Generic products (not to be confused with store or house brand named products, although they are identical in quality) were a fad of the early 1980s. With stark packaging, listing little more than the product name, ingredients, nutritional information, manufacturer and UPC bar code. The idea behind them was by eliminating the cost for logos, descriptive copy, and photos/illustrations on the packaging, the savings could be passed on to consumers. Even though much of these were stock images anyway and in reality bore little extra cost in the actual manufacturing process. It's been said generic products were factory seconds and had little to no taste or nutritional value. That was pretty much false as generic products were often manufactured at the same processing plants as name brand items (even on the same lines!) and in any blindfolded test it was hard to tell the difference between say, a generic can of corn and a name brand one. And some even thought the generic packaged products tasted better. First appearing in 1981, they reached their peak in 1983 and 1984. However, as I mentioned, the savings from printing on the labels was very small overall and many retail chains began repackaging their generic products under house/store brand names. They completely disappeared by 1988 They were often in uniform aisles in the store, where every item was generic. They looked like this..... ....but felt like this. The rock group Public Image Ltd. famously spoofed the generic craze on their 1985 album, simply titled Album (for vinyl releases) Cassette (for cassette releases of Album) and Compact Disc (for CD releases of Album) See also The Return of Generic Products
The Queen Mother of ALL Ghetto Blasters, the Lasonic TRC-931 was a wall - literally. WITH all 10 "D" size batteries it required, it weighed a good 30 pounds. It had a dual cassette deck and not just any dual cassette deck. This thing was so badass, the Play deck was side-loading (like in a car stereo), just to make room for the massive 12" inch woofers. The radio had not one, but TWO telescopic antennas, AM/FM and two Shortwave bands. A full 5 band graphic equalizer, auxiliary inputs (earliest models included a PHONO input for your turntable!) stereo enhancement and pumped out a generous 50 watts per channel. And where where you most likely to buy one? Try WOOLWORTH! No photo does justice to this one - this one is, to this day the BIGGEST ghetto blaster ever made. It sported an AM/FM/Shortwave radio, which was a strange feature on many portable stereos in the '80s. No American teenager actively listened to shortwave radio back then - in spite of stations like the English transmissions of Radio Moscow (which broadcasted Western rock music that would get any Soviet teenager sent straight to the gulags if they were ever caught listening to it. With a healthy dose of anti-American propaganda in spite of the fact many of the Western rock acts they did play were AMERICAN.) Secondly, the low-fi, wildly fluctuating unevenness and irregularity of the shortwave radio signal made music listening on it an endurance test. My guess was the manufacturers were thinking of some phantom jet-set people who wanted to take a radio with them that could allow them to pick up The Voice Of America or the BBC World Service should they wind up in say, Nairobi. But the size of this ghetto blaster (the actual size of a suitcase), to say nothing of the weight (30 lbs. - with the 10 - yes, I said 10 - "D" cell batteries required to feed this thing off of the AC power grid) and weight (did I mention the $200 - about $400 in 2012 dollars) price tag?) guaranteed this radio was STAYING in America. It had a dual cassette (one deck was a player that you inserted a cassette into it like a car stereo) while the other was a typical ghetto blaster player/recorder for dubbing your Iron Maiden tapes (for your friends in Nairobi) both with auto-reverse, a 5 band graphic equalizer, a Loudness button (for extra punchy bass) through the 12" speakers and countless other buttons as well as a light show in itself just to make this work. Lasonic went ass over tea kettle (whatever that means) on this product. But even though Lasonic (who?) weren't a very well known electronics name like Sony, Panasonic or Aiwa, this radio became so influential on the TRUE ghetto blaster folks (early rap stars), that Lasonic reissued the TRC-931 in 2007, with iPod connections replacing the often faulty dual cassette system. I really think, why not just BUILD an MP3 player/recorder into it, using thumb/flash drives (the cassettes of today?) Portable stereos in the early '80s