Ven Pongal is a very easy and comfort food in south indian cuisine... Usually I make it this when I am lazy to make breakfast recipes. I make with sambar, chutney, vadai, will be the great sidedish for Pongal.. Even Tiffin sambar will be great accompaniment.... Preparing pongal is easy job for me in my kitchen.. But I can browse this recipe from one of the blog and tried this... result was so amazing and loved by every one in my family... The Main thing of this pongal is to be dry or more watery... This is a hotel style pongal especially Saravana bhavan hotel pongal... My uncle like this very much, he often ask me to prepare this type of pongal, But I have already posted Ven pongal and Pongal sambar in my own recipe already in my blog You can visit it also..... Preparation time : 10 mins Cooking time : 20 mins Serve - 4 Recipe cuisine : Indian Recipe category : Breakfast INGREDIENTS : Raw rice = 1 cup Moong dal / Pasi paruppu - 1/4 cup Water - 4 cups Salt - as needed TO TEMPER : Ghee - 3 tbspn Mustard - 1 tspn Urad dal - 1 tspn Pepper - 2 tspn Ginger - 1 tbspn (finely chopped) Cumin seeds - 1 tspn Curry leaves - few METHOD : Take dal and rice combained in a bowl.. Wash well and add it to the cooker and add in water, salt.. Pressure cook for 3 whistle and set aside.. Now heat a pan add tempered items given in the list " TO TEMPER" one by one.. Toss it till light brown and pour to the prepared pongal.. Give it a mix (mash) and noted it should mix evenly.. Now it's done.. Serve hot... PICTORIAL : Take rice and dal Combain them in a bowl Wash them well an drain it Add it to the cooker Add in water Some salt Now it's done, keep aside Take tempering items In a pan add ghee Add in mustard and urad dal, allow to spltture Add in cumin seeds Some pepper Chopped ginger Now toss it lightly Add in cashew, fry till golden Pour it to the prepared pongal Mash it with ladle Now it's done Serve hot Enjoy..

Ingredients Ven Pongal / Pongal is a staple South Indian breakfast with rice and lentils. Rice and yellow moong dal are pressure cooked in milk and water until they are mushy. Then the rice is topped with ginger, green chilli, pepper tempering and smothered generously with ghee. Served with coconut chutney and sambar. Pongal is delicious and filling breakfast that keeps you filled and satisfied for hours. To Pressure cook Rice 1 Cup Rice 1/4 Cup Yellow Moong dal 1/4 Teaspoon Salt 3 Cups of water 1 Cup of milk For the tempering 1 Tablespoon vegetable oil 1 Tablespoon Ghee 1/2 Teaspoon whole black peppercorns 6 cashew nuts chopped roughly 1/2 Teaspoon Fresh Ginger chopped fienly 1/2 Teaspoon Cumin Seeds 1 Green Chilli chopped finely 1 Sprig of curry leaves a big pinch of Hing / Asafoetida Directions 1. Wash rice and dal together for 3 times and soak in regular tap water for 15 minutes 2. Add rice , dal , salt ,water and milk in a pressure cooker and pressure cook for 6 whistles on low flame 3. Once the pressure drops, open the lid of the pressure cooker and gently mash the rice with a back of a ladle 4. In a tadka pan / wok , heat oil and ghee 5. When the oil is hot, reduce the flame to low and add cumin seeds, whole black peppercorns and wait for them to splutter 6. Then add curry leaves, cashew nuts and fry until they are golden 7. Add ginger and green chillies and fry for 30 seconds 8. Finally add a big pinch of hing and give it a nice stir. Switch off the flame and add this tempering to the cooked rice and mix nicely 9. Serve hot immediately with coconut chutney and sambar
