Yippee! I actually think I will be on time for my Five for Friday offered by Doodle Bugs Teaching this week. We continued our 'Five Senses' theme. Take a look at some of our activities. For our sense of smell, we made these flowers… We glued stems and then added flowers by scrunching up tissue paper squares. Then, we sprayed the flowers to make them smell good. The final product…… Another activity that required us to rely on our sense of smell was smelling different scents and then trying to guess what it was… I used a combination of real foods, extracts, and flavorings on cotton balls inside small containers. Then, the sweet ones used a bingo dot marker to show what it was. If you would like a copy of the 'What's That Smell?' page click HERE or on the page above. It is also available as a freebie in the preview of my 'Learning About My Five Senses' pack available at my TpT store. For our sense of taste, we conducted a taste test. Different foods we tried included lemons, pickles, pretzels, Hot Tamales, Sour Patch Kids, Hershey Kisses, and bittersweet chocolate. Each sweetie had a happy/sad face to show if they liked the food item or not. We tallied and decided if more or less people liked each item. As you can see not everyone liked all the food we tried, but I was so proud that they at least tried all! One of our culminating activities was playing a five senses game using 'What's In Ned's Head?' and a lotto game from Lakeshore. We also made a five sense bear that focuses on each of the senses. Love these! To assess the learning of my little loves, they cut and glued pictures according to the sense it requires us to use most. They did fabulous! This page is in my 'Learning About My Five Senses' pack available at TpT. Our school was lucky enough to have Matt Glover join us for an in-service to show how to introduce our preschoolers to book making. I have heard Matt speak several times, but this was the first time I saw him actually do a lesson with little ones. It was pretty amazing! Link up your week with Doodle Bugs Teaching or head on over there to read more! Thanks for reading! Have a great day :)

Photo Source: www.creativetots.com We found this adorable science lesson at Creative Tots and thought it would go great with a spring animal or pond life unit! Through it, students will discover not only what frogs eat, but {hands on!} how a frog catches their food! Supplies You'll Need Party blower Velcro strips Rubber or plastic insect toys To begin, pass out a party blower to each of your students. Invite them to blow through the hole, extending the streamer so that you can attach a 2-inch strip of Velcro on the bottom of it {so that the Velcro will be on the outside as the streamer curls back up}. Scatter small rubber or plastic insects, each adorned with small piece of Velcro around the activity table, and invite your students to pretend they are frogs, sticking out their 'tongues' to pick up their dinner. Your kiddos are certain to have a blast {and a few giggles!} with this activity! Extension: Make it a game! Scatter Velcro bugs throughout the room and have your little frogs race to fill up their cups {or 'lily pad plates' to be a bit more 'froggy'!}. The student with the most bugs at the end, wins!

Wheel and Axle This simple machine is a wheel attached to a rod. The rod is the axle. Examples: wagon wheel, car wheels, car steering wheel, ferris wheel, doorknob Activity 1 Materials 3 straws book Directions Put a book on a desk or table. Push the book. Place the straws on the table and place the book on top of the straws. Predict if the book will be easier or harder to push. Push the book. (The book should move easier.) Answer the question, "Do wheels make work easier?" Explanation Rolling the book causes less friction than sliding the book. The less friction the easier it is to move something. Activity 2 Materials A toy car Directions Predict if a toy car will move easier on its side or on its wheels. Place a toy car on its side. Push the car. Place the toy car on its wheels. Push the car. Answer the question, "Do wheels make work easier?" Activity 3 Have the children create a list of machines with wheels and sketch or draw pictures of some of the machines. They can also look in books and magazines to see how many pictures they can find of machines with wheels. Activity 4 Have the children make racing cars (with wheels and axles) out of recycled materials. (Then they can have races with the cars!) Materials toilet paper roll paint thumb tack/push pin 4 small bottle caps (same size) 1 straw 2 tooth picks scissors paper punch glue The directions can be found at Mama-Jenn's blogspot. I love teaching addition to young children. They have such a fascination with the idea of taking two separate amounts and combining them to get another new amount. Manipulatives are key when kids are first learning to add. I love hands-on learning. Hands-on learning encourages kids to become active participants in their own learning. They can actually handle and manipulate the objects to explore a concept. The addition machine is a simple way to transform a mathematical concept into a magical learning experience. When I first started teaching, I was a special education resource teacher. I traveled around with a cart. Since I was a traveling classroom, any math manipulatives used had to be small and portable. To take up space on my cart, any manipulative had to show real worth. This machine is worth it's weight in gold. I started with a PVC drain from the hardware store. Kids put manipulatives into each opening on the drain and unscrewed the bottom to "add" the two sides together. You can see the blog post with the old addition machine here. A month ago, I found this amazing picture on Pinterest. See the pin here. I couldn't find the original blog post, so I'm not able to give credit, but you can see the awesome idea below. I tried to recreate this amazing addition machine and came up with two different options. Head over to my blog to get the DIY directions for the Addition Machine. It is so easy to make and I promise you will love it! Check out some more creative teaching ideas on the Teach Junkie Link-up! Until next month,