were HUGE things only for the most headstrong music fan when a simple Walkman won't do. I once knew a kid named Glenn who owned one of these General Electric babies. When he blasted his Judas Priest tapes out of this thing, every moose in Canada could hear it. The FM and AM reception was STUNNING. I ALWAYS wanted one.... But by the mid '80s, they started getting smaller...and smaller. I'm not sure if it was the lawyers were getting on them for the hernia problems these huge radio/tape decks were potentially causing for kids at school (I mean with 30 lbs. of boombox and cassette tapes on one arm and another 30 lbs. of Trapper Keeper and books on the other.). But the rockin' out sure took a hit. Then it really got colourful: The Sharp QT-50 Then these things started showing up. The Sharp QT-50 from 1985. A sort of retro-trip in pastel colours (pink, lavender, peach, seafoam green, banana yellow, powder puff blue and even beige) that even the girliest of girls and gayest of guys get nervous at today just looking at this thing. But 1985 was also the year of guys wearing pink polo shirts and Miami Vice. There were 8-track capable sets This was Montgomery Ward's 1983 offering. Montgomery Ward, Radio Shack and the RCA Music Service were the final outposts for the hardened 8-track tape lover in the '80s as Montgomery Ward still made players by the end of 1984, Radio Shack still sold blank 8-tracks, tape head cleaners and cases and the RCA Music Service still made and offered a slowly decreasing, selection of new 8-track tapes well into 1988. ...and those with TVs Some even had turntables (for warping and scratching your records while playing volleyball on the beach.) Sadly...by 1990, the portable stereo had become, seen-one, you seen 'em, all black things in weird shapes with CD players. They brought the colours back too more recently, but I still wish they made them like those BIG powerhouses from back in the day....
Rickie Tickie Stickies, in spite of their long association with hippies and flower power were actually a creation of ad man Don Kracke in 1967. These reusable plastic flower decals adorned many a Volkswagon and girls bedroom in the late 1960s/early '70s. By 1968, some 90 million had been sold. They were expanded to include other designs in the '70s and even moms started adding them to windows and cupboards.
Dumpsters may not be the canvases of pop culture we want right now but like 'em or not, they're the smelly, graffiti-encrusted billboards we deserve.

Cigarettes have always been gross and deadly. But these days, a cigarette smoker is pretty much considered as low as a crackhead in some circles. Though it's nice the smoking awareness campaigns have brought the graphic evils of tobacco to dinner hour TV screens, I have to admit, they're as pointless as the anti-marijuana PSAs of the '60s to the '90s. Besides, NOTHING can convince an innocent kid not to take up smoking more effectively than a kiss from a chain smoking aunt. In the old days, you used to have a dizzying variety of cigarette choices available at your local grocery/convenience store (more than 50!). Today, there's about 10 or even fewer brands in most places. Today, most brands are available exclusively over the internet. Retail stores get their stock from a state regulated middleman. Which is why in many states (namely Washington State), there is so little variety. But for remaining smokers, fire up a menthol and enjoy this stroll down the tobacco aisle of yesteryear.... Tareyton - My dad used to smoke these. No longer available in many areas, but they are available on the internet through RJ Reynolds. Kent - My mom used to smoke these. Virginia Slims - Another disappearing brand of women's cigarette. More - An icky tasting super long and thin "120" cigarette. I snagged a pack of these from the rack at Fred Meyer when I was a kid. They looked weird, so I though they'd taste cool (with that funky brown paper.) They were flat out GROSS. Satin - "With a LUXURIOUS satin tip", never mind the tobacco inside was garbage. Satin was an '80s upstart brand. I knew of these by the free pack coupons they used to stuff in every Sunday newspaper. Yves St. Laurant - A fashion designer's death by design. Another '80s brand. Merit - Another former brand of choice. Of all the low-tars, I actually LIKED Merits. They were tolerable. But Merit was one of those "old peoples" brands that seemed to disappear rapidly. Doral - A '70s brand. Multifilter - Known for having two different filters, but the same result. Vantage - A filter cigarette with a giant hole in the middle of the filter. Sterling - An 80's brand