The forth and for now last survivor for Zombicide: Black Plague (Z:BP) I painted recently is Lady Faye: As well as the other figures I've painted for Z:BP so far Lady Faye was part of last year's extremely successful Kickstarter campaign by Cmon (Cool Mini or not). The giving backers unlocked her at total funds of ridiculous $2,650,000 and thus it came as part of the exclusive miniatures for all those subscribers. Do you recognise the character she's based on? Somehow I didn't like Snow White and the Huntsman too much but Kirsten Steward's 30mm incarnation is one of my favourite survivors from Z:BP. The figure's pose and character are simply perfect and detail Cmon brought into it is really extraordinary for a plastic board game piece. In the game Snow White is a nimble character starting with an extra free movement action. So at the beginning of the game she is performing quite like Nelly the baremaid. Thus made her to our daughter Viktoria's second favourite character. Hopefully my paintjob made her top choice but lately we didn't find the time to play Black Plague with her again. Although the base isn't finished yet because I haven't varnished Lady Faye yet here's a view from above: Once again I added cobblestone pieces made of greenstuff and honestly on her base they came out best in my humble opinion. As soon as one or two coats of varnish are protecting this armoured beauty I'll add some static grass and maybe some clump foliage. After that she should be ready to declaim against sinister zombies.
In hindsight my last entry was pretty lame. The pictures were taken on my mobile phone and the entry itself was arranged on that tiny device as well. Seen on a usual screen the pictures and overall appearance of the post was far from optimal. Hence I understand why the commentaries were as scattered as restrained. Anyway I got cracking a bit to present you something better quickly: Brother James with his character card As you see it's Brother James from the Zombicide: Black Plague Kickstarter from 2015. Luckily I got hold of a whole 'Knight's Pledge' for a very reasonable price. Actually not more than I would have paid for the core game, the Wulfsburg expansion and a couple of other boxes I might have purchased. As you know I decided to start with four of the Kickstarter exclusive characters and firstly finished James. You might spot the resemblance to Brother William of Baskerville from 'The Name of the Rose': Although I haven't seen the film for a couple of years I've been keeping it in good memory. Especially Sean Connery stayed within my recollection as well as the atmosphere of the abbey which is depicted perfectly. In the highly unlikely case that you don't know the film look for it. It's worth watching without any doubt! However during their Black Plague Kickstarter Cmon (Cool Mini or not) creates a couple of exclusive figures based on characters from film or TV. Somehow James found his way onto my painting table as part of the first batch of four. As usual I used Vallejo Model Colors to get this chap painted; this time above a black undercoat. As you see I kept the figure as close to the character card as possible and I'm really satisfied with the result. Honestly it became one of those 'limit of my skill' miniatures and it shows how my humble skills developed during the last years. Only the base isn't completely finished since I took the pictures before applying varnish to the miniature. Unfortunately the original base of the figures was simply plain. So I pondered what to do and employed some Greenstuff to imitate a couple of cobblestones. It shall look as James standing on a kind of damaged or vanishing cobbles. After varnishing this fellow I'll apply some static grass and clump foliage to round the base out. What do you think? Yours truly hopes you're quite as satisfied and tolerant as he appears...

Let's proceed with the parade of survivors. After Brother James and Lucas here comes the third figure for Zombicide: Black Plague I painted recently: Xuxa She was part of the Black Plague Kickstarter which took place last year and the generous backers unlocked her after collecting as much as $1,300,000. As most of the other Kickstarter exclusive survivors she's inspired by a well-known TV character: Although I never followed the Xena TV series I recognised her at once as inspiration for the figure. Somehow the series about this warrior princess was an essential part of the TV culture in the late nineties and there was no way to ignore it completely. Unfortunately those pseudo-greek-mythic stories never caught me... Anyway here 30mm incarnation is a nice piece of craftsmanship. As usual Cmon depicted her character very well and recreated her costume almost perfectly. Qualitatively the figure is simply as good as all the stuff I've seen from Cmon so far. A really well detailed piece made of that robust board game plastic. Gamewise Xuxa is a very tough survivor. She starts with a bonus on strength and is very soon able to fight those tough monsters which are usually unbeatable in close combat for other survivors. Of course that makes her a good choice for any game but maybe it turns the balance too far to the easy corner. We'll see... Usually I take the pictures of my painted figures before varnishing them. Therefore I'll have to ass some static grass or foliage to the base later.

Old Testament Bible Study: Moses and the 10 Plagues in Egypt, edible and fun!
I just found the most interesting story about four grave robbers who miraculously survived the Bubonic plague despite close contact with the victims. It intrigues me because it feeds into my hypochondria and general interest in horrible diseases of all sorts -- any story about airborne pathogens thrills me: "As the bubonic plague decimated Europe in the year 1413, four thieves were captured and charged with robbing the dead and dying victims. When the thieves were tried, the magistrate offered leniency if they would reveal how they resisted contracting the infection as they performed their gruesome acts. They explained that they were perfumers and spice traders and told of a special concoction of aromatic herbs, including cloves and rosemary, that they rubbed on their hands, ears, and temples." I also love that there is an aromatherapist out there who actually named her product "Thieves" and sells it online. It's kind of charming, and I'm so ready to give it a try because I've become obsessed with de-bugging my apartment while also making it smell nice (because bug spray smells awful, obviously, and commercial air fresheners only make it worse by creating some sort of scented fug). This sounds like the closest I can get to complete cleanliness without creating some sort of clean-room/antechamber, and forcing everyone within to wear scrubs and those little footie slippers. And, frankly, who hasn't had images of the bubonic plague dancing in their head while riding the NYC subway in winter ... ???
