Taken 125 years ago, August 1895, the boys of Portslade Village have their picture taken before heading out on another school Summer holiday adventure. They have the wonderful South Downs, and the seaside at Brighton to explore. If they are keeping up the standards of their little group, they will no doubt return home with a few more holes, and rips in their clothes, cuts, bruises, and trouser pockets filled with various small animals. It is a century before GPS would be available, so however lost they get, they are relying on the dog getting them home in time for tea. Portslade Village (a mile inland to the north of the city of Brighton), nestles in a valley of the South Downs and still retains its rural character with flint buildings, a village green and the small parish church of St Nicolas, which is the second-oldest church in the city, dating from approximately 1150. The most notable building in the village is Portslade Manor, one of the few surviving ruins of a Norman manor. It was built in the 12th century and is now a Scheduled Ancient Monument. Another attrcation is Foredown Tower, which is a converted Edwardian water tower, and houses a camera obscura, one of only two in the south of England. It is open to the public This is my colourised version of a cropped section taken from the glass plate negative made in 1895

Fryco "Aerated Waters & Beverages" Enamel Advertising Sign, Circa 1910 An antique enamel advertising sign by Beverages company R Fry & Co. Ltd, made from steel, with original, vibrant Royal blue enamel paint. For a short while Fry & Co. Ltd produced their mineral waters at Preston Circus inside the incredible building complete with dome and clock faces that had once housed the Amber Ale Brewery. In the 1920's, it was decided to close the Brighton premises and move the firm to Victoria Road, Portslade where Fryco remained until its takeover by Schweppes in 1961. Much like other enamel signs of this era, this piece has patches of rust and enamel loss (as seen in photos) commensurate with age. The sign is in a great overall condition, structurally sound with a lovely natural patina. A colourful and eye catching piece for any interior commercial or residential, sure to be a conversation starter. The sign has a slight warp which is standard for this size of enamel sign. This doesn't effect the sign and wouldn't be present if screwed into place. Dimensions W: 91cm H: 36cm I can arrange delivery to most parts of the UK by a trusted courier service. Items are well protected prior to being shipped. Please message first for a delivery quote before buying.