Benson & Hedges - Another disappearing brand and the first marketed for the "upscale" crowd. Eve - A long thin women's cigarette Viceroy - Never smoked this brand, but it was big in the '60s. Lucky Strike - Motto "It's toasted" Just like your lungs after smoking a pack. Chesterfield - A non-filtered smoke, popular from the '20s - the '60s when even by then, it was an "old people's cigarette" Before Kool and their jazz festivals in the '70s and '80s, it was popular with radio DJs (and immortalized as such in Donald Fagan's song "The Nightfly".) I never thought they were that spectacular Raleigh - This was the brand your old neighbour probably smoked. Dave's - A '90s brand still being made, Known for it's folksy magazine ads that made you think it was made by some average person, just like you, who wanted a better smoke than what those big corporations offered. Fact: It was made by Phillip-Morris the whole time. Scotch Buy - Now here was an unusual brand made by RJ Reynolds for a corporate supermarket chain (Safeway and subsidiaries.) Safeway discontinued Scotch Buy and distanced itself as far as possible from the brand in the '90s when cigarette manufacturers were being sued. Smart move. They tasted like crap anyway. Bel/Air - One of the better menthols. Now vanished. Carlton - The lowest tar and nicotine of any cigarette (without the nicotine, there's no point in smoking cigarettes.) Memorable for it's plain magazine ads that read. "If you smoke, please try Carlton" The gist was that it was a "safer" cigarette. But they tasted HORRIBLE and the filters were so tight, you can barely draw off of one. True - Another weird filtered low-tar cigarette. Misty - Another '80s women's cigarette. Still being made, but instead of women, it's gay men that buy them now. Lark - I remembered seeing these on the shelves, but I can't remember anyone who ever smoked this brand. Cheers! The missing piece here is probably STILL under somebody's couch or bed somewhere....... Perfection and Superfection were games made by Lakeside in the '70s Perfection was a game where you put the shaped game pieces into their matching slots on the game board before a one minute timer expires and the board ejects everything. If you can complete it, you can stop the timer. If you couldn't, you were left picking up game pieces everywhere for 10 minutes. Superfection had a two minute timer and puzzle piece blocks.. Somehow, I could never complete either of them before timer blew everything up.

AM Stereo was an invention designed to give AM radio stations the fidelity and depth of sound as FM. In the '80s, FM radio became the preferred band for music listening. It was high fidelity and in sparkling clean stereo while AM was monaural and lacked any real fidelity. As a result, most AM music stations began changing to news and talk programming or oldies from AM radio's '50s and '60s heyday before FM came of age. AM Stereo was a technology that was to level the playing field. And it would have worked. Had there been less confusion in the marketplace. Most of the AM Stereo systems sounded not just on par with FM, but in many cases, even BETTER. There was a depth and body to the sound of AM Stereo that very few FM stations could match. Even the standard monaural AM signals sounded better on an AM Stereo receiver. When AM Stereo was introduced, instead of settling on one system of transmission and reception, the FCC took the unheard of step of a "free market" approach. Meaning the listeners would decide which method worked the best. And there were 4 incompatible systems to choose from. Sony made radios that were capable of receiving all modes of AM Stereo transmission. In most cases, the listener didn't know which station was using what system. To add to this confusion, the AM stations themselves often never directly promoted the transmission system they were using. And AM Stereo didn't combat the worst problems of AM radio. The static problem and RF interference from CRT tube TV sets, home computers, lightning storms and car ignitions were still there. And stations on Class IV Local (Or "graveyard") frequencies (any station that broadcasts on 1230, 1240, 1340, 1400, 1450 and 1490 kHz on the AM radio dial.) Which cannot broadcast at more than 1,000 watts were still prone to the roaring background noise mush of thousands of other stations on the same frequencies if you weren't close enough to the station towers after sundown. Just tune any one of those frequencies at night and tell me what you hear.) A problem that still exists today. Over time, manufacturers and stations had been leaning in favour of the Motorola