On my way in to school this morning, IT SNOWED! Well...it "snowed" Tennessee style. It looked like a blizzard of dandruff bits but for us in the South, that means a lot! It put me in the mood for all things winter and so I thought I'd put together a list of my Top Ten Favorite Winter Art Lessons. If you follow the link on each of these, you'll find a video for most and a lesson for all. Let's go! SNOW GLOBE CITIES! This lesson was a hit with my fourth graders last year. They really loved working on their buildings that were inspired by famous places from around the globe...get it, GLOBE?! yeah, it's okay, they didn't get it either. PENGUIN LOVE! My first graders created these last winter and they made our halls so cute, cuddly and happy. We went big with these guys and my students could not have loved it more! KINDERGARTEN SNOWMEN! This lesson was pretty similar to the first grade one in that the background involved learning how to paint overlapping spiral lines. WATERCOLOR WINTERSCAPES! My third graders are getting ready to work on these tomorrow! We paint ours on cardboard pizza rounds, inspired by the artist Jen Aranyi. KINDERGARTEN WINTER LANDSCAPES! The smallest of artists made the snowiest of artwork! Follow the link on more lesson details. HOT CHOCOLATE TIME! My second graders were inspired by the artist Heather Galler to create these delicious cups of hot cocoa. I'm thinking I need to bring this lesson back soon! FAUX STAINED GLASS WINDOW! My fourth graders created these fun pieces inspired by stained glass windows. They even learned how real stained glass windows are made, check out the video! PRINTED MITTENS AND HAT SELF-PORTRAIT! Oh, these second grade selfies were a hit! This is another lesson I think needs a repeat this winter. LOOKING FOR MORE LESSONS AND INSPIRATION? Well, then, just head over here! I've got plenty more. Happy wintery creations!

This is a lovely Fall Painting where students can feel successful no matter their age or ability. Supplies Needed: Watercolor Paper Blue Watercolor Paint Acrylic or Tempra Paint - yellow, red, orange, green and brown Brushes Have the students fold their paper in half. Students will create a light blue background and add some wavy lines in the bottom half for the water. Let this dry. Add the land just above the fold line. Make sure it is still wet and fold it over applying pressure to the green area so it prints onto the bottom half. Next add each tree, printing each tree after it is painted and still wet. I used two colors for each tree, a background color and another accent color. Don't worry about the bottom half not printing as a solid area of color, that's what makes it look like a reflection in the water. Add spots of color in a variety of colors and sizes to make it look like leaves on the ground. Next add the trunks of the trees, I painted a y shape and made the trunks a little bit wobbly so they look more natural. The students will have fun printing the reflections and be thrilled with their finished work.

Students will use different “beaks” to try and pick up food. Bird beaks have adapted over the years to help birds survive in their environments. Set up tables depending on the type of food. Students will take turns trying to see how much of each food they can pick up using the tool in ONE TRY! They will record the amounts on their chart. After they have visited all of the food stations students should discuss which “beak” was the best for eating each type of food. What I use to represent each type of food: worms- gummy worms Bugs-raisins fish- swedish fish seeds- sunflower seeds nectar- water with food coloring

Technology unplugged activities seems like an oxymoron. How can you use technology if you only have access to a paper and pencil? The short answer is you can't but we know the long answer is sometimes you have to! If your school uses devices for testing or you lose wifi or you have a sub that is not comfortable with tech lessons, you might not be able to access technology during your scheduled time. In the past, you might have switched gears completely and did an unrelated lesson, but I've since found many paper and pencil activities that support the same
