Susanne von Textile Geschichten sammelt heute Stoffspielereien zum Thema „seltene Techniken". Das Thema gibt viel Spielraum, bereits 2015 gab es dazu eine Linksammlung. Mein Beitrag zu diesem Thema kam zustande, ohne dass ich darüber nachgedacht habe. In den Osterferien durfte ich einen Upcycling-Workshop mit Kindern betreuen. Am Ende gab es reichlich Stoffreste. Zeitgleich hatte ich ein paar Nachfragen nach Chenille-Box-Mäppchen. So war es naheliegend, die Stoffreste zu stapeln und altbewährt zu Flächen für Stifte-Mappen zu vernähen: Beginnend auf einer Bügelmarkierung diagonal; parallel mit Nähfußabstand von 0,75 cm. Es hat sich bewährt, die untere Lage größer zu halten, dann ist das Anschneiden der Lagen leichter. Auf der untersten Lage drehe ich gleich mit ein paar Stichen, ist besser als Abschneiden. Versehentlich habe ich vereinzelt am Cutter eine Seite mit zu schmalem Führungselement erwischt und meine Schnitte sind mitunter sehr dicht an der Naht. Für einen Nahtabstand von 0,75 cm ist die Einstellung M am Chenille-Schneider zweckmäßig. Durch mein Missgeschick hatte ich das Bedürfnis, die Raupen zusätzlich zu fixieren und erinnerte mich an Fotos von Stoffmanipulationen. Dazu lasse ich nun Fotos sprechen (eine kleine Auswahl). Beim Stapeln der Lagen habe ich mir kaum Gedanken gemacht, wie sich dieser Zufall später auswirkt. Besonders umgehauen hat mit der Effekt mit einem lila-orangen 80er Jahre Bettwäschestoff und in einem anderen Stapel eine mint-rosa-karierte Lage, die unter der Titanic hoch kam. Auch schwarzer Denim ergab eine interessante Optik. Die Verwandlung der "Altstoffe" war faszinierend, ich konnte dann gar nicht aufhören mit Stoffe aufräumen. Wenn mein Chenille-Cutter noch scharf wäre würde ich wahrscheinlich auch jetzt gerade Chenille-Raupen schneiden, aber meiner Ersatzmesser ist noch nicht eingetroffen. Dem Fixieren der Chenille-Raupen vor dem Nähfuß habe ich zunächst mit einer Häkelnadel nachgeholfen, später mit einer Stricknadel: mit der Nadel von der Seite zwischen die Raupen gleiten, drehen und vor der Näh-Nadel positionieren. Die Fläche mit Umrandung habe ich später mit einem Dreifach-Zierstich zusätzlich über die Umbiege-Nähte gefestigt, die vielen Lagen brauchen Halt. Die monatliche Stoffspielerei ist eine Aktion für textile Experimente. Sie ist offen für alle, die mit Stoff und Fäden etwas Neues probieren möchten. Der Termin soll Ansporn sein, das monatlich vorgegebene Thema soll inspirieren. Jeden letzten Sonntag im Monat werden die Links mit den neuen Werken zwecks Erfahrungsaustausch gesammelt. Hola chic@s, ¿Qué os parece mi nuevo centro de mesa? La verdad es que es queda bonito, pero es una técnica que a mi parecer, requiere de muchísima paciencia ;-))) Si bien es cierto que es agradecida, porque vas viendo los resultados rápido, y que luego no le tienes que añadir trasera... es cuanto menos, laboriosa Y tengo que reconocer que me ha puesto un poquito de los nervios, no recordaba haberme pinchado tanto con una labor desde... qué sé yo... jajaja, para hacer las ventanitas se tienen que poner muchos alfileres, y cada uno hacia una dirección distinta, así que me pinchaba sí o sí... Hice este quilt para hacer una muestra, ya que en una clase querían hacerlo... así que aprovechando la ocasión, ya tengo nuevo centro de mesa. Dos pájaros de un tiro ;-))) Está todo hecho a máquina, y escogí este diseño para poder hacer 2 tipos de ventana diferente, la que parece una flor, y la que es como un rombo. Espero que os guste. A number of years ago, I saw a finished quilt that was a two sided beauty...it appeared to be done using a modified version of a Cathedral Windows block...unfortunately, I never did learn the maker of the quilt or what the technique was called.....but.....back then, I did set out to figure out how it had been created, I posted my experimental resulting blocks here Over the years, I have received many requests for a tutorial on this technique. So.....here is my attempt to show you what I did ....Warning! this is a long and photo laden post. Like most quilts, it starts with templates and or patterns.....In this post, I will walk you through the general steps to creating the separate blocks and for those who want to give it a go, you will find a link to a PDF containing printable templates here You will be cutting a variety of bits and pieces and circles to assemble into blocks....the more you make, the more variety you make, the more patterns you will be able to create with them when you stitch them all together. This is a "quilt as you go" type of project.....AND while there is some machine work, the bulk of it is done by hand. you will start by making a set of templates (thin cereal box cardboard works great for the "pressing" templates) If you want to try a few different looks, cut several 6" circles, 2" squares, 3.5" squares as well as some 2" x 3.5" pieces (I also include a pattern to create that "split"circle) in the photo above, you see the cut pieces ready to assemble (seam allowances are included in the pattern) and in the photo below....the machine piecing is done, the bits pressed flat The goal is to end up with a variety of 3.5" squares and 6" circles (pieced and solid) then we can begin the pressing, folding and stitching process take one of the circles, (wrong side facing) knot the thread and then do a running stitch just in from the edge, once you get all the way around and back to the knot you are ready for the next step Place the cardboard template (5.5" circle) from the needle end, gently tug on the thread to pull in the circle...evenly distributing the fullness It is time to go to the iron....press this well and remove the cardboard ...it should look like this now you want to press those rounded edges in toward the center to give you a place for your 3.5" square (remember, to make this cardboard pressing template 3.75" square as the pattern file shows you) Once again we head to the iron can you see where you are headed? remove the cardboard template and in this cavity, place a 3.5" square of thin batting (I actually used flannel instead, it is that solid white you are seeing under the 4 patch) so you have 3 layers happening...the folded circle, a piece of batt or flannel and a 3.5" square (solid or pieced) those "flaps" will be hand stitched in place. I chose to use small applique stitches, but you could just as easily use big Sashiko stitching or possibly a blanket stitch for an even more interesting look. here