Three years after the referendum, and hovering on the brink of a no-deal Brexit, international journalists share their thoughts
'A perfect mirror to its subject... should be compulsory reading' Observer Vladimir Putin is a pariah to the West. He has the power to reduce the West to nuclear ashes. He invades his neighbours, meddles in western elections and orders assassinations. His regime is autocratic and corrupt. Yet many Russians continue to support him. Under Putin's leadership, Russia has once again become a force to be reckoned with. Philip Short's magisterial biography explores in unprecedented depth the personality of Russia's leader and demolishes many of our preconceptions about Putin's Russia. To explain is not to justify. Putin's regime is dark. But on closer examination, much of what we think we know about him turns out to rest on half-truths. This book is as close as we will come to understanding Russia's ruler. 'Short's pushback against lazy, convenient myth-making is refreshing' The Times 'Elegantly written and pacy' Financial Times 'Extensively covers the dark moments of Putin's career.... The Putin of Short's book is not someone you would invite to dinner' New York Times

Iannucci's BBC TV series The Thick of It hit the small screen in 2005 and quickly established itself as the must-see political black comedy of the time. His ability to make the most ludicrous situations seem perfectly plausible in modern politics was uncanny. Apparently, prior to rehearsals the scripts would be sent to the shows 'swearing consultant', Ian Martin. He, and the cast's improvisation, lead to some of the most memorable phrases in British comedy! In the Loop span off from the series in 2009 and Peter Capaldi reprised the role of Malcolm Tucker, the UK Prime Minister's Machiavellian Director of Communication. This wonderful single-sided movie poster is designed in the style of Shepard Fairey's famous HOPE poster for Barack Obama's 2008 election campaign! It is in wonderful condition and has never been folded. It will look fantastic framed and on the wall of any fan of British politics (or proud Scotsman)! Otto von Bismarck (1815-98) has gone down in history as the Iron Chancellor, a reactionary and militarist whose 1871 unification of Germany set Europe down the path of disaster to World War I. But as Volker Ullrich shows in this new edition of his accessible biography, the real Bismarck was far more complicated than the stereotype. A leading historian of nineteenth- and twentieth-century history, Ullrich demonstrates that the "Founder of the Reich" was in fact an opponent of liberal German nationalism. After the wars of 1866 and 1870, Bismarck spent the rest of his career working to preserve peace in Europe and protect the empire he had created. Despite his reputation as an enemy of socialism, he introduced comprehensive health and unemployment insurance for German workers. Far from being a "man of iron and blood," Bismarck was in fact a complex statesman who was concerned with maintaining stability and harmony far beyond Germany's newly unified borders. Comprehensive and balanced, Bismarck shows us the post-reunification value of looking anew at this monumental figure's role in European history
If only it were all so simple! If only there were evil people somewhere insidiously committing evil deeds, and it were necessary only to separate them from the rest of us and destroy them. But the line dividing good and evil cuts through the heart of every human being. And who is willing to destroy a piece of his own heart?
