The Pigeon has to go to school and he's not happy about it! In fact, he's worried. Help kids kick their first-day fears with these fun ideas!
Last summer I added Mo Willems' The Pigeon HAS to Go to School! to my classroom library. Of course, this addition was a no-brainer. Willems' books are always super popular, especially Pigeon books. Just as predicted, my students loved this book. It is the perfect length for the beginning of the year, when attention spans are extra short and students need a little break from all the procedural training they are receiving. Since I knew this book would be a hit, I decided to make it the centerpiece of back to school. I created some basic "Pigeon themed" math and literacy activities, as well as a simple craft. I used these activities intermittently during the first week and was able to glean some great info about my new students' basic math and literacy skills, as well as their fine motor skills and listening skills. One of the Pigeon themed activities was a number/number word/counting mini book. Students traced and wrote the numbers 1-10, as well as the number words 1-10. Then students illustrated a picture to go with each number. We broke this activity up over a couple of days. Students took part in a listening activity. Students had to complete a picture according to a series of questions/statements that I read aloud. (If you've every made a glyph with your students, this activity feels really similar.) Students also put together their first puzzler for the year. This puzzler focused on number representations. Students cut and glued the puzzler pieces to tell what number is represented in the box. By the end, students have a completed picture that they can color. I use various puzzlers throughout the year. This the Pigeon puzzler is a great introduction to how to complete a puzzler. Students loved making their simple, one-page craft Pigeons. All that was required was the Pigeon pattern (I used white card stock), scissors, and glue. The class Pigeons made a really quick and cute back to school bulletin board. In addition to these activities, students worked on counting/cardinality, geometry, place value, number bonds, handwriting, the alphabet, rhyming words, sight words, and more. The Pigeon HAS to Go to School! is a perfect springboard for a variety of skills. For a math freebie (from the printables featured above), click on the picture below. This freebie provides practice with ten frames, counting, and number identification. If you have not added, The Pigeon HAS to Go to School! to your classroom library, I highly recommend it. There are so many directions you can go with this book. More importantly, your students will love it and be totally engaged. What a great way to start the year, by reading a book that students truly enjoy. :) For more details about the all of the Pigeon inspired activities I used with my students, be sure to click on the picture below. Of course (like most), I'm not certain what this year's back to school days will look like. Whatever the setup, I know I'll be using The Pigeon HAS to Go to School! to help me kick off the year. Monday marks the official day teachers will return to school to begin making preparations for the upcoming school year. Thankfully, this week has turned out to be a grand finale to the summer! On Monday, Kara asked if I wanted to join her and her kiddos on a morning trip to the Denver Botanic Gardens. And boy, I'm sure glad she did! It was BEAUTIFUL! The flowers. The weather. The company. The glass sculptures by Chihuly. EVERYTHING! On Tuesday, I worked up at school for a bit. Do you see the resemblance? We start the school year with 2 half days in a row. I have some fun things planned for the first day involving a Pete the Cat hunt around the school, but on the second half day we will be doing some pigeon activities. After reading the book, the students will be asked to decide if they would let the pigeon join our class. Then they will draw and write about it. As a large group, we'll graph their answers. Wednesday-Friday, I stayed in Beaver Creek near Avon, Colorado, where my Aunt Linda and her friends were vacationing. It was fantastic to be with family and friends in such a gorgeous place. We went ATVing, saw a movie, ate delicious food, watched a little of the Golden Girls, and enjoyed the beautiful scenery that surrounded us. I'm so thankful they let me tag along. I truly enjoyed it! Please excuse our helmet hair :) LOOK AT THAT VIEW!

Next month marks the start of our Books in a Series unit. In reader's workshop students select a series of their choice to explore in book clubs, while also creating and writing adventures about a realistic fiction character of their own in writer's workshop. What better author to use for mentor texts than the one and only, Mo Willems?! His work is dreamy (insert heart eye emoji here)! This post contains affiliate links for your shopping convenience. I consistently choose his work each year to guide my students to explore all the potential there is with author's craft of such few words and pictures. In reader's workshop I use the Elephant and Piggie series during my mini-lessons and look to the Pigeon series in shared reading. As a culminating project, we make these sweet Pigeon headbands that make you go googley eyed at the first sight of them! I had seen them on students while watching Mo Willems speak at an elementary school at the end of one of the Knuffle Bunny DVDs. I am having a hard time locating where you can find the DVD. I took it out at my local library. You can find Knuffle Bunny, Knuffle Bunny Too, and Knuffle Bunny Free on Amazon by clicking the book titles. With this particular craft, I chose to precut the pieces for the students. I got very lucky that the blue paper and blue sentence strips that I had laying around happened to be the very same shade. Unfortunately I do not happen to know the brand of either. However, I have selected two online that I believe to be the closest match. The bright blue in the Astrobrights "bright" assortment pack gives you a great option! Students glued all the pieces for the Pigeon face. Once they were finished gluing, they came to me to assemble the "neck and body." I chose to staple these pieces in effort to save time. One staple to attach two white strips to the head. Then I separated the strips and attached one to each side of the "body." One tip- the longer the white strip, the more likely the pigeon head will lean to one side. I chose to keep them short to prevent this from happening! The body was a blue sentence strip. I did my best to match up the sentence strip color and found this multicolor neon pack from Carson Dellosa on Amazon. I measured each students head before attaching the Pigeon head. I have also seen teachers incorporating curriculum needs by adding writing to the sentence strip. Student can practice adding dialogue tags to what Pigeon says in his speech bubbles. This is the perfect way to incorporate dialogue punctuation as well. Then students can write the whole sentence including the dialogue tag on their sentence strip. Click each Pigeon book title to grab yourself a copy! Hi everyone! Long time, no see... again... I have not actually made any kind of cards/crafts in over a month! It's about time that I start setting aside some time to do that... I don't have a card to share today, but I do have some school projects that I thought were cute & fun, so I decided to post them for ya! I'm also going to show you some cute projects that my sister has been working on (she's very talented, but she doesn't think so)... :) I'm so sorry that I haven't posted in such a long time, I'm going to try and be better... This was a super simple project that my sister made using some of the scrapbook paper from my stash. We just found a cute patterned paper, chose solid colored cardstock to match, and then she traced their hands and stacked them... VOILA! I think it came out really adorable! Here's a "no soliciting" sign that she made. She just picked up a frame, some scrapbook paper & stickers, and some ribbon and put this little beauty together! My sister also made this Cat in the Hat poster that goes along with the new common core standards in Kindergarten. When she showed me this, my jaw dropped! Super cute! We had our annual Family Literature Night last week and my booth was featuring the author/illustrator, Mo Willems. I LOVE HIS BOOKS (and so do the kids)! To make this poster, I just sketched out the characters, colored them with chalk, and traced them with black Sharpie. The idea for coloring with chalk is a technique I stole borrowed from my sister. :) Saw the idea for these balloons on Pinterest (a website I feel I may be addicted to). These were extremely easy to make; just a balloon and a Sharpie... Here's a shot of the entire booth all put together! Here I am with my friend, Shelly... We aren't too cool to wear a pigeon headband! The headbands were really easy to make and the kids LOVED them! It's literally just a blue circle, white circle, black circle, and yellow triangle. The kids glued them together, then we attached them to a sentence strip and put them on their little noggins. It was really cute to see all of the little "pigeons" walking around the auditorium! :) Well, there's a little snapshot of what I've been up to... I hope to be back soon with some sort of card! :) Thanks for stopping by!!!!!
