Three Ilur have been to Ile of Sein, at the extreme West of France, one of the worst place to go with tremendous tides and the worst sea conditions. However, do not consider this as an invitation to go there! The length was increased by 20 cm only, but Ilur is mostly wider and higher, with a generous freeboard. This makes a very different boat, with good seakeeping ability, but still in the “sail and oar” spirit. Its superior quality makes Ilur my best-seller plan (with nearly one thousand copies sold). It has been built in many places, from the very heart of Alps, to Pacific islands! If you have to choose the best boat for your intended use, just notice than Ilur is not as an easygoing rowing boat compared to others of my sail and oar designs. She is mainly intended for sailing, oars being used when the wind is falling or to reach some narrow inlets. However, the clinker version is lighter and rows well. The dagger-board was initially preferred in order to give room for the crew. It is now replaced by a pivoting centreboard and a low centreboard case which is not at all cumbersome. Many other improvements are continuously brought. As an example oars may be stowed under the floorboard, leaving a free cockpit when sailing. Ilur was designed at first with the simple lug sail in the Breton style (said “misainier” rig). A lug sloop rig is now proposed and is a valuable option. A balanced lug rig (lug sail with boom) is an other option, interesting for river or single-handed sailing. More recently, I have added a very attractive lug yawl rig. Construction is either strip planked or plywood clinker. In both cases, laminated or steam bent frames give a very traditional and beautiful looking. Most dinghies have no areas long enough for an adult to stretch out full length for sleeping but the ARGIE 15 has 1,9m of clear length, sufficient for most people. The addition of removable slatted floorboards to your boat will lift you out of any water lying in the bottom while sleeping. A canvas or plastic sheet over the boom and tied to eyes along the gunwhales will give protection from the elements. The result is a minimum cruiser for use on protected waters. She has also been designed to make maximum use of the advantages of plywood to give a light and easily managed boat which is well within the capabilities of the average DIY enthusiast. The construction method used is stitch and glue which eliminates most of the framing normally used in boat construction and results in very light structural weight. The weight of a completed hull is approximately 60kg, making her suitable for car topping on extended roof racks. She will, however be more easily handled with a trailer. By normal dinghy standards, the mast is robust and fairly heavy. This is because the sailing rig has been designed to be uncomplicated to set up and easy to control, using a minimum of fittings. The mast tube comes from one extrusion, cut in half so as to fit inside the hull for storage. The whole concept of the ARGIE 15 is simplicity, both in construction and use. For those wanting to customise their boats to suit their own use, there are numerous possibilities. These include floor boards, customised tent, foot straps and extending the side seats right round the hull (these are not covered in the drawings). As drawn, she is about as much boat as can come from six sheets of plywood. The extension of the side seats will need an additional sheet and will limit the sleeping width a bit. Description This design resulted from an idea to create the most compact coastal cruiser for two people. At the same time, I would like the boat to have the classic appearance of the folkboat era. Thus came the Picofolkboat 360, which means "a very small boat for people". The first boat built exceeded all expectations: it was seaworthy, comfortable, easy to operate and fast. All parts of the hull are cut from 12 sheets of plywood (8x4'). The hull is built by the "sew and glue" method of, so this boat can easily be built by a non-professional shipbuilder. The boat has a large locker in the forepeak, where you can put all the camping stuff and stern section for mooring ropes, fenders and anchor. The cabin has 2 spacious berths 6' 4" long. Under the floorboards of the cabin is a removable ballast - sandbags. Аmong all my boat projects, this is my favorite, because I like the feel of a light little boat. On the other hand, it is seaworthy and roomy for safe and comfortable travel. I travel on it every summer on the Gulf of Finland. I once traveled 120 miles along the coast in this boat. There were two of us and a dog. We lived in the boat for almost a week, cooking in the cockpit on a small gas stove. When it rained, the waterproof cabin was always warm and dry. The inside layout is the same as for the ECO55 sail version but the underwater shape is changed. The cockpit is wider and has a size of 1,45m x 2 m. With the bigger size normal deck chairs can be used. With a cockpit cover two more can sleep on the boat. Accommodation is simple but practical. Because of the easily driven hulls the boat will travel at about 12 knots with the a 15 HP outboard engine. But practice showed that a single outboard of 20 HP is more feasible - less noise and lower operating costs. The boat has a double bunk, but the cockpit is big enough to sleep 2 more persons. The construction and list of materials is similar to the ECO55 sail version. The difference is that you need no rig, rudders or dagger board. With the low weight of about 325 kg including engines the boat can be towed behind a relative small car. Construction is as always the plywood/glass/Epoxy construction system.
