If you haven’t experienced the joy of slamming the front end of your amplifier with a great-quality boost pedal, it’s time you add the JHS Pedals Prestige to your rig. Running it low transforms it into 3D-sounding buffer. You can nudge it up a bit to get a clear volume boost. Or maybe you want to keep turning the knob to punish your preamp into its most gorgeous harmonic overdrive. And for the sonically brave, try dimming the JHS Prestige buffer/booster pedal and listen as your amp begs for mercy. And all this power comes in an adorable mini enclosure that takes up minimal pedalboard real estate.

I use it in my pedal board at the end of the drive chain and into the front of the valve amp and it does the job, nothing crazy but improves the overall sound and you can also boost it and shape the sound very quickly so can play around with it depending on the song with a toggle touch and the shape. Very good construction too. It does a subtle thing but definitely in a good way. I have not used the DI but again is one of the good extra features you get with this pedal.
Edit Sept. 9, 2020: new Rev 1.3 boards need to be orderd so the lead time will be about 3 weeks befiore shipping from this date. This is a Pre-Order Group Buy (GB) the Best Thing since Sliced Bread (BTSB) Buffer that I will be offering as a GB. It was designed by Jhofland to address a need that I had with my TPA3255 Class D amp which required balanced input with gain. Jhofland designed a prototype that had just balanced output with gain (selectable via jumpers) with either balanced or SE inputs. I tested it out and it works great. Photo of the prototype can be seen above with components installed. You can also see it used in a nicely integrated TPA3255 Class D amp (also available from my shop) in an example by member Redjr on DIYAudio. I thought that a more universal buffer would provide a choice of either SE/Balanced input and be able to driver SE/Balanced outputs simultaneously. This might be useful for driving a subwoofer amp, for example. The topology uses a state of the art OPA1656 for the input buffers and state of the art LME49724 balanced line drivers and another OPA1656 for the SE outputs. Another OPA1656 provides a bootstrap for the input amp to allow lower distortion drive at higher drive levels close to rail voltages. The power supply is provided with a very low noise Murata isolated DC/DC converter to take 12vdc from a wall-wart to +/-15v using the DC/DC followed with a CLC filter. The BTSB is absolutely silent and adds no noise or coloration. It is very transparent and can be used as a simple signal booster in cases where you need just a little bit of extra bump in the output from your source or existing preamp. With the ability to accept SE or balanced and to drive SE or balanced, and with your choice of 0dB, 6dB, 14dB, or 20dB gain selectable with a convenient 8-position DIP switch - you will find it an indispensible part of your electronics toolbox kit. I think that you will agree that is may be the best thing since sliced bread. Boards will be 1.6mm thick, 1oz copper, ENIG finish, and green color solder mask. Construction is straight forward as it is mostly through hole except for the opamps. Price is $23 ea for the bare PCB. The BOM cost is about $65. Please see BOM below - I will post a Mouser shopping cart to make ordering easy (soon). Sorry, but I cannot provide boards with the SMT opamps prepopulated and installed anymore - it is just too time consuming. Please try it yourself it is not hard.

Got a little simple boost/preamp for your Thursday. Should be a pretty easy fit in a 1590A. J113 alternatives would be J201, 2N5457, and probably a couple other JFETs that are obsolete. 😑
The JHS Prestige is the successor the discontinued JHS Mr. Magic pedal. It is a boost pedal with buffering capabilities, using a single knob to adjust the function. It is also produced in a hand-painted black casing.
This one just traced over on FSB. It's essentially a modified Wampler Plexidrive with an added bass control. Unless you're really sure any through-hole J201s you have on hand are in spec/authentic, I'd suggest using MMBFJ201s, which are the SMD version which are still in production and much easier to get in spec than the discontinued through-hole version. SMD to through-hole conversion boards here. Update August 19, 2019: Corrected a few values that have now been confirmed by Benson. The traces haven't changed however.
in my last post I made a RIAA preamp for my turntable and I decided I wanted to make a general purpose hifi preamp for iPods, PCs, and whatever else you need to plug into your HiFi so here it is - based on the OPA2134 opamp (again) although I haven't tried it for this, I'm sure it'll work well as a instrument preamp too
It was a friend's 44th birthday a while back, so I decided to make a quick pedal for him. I'd been wanting to try out a Brian May treble booster based pedal for a while, and I found this one at http://147pedals.blogspot.com/2010/11/simple-tone-control-brian-may-treble.html. Veroboard is also known as stripboard or perf board, and looks something like this: Whichever terminology you use, make sure you get a board with lines/strips of copper and NOT one that has each hole insulated from the next like this: I like building circuits on Veroboard, since it’s simply a case of following the picture. You don’t even need to understand how circuits work (although it would obviously be helpful for trouble shooting). Anyway, here are the simple steps to making a Veroboard pedal. 1. Cut your Veroboard to size (in my case 12x5, erm, holes). EDIT: In hindsight it would have been better to make this 14x5 which would allow an extra hole either side of C1 to attach the wires to the tone switch. So learn from my mistake and make yours 14x5. 2. Now "cut" the tracks wherever you are instructed to do so (you are just cutting through the copper, not the whole board). In the case of this particular circuit, between the pins under R1, C1, R4, and R6. The result after cutting would look something like this: 3. Solder the components on. Note that the copper strips are on the underside of the board, and the soldering is just like when you get a pre-made circuit board. Here's what mine looks like after soldering. Please ignore the fact that I'd also added some cables before taking this photo. 4. Finally, you need to wire up the enclosure. This circuit was so simple that wiring up the enclosure was the hard bit. If you are unsure how to wire up a stomp box enclosure, then have a look at my blog post over here: http://diystrat.blogspot.com/2009/06/buhow-to-wire-up-stomp-box-effects.html 5. Here’s the finished result. I didn’t have any time to make the enclosure itself look good this time around. My apologies in advance for the silly name. Veroboard is very cheap and there are a LOAD of good circuits out there that use it. Here's just one example of a site that has a few: http://www.generalguitargadgets.com/richardo/perfboard/index.html As you can see, the Veroboard layout is much easier to follow than trying to read a circuit diagram, kinda like reading guitar tabs when you can't read music. Some of the projects don't even need you to cut any of the tracks. This Brian-May-style treble booster was a very simple circuit to build and works extremely well. In fact I think I may build one for myself too.
In the footsteps of our long-ago discontinued Mr. Magic pedal, we bring you the "final act" in boost magic...The Prestige! From buffer, to boost, to tone enhancer, the Prestige will prove to be a vital and necessary piece of gear for anyone's rig. With the boost knob set to zero, you have in your hands an amazing buffer/enhancer for long cable runs as well as a tool that will simply add some life back into your rig. When the Boost knob is in the first 25% you will get different flavors of the buffer/enhancer as well as slight volume increases. When the Boost knob is set between 25% and 50% you have a powerful, dynamic solo boost that adds definition, clarity and a little magic to your solos and lead passages. When set at 50% or more, the Prestige gives you the ability to break up your tube amp in a smooth and natural way resulting in real tube overdrive from the preamp section of your tube amp. The last 25% of the volume range can completely destroy your amp in the best way possible, resulting in rich soaring sustain, breakup, and on some amps even a smooth warm fuzzy growl. This super small 1.5"x3.5" booster can do what needs to be done no matter what the task. If you need a little magic in your life, look no further!

