“Yves Saint Laurent ed io scoprimmo Marrakech nel 1966 e non ce ne siamo mai andati”. Con queste parole Pierre Bergé, cofondatore del marchio YSL, rimarcava il legame indissolubile tra la città di Marrakech e uno dei più grandi maestri d’alta moda del XX secolo. Yves Saint Laurent era profondamente innamorato del Marocco, dei suoi paesaggi, della sua gente. Qui trascorreva gran parte dell’anno e qui disegnò molte collezioni, scoprendo in questi luoghi la fascinazione del colore e delle trame geometriche di ispirazione berbera che riportò nelle sue composizioni, fino dai primi anni della sua carriera. Non è un caso che l’edificio, situato in Rue Yves Saint Laurent, sia adiacente al Jardin Majorelle, un giardino botanico di specie rare istituito nel 1930 che Pierre Bergé e Yves Saint Laurent acquisirono nel 1980 per salvarlo dalla demolizione e valorizzarlo, e dove alla sua morte furono disperse le ceneri dello stilista. Il museo mYSLm ospita una consistente selezione della collezione proveniente dalla Fondazione Pierre Bergé - Yves Saint Laurent di Parigi che comprende 5.000 capi di abbigliamento, 15.000 accessori haute couture, migliaia di bozze, schizzi, appunti oggi conservati negli archivi della casa di moda. L’inaugurazione di mYSLm è stata contestuale all’apertura del museo parigino nella sede storica della Maison, in avenue Marceau. In questo caso, il termine “museo” risulta riduttivo: in effetti, si tratta molto più che di un museo, con i suoi oltre 400 m2 di spazi espositivi permanenti, 159 m2 di spazi espositivi temporanei, un auditorium da 130 posti, un bookshop, un ristorante - caffetteria con terrazza, una boutique e una biblioteca con oltre 5.000 libri che spaziano dalla botanica, alla cultura berbera, alla storia arabo-andalusa, al mondo della moda. Nel lungo lavoro di ricerca presso gli archivi della Maison a Parigi, prodromico all’ideazione progettuale, gli architetti dello Studio KO furono intrigati dalla versatilità e dalla fluidità con cui Yves Saint Laurent sapeva elaborare un dualismo equilibrato tra forme curve e rettilinee, tra tagli morbidi e diritti. E proprio questo dualismo è la cifra compositiva che governa il progetto: mentre l’esterno è connotato da un aspetto massivo, rigoroso e introverso, come quello di una fortezza nel deserto, l’interno si configura come completamente differente, come la fodera di una giacca di sartoria: morbida e avvolgente. L’impianto plani-volumetrico risulta estremamente semplice e razionale. Le diverse funzioni sono ospitate ciascuna in volumi distinti, così che l’edificio si pone nell’insieme come un assemblaggio scultoreo di “blocchi” chiaramente percepibili nell’articolazione esterna. La composizione planimetrica si concentra attorno a un patio centrale, un vuoto circolare che funge da “pozzo di luce” da cui traggono illuminazione i locali interni, dal momento che i fronti esterni sono privi di aperture a protezione dall’intenso sole marocchino. Per ragioni climatiche, l’orientamento dell’edificio prevede che i locali espositivi siano disposti a nord e i locali di conservazione e archivio nell’interrato. Particolare attenzione poi è rivolta al sistema impiantistico impiegato per la conservazione degli oggetti ospitati nel museo, studiato ad hoc - che si tratti sia di un abito sia di un libro d’epoca - che garantisce un controllo costante della temperatura e dell’umidità in relazione alle diverse esigenze dei locali.