We continue with Moses and start the 10 plagues! The 10 plagues lesson was my daughter's favorite lesson she remembers me teaching as she was growing up! Some of the visuals I have used for years! I don't mind putting money into visuals, since they last for so long and they really make a huge impact for the kids! There is a small one-page booklet for the take-home. There are extra worksheets to review the plagues also. Review: God talked to Moses from a burning bush and God told Moses that he would be the person to talk to Pharaoh about letting the Israelites leave Egypt. Moses didn't think he could do the job. But God told Moses to throw his rod on the ground and it became a snake. Moses picked it up by the tail, and it turned back into his rod! Then, Moses put his hand in his bosom, and it came out leprous! God told Moses that if Pharaoh didn't believe the first 2 signs, then Moses was to pour water from the river onto the dry ground and it would turn into blood. God told Moses that Pharaoh would refuse to believe at first, but with God's power, Pharaoh WOULD believe. Since Moses was not sure he could not talk very well, God said He would send Aaron with Moses to do the talking. They were to tell Pharaoh that "I Am" sent them. God said, ' I AM WHO I AM'. Lesson in Exodus 5-9: And Moses was eighty years old and Aaron eighty-three years old when they spoke to Pharaoh. Moses and Aaron went to see Pharaoh just like God told them to. They told Pharaoh to let the people go, and Pharaoh replied, "I do not know the Lord, and I will not let the people go!" Pharaoh asked why they took the people away from their work and the people needed to go back to work! Pharaoh had to decide a punishment because Moses and Aaron asked to let the people go. He decided to make the people find their own straw to make the bricks, instead of the taskmasters giving it to them... but, the people still had to make the same number of bricks each day! That was really impossible, and the people are upset with Moses because Moses made Pharaoh angry at them! I used my stick and this snake here Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh again and when Pharaoh said to show him a miracle, Aaron threw down his rod (walking stick) and it turned into a serpent! Pharaoh called in his magicians, and they turned their rods into snakes, too, except Aaron’s snake ate all their snakes! (I gave the students snakes here) God told Moses "I am the Lord. With a strong hand, Pharaoh will let the people go." God sends the 10 plagues to show Pharaoh the His power! They are: 1. (Exodus 7:17) God told Moses to stand beside Pharaoh in the morning when he goes to the river. Moses and Aaron did just as God said. Moses told Pharaoh that God wanted the people to be permitted to leave. Pharaoh said no. Aaron held out his staff, hit the water and water everywhere turned to blood. All the fish died, the water stank, and the water was blood all through Egypt. I use a clear bowl with red food coloring drops already in the bottom with the plastic fish covering the red drops. I pour the water in the bowl, and it turns red and the fish float to the top. They love it, even though they figure out it happened, but God can do it, even though I can't! (I handed out bottles of water & plastic fish here) My frog visual! After 7 Days: 2. (Exodus 8:6) Moses told Pharaoh to "Let the people go." If you don't, there will be frogs everywhere. Pharaoh said no, and So Aaron stretched out his hand over the waters of Egypt, and the frogs came up and covered the land of Egypt. Pharaoh's magicians were also able to make frogs come out of the water. (I gave them frogs here) Pharaoh said have your God take them away and I will let the people go. All the frogs died except for the ones by the river. They gathered them all together and made piles of them and it stank! So, the problem was taken care of, and Pharaoh changed his mind. 3. (Exodus 8:17) Moses said to Aaron ‘Stretch out your rod, and strike the dust of the land, so that it may become lice throughout all the land of Egypt.’” The magicians tried to make lice, but they couldn't, and they told Pharaoh that 'God's fingers' made the lice. Pharaoh hardened his heart and wouldn't let the people go. (I gave the students rice here) 4. (Exodus 8:24) Moses told Pharaoh to let the people go, or there would be swarms of flies. Pharaoh said no, and there were flies everywhere! Pharaoh told Moses that he would let the people go if the flies disappeared, but when the flies were gone, Pharaoh changed his mind and wouldn't let the people go. (I gave them flies here) 5. (Exodus 9:6) Moses told Pharaoh that if he didn't let the people go, all the Egyptian livestock would die, but all the Hebrew livestock would live. The next morning, all the Egyptian livestock got a disease and died. Pharaoh checked the Hebrew animals, and they were all still alive. But, he still refused to let the people go. (I gave them an animal here) The livestock in the display were standing, and we knocked them over The livestock included cattle, horses, donkeys, camels, oxen and sheep. This is the beginning of the plagues that God sent. We will continue the 10 plagues next week! Next to each plague above, you will see the item that I gave to them highlighted in yellow. They will start the artist palette project and leave it in class for the 3 weeks. Also, they will leave the bag of 10 plagues goodies so we can review each week. I made a copy of the 10 plagues song for them to take home and asked their parents to sing it with them. Each week for the 10 Plagues, I will have a new take-home project for the kids. For this week, I purchased these small artist palettes, and the kids will add the plagues this week, and the next 2 weeks as we discuss them. I found these at hobby Lobby after wandering the store looking for something with 10 spaces and used my 40% off. But, if you do not want to purchase them, you can use the same printable and you can use on a paper plate, or by itself. I also put the pieces through my sticker maker, but if you are using the artist palettes, you could use the glue dots to attach everything.