Best Thing since Sliced Bread (BTSB) Buffer, Panel Mount Edition v1.2P designed by Jhofland that is designed to mount directly to a panel (no standoffs required). Uses Neutrik XLR/TRS jacks and Elecaudio premium RCA connectors. There is an automatic switching relay that activates to disconnect the RCA input when something is plugged into the XLR or TRS jacks. I thought that a more universal buffer would provide a choice of either SE/Balanced input and be able to driver SE/Balanced outputs simultaneously. This might be useful for driving a subwoofer amp, for example. The topology uses a state of the art OPA1656 for the input buffers and state of the art OPA1637 balanced line drivers and another OPA1656 for the SE outputs. Construction is mostly SMT and parts are 0603 size plus a few small pitch opamps. You will need some SMT soldering experience to build the board as they are not if parts. The Catalinbread Belle Epoch Tape Echo, has tape echo sounds so authentic you'd swear there was tape inside the pedal! Inspired by the Maestro Echoplex, EP-3 model, perhaps the most famous tape delay ever, the Belle Epoch features everything we love about the EP-3 in a small, maintenance free pedal format. We felt that a "tape echo" pedal was much more than just a standard digital delay with some "filtering" on the repeats. There are a lot of subtle and not-so-subtle traits of the Echoplex that needed to be implemented in order to be authentic. The preamp, the self-oscillation character, the ability to play the pedal as an instrument unto itself, the ability to control the "record level" of the signal hitting "tape", the wow and flutter, the way the repeats decay, the way the circuit interfaces with the amp and other pedals - all these things were important to get right. The Belle Epoch was designed to be run in front of your amp in the same way the Echoplex was designed to be run in front of your amp. They share almost identical input and output circuit topologies, including the passive unbuffered mixer circuit of the EP-3. However, we tuned it to have a lower output impedance than the EP-3 to not load down the output as much while still retaining the open non-buffered output interface. A buffer does just what the name implies - it isolates one circuit from the next and can create a "disconnected" feeling that is subtle but a player who relies on touch-sensitive dynamics in his rig will appreciate the difference of not having the buffer. Having said that, the Belle Epoch will perform great in almost any pedal stacking situation. But for the most authentic Echoplex-like experience, we recommend that you run it before any foundation overdrive type pedals and after fuzzes, treble boosters, and the like. For the most awesome experience, try playing it right in line before your cranked up tube amp.Features: Based on the epic EP-3 tape echo. 80-ms-800ms of real-time adjustable delay. Go from a single repeat to self-oscillations. Dial in a variety of wow/flutter tape modulation. 100% wet/dry mix & record level control. Specifications: 2.34" x 4.39" pedal 9v-18v Negative Tip DC Power 61 mA draw
Here's a pretty simple but effective bass preamp from EWS. It's a 3-band EQ being pushed by a MOSFET gain stage. Looks like EWS made a version for Xotic with the same name. Not a lot different between the two other than some value changes laid out in this schematic on FSB. I've laid it out for a 125B with top mounted jacks. It runs off an 18v supply so use your favorite charge pump if you want to include that in the pedal.
