Block #9 from the Patchwork Quilt Along hosted by the Fat Quarter Shop. A new, free quilt block pattern released every month.
This variation of the Pinwheel Star block uses flying geese, half square triangles and squares to create a center star with partial stars around it. While it has a lot of pieces, it's easier to sew together than the traditional block.

Here's a pattern in a quilt about 1960 that I can't find anywhere Equal nine patch in a nine patch. The corners have a spiky point. Here's the closest thing in BlockBase: #1765 from a little quilt magazine in the 1960s. There aren't a lot of nine patches with these shapes in the corners. About 1880 from Roberta Levin's collection Guiding Star set all over in EQ8 5x5 set But there probably should be more because the point makes interesting secondary patterns. The KC Star's Guiding Star has too many seams meeting in the center square for me. You could just make that center square one piece and it would work fine as an all over set. So going back to the unknown block at the top of the page. Drawn in EQ And set all over.... It would be easier to do as a star with a triple sashing. But it does make an interesting stars and stripes quilt.
Since my grandson is into video games with tanks and planes and battles, he’s got me thinking in terms of weapons and fire power, too. The Scrap Wars in my studio are going to be facing a new…

Monday and today I spent several hours at the hospital sitting with a family member and took some handwork. I just have to embroider some details onto these animals and I will have 4 more blocks done. I’m glad I had them prepared to take. It sure helped to pass the time. After watching the rebroadcast of a 10 year old show by Georgia Bonesteel this morning, I was inspired to work in EQ. I started with the carpenter’s square block and next decided to take off the last round of strips. I liked the new block better. Then I discovered that the center portion was very much like the chain block which is simple but interesting. It can also be used to create a pattern similar to one by Georgia Bonesteel called “Calico Crossover”. I wonder if that is how she got her design idea. The design will go on my list of quilts I will make one day. I enjoy the Celtic feel.
