The start of spring and the windy weather we have been having always makes me think of Kites. We don’t usually have much luck when we try to fly our own kites, but we have had fun crafting some very pretty ones. When Emily was little we make a Triangle Shape Kite, but this time we tried something a little different. To make our kites we used Bleeding Tissue Paper, cardstock, straws, yarn and some colored construction paper. The girls always love working with bleeding tissue paper, it has a somewhat magical property to it which is always fun. If you have never tired it before we definitely recommend it. First, I cut out cardstock in the shape of a Kite and then Juliette got to work with the bleeding tissue paper. She covered the paper with a little bit of water then placed the pieces of bleeding tissue paper over the water. They like to brush over them with a little more water to make sure they are sticking down to the paper well. Once the paper is covered to satisfaction we just set them to the side and let them dry. Now for the fun part, Juliette pulled off all of the bleeder paper to see the beautiful colored design that was left behind…MAGIC!!! To put the kites together we cut pieces of colored straws to glue horizontally and vertically across the kite. Then we glued on a long piece of yarn and construction paper bows for the tail. Juliette was very excited to help me glue it together with the glue gun. Since we have had a hard time gluing straws to paper in the past I figured this would be the best way. For another windy day project check out the Windsock Craft we made to go with the book The Wind Blew. Follow our ADVENTURES on Facebook, Pinterest and Twitter!

Note: I have tried for several days to upload the photos for this post correctly, but with no success. Here's hoping none of my readers end up with a cramp in the neck after reading this!!) Travel magazines usually contain breathtaking nature photography. I cut these out and laminated them to make sturdy, beautiful animal identification cards. I have over a 100 cards of different sizes, but here is a little sample: For the most part, my children just love 'free playing' with these. They stare at them and talk about them and make up little stories, and ArrowBoy especially likes imitating the sounds. But they can also be used in more structured ways. The possibilities for using these are ENDLESS... Here are a few very basic ideas: MATCHING: Match the plastic animal to the picture card. (A variation for my older child is to put the chosen animals in a cloth bag and she has to then 'feel' for the one on the particular picture card!) Match the picture to a magnetic animal from our Melissa and Doug set. BEGINNING SOUNDS Use alphabet flash cards to match the animal on your picture card to the beginning sounds. SORTING: Sort by continent on which the animals are found Are they wild / farm animals, or pets Mammals / birds / reptiles Place in alphabetical order (for older children) Or... play 'I Spy' to practice hearing beginning sounds.

Kids will have fun learning all the stories in the Bible with these fun, hands-on Bible Games for Preschoolers and kids of all ages!
At the beginning of each school year, I have my second graders create portraits of themselves to hang up in the room. I read a book about being an individual and being unique. Usually I use I Like Myself. The kids love the illustrations and how the main character loves so many things about herself. It has a positive message that I hope my students will adopt in their own lives. After we read the story and talk about what we love about ourselves, I give my students the outline of a head. Then I give them mirrors, colored pencils and crayons and have them create a detailed portrait of themselves. On their shirt they write "I like myself because____" and fill in the blank. I give them yarn in all different colors for their hair but everything else they color. After we share these, I hang them up on clotheslines above the windows in my classroom. It makes a great display for back to school/open house and the parents love trying to find their child and figure out what they love about themselves. Click the picture below to get the portrait outline.
