Here are a couple of patterns for the lady of the house. A cozy bed jacket and a pair of silk panties. The bed jacket can be made without cutting a paper pattern but it might be easier for the less experienced seamstress to make a paper pattern first. One suggestion for this bed jacket was wool challis but I think a lightweight polar fleece would work too and would be so soft and cuddly on a cold winter morning. You can trim the edges with a buttonhole stitch as indicated below but trimming in a soft cotton lace would be pretty too. Bed Jacket From the book: "Whether or not you eat breakfast in bed, like the lady in the sketch, a warm wool bed jacket is a comfortable thing to own. The one shown here may be cut without a pattern. You will need 1-1/2 yards of 36" material or 1 yard of 54" goods." Directions: "All the dimensions for cutting are given in the diagram [see below]. Fold the material the long way through the center as at A. Slash the center front opening. Round the back of the neck slightly, also the lower corners of the front opening. Measure down from the fold along the ends of the material 9" to mark the width of the sleeves. Measure in 15" from the lower corners to mark the length of the sleeves. Cut the underarm seams as shown here. When the seams have been stitched, roll the edges and buttonhole them with contrasting pearl cotton or rope silk embroider thread as at C." Finish with a pretty ribbon tie as illustrated. The following panties pattern is a little more complicated. You might want to draft a paper pattern and sew it in cotton muslin first before using your lovely silk. These panties are more like tap pants and would be comfy paired with a dainty camisole. Previous sewing experience will be necessary to create the following garment. Panties From 3/4 Yard of Silk The instructions read: "You can make your own pattern for the pair of panties shown here and, if you are size 36 or smaller, you can cut them from 3/4 yard of silk. A little more material will be needed for larger sizes." "How to Cut -- Dimensions for making the front of the pattern for size 36 are given in Diagram A [see below]. The back in the diagram at B [pattern below]. For every size larger, make the paper 1" wider and 2" deeper. For every size smaller, make the paper 1/2" narrower and 1" shorter. Measure in from the corners of the paper the distances indicated here and make dots; then draw straight lines from dot to dot. When you have made your pattern cut two front pieces and two back pieces." "How to Make -- The side seams and the top of the front sections are cut on the straight of the goods. French seams are used. 1) Sew the center front seam. 2) Sew the center back. 3) Face the lower edge of the sections. 4) Sew the side seams leaving the top of each open. Finish these openings by rolling and whipping the edges. 5) Sew the crotch seam. 6) Sew the darts in the back. 7) Face the top with a straight facing. 8) Sew on buttons. 9) Make loops for fastening." How luxurious to have custom made silk panties! The panties paired with a pretty camisole would be so cozy to sleep in. Then, in the morning you can slip on your handcrafted bed jacket made out of warm wool or soft polar fleece. Who's going to want to get out of bed then?

Patterns aren't cheap. Seriously, I was browsing through through the look books at Hobby Lobby the other day and some of them were as much as $20. Tack that on to the price of fabric and other supplies and suddenly sewing your own clothing becomes very expensive. Thankfully, you can make your own patterns using your own clothing that you know to fit well. I'll show you how to make a simple blouse pattern using a top of my own. I used Scotch Postal Wrapping Paper as my pattern paper. I found it at Target for about $5. It gives you 30 feet of paper, so it will last a long time. I used paper because I like to lay my pattern piece down and trace the shape directly onto my fabric. If you think you'd prefer to pin the pattern to your fabric and then cut it out, paper may not be the way to go for you. Muslin fabric is another great material that would allow you to pin the pattern piece to your fabric. It's also nice because it can be folded up and stored away when not in use. Lay your garment down on the paper and determine the middle of the top. Mark right above the collar and right below the hem. Draw a rough outline of one half of the top. When you get to the sleeve, do your best to fold it back so that you just see the armhole. Sketch the curve as shown below. This first pattern piece I'm working on will serve as the back of the pattern. Sketch the outline of the slightly higher, back collar. Stop once you get to the half marks that you previously made. Now you'll need to sketch an outline outside the dotted line to allow for seam allowances. To determine how far apart the rough sketch line should be from the final outline of the pattern you'll need to take what materials you're working with into consideration. For example: The lace top I am using has a stretch quality to it. If I want to use this pattern to make a top with a non-stretch fabric, I will need to make the final pattern outline a good amount wider than my rough sketch. However, if I was using a non-stretch garment to make my pattern I wouldn't have to allow for as much extra fabric. It's always better to have a too big pattern and therefore a too big top than it is to go too small. Don't be afraid to be generous. Extend the outline by about 1.5 inches along the sides and about 1 inch at the armholes and collar. Extend the bottom of the top by several inches to allow for hemming. Cut on the line and fold the pattern over making sure that the crease is on the middle marks you made previously. Trace so that you have a perfectly symmetrical pattern. Repeat the same process for the front piece of the pattern being sure to trace the front part of the collar this time. Now for the sleeves. Fold a piece of paper and position it underneath the garment and the pattern. The fold should be parallel to the top of the sleeve. Trace the curve of the front pattern piece. Leave plenty of extra room for the sleeve to be hemmed. Remember it's better to go oversized than undersized. You can always take the shirt in if it is a little too big. Cut out all of your pieces and press to get rid of creases and you're done! *Update* I recently used this pattern to make this cute little top. Click on the picture for the full tutorial!

Stitching lace insertion to fabric is the first technique that we learn when I teach heirloom sewing by machine. This is not a strong application of lace and best used on collars, yokes, or sleeves. Lace insertion is the lace that is straight on both edges. If one side of the lace feels rougher than the other, this is the wrong side of the lace. I have used a contrasting color thread for the photos. Use a fine machine thread that matches the lace and a 60/8 size machine needle. Starch and press the lace and fabric. Using a wash-away marker, mark the lace placement lines on the fabric. Set the sewing machine on straight stitch length of 2.0 and stitch close to the edge of the lace down both sides. I prefer to stitch from top to bottom each time to prevent the fabric and lace from distorting. Turn the fabric to the wrong side, and carefully cut the fabric between the stitching lines, being careful not to cut the lace. Press the fabric away from the lace. On the right side of the fabric, using a zigzag stitch of 2.0 width and 0.7 length, stitch over the previous stitching line. The stitch should "zig" into the lace and "zag" into the fabric. On the wrong side of the fabric, using blunt scissors, trim away the excess fabric. Starch and press the fabric and lace before continuing with your garment. I first started doing heirloom sewing about 15 years ago while doing custom sewing for "Joy's of Smocking" in Decatur, AL. I still love working with lace and fabric!