C-QUAM system. It wasn't until 1993 when the FCC officially settled on the Motorola C-QUAM system of AM Stereo. But by this time, public interest had largely faded outside of hardcore radio buffs. AM Stereo has been made standard in many stock car radios in the '90s to the 2000s. But most listeners tended to ignore it as most AM stations had dropped transmitting in stereo and carried talk programming. However, there are a few AM music stations that still broadcast in stereo. KEVA 1240 AM Evanston, Wyoming is a Classic Hits formatted station in southwest Wyoming. Still broadcasting in AM Stereo! This is an aircheck from JOLF 1242 AM in Tokyo. Note it's strange frequency; in Europe, Asia and Australia (in 1978) used 9kHz spacing between frequencies. In the Western Hemisphere, 10 kHz spacing is used (with all frequencies ending in 0.) Will it ever come back? Some people think (or at least hope) so. There's been a lot of talk recently about reviving the AM radio band (Step One: Stop running right wing talk, religion and sports.) There's also a system called HD Radio that many FM stations use, but has been a failure on AM because of interference problems for distant/nighttime listeners (it doesn't sound very good either.) And some HD Radios have built in AM Stereo circuitry. which defaults to AM Stereo if no HD signal is received. But it depends on the station. No Stereo signal means no stereo output. Even though it should be used as a back-up, very few HD equipped AM stations do.

I Don't Have a Choice
Radio stations are a unique breed. Some of them sign on the air and gain instant success, some never amount to much. Or until they are bought and transformed by another entity. And there are those that just simply fall by the wayside. Every major city has a few AM radio stations that were once popular 40-50 years ago that have gone through countless ownership/call letter/format changes and now languish as unknown ethnic, religious, Radio Disney, sports or fourth string talk formats. The intentions of the owners were good. A new and untried format. Or a stab at competing with the heritage local station with a different spin on their format. But somehow, fate had other plans. Let's look at a few of those who somehow just fell apart and their remains still stand....... WHOW 1520 AM Clinton, IL Probably the very best (and rare) example of a radio station that has gone to hell.....and BACK to tell about it. Note the ashtray on the console and dig that Radio Shack mixing board ....... Please note the station had signed off in 2002, about the time these pictures were taken. Note the lack of computer equipment in the WHOW on-air studio. Virtually ALL radio stations in 2002 - including most of the smallest, had fully digital computer controlled automation by that time.) Not WHOW. There is what appears to be an elderly computer mouse on top of that 1970's vintage automatic record changer you see in the first picture and it's quite possible all the computer equipment was taken out from it. But how many stations played their programming off cassette tapes in 2002? There a LOT of those you can see there, including cassette player - an ancient 1990s ghetto blaster! Most small stations like WHOW rarely, if ever played cassettes in 2002. It just wasn't a suitable quality medium for radio programming In fact, cassettes were rarely used in most commercial radio stations beyond recording news bites, occasional public service/religious programs (usually speech), and for DJs to record "airchecks" (a kind of live sampling of how they sound over the air to play for radio stations that hire them....or not., with all the music cut out and just the DJ's monologues and some commercials recorded.) Even THAT had gone to CD-Rs by the early 2000s in most parts of the country, as they were recorded onto hard disk and edited digitally by then. Today, WHOW is back with modern facilities and runs a News/Talk format with an emphasis on farming news. There's more.... It left the air in 2003 after it was sold to Clear Channel and a subsequent sale to another broadcaster who could not afford to keep the station on the air and the station's license expired in 2006. However the remains of the KOME station building in Tulsa remain. AM 1300 in Tulsa is now KAKC, an all sports station. WCHR 94.5 FM Trenton, NJ WCHR is a religious radio station in Trenton, NJ which currently broadcasts on 920 AM. WCHR originally broadcast on 94.5 FM. But left the FM dial in 1998 and after a number of call letter/format changes 94.5 is now WPST an Adult Contemporary radio station. This is the former WCHR station building.
