual song title) inside. I taped the top and bottom of the small paper to make it water proof. Call up a child to come pop the balloon and reveal the song inside! Also, bring some fun summer accessories and let another child come up and help lead the song. Some ideas are a sun hat, sunglasses, towel, swim flippers, goggles, etc. -iheartprimarymusic

find the best singing time supplies for your primary, here's what I recommend to purchase as primary music leader
Being called as a Primary Music Leader is super overwhelming at first. I know for me, I felt completely weighed down by where to start, what do do, sorting
This week we were finishing up, I will follow God's Plan for Me. My goal was to have some fun while perfecting the song. A few weeks ago I found this really fun video on YouTube where they use paper plates to teach this song. (click here to view the video) I used this idea with my Junior Primary and they LOVED IT!! We must have sang the song six times while we clapped with our plates!! Then I spent about five minutes singing the second part of the song, because the children were struggling a little with the words. We added some fun actions which they enjoyed. To finish we sang it all the way through again. I have never heard such volume with my Junior Primary! I am one happy Singing Lady : ) For Senior Primary it was all about The Olympics!! I asked a child at random to pick two numbers. Underneath the numbers was a different winter Olympic sport. Once they matched the picture with the sport with the name of the sport, they received a medal. We then sang, I will follow God's Plan with a little twist. Bobsleigh - perfect lyrics Figure Skating - spin on a certain word Ice Hockey - divide the group in half and take turns singing Speed Skating - sing as fast as we can (but staying with the piano) Free Style Skiing - Kids choice Curling - singing as we snapped along Snow Boarding - started the song really quiet and then got louder and louder Ski Jump - as we sang I choose words to hold the note as long as we can. The kids favourite was the speed skating and the ski jump. I was amazed that in twenty minutes we were able to sing the song eight times!! The children LOVED this idea and were really enjoying singing time : ) These were the medals I made. I used my own ideas as well as some ideas from leaders on the facebook page.