is another combination of circle - square layering (this time using a split circle) Every time you change the circle - square combination, you will have a "different" looking block....the combination of different blocks will create a large variety of larger patterns. below, is a close up look at my stitching, when you have made a number of blocks and determined a layout you want to make into a quilt, simply place the blocks right sides together and ladder or whip stitch just as one would with English Paper Pieced Hexagons so....that is the basics.....as you can see below, there is quite the variety you can make with just a few pattern pieces, let your imagination roam free and see what you can come up with. keep in mind that the whole thing is reversible too.....depending on which way you assemble the completed blocks you will have two different looking quilts, front and back. If you are like me, you need to get the fabric in your hands and manipulate it to fully understand the process......hopefully I have shown and explained it well enough to get you started. I would LOVE to see what you create! the nice weather is finally arriving, this would make a great project to have on hand for sitting and stitching out on the porch or perhaps for on those shop hop road trips :-)
This has been my favourite assignment so far and I'm pleased that I've finished it much quicker than the previous two. I think this is partly because I found it to be written in a more straightforward way and partly because I enjoyed the freedom of working experimentally. I liked just trying out techniques with no particular images in mind, then looking at the results to see what ideas it generated. I've found I've related the results to existing drawings and it's inspired ways to revive what's not gone so well. In the past I have struggled choosing the right source drawings for projects but the more techniques I try, the more I feel able to decide what is suitable. I also thoroughly enjoyed the research point exploring the diversity of textiles and became far more engrossed than I'd anticipated. My visit to the Huddersfield Centre of Textile Excellence was so enlightening and brought home the importance of understanding the structure of textiles. Learning about the possibilities of anti-counterfeiting and multiple laser surface enhancement technologies that will change the textile industry beyond recognition in the not too distant future was mind blowing. I'm finding my learning blog invaluable. I'm organising my thoughts as I write, forming opinions, coming up with ideas and I regularly refer back to older posts for information and inspiration. My theme book has caused me some issues. Sometimes I think I've made the wrong decision in choosing family history because of the lack of things I have in front of me to draw. However, having read ahead, I can see that the source for my final assignment piece doesn't necessarily have to come from my theme book if there's something else more suitable. I've also begun to think more laterally on the subject. For example, there's no reason why I can't look into an ancestors occupation. I've discovered one was a sail maker, so maybe I could investigate some of the knots used in sail making during Assignment 4 when I look at ropes, plaits and braids? Another was a book binder and ever since the Leeds Book Fair study visit I've become interested in learning more about book binding. I've made some small sketch books, created book covers and thought about ways to present work in a book format. I was intrigued that out of one page of A4 paper, there appears to be so much surface area. Rather than make a book with blank pages to draw on I decided to make an existing drawing into a book. I've also secured some funding from OCASA and arranged a series of three book related workshops for OCA students, so later this year we can learn paper making, print onto the paper we make and then bind it into a book. This afternoon I went to our local quilt shop -- the only one in town, at the moment, because the other one had to move out of the lovely building they were renting, as the owner sold it. And of course, the fabric I needed for the back of the pillow . . . . . is in a moving van somewhere, waiting to be unloaded at a new location, if or when ('when', I hope) a new location is found. I got some fabric that, while not perfect, didn't clash, at least. I found some trim at Wal-Mart, came home, and finished putting the pillow all together. Also pictured is the fabric I purchased at the quilt shop for a project I will soon start for a customer -- she wants an appliqué 'photo' of her little Sheltie dog.
3 dimensional quilt blocks are a lot of fun. They add a lot of dimension to the quilt and even though they might be a bit confusing to begin with, once you get the hang of it, they are super simple.

I am a huge fan of Iris folding; it looks so complex, but it is actually quite simple. I have used Iris Folding for birthday cards and Christmas Cards, to decorate a house and to gift to a friend. It is definitely a multipurpose kind-o-craft. If you would like to make this heart, you can find a template: HERE and for instructions on how to make your own Iris folding patterns from scratch go HERE. To give you a sense of my process (I made up this pattern above, just to try making my own) here's a little photo recap: The writing is fairly faint, but you can see the lines and numbers I sketched out. The first part of my project was to make a drawing of a heart and cut it out of cardstock. Then I had to impose a triangle shape over it and, using a ruler, decrease the size of the triangle by 3/4 inch increments. Once that is done, I label each segment with a number and keep track of which paper corresponds to each number (ex: striped paper = numbers 2, 5, 8, 11, 14, 20, 23, etc) to help me keep track of where each paper piece goes. Next, you flip the front of the cardstock (the side people will see) over so that is is facedown and you pattern cutout is in it's place in the middle. Using the paper that corresponds to each number, fold the paper and cover each segment, taping them lightly down on either end. Work in a clockwise motion around the pattern. You'll be so surprised once you flip it over. They always come out so fantastic!! You'll be getting lots of ooo's and ahhh's over this craft I promise. :-) Don't you just love the way the paper lays in the pattern. I think it's beautiful!!!
